West Elementary Receives the U.S. Department of
Education Blue Ribbon School Award

West Elementary School
was recently awarded
the U.S. Department of
Education Blue Ribbon
School Award. On November 3rd, Dr. Bouldin,
Mrs. Bouldin, Mrs. Hall,
Mrs. Carden, Mrs. Cupp,
and Mrs. Drake traveled
to the Omni Shoreham
Hotel in Washington,
D.C. to receive the
award for us. In a news
release from the
U.S.D.E. we read that
“This award honors public and private elementary, middle, and high
schools that are either
academically superior,
or have made dramatic
gains in student achievement and helped close
gaps in achievement
among minority and disadvantaged students.”
Only 5 schools in Alabama were chosen for
this award! Wow! Way to

for a family to visit. It was

Pee Wee Takedown!

On October 10th the Cullman Cyclones beat the Cullman
Bearcats 6 to 0. Ross Crocker ran the ball in for a touchdown.
The Cyclones cheered wildly because they had prevailed for
the first time in four years. Bearcat player, Austin Tankersley,
was asked what his thoughts were before the game. “We are
going to take this!” When we asked him how he felt after the
game he quickly replied, “We’ll kill them next time. Next,
we asked Hope Mason, a Bearcat cheerleader if she was embarrassed about cheering for the losing team. She surprisingly retorted “We lost one game. I’m not going to stop doing what I love!’ There you have it. The Cyclones beat the
Bearcats.
Overtime Overload!

The Bearcats and Cyclones were drenched with sweat and
their hearts were beating with intensity. It was the third overtime and all tied up. There was one quiet moment. The Bearcats scored a touchdown to tie it up, and they were attempting the two point conversion to win the game. Brady Wix
threw it to Hunter Brannon in the endzone to win the game by
two!
Youth for Christ by Savanna Canter
Every Tuesday at 7:15 in the morning Mrs. Bouldin, Mrs.
Neal, Mrs. Carden, and all the students who attend (about
60) gather in the music building to worship and listen to a
guest speaker share the Word. Youth for Christ is a fun
way to learn more about God. The officers are:

Movies

Twilight
Everywhere I look, I see a Twilight book. The saga contains Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.
The entire saga is about an average teenage girl named
Bella. She moves to Forks to live with her dad while her
mother travels. While attending high school she meets
Edward Cullen, and there’s nothing average about him! It
turns out he’s a vampire. Soon after meeting each other
they fall in love. Her best friend, Jacob Black, soon discovers he loves Bella more than life itself. He would fight Edward in a heartbeat for Bella to become his (being mortal
enemies doesn’t help either). He also tries to hide the fact
that he’s a werewolf, but doesn’t succeed. Soon Bella finds
out the life she was once leading is now a game of dangerous vampires and a love triangle. Someone is bound to get
hurt!
Black Eyed Peas
I think we were all heart-broken when we found out the
Black Eyed Peas went their separate ways. I also think that
everyone was more than excited when they heard “Boom
Boom Pow” on the radio. The band has come out with a
new CD. They have also been burning up the charts for the
past few months with “I Got a Feeling”. The group has
been doing better than ever.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
When a wacky inventor makes an invention to change the
weather, he changes it big! Based in the book by Judi Barnett, it starts raining food. Everyone’s dream comes true,
that is until things get out of control and instead of tiny
meatballs, giant ones fall destroying the entire town. What
was once a dream come true is now a disastrous nightmare.
The actors, Anna Faris, James Cann, Andy Samburg, Bruce
Cambell, and Mr. T star in this hilarious children’s flick.

Construction Continues at West : A New Media Center Coming Soon!
We recently sat down with our
media specialist, Mrs. Drake, for
an update on the progress of the
library construction. Here is what
we found out:
S.C.-How big will the new library
be?
Mrs. Drake-It will be 10 feet
longer with the same width as the
present one.
E.D.-What is the coolest thing
about the new library?
Mrs. Drake-In my opinion, it will
be that Mrs. Nail and I will be at
the front desk together.
S.C.-Will there be any new things
or will it be the same?
Mrs. Drake-It will be pretty much
the same, but it will have a classroom separate from the library for
the library lessons.
E.D.-How long do you think it will
be until it is up and going?
Mrs. Drake-Hopefully, around
the middle of March
S.C.– Are you excited about it?
Mrs. Drake– Yes!
E.D.-How many people will be
working in there?
S.C.-Is the rain affecting the
work days?
Mrs. Drake- Mrs. Nail and I will
be and maybe some parent volunteers.

in it?

books we already have, plus
any donated books.

them.

but there will be resource rooms

Mrs. Darnell teaches 4th grade math, and this is her
first year at West.
Coach Ward– My dad

Coach Ward-Shelton State and Athens State University
TR-What do you like most about your job?
Coach Ward-Having the opportunity to positively influence
kids.
HW-What do you not like about your job?
Coach Ward-Nothing. I like everything about my job.
TR-What kind of teacher were you before you came to
West?
Coach Ward-P.E.
HW-Where did you teach before?
Coach Ward– Holly Pond
She has two children, a son and a daughter. Her son is
in college at UNA, and he plans to become a high
school science teacher. Her daughter just graduated
from high school. Mrs. Darnell went to North Western
State University in Natchitoches (nat-a-choses). She
was in her mid 20’s when she decided to become a
teacher. History was her favorite subject, but math has
become her favorite now. She taught 3rd grade at Louisiana Military School. She lives in Addison and drives
here to teach. She thinks that the people here are nice,
and she likes that there is more money here for
schools.
