Sharpe Cynthia Simon Skjodt From the President & CEO: Young Audiences of Indiana as well as YA chapters around the country have been reflecting on the effectiveness of arts in education programs and how they are delivered. A national YA Use and Needs Analysis completed by Wolf Brown this year examines major changes in cultural, demographic, and educational settings in which YA does its work. One of the trends that emerged was a new emphasis in developing the creative capacity of young people and forging formal and informal educational pathways to develop the individuals’ talents and abilities. Young Audiences already approaches the arts in two ways. We value learning in the arts as well as learning through the arts. This philosophy is exemplified in existing programs such as Arts Partners, Summer Arts for Youth, and Young at Arts. Two new initiatives in the planning stage this last year: Welcome to Learning and Arts for Learning will take us deeper into experiencing the “instructive power of the arts”. Welcome to Learning (WTL) will be implemented in 18 IPS kindergarten classrooms starting in January 08. Informed by experience and best practices from our Young at Arts program, WTL will be delivered to our very young learners as a five day arts residency and parent activity focusing on the importance of student engagement in the learning process. YA Indiana is a test site for another new initiative, Arts for Learning (A4L). A4L Lessons is a multi-phase literacy project targeted at grades 3-6. It starts with teacher professional development. Basically, A4L provides teachers with instructional activities and strategies that design arts into the curriculum to improve educational outcomes. Twelve teachers in the Zionsville School District have participated in the training and are using the A4L framework in their classrooms as part of a national field test. There is a great deal more to say about YA programs this past year. Through the entire range of programs and offerings, YA stay committed to keeping the child at the center. Young Audiences thanks all our donors and supporters for helping us demonstrate that the arts are a powerful force in education. Happy New Year! Visiting Artist 1 $300 to $499 Karen O. In 2005, Young Audiences of Indiana embarked on an indepth evaluation of our organization which led to a bold five-year strategic plan. I have been pleased to work with the board and staff throughout this process. There is genuine enthusiasm about taking an honest look at our organization, a look at arts education throughout Indiana, and finding out how others perceive us. As a realist, I know there are challenges ahead: increased account- ability with reduced education budgets and limited time and resources for administrators, teacher, and parents, to name a few. Our strategic planning, and the current implementation process, have given us positive insight as to who we are and how we can move forward in an innovative way. Thank you to our Donors The fees charged to schools for our programs cover approximately half the actual cost of presenting these programs in schools. These fees are subsidized by the donations of the many individuals and groups who share our commitment to providing quality arts education programming to Indiana children. Through their generous support, Young Audiences of Indiana is “Arts Powering Education!” If you are interested in making a donation to assist Young Audiences in our work, please contact Joe Brubaker, Director of Development, at 317-925-4043, ext. 12 We ask that principals, teachers, parents, and children Join Young Audiences of Indiana in thanking the following groups and individuals for their support! Young Audiences artists have stunning impact on students everyday. At Young Audiences, our position is that the enthusiasm and instructive power of the arts can and must be deeply incorporated into the daily educational process. We provide teachers with instructional activities gindhartphoto.com and strategies that design arts into the curriculum to vastly improve educational outcomes, and to prevent American children from falling further behind students in dozens of other countries in literacy and numeracy. Arts4Learning superior gains. Twice the gains in story comprehension. Four times the gains in understanding “author’s choice,” including vocabulary and details. Six times the gains in using “visualization.” Five times the gains in understanding story elements, including the central problem and the relationship of story events to it. Significantly higher levels of engagement in their class work. Keep in mind that these results were obtained not by artists/specialists, but by regular elementary school teachers instructed in the administration of the Lessons. There is much more to say about Arts4Learning Lessons, but of critical importance is this: this program works because the arts are integral to its design, not an add-on or spillover. Until now, the effect of the arts on students has been difficult to quantify. Arts4Learning (A4L) is a program that measurably proves our premise. A4L is a literacy project targeted at grades 3-6. It fully integrates gindhartphoto.com state-of-the-art literacy (based on principles outlined in “How People Learn,” developed by a National Research Council team led by Dr. John Bransford) with highly motivating opportunities for creative expression and reflection through the arts. In the first field test of the Lessons, an independent study found that, versus a comparison control group, Arts4Learning students gindhartphoto.com at every grade and in every district showed Donor Report for Fiscal Year 2006: Contributions Received from July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007 gindhartphoto.com For more on Arts4Learning Lesson contact the Young Audiences of Indiana office. gindhartphoto.com gindhartphoto.com David Hochoy David & Melli Hoppe Elsa M.
