Dear School Families, Our Fall Family Festival takes place this Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 5 pm (following the special 4 pm family liturgy). Please join us for what is always a beautiful, fun evening. It’s a great way to visit with neighbors and school families you have not yet met. Early Bird drawing on our Big Bucks Raffle…our school’s only fundraiser…is another exciting event taking place at the Festival. We hope you can attend. Grades 3 and 4 will attend 8:45 mass tomorrow. St. Barnabas will host High School Night on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 from 7-­‐8:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to sample the local high schools in order to make informed choices. Also, remember that St. Barnabas School will be closed on Columbus Day, October 8, 2012. This is an opportunity for our 7th and 8th graders to shadow at the high school they are interested in, as most of the local Catholic high schools are open that day. We ask our parents to give us “a little more room” while we are dismissing. We ask that parents stand behind the flag pole and beyond. It would really help. Thank you! Our “wall” is growing every day and the students are enjoying reading “the bricks.” Truly we are better together believing in each other. Enjoy your weekend! Sunday Gospel Reflections
Read Sunday’s gospel, Mark 9:30-37.
Gospel Summary
Jesus continued to try to help the disciples understand what was in store for him, but they couldn’t see it. As a
matter of fact, so great was their misunderstanding that they argued among themselves about who would be
first in this kingdom of Jesus. Patiently, Jesus tried again to explain. Gathering in a small child, he told the
disciples that anyone entering the Kingdom of God must enter it as a child. Children in the time of Jesus had no
identity, no legal rights, and were basically “non-people.” In order to be first in the Kingdom Jesus promised, the
disciples (and all who follow them) must be as unimportant as a child in the eyes of society.
Reflection for Families
It may be difficult for parents of our time to think of children as “non-persons.” They are probably the most
important people in our lives! Parents in ancient times loved their children just as parents do today. While children
in our time are protected by many laws, still very few children carry any authority or power in our culture. So
the difference is not in children and parents of two different times, rather the point is how children are
unencumbered by status. Their love for God is fresh and uncomplicated. This is a quality in children we should
consciously observe and emulate.
Bringing the Gospel into Your Family
The gospel message is clear. We need to be of service to one another in order to be true followers of Christ. In an
effort not to put ourselves first, look through your parish bulletin as a family over the next few weeks. See where
you can serve other people in your community. Even if you choose an opportunity where everyone can’t physically
attend, allow other family members to support the service in prayer or maybe sending a note or card to those
being served.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Saturday, October 6, 2012

Is anyone among you suffering? You should pray . . .
Is anyone among you sick? You should summon the presbyters of the church,
and they should pray over you and anoint you with oil in the name of the Lord,
and the prayer of faith will save you and the Lord will raise you up.
James 5:13-15
Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing, and is the prayer of Christ and his Church for
the physical and spiritual health of a sick person. This sacrament was formerly called Extreme
Unction or the Last Rites. In the past, the anointing was done near the time of death. The new
rites restore a proper balance between the pastoral ministry to the sick and the pastoral
ministry to the dying. Therefore, the sacrament can and should be given to anyone facing
serious illness or a serious medical event, such as surgery. The Sacrament of the Sick will be
celebrated at the 4 pm liturgy on Saturday, October 8th.
Who may be anointed?
1. A sick person ought to be anointed before s/he undergoes surgery, whether or not the
surgery is serious.
2. Persons with chronic illnesses.
3. Old persons, even if they are not suffering from a dangerous illness.
4. A sick child may be anointed in order to be comforted and uplifted by the sacrament.
5. Developmentally disabled persons.

Welcome back to another year of tuition savings. Participate in our Manna
program to receive credits on your tuition. Place orders online or on paper,
submit by Monday morning 9:00 am, get your order on Thursdays in your child’s
backpack…and get a tuition credit in July and January! It’s that easy. Online
ordering is very easy…you should get onboard! Contact Sheri Jendra for
instructions on this super easy process. The next order date is Monday,
September 24, 2012. Orders will go home with your student on
Thursday, September 27, 2012. There will be Manna check and carry (6-7:30
pm) tonight, Thursday, September 20. If you are not ordering online, orders may
be dropped off in the school office Monday mornings by 9:00 am and will be

Kemps Nickels For Schools Program To Be
Retired
Kemps would like to thank you for your participation in our Nickels For Schools program, which we
started back in 2002. We are proud to have contributed nearly $6 million dollars to over 4,000 schools
during the past 10 years in the local communities where Kemps milk is available.
For many years, the Nickels For Schools program was embraced as a fundraising tool by a growing
number of schools. However, participation rates have declined dramatically to less than 50% of what they
were during the program’s peak in 2007.
With participation rates continuing to steadily decline, we have made the difficult decision to end the
Nickels For Schools program. In order to prepare your school for this transition, we will continue to
redeem all specially marked caps and proof-of-purchase symbols through November 1, 2012.
Kemps’ commitment to our local communities, and to education, remains intact. In 2013, we’ll be
launching a new education-based philanthropic initiative, as we continue to strive to have a meaningful,
positive impact in the local communities where we operate and where our products are sold.
We imagine you may have questions regarding this news. We hope the Nickels For Schools FAQs will

A NOTE FROM MS. CULLINA…
Once again this year, we will be saving the pink Yoplait yogurt lids for
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation. If you save the lids,
please rinse them, and send to Ms. Cullina in rm. 211. There is a box right
by the classroom door for students to drop off the cleaned lids. Thanks
again for your support for this cause!
YOUR CLASS COULD WIN A PIZZA PARTY!
Welcome to another school year....and to our first challenge for the Box Tops
for Education and Kemps Milk Caps Program. ***
Compete with other classrooms. Simply collect Box Tops and Kemps Milk Caps
and bring them to your homeroom teacher. Please remember to clip your box
tops carefully, and LABEL your bag with your homeroom number on it. I want
to make sure that each class is given the appropriate credit for all of their
hard work.
The Pizza Party Contest will run from October 1st - Oct. 26th. The
Classroom collections will be tallied - and the winning homeroom will win a
PIZZA PARTY! Good luck to all!
***We are sad to say goodbye to our Kemps Milk Caps program - Kemps
is retiring their collection program as of 11/01/12. (see above note in
newsletter) Please send in any milk caps that you have collected with the
Nickels for Schools sticker on the cap - if it's a recent milk cap from
County Fair - it may not have a sticker on it, therefore, will not be
eligible for redemption.
