The Malone
Family Foundation
was established in 1997 by Dr. John
C. Malone, founder of Liberty Media
Corporation, and
his family, with one
principal objective:
to improve access to
quality education—
particularly at the
secondary school
level—for gifted
students who lack the financial
resources to best develop their talents.
Dr. Malone’s life significantly changed
for the better thanks to a scholarship
he received in middle school. Because
of the impact of his independent
school education, Dr. Malone focuses
his philanthropy on education.
Seabury Hall was one of
40 schools nationwide
invited to compete for
the Malone Family
Foundation endowment.
After advancing through several
rounds of the selection process,
the executive director from the
Malone Family Foundation,
Cathie Wlaschin, flew out to
Maui to visit the campus. Asked
why she recommended Seabury
Hall to the Malone Family
Foundation trustees, Cathie
shared, “Though the beauty
of the Seabury Hall campus is
striking, the lasting impression
is of the school’s nurturing
environment and the students’
excitement about learning,
which only reinforced my sense
that Malone scholars would be
happily embraced and developed
to their potential here.” Seabury Hall was selected by the
Malone Family Foundation as
a 2012 recipient of the Malone
Scholarship Program and was
awarded with a $2 million
endowment. The endowment
will be used to fund gifted
students, those ranked in the
top 5% nationally, who might
not be able to afford a Seabury
Hall education.
Seabury Hall is the only
school in the state of Hawai‘i
to receive this distinguished
endowment. Headmaster Joe
Schmidt surmised that “the
Malone Family Foundation
endowment is not only a gift to
the school but a gift to the Maui
community. Seabury Hall and
Maui can both take pride in this
accomplishment.”
MISSION
Seabury Hall is an independent school affiliated with the Episcopal Church
designed to: prepare students for successful college and university work;
move students to develop mind, body, and soul; cause students to realize their responsibility to community.

here are specific times in the life of a school that are truly
transformational and this past year has been one of those times.
We can celebrate the completion of an entire school wide master
plan that began in 1989. This plan called for the development of a
new middle school, a new athletic facility, a new upper school and a
new art center. With the completion of the Creative Arts Center, we
can truly state that we have transformed our campus so that it matches
any school in the country with regards to effective, future-thinking
educational space.
A second transformational event is the Malone Family Foundation
endowment of $2 million that was bestowed on the school. The
foundation sought us out based on our reputation on the national
scene. We were selected because of the quality of our program, school
community and the ability to meet the needs of gifted students. This
gift will provide financial aid for gifted students.
These transformational experiences occur because of the dedication
of an outstanding Board of Trustees, talented faculty and staff, and
well-rounded students and alumni. Through the generosity of all who
believe in our school and their willingness to sacrifice, they ensure that
we make a difference in the lives of young people and provide them
with a future filled with promise.

this school into the nationally recognized institution that it has

Arts Alliance Award
Seabury Hall Middle School was
honored to receive the 2011 Arts
Excellence Award from the Hawaii
Arts Alliance. The Arts Excellence
Award recognizes exemplary schools
that teach the arts as disciplines
and integrate the arts with other
core subjects. Seabury Hall Middle
School was recognized because
of the opportunities to explore art
whether it is an area of passion
or something entirely new in the
Exploratory Program. Options include
both fine and performing arts such
as drawing and painting, ceramics,
chorus, marching band, drama
and technology. The excitement
occurs when teachers enhance their
curriculum with projects and activities
from these areas.

Development Award was a complete surprise to me,
because I didn’t think I was in the running!
Yes, the tears flowed when I heard.
The tears came because I
felt that this award was not
really about me. The work
I do at Seabury is the norm
for school librarians, not
the exception.
Mr. Schmidt made it crystal
clear to all present that
school librarians are
indeed teachers.
The professional development that I choose will
involve travel and will
center around educational
technology. And I will
definitely bring back what
I learn to benefit the
Seabury community.

volunteers, the 39th Annual Craft
Fair was a genuine community
event. Along with the generosity

individuals, over 5,000 visitors
enjoyed the Craft Fair. Under the

raised an impressive $155,000 in

Kimball Wheeler is enjoying life in Guadalajara,
despite recent events. She is currently preparing
solo recitals (Schubert, Charles Ives and R. Strauss
songs) with the brilliant Spanish pianist Javier
Vasquez Grela. In October, the maestra (sounds
pretentious, but that’s what everyone calls me!)
will produce and perform in Music from the Jewish
Tradition. Other projects include a new CD, singing in and conducting her village choir, her third
trip to Manila to sing with orchestra, a premiere
by Mexican composer Demian Gallindo, artistic
and administrative work for the Pro Musicis Foundation, and a busy private vocal studio. Daughter
Amanda earned her Master’s at NY’s Fordham
University and, at 23, became Professor of Modern Communications at Adelphi College on Long
Island, commuting from her home in Brooklyn.
Kimball’s volunteer work includes delivering
crucial supplies to the firefighters in the recent
wildfire in Guadalajara’s Bosque de la Primavera.

Ginger Curtis shares, “It is hard to believe it was
over 40 years ago that we shared our time together at Seabury. I continue to work as a school
nurse, having that wonderful teacher’s schedule
is great. Our daughter just graduated from high
school and will be leaving for North Carolina. It
brought back memories of our day with all those
flower lei and holoku. Kelsey has seen those pictures so it was exciting to pick flowers in the early
morning and string lei for her. It will be interesting
having her so far away but I will try my best to be
brave. She worries I may take up a job at the McDonald’s just off campus. We live in the last little
town before Sequoia National Park. A lovely spot.”
Nevajac Lili Frye lives in Massachusetts, up
near the Vermont border. She tells us, “I lived on
Cape Cod for 15 years, before that Oregon, England for 5 years, Spain. My life has been rather,
er, *colorful* — I trained and showed horses for
many, many years; wrote for a newspaper; managed a restaurant. My passion is garden design
— won an award on Cape Cod for one of my
gardens. I now live with my daughter, 23, and am
helping her raise my grandson, Jax, who is 3. We
are trying to move to Portland (OR, not Maine)
where my eldest son lives — and there isn’t 10
feet of snow in the winter!”
Camie Romer Grenier reports, “Not much new
on this frontier! Coulter, our son, graduated from
high school in June, and is off to UC Irvine this
fall. We are going to Brazil in August to look for a
business to start up, and plan to keep our house
in San Juan Capistrano for the time being.”
Candy Rutherford Hibner is “still teaching
part time in a small private school even though
I officially retired four years ago. I just love kids
and this school so I may be doing this until I’m
eighty. Allie (daughter-25) and Jeff (son-23) are
happily employed and out on their own. Life is
pretty quiet as it is just my
husband Dan, my rescue
dog and me who ramble
around our house now.
Wow, it is amazing how
the years pass. Allie just
got engaged so there is a
wedding to plan for next
year. Jeff lives in Salt Lake so we always have an
excuse to get out of the heat and visit him.”
Brian Jenkins lives in Kula and practices business and real estate law in Wailuku. Brian and
Lisa are raising two adopted Kona Nightingale
donkeys that they are training to be pack burros
for future Crater trips.

her roots and now plays/practices the ukulele on
a regular basis. The songs are recognizable! And,
she really enjoys
it…a nice way to
take her mind off

Barbara Howell Shephard writes that “There
is relatively little excitement in my life!!! Let’s see
– all the kids are now out of the house and Lee
and I are enjoying empty nesting with our dog,
Nellie. I’m working
full time at our high
school as registrar
and really love being in that environment. The best part
is hearing the drum
line in the 300-member band - a far cry from the
high school experience of Seabury Hall in 1971!
Allison got married last fall to a wonderful guy
named Joe. It was a fun day!”
Michelle Steuermann says “I always feel like
I’m being redundant: Growing coffee, raising
chickens, growing fruit and veggies, playing
music... same old, same old. I did go to Kona in
June for a mini reunion of some of the “old
originals” of Seabury. It was hosted by Maile
Mitchell ‘68 Melrose and Meg Greenwell ‘68.

Lots of laughter and stories, some never heard
before. We’re looking forward to a big 50-year
reunion in two years, celebrating Seabury’s
beginning in 1964.”

and I are going again in September. Chris, my
son, is working at Staples and living in Oregon.

of my ‘Jesus with his Kittens’ silk-screened print
on painted board go viral on the Internet earlier
this week. It ended up being blogged and reblogged and I sold a bunch to fun-loving people
who looked me up. I’ve been making a living at
my good and sturdy art from trash since about
1993 and enjoying it very much. I have 1200 folks
on my good and sturdy art email list and send a
note out every week or two
when I post new works. I also
had a fun thing happen when
Cher tweeted a picture of a
friend Ron wearing one of
my ‘What Would Cher Do?’
t-shirts. I sold a bunch of
t-shirts to Cher fans after that.

month(s) of completing the construction of two
single family homes in Haiku. I started about a
year ago with a dream and some time; now we
are painting, setting tile, and getting ready for
internal doors, cabinets, countertops, and electrical fixtures. It’s been an exciting and big learning
process for me, I couldn’t have done it without the
skills I learned at Seabury Hall! I also started my
own energy consulting business call MLQ Energy
LLC here on Maui to help building and equipment
owners reduce energy consumption and costs
(electric, gas, etc.), therefore investing in themselves and producing stunning financial returns.

the rest on the year. I just got back from working
in Antarctica planning projects and I love my job!
I look forward to continuing my work in Antarctica next season.”
Annie Shoemaker is still working at Vassar
Elementary School in Aurora, Colorado. She
shares, “I have a class of 33 fifth graders at the
moment, but my classroom seems to have a
revolving door on it, so we will see what tomorrow brings. Nolan and I have been working on
making our new house a home. I have really
enjoyed all the shopping! Over fall break we
visited Napa Valley for the first time. We stayed
at a bed and breakfast and toured a lot of wineries that we just loved, including a few tours
in caves. I can say with 100% certainty that we
will be back. This summer I was home on Maui
over the Memorial Day holiday to celebrate my
baby brother’s (Steven ’12) graduation from
Seabury Hall!”

2010, she was accepted on team USPA, a national polo team for the United States Polo Association, where she “played some great polo with
the best pros in the nation. I lived in South Carolina for 8 months, then moved to Sarasota, FL to
play some more polo. I decided to move back to
Santa Barbara so I drove across country with my
horse. I’m going to real estate school this fall at
Santa Barbara City College. Maybe study interior

Katie Kilbride loves her new job as a Communications Coordinator for GoPro. “They have me
flying to a bunch of places. Just got back from
Utah, was there a week for this bike dealer camp,
was in LA for the X Games the week before that
and I’m going back to Utah for a tradeshow at
the end of the month. Then, I think Whistler
sometime in August, and Vegas in September.”
From Sam Matthews: “Hey, it’s been awhile so
I have some news! I’m married now and live in
Queenstown, New Zealand, where I’m the Food
and Beverage Manager at Matakauri Lodge.”
Halley Allison Maza has been working on her
master’s degree in school counseling while attaining her license in mental health counseling
from Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk,
VA. She is the Graduate Assistant for Marketing,
Publications, and Community Relations in the
Dean’s Office of Darden College of Education
at Old Dominion University. She is serving on
the Ways and Means committee for the Junior
League of Norfolk Virginia Beach and enjoying
living by the beach.
Raf Oania writes, “In September 2010 I spent a
month abroad in Cambodia shadowing a plastic
surgeon and did free work all over. I was able to
get a good amount of experience and did things
they’d never even think about letting me do here
in the states. When I got back I moved from OC
to LA with a bunch of college friends. In July of
last year, I moved to O’ahu to attend the John
A. Burns School of Medicine. I’m excited to start
my professional career and to take residence in
Hawaii again. If you’re on Oahu...Hit me up!”
Katherine Warrick is living in Columbia, South
Carolina surviving the heat this summer by working as a Financial Advisor with Prudential. She
writes, “Although I received a bachelor’s degree
in psychology I still feel like I’m putting what I
learned to good use. This summer I’m going up
to Maine to see my family including my sister,
Elizabeth Warrick ‘95 Smith, and I finally get to
meet my nephew!”

Lauren Bangerter

communication studies from
Arizona State University in
May 2012 where she specialized in health and lifespan
communication. During her

as a research intern at Mayo
Clinic where she assisted with stress management programming for transplant patients. She
received a fellowship to study at Pennsylvania
State University and will begin her Doctorate
Program in Human Development and Family Studies in the fall of 2012. During her PhD
program, she plans to study biological, social,
and cognitive stress in older adults with specific
interests in prevention research.
Maddi Dellplain has spent the last year “trying
to get used to the winters in Vancouver, while
attending the University of British Columbia. I’m
currently working
to qualify for one of
the more competitive majors at my
school - International Relations. This upcoming school year,
I’ll be sharing an apartment with a new friend
from college and Izzy Lorenzi ‘11. Mark Suzuki
’11 and Connor Hill ’11 visited Izzy and me for
“American Thanksgiving”. Other than that, I’ve
been lucky enough to get in some travel time. In
February, I went to Florence, Italy with my boyfriend and in July I’ll be visiting him in his home
town in Lima, Peru. Overall, it’s been an interesting year and I can’t wait to see what’s next.”

observational astrophysics. After traveling to
the Atacama Desert to see the world famous
telescopes, I have encountered some bizarre and
incredibly beautiful places. I am excited as to
where the rest of my college years will take me,
but wherever I travel, I am always happy to call
Maui my home.”

News from John Bailey: “I recently enlisted in
the Army and my AIT, or Advance Individual
Training, will be in the 11X Infantry Division.
Thankfully I don’t leave until January 2013, so
I get to spend the holidays on island with my
family before 16 weeks of Basic Training and AIT;
which I will complete at Fort Benning in Georgia.
(In the meantime), I work out with other recruits
on weekdays. There are many kinds of specializations with these recruits, including a recruit training for the Airborne Army Rangers. The going
has been tough, but I am glad I finished my high
school career and can get started on my next
step in life in the military.”
This summer, Angelina Demirbag participated
in a two-week Arabic language immersion
program at UH Manoa put on by OneWorld Now
and the Qatar Foundation. Angelina tells us, “It
was a great experience! It is amazing how much
you can learn in two weeks if you apply yourself.
At the camp we learned the basics in reading,
writing and speaking and we had to communicate in Arabic for a majority of the time with our
peers and teachers. Thank you to Mr. Asato for
recommending the program!”
Kyla Greenwell has been working with Americorp through Kupu Hawaii. Kyla shares, “I was
lucky enough this summer to be involved in a
summer conservation program. We spent time
on Oahu, Kaho’olawe, and Maui learning the native Hawaiian culture and species of each place
and helping each group with various projects.
We eradicated invasive species, restored paths,
and planted native plants all over the islands.
Along with a college work scholarship and awesome memories, I gained priceless knowledge
about where I grew up and am happy to say that
I will be leaving for college with a greater understanding of our beautiful island chain.”

Christy Haines and
her family travelled to
Rome, Florence and
Venice, Italy, as well as
Avignon and Paris, France this summer. It was fun
for the family, and Christy particularly enjoyed
seeing all of the art and experiencing the rich
history. It really allowed what she learned in AP
European History at Seabury to come to life. The
rest of her summer will be spent working at the
Kula Animal Hospital and riding horses until she
goes off to the University of Virginia in the fall.
Willy Harris shares, “In lieu of a graduation party,
I convinced my parents to take me on a trip to
Peru. We started our journey in Lima, enjoying
some of the world’s best cuisine. Amazingly, we
ran into Samantha Monge’s ’10 parents. Her
mother, a native Peruvian, gave us information
on the country’s must sees and dos. Shortly after
arriving in Puno to explore Lake Titicaca, my
dad fell very ill and we returned to Lima to see
the specialists. He was well enough to return
to Maui. My mom and I continued on to Cuzco,
where we explored Machu Picchu, as well as the
even higher Huayna Picchu.”
From Yuka Inaba: “I went to Seoul, Korea for a few
days. It was exciting going there for the first time.
Most people spoke English so it wasn’t difficult to
get by. Then, I went to Fukuoka, Tokyo, and Sapporo in Japan. I got to visit some family and friends
before I leave for college, and that was very nice.
The food was great too!”
This summer, Shane Kiyota visited Japan for two
weeks. Shane writes, “During my time there, I did
a variety of things, from visiting Asakusa to shopping for the latest in Japanese stationery. Asakusa
really stood out for me because, not only did I get
to see the temples, but I also got to see the newly
opened Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in the
world standing at a staggering 2,080 feet.”
Jessica Patterson is attending
a ballet intensive with Ballet
West in Salt Lake City, Utah, this summer. She is doing
this in preparation for next year, when she will be
attending The University of Utah in Salt Lake City,
where she plans to double major in Ballet Performance and an undecided academic concentration
-- most likely pre-law.
Laura Mayron spent a month in Peru, where
she worked as a volunteer, teaching English
to child laborers, living with a host family, and
traveling to many wonderful places, including
Machu Picchu.
Gregory Saydah has spent his summer working as
a host at Flatbread Company in Paia and interning for
the Linda Lingle for United States Senate Campaign.
Working on the campaign has been an incredible
learning experience for him; he has really enjoyed
learning how campaigns work, and understanding
more about local and national issues. Gregory is doing
this in preparation to attend Georgetown University in
Washington, D.C. in the fall where he will most likely
be pursuing a double major in Finance and International Business with a possible minor in History.
Tara McBarnet shares, “Apart from working
at the Ma’alaea Retail Store for Pacific Whale
Foundation, I also went on a 12 day surf trip to
Nicaragua with several other Seabury alumni.
The group included: William McBarnet ‘03,
Kale Haywood ‘03, Katrina Neihaus ‘00, Andrew Middleton ‘00 and Terry McBarnet ‘69.
We stayed at Playa Popoyo & Playa Colorado, and
enjoyed hitting the surf and soaking up the sun
from dawn ‘til dusk. Aside from surfing, we also
went hiking, fishing, and embarked on frequent
adventures for exotic animals. Hopefully, next
summer we’ll meet up in another tropical part of
the world!”

Congratulations to Andrew Nelson ’01, Melissa Uhl ‘04,
Jamil Newirth ’98 and Michael Rosales ’02, who received their
Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Hawaii William S.
Richardson School of Law in May.

This summer, Travis Taylor has been doing civil
engineering work and enjoying his last months on
Maui before he leaves for college. He will be going
to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo to study electrical
engineering.
Taylor Yamada has had a busy summer. Taylor
shares, “Of course, it has been filled with a lot of fun
under the sun whether it is cruising at the beach,
hiking the majestic mountains, or just soaking in the
vast beauty of the island. But it hasn’t been all fun
and games. I have an internship at the Hali’imaile
Pineapple Company as a researcher.”

Dear Alumni,
I’ve always been a “numbers” kind of guy.
I love statistics, figures, equations, trends, graphs,
metrics, and records. So let me give you a few
numbers that summarize the Alumni fund drive
for 2012:
• Goal: $35,000.
• Amount Donated: $44,500.
Equates to 27% over the goal.
• Donors: More than twice as many alumni
donors as last year.
• Class Participation: 100%. That means at
least one member from each of our 45 alumni
classes donated.
On the surface those numbers are impres-
sive. It’s clear that Seabury alumni enjoy a challenge and responded well to the class challenge
that JB Guard ’90 and I issued. Congratulations
to Class of 2000 Class Agents Victoria Wayne
Bowley and Melissa Schwab Freeport, winners
of the Greatest # of Donors challenge. I salute
my partner-in-crime, JB, who was successful in
getting a whopping 54% of the Class of 1990 to
participate. Each of these Class Agents received a
Kindle for their extraordinary efforts.
But let’s take a moment to
dig a little deeper and reflect upon
these numbers in the context of current events.
We are living in truly difficult economic times.
Unemployment is high, many are upside-down
on their mortgages, stock prices are more up
and down than my seven-year-old on his pogo
stick. Costs are escalating for college, weddings,
and even food — putting further pressure on our
personal budgets. There is tremendous competition by charitable organizations for our limited
financial resources from the US Olympics, political
parties, animal rights and natural resource organizations, among others.

I just used the entire thesaurus from
Microsoft Word, and I still feel that I’m
understating the results. In my business,
the Aerospace industry, flat is considered the new
up in terms of revenue projections. 27% growth is
off the charts and would not be expected by even
the most delusional vice president. Doubling the
amount of donors in 2012 proves that Seabury alumni
will go way beyond the call of duty.

was very fulfilling for me personally and allowed me to
reconnect to a special place that represents one of the
foundational pillars of my life. And, remember, if you

Class of ’92 Reunion
In celebration of their 20th class reunion,
members of the Class of 1992, joined by other
alumni, family and friends, came together over
the weekend of July 13-15 at Manzanita, a picturesque beach resort located on the northern
coast of Oregon. “There was lots of fun, laughing and catching up.” We hope to see them in
Maui for their 25th reunion in 2017!

We met on a Friday night at Ken and Maile
Mitchell Melrose’s (both class of ’68) for a
spaghetti dinner and a chance to meet and
greet friends we hadn’t seen for 40+ years. It
was awesome. But not as awesome as the
next day. We drove up to the 5,100 foot
level to Meg’s Greenwell ‘68 “cabin” called
Papaloa. It was beautiful old Hawaii up there,
way above the cloud line and part of the

Maiava, who owns Ken’s Pancake House in
Charlotte Melrose
Hilo, brought enough marinated steak, ribs
and BBQ chicken for 50 people. Jillynn Parker ‘67 made an
absolutely gorgeous and fabulously delicious Salad Nicoise
and did all the BBQ-ing on the big veranda at the back of
the house while Michelle Steuermann ‘71 serenaded the
group with her guitar and lovely singing voice. We took a
walk while Maile narrated a historical perspective of the
area. We ate, laughed, ate and told stories all afternoon.
We laughed for hours.
It was magic. We are look-
ing forward to seeing each other
again, maybe at the school’s 50th
anniversary of its founding.

Her classmates remember Karol as a
jokester, who was caring and outspoken.
As an adult, she was dedicated to her
work with non-profits. Karol’s epic
strength and incredible love for her son,
Keoni, allowed her to live long enough to
see him graduate from high school.
Christine was class valedictorian,
a top golfer at Seabury and
beyond, and had a heart of gold
according to school librarian,
Linda Lindsay. She fought a
valiant battle against melanoma
that finally claimed her life.

blessing of the new Creative Arts
Center. Keali‘i Reichel began the
blessing with a chant and presented
the name A‘ali‘ikūhonua to Pardee
Erdman who then bestowed the name
to Seabury Hall.
