All of the work done in the arena this spring really paid off as the footing is amazing! Many of the horses were really feeling their oats and a few riders made unscheduled dismounts. Those that did end up in the dirt probably appreciated the soft landing. They guys kept up the tradition of cooking and gave the gals a much needed break. After Breakfast the kids hunted Easter eggs out around the grounds and counted there loot. I‟m sure more than one little one went home on a sugar high! You only see the striping pattern on the pigmented areas, never on the white areas. Breeders avoid using gray mares because the zorse can inherit the graying gene and lose all his stripes in a few years! You can still see the stripes on the skin. Zorse & Zedonk The zorse is a cross between a zebra stallion and a horse mare. It is also possible to use a zebra mare and a horse stallion, but typically owners of valuable zebra mares don't want to waste a year of their breeding life producing a hybrid when they could be producing a zebra foal instead. do not. The experimental crosses were actually becoming popular until early in the 20th century when the auto displaced the horse and mule. At that point crossbreeding was largely abandoned. A revival of interest came in the early 1990s, with just about every breed of domestic horse imaginable being tried. A zorse generally inherits the striping pattern and some of the conformation of the zebra sire with the size, coloration, and temperament of the domestic mare. Coarse bad tempered pony mares produce coarse bad The crosses were originally tempered zonies. Mares of done in England and Africa to quality, especially Quarter try to produce a domestic horses and American Paint horselike animal that was horses, produce some very resistant to diseases spread by beautiful zorses that have a the tse tse fly in Africa. Zebras good working attitude. If the have natural resistance, where mare has a pattern, such as domestic donkeys and horses Like mules, zorses are born anatomically normal males or females. They exhibit normal breeding behavior. But like mules they are sterile. Males should be gelded as early as a few months old to prevent dangerous study behavior. Zorses tend to be very hardy and live into their 30s with good care. Their temperaments are generally similar to those of their mothers, but like the zebra they do have a strong flight response. Because of this it's best for a first time hybrid owner to get a zedonk instead. When a zedonk startles he freezes up like a donkey rather than bolt blindly like a horse or zebra. We have ordered all of the tack we need to add an extra outfit to our routine for competitions this year. Special thanks to Ken and his crew at K&S for not thinking I was crazy to want white tack and going the extra mile to find someone that would make it for us. With all the tack passed out for the first event I get an e mail from Scott telling me that the saddle pads have shrunk, we had them cleaned last year. Carla and I hit the fabric store. I think the gals there still might be laughing at us for holding up a saddle pad and walking 15 feet away to see how it would look. So material bought, late night for the coaches cutting it all and yet 3 more trips to K&S later we have wonderful pads that fit great! Too bad the weather cant cooperate! This year Stirrin Dust has had more canceled practices then we have had mounted. We have had to get together for 2 make up practices so far. But We are keeping our fingers crossed the rain left with April. May first brought our first debut for MRC. We had a blast and did great. Seeing as how we had a new member Kristin that has only ridden with us twice and Shalesa 4 days off of hand surgery and Scott with a broken collar bone. All riders did amazing. Reminding both Lana and I why we do this. We rode the National Anthem and both Short and Freestyle programs with only one or two hiccups. Bet the audience didn‟t notice them. Riders sported their new Stirrin Dust sweatshirts. Thanks to Shalesa for getting the donations for those! This Saturday brings us to our first event. Stirrin Dust will be riding at Show and Shine a drill event put on by CC riders to kick off the year. This will be held at Rocky Top Arena in Salkum. Stirrin Dust rides at 1:30 and 4:15. We are nervous but sure we will do great. We also have competitions held at Tacoma Unit on June 18-19 and July 14-17. We will be sure to post times so members can come and watch us and cheer MRC‟s Drill team on! Wish us luck. We will have pictures and lots of stories to share at this month‟s meeting. The Tattler page 5 Meeting Highlights Membership: Shannon and Kristen Sydney were voted in as new members, as well as Cindy Wittig and her son Alexander. Welcome!!! We also had an interested visitor Nancy Morrison. Newsletter: Lana is looking for features of interest, recipes, cartoons, for sale and „want‟ ads, Anything of interest please send to her, up-coming events, those with animals in need, 4-H activities, Ideas for a fun day event, etc. Maintenance: Work Party in March got a lot accomplished. The sink and cabinet in the men‟s bathroom replaced, a concrete pad poured under the garbage dumpster, the announcer‟s booth was cleaned and a general branch clean-up. Hospitality: The club is sending a “horse inspired” book for Patti Seldal to enjoy while passing the time recovering from her treatments. We sent the book around for all to sign and send our best wishes. Trails: Trail boss Bryan Cameron is leading the Easter ride at the Little Michel. The next trail ride he scheduled is on May 21st at Taylor Mtn. He plans on leaving the trailhead at 10am. Youth: Vanessa made note that there were no recent pictures of the members on our picture wall so she is helping the kids to make posters and captions for the pictures. She wants you to donate all the pics you can of your recent pictures of the the MRC family activities, especially the “Kids of MRC”. This will be great for our new members as well to recognize others in the club as this has not been updated for awhile. She is concentrating on the kids pics right now, but will accept any fun pictures you have. Drill Team: Several of the newest team members have worked very hard getting donations for the prize ride. Shalesa received a $500.00 donation for sweatshirts for the team, We had $300.00 donation sought after by Alicia and Janetta from the makers of the Black Forest treeless saddles which will be used for half-chaps for the team. They are working on getting a treeless saddle donated as well for the Prize Ride. Lana and Alicia said the team, for donations, will run a company‟s flag during warm-up and other events. Forest Service: The meeting agenda discussed and scheduled the work to be done this year, much of it in the Buck Creek area. The Backcountry Horsemen, it seems, will be helping on Memorial Day weekend while our club is there for our annual clean-up as well. Hopefully they can keep up………. Want to be more involved in the club? We are always looking for more volunteers and there is plenty to do so stop buy a meeting and see what you can do to make our great club even better!!!! Color this horse to look like your horse!! Did you know? There are about 75 million horses in the world. Horses' hooves grow approximately 0.25 in a month, and take nearly a year to grow from the coronet band to the ground. In the state of Arizona, it is illegal for cowboys to walk through a hotel lobby wearing their spurs Cross-country jumps are marked with a red flag on the right side and a white flag on the left side; the horse has to jump through these two flags or it is considered out of bounds and you are disqualified. page 6 The Tattler MRC Contacts & Information Officers: President: Bryan Cameron Cell Phone: 253-282-1646 Home Phone: 360-879-5167 Vice President: Lynnette Lutchendorf Phone: 253-846-2283 Secretary: Michelle Stamaris Phone: 253-841-1588 Treasurer: Deana McCortney Phone: 253-576-8909 Board: Chris Bradley Phone: 253-797-1585 Scott Byrd Phone: 253-318-2121 Colleen Edmondson Phone: 360-451-3803 Sue Ford Phone: 360-458-0536 Patti Seldal Phone: 253-862-0722 Community Service: Shannon Seldal Phone: 253-740-6170 Forest Service: Eric Seldal Phone: 253-740-6180 Hospitality: Needs a Volunteer Membership: Peggy Morris Phone: 253-847-4849 History: Patti SeldaI Phone: 253-862-0722 Maintenance: Needs a Volunteer Nominations: Colleen Edmondson Phone: 360-451-3803 Playdays: Candie Garcia 253-686-3203 Scott Byrd 253-318-2121 Kitchen: Patti Seldal Phone: 253-862-0722 Prize Ride: Shannon Seldal Phone: 253-740-6170 Social: Needs a Volunteer Trails & Men's Ride: Bryan Cameron Phone: 253-282-1646 Women's Ride: Sue Ford Phone: 360-458-0536 Ways and Means: Keith Kaelberer 253-770-9875 Youth Advisor: Vanessa Kuhlman Phone: 253-970-1060 Zone Reporter: Mary Brady Phone: 360-894-5855 Web Page: Scott Byrd Phone: 253-318-2121 ScottByrd@meridianridingclub.org Groundskeepers: Keith & Barb Kealberer Keith 206-7302790 Barb 253-468-7431 Stirrin’ Dust Drill Team: Alicia Burke Lana Affonso 253-797-1982 253-534-6093 Website: http://www.meridianridingclub.org/ The Tattler page 7 Clasifieds Space Available: Have something for sale or trade?
