It is my great pleasure to welcome all students, teachers and supporters from the region to this annual premier event and I hope that you all enjoy participating in it. It is always a good experience when engaging in healthy competition and this FOBISIA event provides the perfect opportunity for all participants to do so. Although success is always at the forefront of every participant’s mind, the opportunity to make friends and meet new people should not be overlooked and neither should the opportunity to engage collectively in positive sporting behaviour. I wish you all every success and hope that you will celebrate the successes of your fellow competitors and teams just as enthusiastically as you support the success and efforts of your own team members. We look forward to joining with you in ensuring that this event is an enjoyable and unique experience for all concerned. I am sure that this event will be a great success! Thailand has a rich culture incorporating rites and beliefs from India, Lao, Burma, Cambodian and China. The Thais are very acceptant, gracious, open-minded, patient and kind people. Losing your temper or patience is considered rude, therefore remember to keep smiling! Thai people enjoy a good time and love to have fun which is at the center of everything they do. The ‘wai’ is traditionally how Thai people greet each other, placing the two hands together in a prayer-like gesture. Royal Etiquette The monarchy is deeply revered by Thai people and strict customs surrounding it are observed. Never speak disrespectfully of the King or of any member of the Royal family. Stand quietly when the Royal Anthem is played. Keep in mind that it is played at the cinema before a movie, therefore you have to stand. Thai people love their King and to show sign of disrespect towards him and the institution is very badly received. The National Anthem is also played in public areas everyday at 8am and 6pm. 26 FOBISIA U13 Games BANGKOK PREP 2015 www.bkkprep.ac.th Orientation The Windsor Suites Hotel is located in the hearth of Sukhumvit, more precisely at Phrom Phong BTS station which is one station away from Bangkok Prep. Please see a list of restaurants close by on page 4. Transportation Taxis There are lots of taxis available in Bangkok and almost everyone can travel by taxi due to the inexpensive rates starting at 35 baht and increasing at only 2 baht per kilometre. Make sure that your taxi driver starts the meter when using choosing this transportation. Fixed rates are not common practice. Bangkok Transit System – BTS The sky train is arguably the best way to travel in Bangkok to avoid traffic jams. Please see a map of the BTS on page 22 and 23. To know more about the sky train fairs please visit their website: http://www.bts.co.th/index_CoverPage.html www.bkkprep.ac.th FOBISIA U13 Games BANGKOK PREP 2015 27 Climate and Clothing The climate here varies in terms of heat. The main factor is the humidity but all the shopping malls and restaurants have air conditioning as too do of taxis, shops, sky train, etc. The sun is intense in Bangkok so sunburn is a concern. We suggest wearing hats and sunscreen as well as light cotton shirts and linens. Entertainment There is lots to do in Bangkok! Restaurants, theatre, cinema and concerts for everyone– Bangkok has seen a huge rise in ‘big names’ visiting in recent times. The cinemas are very good and gold class seats include reclining seats with duvet and waiter service! Standard seats are about 180bt. Eating and Shopping Bangkok has every type of cuisine and every range of price to match. The street food (which is commonly some of the best) starts at about 30 baht for a green curry with rice and may go up to about 100 baht. Also you can visit a website called Food by Phone which has all the restaurants in your area at http://www. foodbyphone.com/. This has been known to some staff as the reference and lists all restaurants on Sukhumvit. Do not worry about hot and spicy food, Thais are very understanding of the foreigners inability to eat firey food. Please consult page 4 of the Information Booklet to have a few restaurants suggestions. Your hotel is located within easy distance of supermarkets and shopping centres. A wide range of international food and supplies is available, as well as fresh local produce. Bangkok has taken on a very sophisticated style over the past 10-15 years with superb restaurants catering for all culinary tastes, pubs and cinema centres showing the latest movies at a very reasonable price. 28 FOBISIA U13 Games BANGKOK PREP 2015 www.bkkprep.ac.th Health Care The hospitals in Bangkok are great, private rooms have satellite TV and en-suite and the doctors are very well trained. The nearest and arguably the best is Samitivej International Hospital which is within a 10 minutes’ walk from Bangkok Prep. If you or your child are on medication or have a need for various medicines these prescription drugs can all be acquired over the counter at one of the many pharmacies here. Antibiotics cost as little as 100bt a strip. In case of emergency please contact a member of staff from the list below. Security Thailand is a very safe place. You can stroll the streets in safety, there is little to no risk of muggings, etc. The security issues here were political and not aimed at harming civilians. The Thai people are naturally very calm and mild natured and this is reflected in their manner. The Games would not be the same without the passion displayed by these groups. Speaking of my own school, I am extremely grateful for the support from the staff and volunteer students of Bangkok Prep’s Primary and Secondary schools and for the tireless efforts (and late nights) of my own PE department. This Competition is, quite aptly, dubbed ‘The Friendly Games’ and I have been constantly reminded of this by the interactions of the children, and teachers, from all schools. It has been a pleasure to host for such wonderful contestants. The encouragement, understanding and support, behind the scenes, by the teachers from each school during the planning phase of the Games has filled me with a sense of gratitude and I hope I can return the ‘favours’ in the future. It would be remiss of me not to mention our wonderful sponsors who, between them, have fed us and kept us hydrated and safe during the duration of The Games. We are all in awe of your generosity and fully appreciate the contributions you have made. Finally I would like to congratulate everybody for their performances and contributions to this year’s U13 FOBISIA Games. It is you who have made this event such a success. Right, time to ‘pass the torch’. Next stop: Penang for the Primary Games. Can’t wait!
