assembly | Designzone in Joanneumsviertel
For four years in a row the Universalmuseum Joanneum has hosted
assembly. Also in 2016 assembly takes place in one of the museum‘s
numerous locations: the Joanneumsviertel. The historic and yet modern
museum is positioned down-town Graz and provides a perfect setting
for the design-festival: Entrance hall, auditorium and the premises of the
Styrian State Library offer the stage for vivid interaction, impressive
design positions and attractive fashion. The enormous glass funnel, which
is located in the entrance hall, is transformed into a „Walking Wall“ presenting artistic and sculptural footwear-design. World literature interacts with
shooting-stars‘ fashion, written polemic fires up bags, cloths and dreams.

assembly | Sales Exhibition & Walking Wall
Opening: Thurs, May 19th, 10:00 p.m.
Joanneumsviertel, entrance Kalchberggasse, 8010 Graz
The sales exhibition takes place until Sunday, May 22nd 2016.
Right after the opening fashion show, the (sales)exhibition opens its doors
with a casual get-together. More than 60 (inter)national designers and artists present their current collections and work. For four days, visitors have
the unique chance to interact with the designers, discuss their work and let
themselves be inspired by latest trends.
Fashion Statements (a selection)
Nelizabeta (SI): Slovenian fashion designer Neli Štrukelj builds on youthful
playfulness, urban independence and unpretentious seductiveness, and spices up her style with her unique character and charisma with her label.
Freelancer Igor Galaš (HR): “Knitting in movement“ is a collection with different knitting details transformed in every movement, by Croatian artist and
designer Igor Galaš, who has graduated at Fashion Design Faculty of Textile
Technology.
Nelizabeta
Ferrari Zöchling (AT): Fashion and photography are blended in Ferrari
Zöchling‘s work. Photographs are printed on silk and viscose and are thus
integrated into the work of the young label from Vienna.
Susa Kreuzberger/Madame with a mission (AT): Her collection „Code
Noire/Féminisme”, is inspired by musician Patty Smith. The designer tries
to redefine the term „feminism“ trying to find design idioms without defined
forms and shapes.
JS by Julia Skergeth (AT): Reduction, minimalism and clear geometric lines
characterize Julia Skergeth‘s footwear-design. She focuses on all-purpose
design unlimited to aspects of gender and purpose.
Roee (AT): The masterminds behind the label ROEE are designer Rene
Pomberger and PR-expert Michael Mairhofer. High-end materials in muted
colors are perfectly combined, each part tells its own story.
Igor Galaš
km/a (AT): Katha Harrer und Michael Ellinger are creating an antidote to the
conformism of off-the-peg fashion. The label‘s unique pieces are made of
materials like parachute canvas used in the 1960s, old army blankets and
tent canvas.
Mariela GemishevA (BG): She is a fashion designer from Bulgaria and
head of the design department at National Academy of Art in Sofia. Her 2016
summer-collection interprets current shapes and meets functional demand.

Walking Wall
The 2016 festival’s motto is „In Motion“ and can be considered a political
as well as artistic statement. Shoes stand for motion. Shoe design by
Carolin Holzhuber (AT/GB), Sharon Golan (ISR), Pavla Podsednikova
(CZ) and students of the University of Applied Sciences Joanneum (A) is
presented on a „Walking Wall“, a special installation on the glass funnel in
the entrance area of the sales exhibition in Joanneumsviertel.
„Symbiosis“ // Carolin Holzhuber (AT/GB)
Born in Austria in 1989, Carolin Holzhuber is turning traditional concepts
of shoes upside down. Each of her flamboyant pairs is hand-made in her
workshop in London. Her current summer-colllection is called „Symbiosis“
and combines art, design and craft trade. Results are sculpturally artistically designed shoes.
„Instant Shoe“ // Pavla Podsednikova (CZ)
Pavla Podsednikova, designer from Prague, is presenting her „Instant
Shoe“. Using 3D-print-techniques Podsednikova customizes the shoe to
the individual shape of her customers‘ feet. Thus, she combines innovative
design, perfect shapes and unbelievable comfort in one piece.
„MyShell256“ // Sharon Golan (ISR)
Eggshell and fruit skin, sea shells and the earth’s crust inspired Israeli-architect Sharon Golan to design „MyShell256“. The modular shoes consist
of 16 modules made of recyclable plastic. The 16 modules can be combined in numerous ways - creating a total of 256 different pairs of shoes.
An interactive website shows how to imaginatively style and re-style the
shoes.

„Future Footprint“ / University of applied sciences Joanneum (AT),
Department of Industrial Design
What will environment and society look like in 10 years? What will resourse-consumption and mass-production lead to? The course „gestalten“
focused on these questions, students are talking a stand. They link their
personal future-scenarios to visionary foot-wear design, for shoes are always a statement. Tobias Kestel and Florian Puschmann (Course Instructors), as well as product designers at White Elephant, consider this to be
absolutely true.

Art Installation by Michael Kienzer
Übertragung“, 2016, aluminum, steel, concrete
Joanneumsviertel-Square
Transgressing thresholds from the in- to the outside seems impossible: fragmented walls are hindering the movement of vehicles - ships or machines - limited
space is absorbing the urge to move. Michael Kienzer‘s art installation is made
of aluminum, stainless steel and concrete bricks and presents a being, that is
whipsawed by circumstances. Also, it can be interpreted as a society, which is incapable of action ... Michael Kienzer: „Besides others, my sculptures often circle
around the term ,movement‘. It is, however, rather clinging to or stopping motion
and interacting forces. Also this piece is playing with mentioned topics, in an altered way, however: the sculpture is abstract, easy in its construction and use of
materials. It is a highly associative, 3-dimensional collage.“
Michael Kienzer was born on June 21, 1962, in Steyr, Upper Austria. He studied
at Kunstgewerbeschule Graz, Department of Sculpture led by Josef Pillhofer and
graduated in1979. From 1981 to 1985 he studied „Sculpture“ at the University of
Applied Arts, Vienna, being taught by Bruno Gironcoli. Since 1985 he has exhibited in many countries. Kienzer was honored with numerous awards, the most
current one was the Prize for Visual Arts presented by the City of Vienna in 2015.
