THE NEWSLETTER OF THE CORONA SCHOOLS’ TRUST COUNCIL Finally, the year has come to an end! We look forward to the hope the new year promises to bring especially with the celebration of our country's one hundred years of existence. DECEMBER, 2013 Lekki, the journey so far From virgin land to construction As expected the year has been filled with lots of learning activities in and outside the schools. We thank God for all the achievements of our children and staff in the course of the year and we specially thank the Almighty God and the Lekki parents for their support during the construction of the first phase of the Lekki School permanent site. It is with great pleasure that we announce the commencement of classes at the site in September 2013. In this edition, we have news of all our achievements and challenges over the term and events to look out for in the new year. Do have a nice holiday. Happy Yuletide! Welcome to Corona School,Lekki Where we are The Board and the Management of Corona Schools’ Trust Council will like to use this avenue to say a very big ‘Thank you’ to all our parents at the Lekki location for your support, perseverance and co-operation during the 5 year stay at temporary sites in Agungi and Idado . To all our parents in other Corona Schools we say ‘Thank you’ for believing in the Corona dream. The journey is not over yet, there is still the construction of the, pool, administrative block, multipurpose hall and swimming pool which is the second phase. Where we are going 72, Raymond Njoku Street, South-West, Ikoyi Lagos 1 Corona Secondary School shines at 21st Century Learning International teacher and School Award 2013 2013 Inter School Quiz Corona Secondary School, Agbara was selected as the third finalist at this year’s 21st Century Learning International Teacher and School competition. The awards, which are sponsored globally by Pearson, are designed to recognize individual teachers and schools who excel in their use of technologies to support student learning. Excerpt from the letter written to Corona by Graeme Deuchars, Director, 21st Learning International. The Inter School Quiz is an annual competition organised for all Corona Schools in line with the Corona culture of building confidence and motivating its pupils to work hard as well as encouraging healthy intellectual development. The 2013 edition marked yet another keen challenge amongst the schools. Representatives of the different schools competed for different prizes with Lekki School, Apapa School, Victoria Island School and Ikoyi School taking the 5th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd positions respectively. Gbagada School emerged champion of the day. This year, a new innovation tagged ‘ word game’ was added and Students from the Corona Secondary School, Agbara spoke to parents on how the Corona education has since primary school, prepared them for leadership roles. Mr Adedotun Sulaiman, Chairman, Corona Schools’ Trust Council at the event, remarked that life is about competition and winning and to win you have to work as a team. “We teach them team work very early and also teach how to be gracious in victory and how to handle defeat. On the part of Mrs Olufunto Igun, the Executive Director, the fact that the scores are always close shows that the schools are doing very well. She reiterated the fact that, it is the same curriculum; same quality of teaching and the same training that the teachers get. This, she said shows that the Corona Curriculum is definitely working and it is working well. “The standard of the short-listed entries was extremely high and it has been a difficult task for the global selection panel to finalise their choice for the School of the Year 2013 award. You are highly commended for the great work you and your school are doing to support students and teachers in using learning technologies. On behalf of 21st Century Learning, and Pearson the global sponsors for the awards, I would like to thank you once again for submitting your entry for the award. He commended the Corona Schools’ Trust Council for its competence in making strategic decisions and successfully dealing with obstacles on the way. Indeed the entire Corona Family is proud of this great achievement and look forward to winning the award in the year 2014. 72, Raymond Njoku Street, South-West, Ikoyi Lagos 2 NEWS FROM THE SCHOOLS Apapa School Gbagada School Corona Apapa Celebrates World Anti Bullying Day MARIO’S WORD CHALLENGE FOR CHILDREN Master Akintomide Salami in Class Three participated in the Cool FM 96.6 Radio Programme – Mario’s Word Challenge for children and answered the question correctly. A representative of Cool FM came to our school on 12th November to present some gifts items to him. The one week event included daily discussions and activities to educate the school community about the ills of bullying. Ikoyi School Ikoyi Day Nursery Austin Jay Jay Okocha Visits Ikoyi School Visit to Lagos State Governor Pupils and teachers of Corona Day Nursery, Ikoyi paid a courtesy visit to the governor of Lagos State-His Excellency, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) at the State house recently. During the visit, the governor read the popular children story, Jack and the Bean Stalk to the children. He spoke to them on the virtues of hard work and obedience especially to their parents and teachers. The Governor also took time to answer questions from the pupils. In response to one of their questions, he disclosed the fact that his grandmother wish influenced his choice of Law as his profession. His Excellency commended Corona Schools’ Trust Council and other private schools for the great contribution towards the development of public schools in Lagos State. The visit ended with the children’s presentation of a birthday song and gifts in commemoration of his recently celebrated 50th birthday. Friday, 4th October 2013 was a memorable day for the pupils and staff of Corona School, Ikoyi. Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay Jay Okocha paid a visit to the school. Claire Amico, Trish Delaney (members of Barclays Group from the United Kingdom) and Odunayo Gabriel (Lagos office) accompanied him. Jay Jay Okocha was all smiles as he shook hands and exchanged pleasantries with everyone. Then he met with the school football team and gave the children safety tips after watching a novelty match on a waterlogged field. He stressed the importance of education and added that determination, hard work, perseverance and discipline would lead to success. The visit ended with photographs and a presentation of gifts and medals to members of the school football team. 72, Raymond Njoku Street, South-West, Ikoyi Lagos 3 Victoria Island School Tit Bits Mosope Bakare a year six pupil won the Diamond Bank Newsletter campaign award in Creative Writing for Corona School Victoria Island and was given a cash gift of One Hundred Thousand Naira .
