I found the experience to be complex. It was inspiring to visit our Congressmen’s offices and tour the Capitol. It was challenging, scary and exciting to hear predictions about the profession. Examples from the presentation by Frank A. Stasiowski, FAIA at PSMJ include, “Licensure may become irrelevant. We will sell our value, not our time. Global corporate trends will change our local market conditions.” It was impressive to hear some of the initial findings and recommendations from consultants, LaPlaca and Cohen, who are leading “Repositioning” (AIA’s latest attempt to lead with relevance). It was discouraging to see the national leadership hesitate. I hope they can seize this opportunity with the quick, critical and visionary actions required. I was mostly encouraged to see that AIA Mississippi’s plan to expand AIA to include allied design professionals in an effort to strengthen our design professions is a direction advocated by the Repositioning effort. I was reminded of two things. I was reminded why I became an architect, to build a better world. I was also reminded how easy it is for the hope of that desire to be lost in the scale and complexity of our every day work and how easy it is take our impact for granted. First because we often do not live the life of our buildings after occupancy and second because very few every day architecture success stories are told. AIA Mississippi is seeking ways to tell those stories to more people. The Design Awards will be held at Mississippi Celebrates Architecture in Jackson and will be open to the public, clients, building users, design team members and contractors. Communications features such as "Trade Secrets" interviews, introductions to our Individual Allied Professional Partners, Year-in-Review Publication, design competitions and other special features seek to highlight the every day successes and value of our work. As attention was given at Grassroots to emerging professionals, young architects, intern architects, and other subset descriptions, I was reminded of the difficult transition from architectural education to practice. I consider myself fortunate to have realized early in my career that the term “practice” is hopeful and educational. Our failure may be that we see these aspects of an architect’s world so differently. Practicing is the best possible way to learn, and neither endeavor should be an end in itself. Perhaps one of our most important efforts is to promote the dialogue about what we do with expanded communications (new website under construction, facebook and twitter accounts active with member content), founding of YAF group and an enlivened and involved group of Associates. I worry that AIA may have become a symbol of all of the difficulties of “practice”. I sincerely hope it has not. Overcoming these difficulties is not the loss of our hopes, but the path to realizing them; to infusing them with the breadth and depth we did not have when we formed them. A colleague at the conference PRESIDENT’S CORNER CONTINUED ON PAGE 7 why be a member of AIA? Membership in AIA offers a multitude of benefits, so many that you may be unaware of them. AIA provides Tools and Resources to support and promote the goals of individual members and the common Architectural Profession causes of advocacy, community and knowledge. AIA is the Professional Association for Architecture. It has a long standing foundation, but it grows and improves by your involvement. A Presidential Citation was presented to Ann Somers by 2012 Outgoing President Jared Pierce. It was a great evening for everyone in attendance. Check out these and many more photographs from the event on our Facebook page. AIA MISSISSIPPI HOSTS “ROAD TO FELLOWSHIP” WORKSHOP AIA Gulf States Region held a workshop on November 12, 2012 for all those interested in “de-mystifying” the Fellowship process. The workshop offered an informative view into the process from two excellent presenters/mentors. Lee Askew, FAIA (Memphis) recently served as a member of the Fellows Jury, while Allen Eskew, FAIA (New Orleans) was instrumental in developing the Fellows Workshops. The program received a great turnout with attendees from across the Gulf State Region. Positive reviews were abundant, revealing this workshop to be apt and timely. The workshop was held at the Old Capitol Inn, one of AIA Mississippi’s valued MAPP Partners. 4 AIA MISSISSIPPI FIRST QUARTER 2013 BELINDA STEWART ELEVATED TO COLLEGE OF FELLOWS DID YOU KNOW? You may know the AIA has an Emeritus Membership status that waives annual membership dues for members who retire with 15 consecutive years of AIA membership. But, did you know that at last year’s convention, the AIA voted to change the age requirement for Emeritus Membership from 65 years of age to 70? A Letter of Recognition from AIA MS President Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the AIA Mississippi Board of Directors, I extend our congratulations to Belinda Stewart. Belinda Stewart has been elevated to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects! This is a high honor and a distinction that is well-deserved. The College of Fellows recognizes Architects whose careers are making real and lasting impact on the profession and our culture. Belinda has been serving her community and the State of Mississippi as an exceptional architect in the broadest sense of the term for many years. She is a trailblazer, a successful architect in small town, Mississippi, the first female President of AIA Mississippi and now the first female Fellow of the Institute from Mississippi. From her practice to her public service, Belinda Stewart’s career is an example of the positive impact an architect can have on his or her community. Belinda has given decades of sustained effort and dedication to preserving and improving the built environment. She has utilized architectural principles and design thinking to make each building, institution, organization or community she encounters better than she found it. Each renovation, new building and historic restoration has kindled or revived a community’s pride and sense of place. Her contribution to the greater good is evidenced in her work and in numerous local, state and regional design awards, leadership recognitions and publications. Her genuine and unwavering commitment to public service is proven not only in her body of architectural work, but also in her individual leadership, from business leader to four-term Mayor of her beloved home, the Village of Walthall, Mississippi. DID YOU KNOW? AIA has its own political action committee that was founded in 1980. ArchiPAC was formed to help serve as a voice for the architecture profession in Washington. If you are not familiar with Belinda’s career, please review the attached Summary of Achievements, a part of her submission to the College of Fellows. It will give you a taste of the work Belinda has completed so far and make you proud to be an architect in Mississippi. Sincerely, See more information on how to get involved or donate. The IgCC is a new model code that serves as a tool in designing energy efficient buildings and structures. This new model code also helps to provide sustainable practices to be applied to everyday construction. Read more here... Overview The 2012 IgCC was published by the ICC in late March 2012. The American Institute of Architects supports the development and adoption of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC), which provides model code language for states and municipalities to establish baseline sustainable design requirements for new and existing buildings, including but not limited to, energy and water use efficiency; materials and resource use; indoor environmental quality; building impacts on the environment; site design; and sustainable building owner/facility management education. The people voted and a winner was chosen. The 2012 AIA Mississippi People’s Choice Award Recipient is The Mississippi Children’s Museum, by Canizaro Cawthon Davis! Congratulations! AIA MS LUNCHES HELD AT GEHRY MUSEUM AIA Mississippi’s Biloxi Monthly Lunch meetings are now being held at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum in Biloxi, Mississippi. The museum is currently the only Mississippi work by architect Frank Gehry, FAIA. The first luncheon was presented by AIA Mississippi Silver MAPP Partner, AMA Lighting. Presentation was given by Robert Deweese on Designing Sustainable Visual Environments. AIA MS SIGNS UP INAUGURAL INDIVIDUAL ALLIED PROFESSIONAL PARTNER! Interior Design at The Ramey Agency Project by Canizaro Cawthon Davis AIA Mississippi welcomes its first Individual Allied Professional Partner Sheryl Fox, IIDA of Canizaro Cawthon Davis! Contact an AIA Member today for more information! 6 AIA MISSISSIPPI FIRST QUARTER 2013 AIA MISSISSIPPI AT GRASSROOTS 2013! PRESIDENT’S CORNER CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 said to me that he “bled AIA”. I thought to myself, “I do not bleed AIA, I bleed Architect”. That is why the AIA Manifesto, the Repositioning consultant’s immediate call to action, comforted me. I volunteer in and am a member of AIA for one simple reason. It IS the professional association of "America’s Architects". We are Mississippi’s Architects! In a state of such rich cultural heritage, our challenge, every day, is to help make authentic, culturally relevant, functional and impactful buildings for our communities. I do not know how “Repositioning” will work out at the national level, but I do know that it does not really matter. We, each one of us, are the AIA. AIA Mississippi’s foundations are sound (rebuilt by our membership and its leaders over the past few years). We have prioritized, we have diversified, and we are collaborative, inviting in Allied Individual Professional Partners and strengthening our relationships with Company Allied Partners. What we are doing now is a model for AIA in general. If we want to realize a better world, we must make a more relevant profession, together. You can make a difference at AIA Mississippi. Step onto a committee, contribute your individual perspective to the goals and help make things happen. Thank you to Senator Roger Wicker, whose staff spoke with us so intelligently about the importance of resiliency, Congressman Gregg Harper, who greeted us warmly and provided us (via Taylor Luczak) a most informative tour of the U.S. Capitol, Congressman Steven Pallazo, whose staff was genuinely interested in the Safety Assessment Program of AIA/MS as potential assistance to the residents of the MS Gulf Coast and Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, who sat with us personally and offered helpful suggestions to build our Disaster Assistance efforts. 7 AIA MISSISSIPPI FIRST QUARTER 2013 DID YOU KNOW? AIA Mississippi is in the process of redesigning the website! One improved feature will be updating the "Find and Architect" and "Find a Firm" resources. DID YOU KNOW? Applied Software will be providing a two-hour Educational Seminar on Revit with a focus on firm owners at the AIA MS Convention in July. with MAPP PLATINUM APPLIED SOFTWARE ARTICLE AND INTERVIEW BY SHANNON F. GATHINGS One of the most exciting events of the annual AIA Mississippi Convention is undoubtedly the Product Expo. Wandering the ballroom, speaking with AIA MAPP partners who diligently attend and give their support is a great opportunity to show how much their efforts are appreciated. One particular booth hums with activity as convention attendees huddle around a computer as the latest and greatest in software is demonstrated for all who "...the longest association with stop by. Maybe you just stopped by for the AIA Autodesk in the world." Buck but Applied Software is offering more than a chance to win a prize at the Annual Auction. Applied Software is committed to making their booth visually interactive and educational. Applied Software is committed to Mississippi Architects. A Partner with AIA Mississippi for 3 years, Applied Software offers AIA Mississippi members insight into the new and upcoming technological trends and advancements. With offices located throughout the Southeast, Applied Software is one of the largest Autodesk resellers in the region and the reseller with the longest association with Autodesk in the world. Applied Software was founded in 1982 and is the premier, full-service professional services firm serving the AEC and manufacturing industries, and leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) services provider. Applied Software’s Work in Mississippi DID YOU KNOW? The latest trend in futuristic modeling is 3D Printing. Applied Software can help your firm produce 3D Printed Models, see some examples shown photographed in this article. Fiona Pratt, AIA Although Applied Software is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the familiar face you are likely to see around Mississippi is AIA MS Chapter Representative Fiona Pratt, AIA. Fiona travels from Alabama to Jackson at least once a month for various consulting opportunities. Fiona is a registered Architect with 25 years of experience in practice, with a depth of experience in building design, construction administration, project management and BIM adoption. She joined Applied Software in 2010 as a Strategic Account Manager in the AEC industry. Her skills have benefited clients in the integration of enhanced technology solutions in real business and project situations. 8 AIA MISSISSIPPI FIRST QUARTER 2013 I had the pleasure of interviewing Fiona for this article. What is immediately apparent is that she genuinely enjoys her work, a common trait among the Applied Software team. In March this year, Applied Software held a Biloxi CEU Lunch about Technology for Multi-Tasking Design Development Workflows. Heading this seminar was one of Applied Software’s experts, Charisse Smith. Charisse is one of Applied Software’s Strategic Account Managers and provides services for AIA MS members along the Gulf Coast. With 20 plus years in the Autodesk Reseller Channel and complete Autodesk certifications for both the AEC and MGF industries, Charisse is another one of the extremely helpful and particularly qualified technicians vital to Applied Software’s services for Mississippi Architects One of the ways that Applied Software has chosen to get involved in Mississippi is through the Mississippi State University College of Architecture. For the past 3 years, Applied Software has been working with the 3rd year architecture students by working together with faculty and designing an intensive two-day Revit training workshop. The workshop is integrated into the course curriculum, allowing them to further their studio design while learning to operate BIM programs at the design development level. For instance, Fiona noted, “there is a little known tool in Revit, very similar to Google Sketchup, that allows the designer to sketch three-dimensionally before getting into too much detail". Of course this can be an important tool for someone who is “learning the ropes”, and a great skill for young designers to learn as they develop design proficiency. Charisse Smith Trade Secrets When asked what Trade Secret she could share with AIA Mississippi, Fiona spoke about the value of the Applied Software Team. Applied Software members have a minimum of 15 years’ experience in diverse backgrounds. These professionals become experienced project managers, BIM managers, specialists in construction, mechanical, plumbing and more design and construction based areas. “This knowledge allows the team to excel in offering Architects as well as Owners a leading advantage in delivery as well as their ability to win projects”. Applied Software prides themselves on being at the leading edge of technology and hopes that Mississippi Architects continue to embrace the power of up-and-coming technological advances. When asked, "How does Mississippi compare to other states in the region that Applied Software services? Are Mississippi firms really open to the newest technologies?,” Fiona admits, “there is sometimes a bit of hesitancy to move into new technology.” This is a natural reaction to change, but moving forward is vital to progress. Applied Software will continue to be a part of Mississippi moving forward. Applied Software’s approach is to give clients the right technology they need according to their firm, to “find the right fit”, to leverage the skills a firm’s staff already has and Revit Model of Puckett Machinery New Facility by Cooke Douglass Farr Lemons Three-Dimensional Printed Models Developed with Applied Software Technology make them even better. Special thanks to Fiona Pratt,AIA for the exclusive interview and to Julie Jandel at Applied Software for providing info and images. In some states the titling for young professionals is limited to “applicant” or simply “intern”. Find where we land among other states. AIA MS would like to announce the formation of a new component group. Young Architects Forum (YAF) is organized to address issues of particular importance to recently licensed architects (within 10 years or fewer after licensure) and young designers/interns. YAF is open to all recently graduated architecture students, designers, interns, young architects, & those who wish to mentor. Throughout its history, the YAF has had three goals: 1. To encourage professional growth and leadership development among recently licensed architects through interaction and collaboration within the AIA and allied groups. 2. To build a national network and serve as a collective voice for young architects by working to ensure that issues of particular relevance to young architects are appropriately addressed by the Institute.
