Five New Strategic Projects in Kentz
will also be establishing compliance
criteria and user criteria for each system.
Over the last number of years we have
delivered a number of strategic projects in
Kentz which have provided both the
platforms and the structure to allow us to
grow our business on a global basis. Five
new Strategic Initiatives were developed as
a result of the Annual Strategic Conference
held in Cyprus on 14th and 15th November
2007. A Leader was appointed for each
initiative at the last Board of Management
meeting, held on 28th February 2008 in
Dubai. Each Project Leader is responsible
for coordinating a team and commencing
work on the Strategic Project. See a brief
outline of each New Strategic Project
below.
We also aim to change the management
plan to cover the switch-over period. This
will involve introducing an Operational
Excellence Programme which will ensure
that all employees in decision-making
positions, all that are either new to the
company or earmarked for promotion
clearly understand how the company
conducts its business: how the various
functions integrate and to understand and
make full and proper use of the various
systems the company uses in running its
business.
The team includes Eamonn O’Hanlon,
James Cassin, Bob Greaney, Joe Keogh,
Dave Ross, Niall Barry, Joe Cassin and
Chris Warlow.

New Skills Testing
Assessor in Kentz
This project involves completing a strategic
acquisition in the oil and gas upstream
industry and leveraging this acquisition
with the Kentz global footprint and client
base. We intend to use such new capacity
to deliver solutions in three new areas;
marginal oil & gas field developments, including complete early
production process plants; offshore deepwater solutions in delivering
FPSO topsides; and complete small to mid-size process plants both
onshore and offshore.
The team includes Hugh O’Donnell, James Moore, Ed Power, James
Clarke and Dave Beldotti.
2. Focus and Alignment around Key Clients
This project involves gaining attendance and membership of Three
Key Forums where our key clients currently participate. We also aim
to develop and roll-out a framework to manage Key Client
Relationships. Another aspect of this project is to identify and
commence Social/Community/Environmental Projects with clients.
The team includes Martin Walsh, Mick Ross-Lonergan, Mick Costello,
Alan McFadden, Donna Gray and Pat Cass.
3. Systems Compliance
Melissa O’Connor, Training and
Development Administrator in the
Clonmel Office, recently completed a
Level A training course in
psychometric skills testing in the SHL
People Performance office in Dublin,
Ireland. This will allow Melissa to
become fully involved in the
assessment process of apprentices in
Ireland in 2008.
By using the SHL ability tests, we can
guarantee that we are selecting the
best candidates possible, and we can
rank and compare candidates. This
will give us a competitive advantage
over other companies that do not use
these assessment tools.
Human Resources are committed to
developing the employer brand and
making Kentz an employer of choice.
The aim of this project is to ensure consistent compliance with the
Integr8 Systems, HR Systems and Integrated Management Systems.
We plan to identify all systems/applications currently under review or
being written, developed or purchased and other systems in place
outside Integr8. We also need to understand the scheduled roll-out
plan for Integr8 and see if it will work in the real world. This project
Long Service Awards
At a recent event Eoin
Hurley, Regional Director,
Kentz Southern Africa,
presented
long-service
awards to four employees
who have worked for Kentz
for a combined period of over
70 years.
They were
presented with framed
commemorative plaques on
the occasion. The following
people were honoured on the
night:
INTERNAL
COMMUNICATIONS
SURVEY
Look out for the 2008 Internal
Communications Survey coming
to your in-box soon
Les Harper
Les has worked with Kentz
for 17 years and his
15-year
service
was
acknowledged
at
the
ceremony. He joined Kentz
straight from school and has
been working his way up the
ladder to his current position
of IMS Manager in the
Projects Division of Kentz
Southern Africa.
Christian Dumas
Christian also received his
15-year service award.
He has been working in a
variety of roles throughout
Southern Africa including
Quantity
Surveying,
This project will include developing new
approaches in attracting people to the
company and new approach to recruitment.
We aim to do this by various means, such as
utilising a head hunting company for senior
people, research salaries and market trends, differentiate between
personnel/recruitment and HR, improve methodology of our sell,
emphasise our family ethos, expand recruitment road-show to
incorporate major trade exhibitions and improve contract format to
reflect more clearly the position of proposed candidate.
One of the key initiatives within this project is to establish new labour
markets/countries from where we can source new resources. Up to
now, Kentz has been trying to draw from the same "well" in terms of
recruitment. However, this "well" is practically empty in a lot of cases.
Within this project, we aim to develop a matrix of countries outside of
those from which we are currently drawing, where each country will
have one or a number of specialist offerings in terms of skill sets.
The team includes Mike Murphy, Takis Karallis, Adrian Griffin, Gwen
Gannon, Noel Kelly, Keith Barry and Katrina Farrell.
5. Expanding Civil, Mechanical and Piping Capabilities
This final Strategic Project will involve examining the business
feasibility of expanding our civil, structural, mechanical and piping
construction capabilities, particularly with a view to enhancing our
EPC capability. Once confirmed, we aim to develop a strategy,
business plan and recommendation for implementation of the
expansion.
The team includes Neil O’Mullane, Eoin Hurley, J.C. Walsh, Chris
Warlow, Luigi Bruni and Steve Warlow.
Commercial Manager roles
in Botswana and Kentz
Mechanical,
Electrical,
Instrumentation and Piping
(MEIP). In 2007 he took up
the role of Regional Project
Controls Manager.
Gertrude “Gertie” Mabizela
Gertie received an award for
20 years service. She was
originally employed as a tea
lady in 1987 but was keen to
better herself. She was
subsequently taught how to
operate the fax machines
and was responsible for both
incoming and outgoing
faxes, as well as mail
distribution, and the busy
mail room soon became her
domain.
Gertie
has
progressed
to
office
assistant. She is still
responsible for incoming and
outgoing mail and has been
taught to master basic
computer skills.
Brenda Carter
Brenda joined Kentz in 1981
having emigrated from the
UK. Working for a safari
company based in Botswana,
she spent four years
escorting travellers around
Africa. For various reasons
this type of travel became
unsafe and the company
closed.
Brenda was
widowed and contemplated
returning to the UK, but
decided to further her
education and received a
Diploma
in
Business
Management and at the
Witwatersrand University
she obtained a degree in
Interpersonal Skills. Soon
after, Brenda joined Kentz
and the office wouldn’t be
the same without her.
Brenda is also the chairlady
of the infamous in-house
“Corkonian” pub.

2009 HSE Calendar
Competition
Following on from the success of
the 2008 calendar competition,
we are now accepting entries for
the 2009 HSE Calendar Competition.
Health and Safety is our main priority in Kentz and in order to
communicate this message effectively we need your help and the help
of your children.
Kentz Ireland is doubling its efforts this year with over 40 new electrical apprentices set
to join its projects over the next four months.
Donal O’Neill, HR Systems and Graduate Development Manager, is running the
Apprentice recruitment campaign for Ireland with assistance from Pat O’Shea, General
Manager, Kentz Ireland, and from FÁS Waterford through Eamonn McGettigan, Services
to Business Manager.
Children view the world differently and we at Kentz are very interested to see
what it means to your children to be safe, healthy and have respect for the
environment. We are looking for your children to illustrate their thoughts in the
form of a picture. The winning pictures will be collated and will form the 2009
HSE Calendar. This calendar will help us communicate the importance of
Health, Safety and Environment, not only to Kentz employees but to their
families also.

MBA Workshop
The Internal MBA Set 2 completed their second workshop in the Elite Spa
and Resort Hotel in Bahrain from 2nd-5th February. Over a very intensive
four days the participants introduced their dissertation proposals which
were then reviewed by Dr Eric Sandelands and Dr Haydn Ingram.
The workshop covered the following areas:
• Research Methodology
• Strategic Management
• International Business
• Dissertation Process
• Kentz Business Perspective.
A unique feature of the programme is that each MBA associate must address
a live, strategic issue through their research and be able to demonstrate
value to Kentz from the implementation of their projects.

Kentz-Fluor Win Yet Again
The Kentz-Fluor Cricket Team posing proudly after the match.
The final of the first Oil Sector Tournament of the season organised by Kuwait Oil
Company (KOC) Cricket Committee and sponsored by Petrofac International Ltd was
played on 22nd March 2008 at Ahmadi Cricket ground. Kentz-Fluor and
Schlumberger fought it out for the trophy, which was comprehensively won by KentzFluor by a margin of 34 runs.
A collective effort and a great team spirit, led to this great win. The major
contributors with the bat were Pradeep Varma (50 runs) and Team Skipper Melwin
(39 runs). It was Pradeep Varma again, along with Nihal Uddin, who excelled with the
ball by claiming 3 and 4 wickets respectively.
Pradeep was given the “Man of the Match” title for his brilliant all-round
performance. This veteran’s consistent performance over the past couple of years is
praiseworthy.
The Kentz-Fluor team has made all of us proud by bringing home yet another
cup to adorn the trophy table. All at Kentz take this opportunity to congratulate
the Kentz-Fluor Cricket team on this victory and wish them all the best in the coming
years.
Qatar Too Good For Dubai in Football Thriller
On 6th March, the Qatar Gaelic football team, Oryx na hÉireann, took on their counterparts from Dubai at
the Doha Rugby Club and Kentz was there in full force to support their team.
The Qatar team, eight of which are Kentz employees, did themselves proud on the field. The Kentz
contingent included; Killian Coleman, Keith Fortune, Alan McFadden, Brian Denehan, Anthony McFadden,
Shane Kelly, Mick Cremin, Andy Daykin.
Having beaten Dubai only once in the short history of the club in the Bahrain finals in 2006, the home team
made up for past close encounters by clocking up a very impressive score of 4:20 to 1:11. A good crowd
consisting of senior management, staff and some Kentz clients were on hand to cheer on the team, and
Oryx na hÉireann responded with some quick and attractive interplay and decisive finishing.
The strengthening of the football team can be directly attributed to the growth of company activities in
Qatar, with a significant portion of the panel holding Kentz passports. This victory will give the team a huge
lift, as the Dubai Celts have been the benchmark in the region for years. Going forward the team, will set
its sights on the Asian games in Penang, Malaysia from 3rd-5th October 2008, where they will pit
themselves against the best in Asia.
The Natref Team.
Building Bridges Over Vaal River
Celebrations went on late into the morning and next day in the Harp Bar. A big thank-you should go to the
Dubai Celts for travelling over and also for their sportsmanship. The Qatar GAA backroom staff would also
like to request that Kentz HR remember the date of the Asian games when handing out overseas
assignments to young graduates and apprentices with footballing pedigree!
Kentz Maintenance and Shutdowns Division, South Africa, continues to embrace an
increasingly demanding industry and extend their business throughout the country.
Part of this entails building client relationships and none was more pleasant than the
recent boat cruise on the Vaal River with Natref (only inland crude refinery JV
between Sasol and Total).
Considering recent attempts to enjoy and build a founding relationship, the event was
welcomed by all parties. The group set sail on Thursday 17th April from the Riverside
Hotel, Vanderbijlpark, on a 3-hour cruise down the Vaal River. All enjoyed a scenic
view, fantastic homes along the banks of the mighty Vaal, wildlife and aquatic life.
The “Liquid Lounge” had guests’ palates wet with a wide selection and an abundant
supply of cold beverages, followed by a satisfying 3-course meal.
The event was a huge success for both Kentz and our client Natref, as the time draws
nearer to an ever-demanding shutdown. We sincerely hope to extend the event’s
success into and beyond the shutdown as the division strives for long-term goals.
The successful Qatar Gaelic Football Team.
Céilí Session in Jack Meade’s
On Thursday 9th April, as part of the HSE Conference held in
Faithlegg House Hotel, Co. Waterford, Ireland, a local night
of celebration was held in Jack Meade’s pub, Co. Waterford.
This was attended by the majority of the HSE Conference
delegates.
For a typical Irish night, typical Irish weather prevailed,
forcing most guests indoors where hot punch was at the
ready to warm them up. After a delicious buffet dinner, Irish
dancers took to the floor. The “Reel Irish Dancers” are from
Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland and have performed in
Sakhalin Island for Kentz for the past two St. Patrick’s Day
celebrations.
The dancers put on an impressive display of traditional Irish
dance, mingled with modern dance influences. After

watching the dancers in all their glory, it was time for guests
to show what they could do on the dance floor. Under the
guidance of the “Reel Irish Dancers” a céilí (Irish dance
session) was soon in full swing, accompanied by a 5-piece
traditional Irish band. Strains of the “Siege of Ennis” rang
out late into the night as both international and Irish guests
learned how to dance in the traditional Irish style.
Presentations were made on the night to Kelly O’Shea and
Donna Gray as a thank-you gesture from James Cassin &
Mairéad Roche for all their help in organising the HSE
Conference.
A great night was had by all and hopefully the dancing
lessons will go to good use in the future!

Celebrating
St. Patrick’s Day Around

Secunda,
South Africa
Brisbane,
Australia
The Kentz team in Secunda recently hosted
their traditional St. Patrick’s Day celebration
in the form of a South African braai
(barbecue) for clients, site-based staff and a
few Head Office invitees.
This year the Finance Department in the Thiess
Kentz Brisbane office organised a party for the
whole office for St. Patrick’s Day. The office was
awash with green as the employees enjoyed
green drinks accompanied by green napkins,
green plates and staff wearing green clothes.
The staff then enjoyed an Aussie sausage sizzle
(no Guinness pies or potatoes were on the
menu).

The ladies in the Midrand
office arranged drinks and
snacks in our in-house
“Corkonian” Pub to celebrate
St. Patrick’s Day. There was
an excellent turnout and it
was great to see members of
staff who don’t usually
frequent the pub participating
in the fun. Thanks to all
concerned for a great party.

Due to bad weather conditions a number of
guests were unable to attend, although this
didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of those
who did. There was great representation
from Linde Uhde and Sastech. The highlight
of the evening was undoubtedly the karaoke
- needless to say, not all the “Bono
wannabe” singers were blessed with Celtic
voices. Once again, thank you to Nick
McCarthy and his team for a
great evening.

The staff of Kentz in Lunskoye OPF, Sakhalin
arranged a festive Irish day at the bar of
their client, Sakhalin Energy Investment
Company (SEIC). Invitations were sent out to
over 200 people with many of them
attending the event. There was a vast mix of people with
representatives from SEIC, BETS and KentzDem. BETS are the main
contractor on the project.
The management of Kentz in Russia would like to welcome on board
the new Kentz Senior Project Manager,
Ross O’Muirthile. Also many thanks to

Kentz South Africa was at a global Oil
Africa exhibition recently at the Cape
Town International Convention Centre.
As the first day of the conference and
expo fell on St. Patrick’s Day the
organisers decided to host a St. Patrick’s
Day cocktail party for guests/exhibitors.
To mark the occasion, Pat Cass,
Marketing/PR Executive for Kentz South
Africa, arranged for two young students
to act as hostesses and hand out custommade chocolates to attract clients to our
exhibition stand.
St. Patrick’s Day
balloons, green top hats adorned with
shamrocks and sashes for the girls
completed the theme.
The guests enjoyed free drinks and nice music until late into the night.
As the first official Kentz party on site, it was a great success.
Green attire and celebration filled the Irish Cultural Center in
Calgary, Canada on Saturday 15th March 2008. Kentz’s CEO Dr
Hugh O’Donnell, as well as Kentz Canada employees, Kentz USA
employees, Kentz’s clients and friends all attended the fabulous
evening. There were award presentations for service, guest
speakers, and Irish dancing by Scoil Árd na Gréine – students from
the local dance school. The dance presentation by Scoil Árd na
Gréine was outstanding and the band D2R provided guests with
great music to dance to. The evening embodied the celebration of
St. Patrick and was enjoyed by all who attended.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk,
Russia
Doha, Qatar
On Friday, 14th March Kentz staff from the Yuzhno office held St.
Patrick’s Day celebrations in the Mega Palace Hotel in YuzhnoSakhalinsk. As Kentz introduced Irish hospitality to Yuzhno last
year, the St. Patrick’s Day celebration has quickly became one of
the most popular events of the year in town.
Qatar Kentz was once again proud to be the
Platinum sponsor of the Qatar Irish Society
St. Patrick’s Day Ball, which was held on
Thursday, 13th March 2008 at the Ramada
Plaza Hotel in Doha, Qatar. Over 500 people
attended the ball of which 150 were guests of
Qatar Kentz. Clients from Shell, KBR, Fluor,
Qatar Gas and Ras Gas were in attendance, to
name but a few. We were also very honoured
to welcome Noel and Noeleen Kelly.
Guests were treated to a dazzling display of
traditional Irish dancing by Áine Davison and
Candida Meyers, both of whom looked
dazzling in their costumes. And then it was
time for the raffle to begin. With many great
prizes up for grabs which had been donated
by various organisations, the Qatar Irish
Society was able to raise €9,000 for charity.
The main prize, two return tickets to Ireland,
sponsored by Kentz was presented by Martin
Walsh, Qatar Kentz Country Manager, to
Claire Bradley.

There were 210 people in attendance and the night was kicked
off with a cocktail reception at 7.30 pm. The entertainment was
especially flown in from Dublin for the event, beginning with
Phoenix, a 4-piece band that play traditional Irish music. Then
the crowd turned the attention to “On Your Toes”, a 7-member
dance group from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland.
Among the attendees were Andrey Igorevich Lobkin, the Mayor
of Yuzhno, his deputy Dmitriy Ivanovich Sangadeev and other
government officials.
Mary McGrath, Senior Group Recruitment Officer, travelled to
Yuzhno especially for the party. Just like last year she stuffed
her suitcase with everything green she could find. The
waitresses wore hats and other Irish adornments that matched
the elaborate décor with tricolour balloons, shamrocks, Irish
flags and garlands.
W
With the proceedings over, it was time to enjoy
the Irish band Celtic Flavour which had been
especially flown in for the evening. Great
music kept the guests dancing until the early
hours of Friday morning. Qatar Kentz would
like to thank the Irish Society, Cian Toomey
and his wife Michelle, Rosaleen Garvey and
Padraig Mulvey for all their hard efforts that
they put in to ensure the evening was a
success.
