February, 2013
February, 2013 Becky’s Bits and Bytes What a fun way to learn about decorated letters and the Book of Kells! Hope you all enjoyed our January movie program and checked out the Early Bird display of Celtic decorated letters. Thanks to the Reggie Student Study Group (RSSG) for the program. In February, Bonnie Houser and the Secret Pal committee will tell us all about this year’s project. As usual, they have something new and exciting planned to entice us to participate in this summer’s exchange. They have planned a hands on project in leather for everyone at our February meeting so be sure to be there. Check the short supply list in this newsletter. Whether you are able to participate in the summer exchange or not, you will be sure to enjoy this project. Reggie Ezell will present the initial class of his year long series at Discovery School on February 9-10. We are all excited to have Reggie here and thanks to the RSSG everyone is getting materials organized and making preparations. Besides what each student gains personally from these classes, the whole guild also gains from the Reggie alumni. They have done many workshops, programs and activities throughout the year which are available at a reasonable cost to all members. Jennifer Lavin and Deborah Bowen will present the February mini Flourished Capitals with a Pointed Pen in the Parish Hall on February 21. You won’t want to miss this presentation of these beautiful, graceful letters. See Maggie Gillikin to sign up for this workshop. The cost is only $5. Our second major workshop of the year Brush Lettering with Carl Rohrs will take place March 9-10 at the Discovery School. This is a unique opportunity for us to learn calligraphy with a brush from an internationally known calligrapher. The class was filling quickly at the January meeting but there will be a waiting list because spaces can become available. See Jill Adams about registering. Nominations for the Paul Freeman Award are due by the February general meeting. Forms were included in the January newsletter and will also be available at the February meeting. They can be given, mailed or e-mailed to Carlos Haun at 8006 Shadow Forest, San Antonio, TX 78239-3529. Take a few minutes to nominate a guild member who has contributed the most to benefit the guild this year. The nominee list will be published in the March newsletter and voting will take place at the April meeting. Awards will be presented at the May meeting. If you would like to make a Valentine Card to exchange, Sylvia Stanley will collect and distribute them at the February meeting - a chance to use what you learned at the January 17 mini workshop. Her carving was carved from original artwork by L Carter Holman. 2013 Paul Freeman Award Nominations…. It’s time to start thinking about those you think have made important contributions to the guild over the past year. A nomination form and more information are found further on in the newsletter. Contact Carlos Haun if you still have questions or to make your nominations. The deadline for turning in your nomination is the February general meeting. Brush Lettering with Carl Rohrs… Carl Rohrs will be with us in March to teach us about brush lettering. Not only will he be teaching the workshop, but he will be presenting his work and teaching us about brush lettering at the March general meeting. Even if you can’t make it to the workshop, be sure to come to the meeting to share in his wealth of knowledge and see his work. For information about registering for the weekend workshop, see Jill Adams. More information and a supply list will be in next month’s newsletter. Valentine Card Exchange… Sylvia Stanley will be collecting cards for the valentine card exchange at the February general meeting. Bring a handmade card to exchange in a random drawing. Children’s Valentines for the Battered Women’s Shelter… At the February meeting we’ll also be collecting store bought boxed valentines for the children at the battered women’s shelter to exchange with their classmates. It’s a small way to help these struggling kids feel just like the other kids in their class. A note from Kimberly Hartzog… We had a terrific collection of donations for the Battered Women's Shelter at our December meeting/pot luck. Thank you to all who donated. The staff was particularly excited about the gift cards for older children from GAP, Target and Old Navy as their age group is usually underserved. The Guild had voted to provide small turkeys, but after learning about December turkey supply & demand and many telephone calls to meat market managers, the Guild paid for and donated twelve (12) $10 HEB gift cards to the Battered Women's Shelter for use in their dry goods food baskets for transitioning families. These food baskets with gifts for the women and children were distributed at their Christmas party at Sunset Station on December 23rd. The donation station employees and volunteers recently implemented this party and its services because they recognized the hardship of going from a full service shelter to self-sufficiency as a single parent. Meanwhile, the week before Christmas, the shelter took in six more women and their children looking for refuge from their abusers...for whom the donation station also provided clothing and hygiene items upon arrival. Thank you for the continued support. Pictures from before… Enjoy these pictures from the January general meeting. We enjoyed the movie, Secret of Kells, and had a great display of all things Celtic.
