Message from the President
3
As I write this, my time as President of Regis Jesuit High School is rapidly winding
down. By the time you read this Fr. Paul Sheridan will be The Man. While he brings to
the job considerable leadership gifts, extensive experience, amazing energy and a fresh
eye, he does lack one advantage I had. As an alumnus and a two-time former teacher, I
had inside knowledge of what a wonderful community Regis Jesuit is. You will have to
teach that lesson to Fr. Paul; but he is a quick study, I am sure!
This issue of The Raider is heavy on the arts at RJHS. My brother Mark’s mural on
the history of the Jesuits in the arts makes that history appear to be one long, glorious
artistic flowering. Indeed, the beginnings were most promising. Jesuit architects and artists created churches of timeless
beauty; Jesuit musicians filled them with glorious music. As school after school was established, drama and dance were
employed to bring spiritual and moral lessons to life. Even in our dusty little ancestor of a school, Sacred Heart College in
Las Vegas, New Mexico, music was a part of the curriculum from the beginning.
But when the Society of Jesus was restored in 1814 after a 40-year suppression, the mantra was “back to basics”—and that
lasted far into the 20th century. There were no art classes when I was a student at “the old Regis.” Whatever music was
available was the product not of curricular commitment but of the talent and interest of a random Jesuit scholastic—Ralph
Renner in my time. Fr. Deeman managed to direct some amazing plays from his “Theatre 167”—and every drama director
in the history of the school before 2014 contended with woefully inadequate facilities. As a young Jesuit seeking permission
to go to art school, I was told by the priest in charge of my formation at the time, “Well, you know, we can only have so
much dessert after the meal!”
Well, dessert isn’t such a bad thing, and I am proud of the fact that we are able to offer our students a “balanced meal.”
Finally all have their place at the table: academics, athletics, activities, the arts, spirituality, service—and, of course, just
plain fun. While we will never be finished maintaining and improving the resources—physical and human—our students
need to become Men and Women with and for Others, this is a good place to stop, take a deep breath, and simply say
“Thank You” to God and to one another.
By listing every person and family who were a part of our FOUNDATIONS FOR EXCELLENCE Campaign, we express
our profound gratitude—but those columns of names also help us visualize and comprehend the breadth and depth of the
commitment of this community to our students and faculty. I wish I could have gotten to know every single person on
that list; but I am overwhelmed enough as it is by the graces that have been poured out upon me these past nine years. I
understand what John was feeling as he finished his Gospel: “There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these
were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.”
And so I leave you with my deepest gratitude and love. I cannot imagine a better assignment as a Jesuit. You have taught
me so much. I leave Regis Jesuit to begin a new adventure at Spring Hill College with so many good feelings (even my
sadness is “good”!) and with a very full heart. Thank you from the bottom of it!
In Christ,
Rev. Philip G. Steele, SJ ’66

During the 2014-15 school year, Regis Jesuit celebrated the Year of the Arts, coordinated by Sean
Powers, SJ and Tim Sauer ’06. Driven by student ideas, the Year of the Arts featured special
events and activities designed to celebrate the creative spirit in each of us, including advisement
activities, special concerts, performances and exhibitions throughout the year. “It [was] about
seeing art everywhere in our lives, similar to how Jesuits see God everywhere,” said John Brock ’15.
More than two dozen events figured into this special celebration, which was made possible by
the generosity of a Regis Jesuit benefactor.

The Steele Center Mural
W IT H R E P O R T IN G B Y M A S ON SCHEER ’ 1 5
It took eight months and hundreds of hours of labor, but the
mural on the second floor of The Steele Center (formerly
the Performing Arts Center & Student Commons – read
more about that on page 10) is complete and wondrous to
behold. Fr. Phil Steele, SJ ’66 commissioned his brother,
Mark, to create the piece, which depicts the history of the
Jesuits in the arts.
The mural, which measures nine feet in height and is
more than 40 feet long, posed more than a challenge just
because of its size. It is also hung on the convex curve of
the back wall of The Z Theatre. But it was a challenge that
Mark Steele, a trained painter and sculptor who works in
Cambridge, Mass., was excited to tackle. In fact, he added

a second curve to the vertical dimension of the piece as
well. “I was really happy it was curved. If it would have
been flat, there wouldn’t have been that element of drama
that I could weave into the painting,” Steele said.
The mural features all areas of the world where the
Jesuits have been missioned, starting with St. Ignatius’
Spain and ending with the United States and Regis Jesuit
High School. Steele constructed and painted the piece in
sections in his studio, completing seven panels at a time.
The finished mural is 27 panels total and features nearly 90
historic people and structures, including more than three
dozen that literally leap out of the mural as 3D sculptures.

The piece is also backlit around the frame and in the dome
of the Gesu, the mother church of the Society of Jesus in
Rome, at its center.
A brochure with detailed information about the mural is
available for those who come to see it. Visitors can also
use their mobile devices with an app called Blippar to learn
more about many of the individual figures and buildings
and its construction. Recent graduate Mason Scheer ’15
produced several videos about the mural for RJ Media over
the course of the last year. To watch these and learn more

Fr. Steele Bids Farewell to Regis Jesuit

“Gentle” is the word people use most often
when asked to describe Fr. Steele. “Artistic,”
“friendly,” “visionary” and “caring” are
also frequently heard. That is why when he
announced last June that the 2014-15 school
year would be his last, the community of
Regis Jesuit uttered a collective gasp of
shock and sadness. No one was quite ready
for our kind pastor to be moving on. Though
there is no set timeframe for presidencies
at Jesuit high schools, most currently last
around a decade, so with his nine years, Fr.
Steele is on track to be moving on despite
any wishes or pleas for him to stay.
Seemingly out of
character as a
serious senior in the
1966 yearbook
Uncommon in his quiet and reflective approach to leadership,
Fr. Steele brought a vision to Regis Jesuit grounded in nearly
50 years of experience with the school when he returned to
his alma mater as President in 2006. Artistic both in natural
inclination and by training paired with a superior intellect, he
sees situations in new ways that others often don’t and brought
that imagination to his work as President.
A Look to the Past
Philip Garrigan Steele was born in February 1948, the
eldest of the seven children of Philip J. and Marguerite
Steele. He grew up in northeast Denver, attending St. James
Parish School for primary school, followed by what was
then known as Regis for high school. In high school, he
was a standout student, earning an honors diploma and
participating in National Forensic League (what is more
commonly known as Speech & Debate) and Sodality
(spirituality and service) all four years— a good foundation
for the homilies and spiritual development that would soon
follow.
Inspired by teacher Michael Sheeran, SJ, who later became
President of Regis University and now serves as President
for the Association of Jesuit Colleges & Universities, Steele
entered the Society of Jesus soon after graduating. He also
hoped to pursue a strong desire to become an artist. His
father made his living initially as a commercial artist before
opening what is now the Rocky Mountain College of Art

and Design, so the younger Steele’s predisposition was
inherent. While pursuing studies to become a Jesuit, he
also earned a degree in art from the Tyler School of Art
at Temple University. Additionally he holds degrees from
Saint Louis University and The Jesuit School of Theology
in Berkeley, California.
Ordained in 1980, Fr. Steele spent the first 15 years of his
career as an art teacher and pastoral director, working at
St. Louis University High School and Regis Jesuit High
School. In the mid-90s while serving as Pastoral Director
at Regis Jesuit, he instituted the Kairos Retreat—the first of
the big impacts he would have on the school.
Following his time as RJ’s Pastoral Director, he served for
seven years as the Jesuit Provincial’s assistant in St. Louis.
Then he spent one year as Pastoral Director of Rockhurst
High School in Kansas City before returning to his
hometown to assume the role as President of Regis Jesuit.
President Present
Fast forward to this past February. Guy Gibbs ’47
Gymnasium was packed for Fr. Steele’s last time presiding
at an all-school Mass. Just days after suffering a minor
heart attack, the long-time Regis Jesuit leader offered a
moving message to the student body. “In being shown the
fragility of my life, I was also shown the preciousness of
it,” he said in his Ash Wednesday homily.
Steele says he wants to be remembered as “somebody
who held the community together.” Someone who
was “able to express who we are when we are at our
best.” Laughing, Steele adds, “Mainly, I’d like to be
remembered as a good priest.”
His priestly gifts were ever-evident, especially in his
homilies. His humanity and humor shone in rare form in the
homily he offered to the packed gym at his Farewell Mass
& Reception on May 3. He related what he calls his “best
story”—that of an ill-fated an ill-fated bus trip from Des
Moines to Denver back when he was a young Jesuit in which
he ended up finding “his peeps” in more ways than one—
once again reminding us that holiness is found in each of us.

Fr. Jeff Harrison, SJ, Superior of the Jesuit Community at
RJ, who has known Fr. Steele for about 40 years says of his
Jesuit brother and friend, “Fr. Steele is an excellent chef, so
we can always count on him for over-the-top special meals.
I’ll miss that about him.”
Fr. Steele’s focus has diverged from the more traditional
subject areas focused on in Ignatian education. “As an
artist he has a different style and a unique way of looking at
things,” Fr. Harrison said, which is what he brought to the
campus when he returned as President. During his tenure,
Fr. Steele oversaw the installation of three major art pieces
on campus. The Climbers of Regis Jesuit sculpture by Bill
Starke has graced the wall of the sophomore and senior
hallway of the Boys Division since 2009. Matt Dehaemer’s
colorful mural Regis Jesuit: Our History and Heritage has
been enlivening Boys Tradition Hall since the spring of
2010. Most recently, he oversaw the completion of the
massive and compelling History of the Jesuits in the Arts
mural by Mark Steele (his brother) on the second floor of
the PAC. [Read more about the mural on page 8.]
The Performing Arts Center & Student Commons remains
Fr. Steele’s favorite place on campus—the place where the
co-divisional model at its best is clearly evident. “There is
no way to think of Fr. Steele without seeing the PAC,” Fr.
Harrison says, “That will be his monument to Regis Jesuit.”
Fr. Steele reflects, “One of the most memorable days for
me was the ribbon cutting of the new building. When the
ribbon was cut, I remember all the students flowing like
water into the building. It seemed so natural and they were
so excited. Theatre kids were crying. It was really cool.” So
it is fitting that the Board of Trustees has chosen to rename
the building the Steele Center in his honor.
Getting his rock star on at Mom Prom! Fr. Steele readily
showed his fun spirit, especially for the students

On Saturday, April 25 the Plaza at The Denver Mart
hosted The 42nd Running of LARK: A Kentucky Derby
Experience. Courtesy of handymen Rod Card ‘61 and
current parent Thomas Swisher, this year’s nearly 800
guests were welcomed to an event faithful to the feel
of Churchill Downs. Guests dressed in seersucker suits
and oversized hats enjoyed mint juleps as they made
their way into the venue. The decorations duo of Patricia
Wambsganss and Terri Fangman outdid themselves yet
again, transforming The Denver Mart into a full Derby

And they’re off…
Out of the gates, the Silent Auction kicked off the night
with a bang. Guests munched on Derby-inspired fare
prepared by Kevin and Mary McNicholas’ Continental
“Divine” Catering while galloping throughout the venue
bidding on an amazing variety of items and opportunities
before sitting down to an even more sumptuous dinner.
CBS Channel 4’s intrepid Jim Benemann once again

Live Auction with good humor and, more importantly,
success! Bidding was lively for familiar favorites like the
feasts at the Jesuit Residence and new items like the 2015

The evening was further highlighted by the incredible
show of support for President Rev. Philip G. Steele, SJ ’66,
who enjoyed his ninth and final LARK as President. Fr.
Steele’s wish to leave a legacy for future generations
of Raiders was fulfilled through this year’s special
appeal. The crowd went wild raising a record-shattering
$465,000 for the Fr. Steele Hope-Challenge Scholarship,
which will specifically support the tuition expenses of
students who are accepted at Regis Jesuit from Boys

The iPad Program
The First Year in Retrospect
W IT H R E P O R T IN G B Y C O NN OR CHASE ’ 1 7 , RJ MEDIA
After a three-year preparation period—one for research
and two for piloting—Regis Jesuit’s 1:1 iPad Program was
rolled out to all students during the 2014-15 school year.
In preparation for the full program launch, all teachers
spent several days in training sessions designed to get them
ready for using iPads in class. During registration, students
brought their iPads and downloaded the necessary apps in
preparation for the start of school. Then everyone took a
deep breath, said a little prayer and dove in to this new era
of teaching and learning at Regis Jesuit.
Most teachers came up swimming with relative ease.
They viewed using iPads as just another way to impart
curriculum; one that offered opportunities to do so in new
and different ways. “[Teachers] need to see good pedagogy
as the foundation and refer to technology in its role as
enhancing the learning taking place from good pedagogical
principles,” says Jason Beyer, one of the Education
Technology Specialists (Ed Techs) who oversaw the
implementation of the program.
Bill Kehrman, a social studies teacher in the Boys Division,
used the iPad in class almost every day. “I think that there
are opportunities that I now have that I couldn’t have had
without technology,” he says, continuing, “Everyone is on
the same technical level. It gives me an opportunity to give
an assignment and allows students to be more creative with
some assignments.”
Girls Division science teacher Kimberly Haag reports a
similar expansion of teaching techniques. “Using iPads
allowed me to engage students in learning in a way I
couldn’t prior to their implementation. We used exoscopes
to enhance our lab experience with microscopes, allowing
us to see objects on the microscope projected onto the
iPad, take pictures, label and scale items. We also could do
labs outside and document with pictures, making a labeled
collage rather than drawing the pictures,” she says.
Teachers also found it useful for administrative tasks. “I
like the ease of handing in and grading papers on Canvas,”
an online learning management system with a robust app
that works well on the iPad, says Mary Muldoon Weis,
SUMMER 2015
THE RAIDER
GD theology teacher. Music teacher Karen Wuertz says,
“There were a lot of unique ways to use the iPads in
my music classes, which made everything a lot more
streamlined and efficient for us. For example, having
the Beginning Guitar book in iBooks with sound files
embedded was great for students to be able to hear how a
song is supposed to go and to play along with it. Using the
SmartMusic app enabled the orchestra students to complete
practice assignments in which they use the iPad to record
themselves playing and submit the recording directly to
me via my SmartMusic teacher account. In my content
area especially, the iPads just really made so many things
readily available, which increased efficiency for both me
and my students.”
Students also generally liked the streamlining of work
using apps on the iPad. As an athlete needing to manage
his time, Brian Hodes ’17 used Canvas and his iPad to
stay on top of his studies. “They allow for easier access to
PowerPoints and assignments, and it’s easier to make up
work,” Hodes said.
15
There were challenges
in implementing the
program as well, both
technologically and
from a standpoint of
class management.
“There are things we
are asking the iPad to do that it cannot.” Kehrman says,
like having students switch constantly when trying to take
notes in an online textbook. Wuertz states that “Many
students lack the self-control needed to resist off-task iPad
behavior.” To combat the latter issue, the firewall was
replaced at the end of the school year to one that would
allow for increased security and block access to sites
perceived to be of concern.
Beyer and fellow Ed Tech Will Cropper ’98 will continue
to work on providing increasingly advanced tech support
for teachers and exploring additional ways to support
student learning, understanding that it will be an everevolving process. But Beyer says that seeing teachers
utilize iPads creatively this first year is what excites and
inspires him most about the program and its continued
development. Watching “Joe Lagan using Padlet and
PollEverywhere for students to see the knowledge they’d
gained as a class” to witnessing “Jackie Maxfield, Syd
Timme and Jen Gray actually having students turn their
own ‘Lit into Film’ as the culmination of their academic
endeavor brought home the fact that one-to-one offers us
the chance to put students into the production role of their
education.” And we’ve only just begun.
Gaming outside of class, especially in the Boys Division,
created another concern. A significant number of students
were spending most free time staring at their screens rather
than engaging with each other. To mitigate this, much
of the Boys building became a game-free zone. Gaming
is now only permitted in the cafeteria and library during
free times during the school day. To further encourage
student interaction, Student Council worked with the
administration to get more ping-pong tables in common
areas, provide balls and Frisbees for use out on McNicholas
Green and to open the gym more often during lunch and
Academic Support. The spring saw many more students
outside enjoying fresh air and each other rather than sitting
silently shoulder-to-shoulder in windowless hallways
playing games.
Moving forward, both teachers and the administration will
take what was learned from this first year and grow from it.
Haag says that she will continue seeking how to use “iPads
in innovative and cognitive ways. Students appreciated the
opportunities to express their own thinking in creative and
original ways.” Muldoon Weis plans to “be much more
specific in when I use iPads. I will give [students] only a
certain time on the iPad.” She also plans on learning more
about different apps she can incorporate into her teaching.

WINTER SPORTS
GIRLS DIVISION
Cross Country
Lindsey Koch ’15 finished fourth and Julia Vitella ’17 finished
tenth at Regionals and the team qualified for State championships,
finishing 21st overall.
GIRLS DIVISION
Basketball
It was an up-and-down season for the Raiders, who were ousted
in the second round of the State tournament. West Point signee
Jess Lewis ’15 and TaeKenya Cleveland ’16 were named to the
All-City team.
Field Hockey
In the program’s fifth varsity season, the always competitive
Raiders fell to Denver East in the first round of the playoffs.
Rugby
It was a rebuilding year for the Raider ruggers who finished the
regular season with a 1-5 record under new Head Coach Dave
Gaston.
Softball
It was a tough year for the Raiders as they finished 5-14 overall.
However, they fielded a lot of young talent, which should bode well
for the future.
Volleyball
The Raiders finished the regular season smoking hot, winning 10
consecutive matches. After spiking their competition in Regionals,
the Raiders lost to eventual champion Grandview in the semifinals.
BOYS DIVISION
Cross Country
John O’Hagan ’15 finished second in Regionals and the team
finished 24th at State.
Football
After losing the home opener to Cherry Creek, the Raiders rattled
off eight straight victories and received a No.2 seed entering the
playoffs. After breezing through the first two rounds, the Raiders
looked to avenge their early-season loss in a quarterfinal matchup
against Creek, but unfortunately came up short.
Golf
The Raiders fell just short of their fifth straight State championship,
finishing second overall. It was a tremendous season with a lot of
new faces.
Soccer
A down year for the Raiders who finished the regular season with a
6-8-1 record.
Tennis
The Raiders won the Regional title and qualified all but their No. 1
singles player for State. A solid performance at State earned them a
fifth-place finish. Luca Abbott ’17 and Max Koszowski ’16 rallied
to win the No. 4 doubles championship. The team was selected as
the winner of the CHSAA Sportsmanship Award.
SUMMER 2015
THE RAIDER
Poms & Cheer
At the NDA Nationals competition in Orlando, the RJ Varsity
Poms advanced to the finals, placing 12th in Hip-Hop and 14th in
the Poms competition. The Regis Jesuit Varsity Cheerleading team
had another successful season, placing fourth at the Continental
League Championships and 13th in 5A All Girl State Cheerleading
Championships.
Swim & Dive
The Raiders’ bid for a third straight 5A state title fell just short.
McKensi Austin ’16 won a second consecutive diving title and
Kellyn Toole ’15 took fourth place. Coach Nick Frasersmith was
honored as 5A Swim Coach of the Year, and Kim Hagger was
recognized as Diving Coach of the Year.
BOYS DIVISION
Basketball
A spectacular regular season gave the Raiders a No. 1 seed
heading into the State tournament. The Raiders advanced to the
Great 8 where they fell 53-48 to Denver East.
Hockey
The Raiders finished the regular season 19-1-1and they advanced
to the Frozen Four for the eighth consecutive year. Although they
did fall short of a State title, the Raiders bounced back, winning
their second National title in four seasons.
Wrestling
Regis Jesuit qualified four wrestlers to the state tournament. Logan
Ronan ’15 placed fourth in the 152 lb. weight class for a second
straight season. The team finished tied for 23rd place at State.
STATE ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014-15

SPRING SPORTS
GIRLS DIVISION
Golf
The Raiders repeated as
State champions and did
so in dominating fashion,
giving Regis Jesuit its
only State team title for
the 2014-15 school year.
Sydney Gillespie ’15
finished second overall,
Mary Weinstein ’16 finished
seventh and Jaclyn Murray
’17 tied for ninth.
Lacrosse
After a mediocre regular
season, the Raiders entered
the State tournament as
a No. 16 seed looking to
upset perennial power
Cherry Creek. The Raiders
had Creek on the ropes in the first round but fell just short 13-11.
Midfielder Kathleen Roe ’16 was named Player of the Year for the
Continental League.
Soccer
A 6-5-4 regular season record warranted a No. 13 seed in the State
playoffs. The Raiders snuck past Mountain Range in the first round
but fell to Broomfield in the second of State tournament play.
Tennis
The Raiders finished the regular season 8-2 and had three players
qualify for the State tournament.
Track & Field
Newcomer Kylie Davis ’18 broke the school record in the 300 m
hurdles. She advanced to State where she finished seventh overall.
Kellyn Toole ’15 high-jumped her way to a fourth place finish at
State as well.
BOYS DIVISION
Baseball
After early season struggles, the Raiders peaked at the right time,
winning their district and advancing to the State playoffs. After
a first round win, the Raiders fell in heartbreaking fashion to
Mountain Vista 11-10. The double elimination format gave them
another shot, but they weren’t able to overcome an early deficit to
Grandview.
Lacrosse
After a terrific regular season, the Raiders found themselves back
in the State title game against Cherry Creek, who they upended
last year to clinch the championship. Unfortunately the Raiders
found themselves down early and were unable to fight their way
back, eventually losing to the Bruins 13-10.
19
Rugby
It was a season to remember for the Raiders, who went 12-3
overall. After taking down a tough Colorado Springs squad in
the state semifinals, the Raiders found themselves in a defensive
struggle against Denver East for the State title. The Raiders had a
chance to win on their last drive, but East held them at the goal line
for a 10-5 win.
Swim & Dive
Raiders won seven events at state, but couldn’t clinch another State
title, finishing as runner-up to Fossil Ridge. Quinlan Stuart ’16 won
State titles in the breaststroke and the 200 yard individual medley.
Kyle Goodwin ’15 capped off an incredible high school career,
winning his fourth consecutive State diving title. He was also
named XFINITY Sports Colorado Male Athlete of the Year.
Track & Field
A solid season for the Raiders, who finished 15th overall at the
State championships. Rayvon Solomon ’16 finished second in the
Triple Jump.
Volleyball
It was a tough season for the Raiders, who finished 2-13 overall
under new coach Juan Pantoja ’96.

Final Campaign Report
Success!
In Excess and with Gratitude
You did it! The largest capital campaign in the school’s history ended December 31, 2014 with gifts from our generous
donors raising a record $20,711,000, well over our goal. Thanks to you, our young, but rapidly growing endowment
will reach $13 million once all pledge commitments are paid, continuing to benefit faculty compensation and tuition
assistance for generations of future Raiders. We also have a beautiful new building that unites our community beyond all
imagination.
Congratulations and thank you for making us an even stronger Regis Jesuit community!
Over the past four years, more than 1400 families and individuals rallied together to make FOUNDATIONS FOR
EXCELLENCE a huge success and position Regis Jesuit High School for a promising future. In this report, we have listed
each donor who made this success possible. This was truly a community-wide effort and your generosity is inspiring!
We are here to serve you. If you have any questions regarding the campaign or would like to learn more about the
Advancement Office, please reach out to me or anyone on our team at any time. We would love to hear from you.
Thank you once more and have a wonderful summer.

The successful end of the FOUNDATIONS FOR
EXCELLENCE Campaign marked a milestone for Regis
Jesuit’s Master Plan, helping to complete Phase I, which
included increasing faculty salary and tuition assistance
endowments. The plan also included the construction of the
Performing Arts Center & Student Commons, now named
The Steele Center, which looks out over McNicholas Green
in the heart of campus.
In May 2010, The Steier Group, the firm contracted
to help run the campaign, presented the results of an
extensive feasibility study, which garnered the input of
several hundred members of the RJ community including
alumni, parents, faculty, students, parents of graduates
and other benefactors. The report showed strong support
of a campaign focused on building the endowment and
constructing a new facility focused on the performing
arts. With the encouraging report, the Board of Trustees
approved moving forward and the FOUNDATIONS FOR
EXCELLENCE Campaign officially began.

SUMMER 2015 F F E F I N A L R E P O R T
Under the leadership of Fr. Phil Steele, SJ ’66 and with
the guidance of the Advancement Office staff, Campaign
Committees were formed and began the work of raising the
gifts necessary to meet the $20 million goal.
By March 2013, $16 million had been raised, which
was enough to begin construction on the building. The
groundbreaking for the Steele Center took place on
what was then a grassy, rabbit-infested hill between the
Divisions. Just ten short months later at the end of January
2014, the ribbon was cut and classes began in the building
in the beginning of February.
The new Z Theatre, named for Mike ’74 and Nancy
Zoellner, saw the staging of the first student production in
March 2014. Life is a Dream was written by Pedro Calderón
de la Barca, a Spanish playwright and contemporary of St.
Ignatius who studied at the same university as Ignatius. To
Theatre Director Aldo Pantoja ’01, it seemed a fitting play
with which to open the new theatre.

The official Grand Opening took place at the end of April
2014. Fr. Steele dedicated and blessed the building in a
ceremony that also showcased the musical and theatrical
talent of our students and featured a special performance
by the world-renowned Cleo Parker Robinson Dance
Ensemble. Following the ceremony, campaign donors
enjoyed tours of the building and a sumptuous reception
while they marveled at the views of sunset over the
Rockies. Grand Opening Weekend continued the following
two days with master classes offered to students by actor
John Carroll Lynch ’81 and musicians Justin Lansing ’03
and Joe Mailander ’04, a.k.a. the Grammy-winning Okee
Dokee Brothers. The Okees also performed a family
concert as part of the weekend. A Student Showcase
featuring all musical groups along with actors and improv
comedians rounded out the weekend’s festivities and
brought people to their feet as they witnessed the first
glimpse of how wonderful the new space would be for the
performing arts at Regis Jesuit.
Following the grand opening, contributions continued to
come in and the original $20 million goal was surpassed
by several hundred thousand dollars before the campaign
officially ended in December 2014. The final total was an
impressive $20,711,000!
In the subsequent months, students and faculty have
enjoyed the benefits of this campaign a hundredfold.
Each day music, acting, theatre tech, college counseling,
journalism and fellowship thrive in the Steele Center. Regis
Jesuit’s future is more secure and brighter than ever due
to campaign contributions bolstering our endowment for
tuition assistance and faculty compensation. Thanks to
our truly generous community, the FOUNDATIONS FOR
EXCELLENCE Campaign is a blessing for all, now and
always!

Second Hand to First Class
Aldo Pantoja ’01, Theatre Director and Teacher
Having The Z Theatre on campus has been a game-changer
for me as a theatre director. Our old 100-seat black box
theatre was essentially cafeteria space until we converted it
into a performance area. Slowly the room started to become
a rehearsal hall, scene shop, classroom and even a dance
studio at some points in the semester. We had far outgrown our beloved old black box
and the Steele Center came right on time, as growing pains started to take their toll.
Now, our productions have never been bigger as we continue to push the limits and
see what this new theatre can do. Students now get hands-on experience with some of
the latest theatre technology and software that has become industry standard. Actors,
musicians and dancers prepare tirelessly in our rehearsal halls and practice rooms, so
they can perform to packed houses of hundreds. This next generation of performing arts
at Regis Jesuit will be like no other in school history. Come and be a part of it!

in Jesus Christ Superstar
The Steele Center allowed me to improve my skill sets in both acting and singing
immensely. Through the accessibility of the stage, practice rooms and supportive
faculty, I was able to explore the arts more deeply and openly.

Adam Dawkins ’98, RJ Media Advisor and Journalism Teacher
The energy, creativity, and opportunities in performing arts
and media made 2014-15 the most fulfilling and memorable
in my 12 years as a teacher. I’m lucky to be able to advise
RJ Media because I get at least a glimpse of every event,
performance and learning opportunity. I was truly amazed
by the dedication, passion and creativity I saw in my fellow
teachers and in the students. Talk about authentic learning –
it’s right here. What’s most exciting, perhaps, is that we have
barely scratched the surface of what’s possible.

The Top Ten Reasons the Steele Center Makes a Difference in My Life
By Bernie Sauer ’97, Girls Division Music Teacher
10. From having my percussion students stand on their tippy-toes in order to make room for the two rows of woodwind players in the old music trailer to having
room for four rows of instrumentalists, as well as an entire space devoted to
percussion, I’d say the Steele Center has made a positive impact on our music
ensemble programs!
9. I finally have an office! In the old “music mansion” (the trailer), the classroom
WAS my office.
8. Every morning, I get to see a spectacular view of the beautiful Rocky Mountains
before I head into class. I say a prayer of gratitude each time.
7. The acoustics in the vocal room resonate astoundingly! In the trailer, a note
would die in an instant as it got soaked up by the cheap ceiling tiles above us.
6. The Student Commons is a social hub, gathering students from both Divisions
for conversation, studying and coffee as if it were a central college campus
hangout!
5. We used to have to transport instruments and gear miles and miles to a theatre
rented for the musical. Now, we simply go down a hallway!
4. We have a real, professional PIT for the pit band!
3. I used to send students outside in the cold to run instrumental or vocal sectionals.
We have practice rooms for that now!
2. Performances on a big stage under the lights in front of 500 people is what it is
all about, people.
1. I get to work with the best people on earth, and now we have the proper
facilities for communicating, bonding and hearing beautiful music all at the
same time!

The Steele Center provides students with the opportunity to not only discover a
passion, but to develop it in an unrestricted fashion. I auditioned for my first musical
ever as a senior, partially because I saw the incredible commitment Regis Jesuit made
to the performing arts programs. I no longer felt like the school was putting the arts
behind everything else. I was a football player with a dream, and I felt like the Steele
Center gave me the best opportunity to make that dream a reality.

Array of Artists!
SUMMER ISSUE
2015
Alumni in the Arts
BY R . J . T U CH SCH E RE R ’ 0 1 , D IR E C T O R O F A LU MN I REL ATION S
My fine motor skills, or lack thereof, never allowed me to be
artistic in the traditional sense. And come to think of it I’m
not very artistic in the nontraditional sense either. The alumni
featured here, however, demonstrate a range of skills in a variety
of different art forms—from the small stage to Hollywood, from
traveling the world taking photos to playing post-apocalyptic
honky-tonk country music. They represent just a few of the
scores of Raider alums working in the arts. They took what
Regis Jesuit taught them and brought it to the next level. Let me
paint you a picture of what some of our alumni are doing in the
arts…
Hollywood Hyatt
Filmmaker Andrew Hyatt ’01 believes his storytelling was
shaped by his elementary school days of sneaking into the
basement late at night to watch marathons of The Twilight Zone
and his obsession with comic books and 80s adventure films.
Hyatt’s journey to filmmaking began at Loyola Marymount
University where he wrote, directed and produced a number
of award-winning shorts. He has written projects for a number
of high-profile producers including Graham King (Argo, The
Departed, The Aviator), Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (Transformers,
GI Joe), Steve McEveety (Passion of the Christ, Braveheart)
and XYZ Films (The Raid). He’s also been a collaborator on
creative material and crafted content for a variety of prominent
individuals including adventurer Bear Grylls, Archbishop
Charles Chaput of Philadelphia and Isaac Slade of The Fray.
Hyatt says, “I wonder if I’m alone in this or if it’s a common
feeling amongst alumni, but to a certain degree I think I took
RJHS for granted at the time I was there. I’m not sure I quite
understood the privilege of what I was able to be a part of as
those four years went by. It’s now only looking back after nearly
14 years (has it been that long?) that I can see the foundations
that hold me up in my daily life were nearly entirely set by the
academics and the community of RJHS.”
Hyatt’s latest passion is producing content that is deeply
personal, seeking to create material that delves deeper into the
drama of the human condition—exploring good and evil, truth
and beauty. Hyatt just finished post-production on Full of Grace,
a feature film that explores the final days of Mary of Nazareth.
He is currently writing a feature on the Apostle Paul for Outside
Da Box, a Chicago-based film company, and is also writing an
intimate father/daughter drama set against the backdrop of Christ
walking the earth. It is scheduled for production in fall 2015.
Hyatt (right) on set
“I knew at the time there was something different about being
part of RJHS; you could simply look around at other high
schools to see that clearly. From the involvement of parents
and alumni, to the care and dedication of the teachers, staff
and coaches, to the men I got to know over four years, there
was something tangibly different. I enjoyed most things about
it, but what it meant for my future self wasn’t very clear at all.
Most apparent to me now is just how much of my identity was
formed and rooted in those four years. There was a discipline
instilled in me, both through sports and academics. There was
a sense of pride and brotherhood that I didn’t know was so
uncommon. A self-belief that I could, in fact, achieve anything
I set out to do. My parents played a massive role, but it was
firmly imprinted in me at RJHS.”

The Disappearing Quarterback
Mike Boryla ’69 was a top high school prep quarterback,
took four years of Latin and only dated St. Mary’s girls during
the era when former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
was a student there. And wouldn’t you know it, Condi, now
a political science professor at Stanford University, Mike’s
college alma mater, used to shoot the breeze with the former
Prom King.
These days, Mike is starring in the one-man show, The
Disappearing Quarterback that tells the tale of walking away
from the sport and teammates he loved. The show, written by
the self-described, “long-haired hippie,” played at Denver’s
Bug Theater this past January and is scheduled to play the
Denver Performing Arts Center. It has received good reviews
from the Philadelphia Inquirer and Denver Post.
Boryla went on to big things at Stanford and then made it to
the NFL, quarterbacking for the Philadelphia Eagles from
1974-76. Then, well, he quit. Who cares about the million
dollar paychecks if you can’t remember where you are and
how you got there? Blanked with concussions, elbow draining
and surgeries, Boryla decided to…disappear.
The play includes nine stories about his days at Stanford. “I
was living in a van in Palo Alto in 1974 listening to Sugar
Magnolia by the Grateful Dead…” Boryla also shares more
than a dozen stories about his time with the Philadelphia
Eagles.

Skinner adding some flair to her vehicle
Horrigan, I mean Bib, specializes in guitar and also works
as a senior copywriter in Denver. Chris Johnston, a.k.a.
Buck, is a doctor who can be found running the ER at St.
Anthony’s Hospital, as well as the drum kit for the band.
Eric Johnston, the younger of the Rustys, is a case manager
at Catholic Charities Samaritan House and a case study
on how to shred on guitar. And Ty “Gonzo” Breuer is
the Director of Programs at the very successful Youth on
Record non-profit, as well as director of the pedal steel
guitar. The four came together, bought some western wear
and formed one of the best local shows Denver has to
offer. “All four of us being alums, there was a natural bond
besides just being musicians. We met [at RJ]; we’ve stayed
friends for over 15 years; and I think it shows in the way
we play together,” Chris says, “There are always alums in
our crowds which is a testament to the loyalty Regis Jesuit
instills in all of us.” Just don’t get caught in one of their lies.
Say Cheese!
Born into a family of adventurers, Rebecca,
“Becca” Skinner ’08 was raised in the Rocky
Mountains. After graduating from Regis Jesuit,
she set off to the high Laramie plains to attend the
University of Wyoming where she studied social
work, but retained a love wild spaces and exploring.
She remembers, “The education at RJHS was
important in my career because it encouraged me
to think outside of the box and encouraged lots of
engagement with community service. Specifically,
the Service Project opportunities during my senior
year helped shaped my decision to study social
work in college.”
Eventually, Skinner landed a grant from
National Geographic to photograph and study
communities in the aftermath of natural disasters,
including post-tsunami Sumatra, Indonesia. That
assignment sparked a 32,000 mile trip living out
of her car capturing all along the way. Skinner
has now settled in Bozeman, Mont. where she
works as a freelance photographer in both
conservation and the adventure industry.
Liar Country
Bib Tucker & the Liars Club is a post-apocalyptic
country band that’s dedicated to keeping the country
music tradition alive. If you’re wondering what postapocalyptic country is, you’re not alone. According
to band members Bib Tucker (Justin Horrigan ’01),
Buck Rusty (Chris Johnston ’01), Huck Rusty (Eric
Johnston ’05) and Gonzo (Ty Breuer ’01), it’s any
type of country they want it to be. After all, “we’re
the last darn country band on earth.” So expect every
brand of country music, including outlaw, spaghetti
western, standards, cowboy boots and bathing
suits, western swing, honkytonk, hick hop and even
ranchera at their shows.

The former Regis Jesuit soccer star returned to Major League Soccer this

Espinoza also played in the 2012 London Olympics and two World
Cups for his home country Honduras. Espinoza will rejoin Sporting
Kansas City who drafted him eleventh overall in 2008, when Roger
was just 20 years old. “I always knew I was going to come back; I just
didn’t know when. This is the league I started in and I wanted to come
back,” Espinoza said. Reflecting on his time playing soccer at Regis
Jesuit, Espinoza said it had a huge impact on his career. “Being in soccer
practice every day with my teammates and being in classrooms where
the teachers give you a great education sets you up for the future.” Read

Where Are They Now?
Ralph Taylor – Still Standing 50 Years Strong
B Y B E N S T E YA E R T ’ 1 6 , R J ME D IA
The day is early, and the weather reflects it. A
cool winter morning at Regis Jesuit High School
witnesses the arrival of Mr. Ralph Taylor, a teacher
who has seen it all in his 50 years at the school.
He steps out of his Mazda 3, takes note of the cool
breeze, enjoys it for a brief moment, then heads
inside, eager to start the week.
These days, Taylor co-teaches a highly-coveted American
Studies course, along with various junior and senior English
courses. However, since 1965 Taylor has taught a variety of
subjects including Latin and theology. “When you work at an
institution for as long as I have you begin to become a Jack-ofall-Trades,” he says.
Despite his many commitments to the educational program
at Regis Jesuit, Taylor has also been an integral part of the
Regis Jesuit athletics program. He has been the announcer for
home Regis Jesuit football and basketball games for the past
30 years. For a role he takes just as seriously as his teaching,
Taylor spends significant time before each game preparing for
his play-calling.
Taylor in the
1964 yearbook
There are plenty of reasons that explain why teachers devote
their livelihoods to the education of future generations, but for
Taylor it is seeing the students make the connections between
the knowledge they bring with them and the concepts that he
shares with them. Taylor believes that he learns just as much
as the students. “It teaches your own mind a lot; there are all
kinds of people with professions that haven’t read anything
outside of their professions,” Taylor says.
The discovery of the countless mysteries in the world of how
things work is the ultimate question Taylor aims to enlighten
his students about. “If I take a lead pencil and it has a lot of
carbon, some nitrogen and some other elements, what this
pencil can do is make marks on a surface. Now those same
elements, they are in you and me, but in you and me, that same
pencil can hope and dream and write poetry,” he says.

Taylor has been asked countless times why he still teaches
at Regis Jesuit he simply responds... “You always want to be
where you are.”
