HOW MEAL
PLANS WORK
Think of the NYUCard as an all access
pass to the University. Not only will it
allow students access to residence halls
and other buildings, but it is also loaded
with meal plan information, including
meal allowance and dining dollar balances.
MEAL ALLOWANCE
When students purchase a meal plan,
meals are loaded into their account. Each
time a student visits one of our residential
dining halls or uses a meal exchange at
one of our retail locations, a meal will be
deducted from this account. Only one
meal is deducted per swipe.
purchase of gift cards. Members may
purchase additional dining dollars in
blocks of $15, $20, $50 or $100 by
logging on to https://housing.nyu.edu/
MealPlans any time after the meal plan
cancellation/change deadline. Dining
dollars will be charged to your student
bursar account. Unused dining dollars
automatically roll over from the fall to
spring semester as long as the student
remains an active student meal plan
member. The new Flex Plus plans allow
you to purchase additional dining dollars
prior to the beginning of the semester.
MEAL EXCHANGES
The All Access plan gives students an
average of 26 meals per week. Meals
do not expire on a week to week basis.
However, any unused meals remaining
at the end of the semester will not carry
over to the following semester.
DINING DOLLARS
Dining dollars can be used at all oncampus dining locations. The NYUCard
works just like a debit card. Simply swipe
your card and the balance is automatically
deducted from your account. Dining
dollars have a dollar-for-dollar value,
so if you purchase a bottled soda for
$1.89, that amount will be deducted
from your account.
Dining Dollars cannot be used for the
Meal exchange allows students to eat
at our retail dining locations without
spending all of their dining dollars or
cash. At the Weinstein Food Court,
Sidestein Market, Peet’s Coffee & Tea,
Common’s Café, the Market Place at
the Kimmel Center, Palladium, Dunkin’
Donuts and Jasper Cafe there are
certain items that you may choose from
which consitute a “meal”. When you go
to pay, a meal will be deducted from
your meal account. If, for example, you
visit Weinstein Food Court, you will be
charged for a meal rather than dining
dollars or cash. If you also wanted a
bottled beverage for later, you would be
charged dining dollars or cash for those
extra items you selected.

on healthy eating, weight management
and vegetarianism contact the Health
Promotion Office at (212) 443-1234.
At Washington Square, Aramark’s
Healthy for Life is an easy-to-follow
nutrition information program. The goal
of the program is to point the way to
healthier lifestyles by highlighting
“better-for-you” menu selections. Look
for Just 4U icons on menus in residential
dining halls to help guide you to foods
that are vegan, vegetarian, low in calories
and low in fat. The program also identifies
foods that are organic and grown locally.
For more information, pick up a Healthy
for Life brochure from any residential
dining location.
VEGAN/ VEGETARIAN CHOICES
People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals (PETA) has rated NYU one of
the friendliest vegetarian campuses for
our vegan and vegetarian programs.
Our specially trained chefs create
delicious entrées using fresh vegetables,
legumes, and grains serving a wide
variety of vegetarian dishes everyday,
at every meal, in every dining location.
MADE WITHOUT GLUTEN ZONES
Find Made Without Gluten Zones in all
residential dining locations. We have
made a commitment to ensure there are
plenty of nondetected gluten options
available and have dedicated toasters,
cutting boards and cooking utensils
used in the preparation of made without
gluten foods.
Brooklyn offers pre-package Kosher
meals.
Washington Square offers Kosher meals
that are prepared under strict rabbinical
supervision and are KOF-K certified.
The Kosher Eatery accepts all meal plans.
HEALTHY FOR LIFE/EAT RIGHT LIVE
WELL
At Brooklyn, Lackmann Culinary
Services offers an Eat Right Live Well
program. The program encourages guests
to make small changes for lasting results.
Through Nutrition centers, monthly
newsletters, and our Under3 Program,
which offers grab ‘n’ go meals, snacks
and desserts under 300 calories,
we implement healthy eating in all
aspects of our operations. We look to
offer healthy, well balanced dining
options for every part of the day and
to customize our programs to fit the
needs of our customers.

IF I AM A FRESHMAN AND LIVE IN A
HALL WITH A KITCHEN, WHY AM I
REQUIRED TO BE ON THE MEAL PLAN?
A meal plan ensures that all freshman
students have access to at least one
nutritious meal a day during their first year
transition adapting to a busy schedule.
The dining program also promotes
community building and creates a great
first year experience.
ARE THERE EXCEPTIONS TO THE
FRESHMEN MANDATORY MEAL PLAN
POLICY?
The University does not make exceptions
to the mandatory meal plan policy
(including religious, dietary, scheduling,
medical and economic reasons). However,
in the event you believe you have an
extenuating circumstance, please contact
Ann Marie Powell, Director of Dining
Services, at annmarie.powell@nyu.edu or
(212)998-4279.
Residents of traditional-style halls
(Founders Hall, Brittany, Goddard,
Rubin and Weinstein) must maintain a
meal plan that includes a minimum of
225 Flex meal per semester. Freshmen

WHAT IF I HAVE SPECIAL DIETARY
NEEDS?
To discuss your special dietary needs,
contact Ann Marie Powell, Director of
Dining Services, at annmarie.powell@
nyu.edu or (212) 998–4279 to set up an

managers or executive chefs so that
your meal will be prepared according
to your request.
If you are seeking nutrition information
on healthy eating, weight management

Q
A
WHAT IF I HAVE A SEVERE MEDICAL
CONDITION OR DISABILITY AND
CAN’T USE THE MEAL PLAN?
If you have a severe medical condition
or disability that warrants an exception
to the mandatory meal plan policy,
you must submit a request for a reasonable
housing accommodation with supporting
documentation to the Moses Center
for Students with Disabilities. For
forms and additional information go
to www.nyu.edu/csd or contact the
Moses Center at (212)998-4980 or
mosescsd@nyu.edu.
IF I HAVE A SEVERE FOOD
ALLERGY, WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?
NYU Dining has a variety of meal plans
and dining options including kosher,
halal, vegetarian, vegan and made
without gluten items. Dining Services
will work with students who have food
allergies to develop a plan for dining
that accommodates their needs and
provide menus with a variety of food
selections. All meals are posted on the
dining website at www.nyudining.com
so students can make informed food
selections and avoid foods they are
allergic to.
Many items are prepared to order and
in full view to meet the student’s specific
request.
Warning signs are posted in the dining
halls and food courts reminding patrons
of possible cross-contamination during
food preparation and cautioning patrons
against cross-contamination with utensils,
containers, plates, and shared food.
Peanut butter products carrying nuts
will be isolated from other foods to the
extent reasonably possible and training
about food allergies is provided to the
dining staff. Please note that there are
limitations to the type of accommodations
that Dining Services can provide and
strict avoidance may be the only solution
to safeguard against food allergens.
Please contact Ann Marie Powell,
Director of Dining Services, at (212)9984279 or annmarie.powell@nyu.edu for
additional information or to set up an
appointment with one of our dining
managers or executive chefs.
HOW AM I CHARGED FOR MY MEAL
PLAN?
When a student signs up for or changes
a meal plan membership after the
beginning of a semester, the plan and
charges are prorated for the remainder
of that semester. Charges and refunds
for all meal plans (Flex plans and
Dining Dollars included) are calculated
on a daily basis. Weeks begin on
Sunday and end Saturday. Charges
begin on the activation date, not when
students begin using their plan. The
fall semester is 15 weeks and charges
begin on September 2, 2014. The spring
semester is 16 weeks and begins on
January 26, 2015.
For example:
If a student purchases a 300 Flex plan
that begins the second week of the fall
semester, they receive 14/15 of the plan,
or 280 meals and 140 Dining Dollars
(DD). They are charged 14/15 or 93%
of the original cost of the plan.
300 meals/ 15 weeks = 20 meals/week,
20 meals/week X 14 = 280 meals
$150 DD/15 weeks = $10 DD/week,
$10 DD per week X 14 weeks = $140 DD
The same principle applies for changes
and cancellations. The student pays for
the days they own the plan (whether
used or not) and receives a credit or
charge on their Bursar’s account based
on that change for the remaining days
of the semester.
COMMUNITY &
SPECIAL EVENTS
Food is the centerpiece for many
celebrations and group gatherings.
Dining is more than just eating, it’s
about sharing, gathering and connecting
to others. In the spirit of community
building, NYU Dining offers customers
daily, weekly and monthly opportunities
to partake in special meals, culinary
events and learning opportunities.

FESTIVE MEALS
Each dining location features a monthly
festive meal calendar to enliven students’
dining experiences. We kick off each
year with a “Welcome to New York”
festive meal featuring the diversity of
cuisines from the culinary capital of the
world. We also host theme events and
festive meals celebrating the holidays
throughout the year.
RESTAURANT NIGHT
Each month, we host two Restaurant
Nights at the Palladium Dining Hall.
Students can enjoy the pleasures of
dining in style with friends in a fine
restaurant embellished with candlelight,
waiters in tuxedos catering to their
needs, and music to complete the
ambience. Special menus prepared by
our executive chef feature locally grown
fare and trendy ethnic cuisine. Meal plan
members enjoy an appetizer, entrée,
a beverage and dessert of choice with
one swipe of their meal plan card.
SUNDAY BRUNCH EXTRAVAGANZA
Every Sunday, we serve an all-you-careto-eat “Sunday Brunch Extravaganza”
in the Palladium dining area. The brunch
features two buffets of fresh fruit,
pastries, bagels, salmon lox, and homemade desserts and pies. In addition,
we prepare made-to-order omelets
and traditional favorites like waffles,
eggs Benedict and a carving station;
treat your sweet tooth with a dip in our
chocolate fountain. It’s everything a
Sunday brunch should be and a great
deal for only one swipe of a meal plan
member’s card.
BROOKLYN DINING EXPERIENCE
Enjoy the culinary diversity that
Jasper Cafe has to offer. Students
can choose delicacies from our many
specialty stations such as Herb Kitchen,
Curry Kitchen and Koso Fresh Korean
Station. Diners can delight in a true
Brooklyn experience by attending our
most popular annual events: Late Night
Breakfast and Steak Night.
PASSPORT AT WEINSTEIN
Our culinary team has created authentic
ethnic foods and exotic flavors from
around the world. Weinstein Passport
will take students on a culinary journey
without leaving their seats, exploring
flavors found at NYU Study Abroad sites
around the world including Florence,
Ghana, Prague and many more.
DINING SURVEYS & FOCUS GROUPS
Your voice counts! NYU Dining is
enhanced and shaped by the suggestions
and input from our students. We understand students have unique needs and
want to provide the types of services
that work best with their lifestyles. Once
a semester, we conduct our DiningStyles
online survey for all meal plan members
and non-members participate in. This
survey lets our customers evaluate us
on a variety of criteria including, but not
limitied to price, service, food quality,
and food variety. As a thank you for
taking the survey, you will be entered
into a drawing and have a chance to
win some great prizes. Our new VOC
or Voice of the Consumer program,
solicits live-feedback from our customers.
You can scan a QR code at any of
our locations and take a short survey
about your most recent visit. It will
immediately notify the manager of that
location so that they can praise their
employees for a job well done or
correct any issues you may have
had with your visit
