President’s
Message
The leaves are almost all off the trees, there has been frost
on the cars in the morning and winter is just around the corner. But, my wood is all cut and stacked and the house will
be warm this winter for the Tibbies and the humans. We are
trying something new with a Board Meeting via conference
call later this month - hopefully this will work well and save
the TSCA Board members the cost of travel.
This is the LAST newsletter being done by Mary Novocin,
she has done an incredible job for TSCA and her talent will
be greatly missed. That said, we desperately need someone
to step up and become Editor. Please contact myself or another Board member for more information.
Andrea Struble is stepping down as the Breeder Referral
Chairperson. A temporary appointment has been made
until the position can be filled. Anyone interested as
Breeder Referral Chairperson, please contact any board
member.
Congratulations to the Orange Blossom Tibetan Spaniel Club
on becoming licensed to hold specialty shows, it’s been a
long road and it’s wonderful to have another regional club!
Herb Rosen is stepping down after many years of being the
TSCA Delegate to AKC. Thank you, Herb, for your dedication.
I am pleased to announce that the Board has voted Dianne
Tyree as our next delegate, pending AKC approval. Dianne
will keep the club informed of what is happening with AKC please contact Dianne with any concerns you might have.
The Show Committee is moving ahead for the 2015 National
in Virginia and I hope you have your reservations. More information should be out soon.
We need someone (or a group of people) to step up to host
the National in 2016, the bid we had was withdrawn. It really is not hard to do, please contact Dianne Tyree or Colleen Chaffee, National Specialty Coordinators, for more
information.
Happy Holidays to everyone.

A life that touches others goes on forever.....
Sandra Lidster
1940-2014
I knew Sandy through Phyllis Kohler, but I didn't become friends with her until, by
chance, we ended up traveling together to assist with the AKC's filming of the
Tibetan Spaniel Breed Video in New Jersey. She came by my house and then we
headed up to New Jersey. The first night together, Sandy fell asleep while I was
talking to her. The next morning she asked me, with a laugh, “Did I fall asleep on
you?”
She had brought several dogs for the filming, and asked that we not use Ch. Tsand
Woo Tong. When we were filming, they wanted a Tibbie other than a blonde one,
and being that he was a beautifully marked boy, I asked her if we could use him.
Sandy didn't think we should, but finally agreed. In the end, he was great and
turned out to be a good decision.
Over the years, Sandy served on many committees and offices, from President to Judges Education. No matter what
the position, she got the job done. She judged the National Specialty, along with winning it with her Ch Ambrier's This
Buds For You ROMX. He was a son of Ch Tsand Woo Tong.
Sandy will be missed, and this year's National Specialty will be dedicated to her memory.
Mallory Cosby Driskill (Ambrier Tibetan Spaniels)
Terry Jones
1956-2013
I first met Terry after she acquired her first Tibetan Spaniel in 2007. We quickly became
friends. Her first Tibetan was Samba, who she is pictured with, and they were great
friends. Terry bred Samba twice and got her two champions Krump, which her daughter
and husband still have, and Lindy, who lives with me. Lindy sat with Terry thehe hosp tal a
few days before she died, that visit was such a comfort to her. Terry so wanted to see
Lindy's puppies born before she left this world, but sadly it did not happen.
Terry loved this breed. She was always looking for Tibetan Spaniel items to donate to the
club for the auction. She went with me to the Briard Nationals in Canada and managed to
come back with several Tibetan items for the TSCA auction.
Terry was a wonderful woman with a big heart. Even as she lay in the hospital, just a day
before she passed away, she was more concerned about my toothache than herself and
she called her dentist friend in Chicago and made me leave her to go get it fixed. I will
always remember Terry, she was a great lady and wonderful Tibbie owner.
Christy Collins (Improv Tibetan Spaniels)
Helen Richards
1948-2014
Helen was born Sept. 20, 1948 in Queens, New York and passed away August 1,
2014 in Temple, Texas.
Helen is survived by her husband Harold Richards of Moody, son Darryl Richards
and his wife Angel of Kerrvillle; daughter Nicole Davis of Plano, daughter Monica
Richards of Killeen, and son Harold Weyland Richards of Hewett. She is also survived by eight grandchildren.
Helen married the love of her life, Harold Richards, April 8, 1966 in New Port
Richey, Florida. She was a homemaker and took great pride in raising and showing
her beloved show dogs.
To: Members of the Tibetan Spaniel Club of America
Our appreciation to you for the donations
that helped our club get a
Pet Disaster Trailer
for Calvert County, Maryland.
Dr. Joyce Dandridge, Delegate
Letter from Capital Dog Training Club of Washington, DC:
Capital Dog Training Club would like to thank you for helping us get a Pet Disaster Trailer for Calvert
County, MD. The presentation was yesterday, Saturday, September 13th and a big success. The clubs were
recognized for their generosity by the County Sheriff and the Director of Animal Control.
Calvert County is not a wealthy county and is surrounded on three sides by water; the Chesapeake Bay
and the Patuxant River. Thus, they often get threats of hurricanes and tornadoes I was told yesterday, there
is only one motel, a Super 8, that accept people with dogs. So, the need is great. It was wonderful to see
how excited they were to receive all the supplies. They just couldn’t believe someone would help them like
this.
I am enclosing a picture of your logo on the trailer. It is very nice. I will also email some photos to your
Delegate.
Sincerely,
Dr. Joyce Dandridge, Delegate, Capital Dog Training Club of Washington, DC.

PRESIDENT: Bill Chaffee thanked everyone for helping to make the teleconference a success. This will most likely
be tried again. The 2014 specialty is in the past and the committee is working hard on the 2015 National in
Fishersville, VA in June, 2015.

REPORT OF OFFICERS
Board Meeting Minutes Continued
Regional Club Coordinator: Congratulations to the Orange Blossom Tibetan Spaniel Club of Florida. They are now recognized by AKC and are able to hold Specialties. We are looking forward their first one.
Rescue: No Report.
Show Records: Cindie Swaim - No Report.
Specialty Coordinators: Colleen Chaffee & Dianne Tyree - 2015 committees are getting things together. 2016-interest in
holding one in Topeka Kansas along with 3 all breed shows. (See New Business)
Sunshine: Michelle Bustamante - No Report.
Board Meeting Minutes
Versatility: Karen Shilliday (See Unfinished Business)
Ways & Means: Dianne Tyree - The auction at the 2014 National was a huge success, bringing in approximately $2300.00.
Dianne is looking for a special item to be raffled off in conjunction with the 2015 National. The online auction just before
the 2014 National was not as successful as hoped.
AKC Delegate: Herb Rosen - See attached report.
Newsletter: Mary Novocin - See attached report.
Yearbook: This position is vacant. Some discussion about possible ways to make it easier and/or less expensive or possibly
having it put in the Newsletter as a removable page for members to keep themselves. This could possibly have more members involved. This idea was tabled until a new Newsletter Editor is in place.
Membership: Connie Buckland - See new members.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Constitution and By Laws: Dianne Tyree - Dianne will be making the corrections that AKC is requesting. Once we receive
AKC final approval, we will be presenting them to the TSCA membership.
Standing Rules: Dianne Tyree-these are almost ready to be presented to the Board. We will review for any changes. Once
completed they will be voted upon.
Illustrated Standard: Still working on getting photos and drawings.
Updating Logo: Mary Novocin is going to get together with the artist that did the logo for the Potomac Valley Club. She
will present these to the board.
National Judges Selection: There was a lengthy discussion on this subject. One possibility is to poll the membership to have
each member submit 5 judges they would like to see judge. The top 30 judges from that list would then be submitted to the
membership for a vote. These would be for the 2018/2019 specialties. Susan Mullins made a motion, Robert Churchey 2nd,
to have the members at the 2015 General Membership meeting submit their top 5 judges that have not judged a specialty in
the past 7 years, that they would like to see judge the 2018/2019 Nationals. Motion passed. Club counts would do the tabulations. This will also be in the Newsletter.
The Board held discussions on the following items:
Top 20 Competition: Colleen Chaffee will contact other clubs to see how they have handled this. There are concerns about
how well the membership would support it. It is a formal affair. This was tabled until next meeting.
Show Dog Hall of Fame parent club title. DianneTyree & Karen Shilliday - Report attached. Some discussion took place
regarding qualifications, retroactivity and submission of information. Karen Shilliday will be working on the Obedience/
Rally/Agility/Tracking requirements. Dianne will make some revisions that were discussed and present it again at the
spring meeting
Possibility of making changes to requirements of becoming a TSCA judges mentor were discussed, but was tabled until a
copy of the requirements is received by Linda Foiles.
Nominating Committee: Connie Buckland Chair, Will Chaffee & Meg Shepherd committee members. Alternates are: Janet
Habiger & Mickey Maynard.
NEW BUSINESS:
Judy Hardt made a suggestion for the newsletter that we go back through all the previous Specialty winners and use them as a
cover until all have been featured. Judy was informed that the only time a dog will be featured on the front cover would be the
Best Of Breed winner of the most recent Specialty.
Discussion took place as to the possibility of having umbrellas as a fund raiser for the club. Dianne is going to check for prices, colors & sizes.
Discussion took place for possibly having a Breeder/Owner trophy in memory of Sandi Lidster. The perpetual trophy would
be for Owner/Handled Best of Breed at the National Specialty show in Sandi•s honor. Robert Churchey made a motion to
proceed with this with funding from the membership and the TSCA matching the donations. Mary Novocin seconded. Motion Passed. This will be effective for the 2015 National.
Executive Session: at 6:36 p.m. • 7:10 p.m.
The following applicants were voted into membership pending publication in the Newsletter:

or a replacement before that date.

3rd, AKC had requested that I send them information on our Rescue program and the name of our Rescue Chair. I had
to inform AKC that at this time the TSCA doesn't have a Rescue Chair, therefore we are unable to do any rescues under
the of TSCA, Inc. name. Is there anyone in this club who is interested in volunteering to be the
Rescue Chair? If so, please contact any TSCA Board member. There are benefits to joining the AKC Rescue list.
4th, AKC has received and approved the request from the Orange Blossom Tibetan Spaniel Club (Florida) for holding
licensed championship point events. For more information on this club you may contact the club's President, Diane
Nachman at ridina2@aol.com.
5th, The Potomac Valley Tibetan Spaniel Club was founded in 1997 and has recently been reactivated with their goal to
become an official regional club of the TSCA. If you are interested in becoming a member you may contact Harold
Hartman at hbhartman@aol.com and/or visit their website at pvtsc.org
6th, Torie Marks and her committee has accepted the responsibility of putting together the TSCA “Meet The Breed
Booth” at Eukanuba again this year. They did a wonderful job last year and are looking forward to this event. The TSCA,
Inc. will once again be giving Conformation Medallions.
7th, The Westminster Kennel Club has moved the date of the Garden to February 16-17 for 2015. The “Meet The Breed”
event will be held Feb. 14, 2015 at Pier 92 during Westminster KC's Master Agility Championship. Jean Briggs has
volunteered to head up our booth this year.
Keep an eye out for AKC's new Complete Dog Book, which AKC hopes to have out before the end of this year. This
edition will contain several pictures of each breed. A little more in depth than what they've done in the past. This has
been in the working for over two years and the last that I heard from AKC was part of it was at the publishers.

I have had several offers to help with the newsletter in areas of proofing but no one has stepped forward to act as
main editor. I've appealed through the yahoo group as well as in the newsletter. I'm not sure where to go from here.
I really need to step down, at least for a little while, and I am willing to help out with ads and other areas that may be
needed. If anyone is willing to be the Editor please contact the board.
Advertising has been slowing down and I would like to see more ads to help with the cost of printing and postage. Please

Breeder Referral
November 1, 2014
Since my last report in May, 2014 I have received 25 enquiries from potential Tibbie owners living in 17 states: California, Florida (2),
Illinois, Maryland (2), Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio (2), Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington State, Wisconsin, and two from Canada.
As of November 1, there are 113 available Tibbies in the database, from new litters of puppies, to adults of varying ages.
The listings represent 36 different breeders around the country. Twelve other breeders are now in the “No Dogs Currently Available”
category but were previously listed with available Tibbies.
Based on what enquirers were searching for (age, gender, geographical location, willingness to travel, etc.), I have provided 82 referrals
since January 1st of this year (43 of those since May 1).
A handful of those who enquired (perhaps half a dozen) were just seeking information on the breed and resources for learning more.
The 2015 Directory is “under construction” as they say. The application deadline is November 15 (with some “wiggle room” after that
date).
As always, breeders not listed in the Directory may list a Tibbie with Breeder Referral for $5 (covers an entire litter or any individual
Tibbie).
Respectfully submitted,
Andrea Struble

Questions & Answers
with Dr. Austin Donner
Owner of Four Paws Mobile Veterinary Service
based in Mount Airy, Maryland
1. What sort of equipment do mobile vets generally have
in their vehicle, and a related question, what kinds of
emergencies are they equipped to handle?
Mobile practices can vary greatly. Some veterinarians operate
with very little equipment and focus on either healthy-pet
checkups or at-home euthanasia. Other vets purchase customized trucks or vans -- similar to recreational vehicles -- that
can be configured for many different purposes. I have a
Laboit truck that is basically a hospital on wheels. I opted to
have most of the equipment I would have in a traditional
brick-and-mortar hospital, including digital radiography (xray), an ultrasound machine, a basic laboratory, a surgical
suite, and dental equipment.
A veterinarian who works out of their personal vehicle can
still do preventive care and internal medicine cases, but they
are not going to perform surgery in your home. Some of these
veterinarians who do not have a specialty vehicle but still
wish to perform their own surgeries may lease space from a
traditional hospital to allow for this. Alternatively, they may
choose to refer clients to another veterinarian at a traditional
hospital for procedures like radiography (x-ray), surgery and
dentistry.
Emergencies can be trickier. I functionally have a complete
veterinary hospital in my truck and have worked in dedicated
emergency practice for six or seven years. Saying that, I
would refer more critical, life threatening cases to a dedicated
ER unless I was immediately available and in the area. Being
mobile, I don't know if I am going to be one minute or one
hour away from an emergency. For example, it wouldn’t be
a problem to stitch a planned, simple laceration on any given
day. Alternatively, if your dog was in critical condition after
being hit by a car and I wasn’t immediately available, I would
never recommend a client wait for me to arrive.
2. Does your vehicle come supplied as a mobile vet unit,
or did you have to modify a vehicle and assemble the
supplies and equipment yourself?
One has the choice to buy a customized vehicle from a commercial company or to customize a vehicle of their choosing.
If you are very handy, I would guess that customizing your
own vehicle would be more cost effective, but the vast majority of housecall veterinarians with mobile hospitals purchase commercial vehicles. Laboit and Dodgen are
historically the main producers of these vehicles, but there
are many newer companies that have emerged as demand for
mobile veterinarians expands. Companies, like Laboit, that
make mobile veterinary hospitals may also make other specialized vehicles for human doctors, dentists, and law enforcement groups.
Dr. Donner’s Mobile Unit
The truck comes with a basic setup including cabinets, counters and
exam tables, lighting, and a sink. Each company has standard floor
designs and models, but some modifications can be incorporated
during construction before delivery. My truck has two compartments. The first is a larger multi-purpose area that I use for exams,
laboratory work and digital radiography (x-ray). The second compartment is a smaller area that is a dedicated surgery suite with a
counter, hydraulic surgery table, and surgery light. A wall with a
sliding door separates the two spaces. I have an anesthesia machine
that swings between both compartments so I can perform simpler
procedures in the larger exam area that don’t require the strict
sterility of more involved surgeries.
3. What is the nature of the majority of your calls? Are many of
your clients disabled or elderly?
When I started the business, I assumed that a large portion of my
work would be home euthanasia and that many clients might have
mobility concerns. I also assumed a large part of my patients would
be cats. My initial assumptions were incorrect.
Though I do perform home euthanasia regularly, the majority of my
clients are just looking for a good regular veterinarian regardless of
where that service is performed. Except for being unable to offer
long term hospitalization, we run a full service hospital offering
everything a traditional veterinarian offers to clients. I do have a few
disabled or elderly clients, but the majority of my clients have no
mobility issues. The fact I come to their house is an added convenience that no one ever complains about. Finally, only about 25% of
my patients are cats.
4. What routine services do you offer?
I offer the same service you get at any traditional brick-and-mortar
hospital. We perform standard preventive care, such as vaccinations
and annual lab testing, that every hospital performs. We perform
most surgeries a general veterinarian can. We routinely perform
spays, neuters, and dentistry, but have also performed ACL repairs,
splenectomies, and amputations, on occasion. We have digital x-ray
and an ultrasound unit for additional imaging modalities. We have a
complete dental unit and routinely perform complicated extractions.
The truck carries a full pharmacy for medical needs in addition to
other instruments for the measurement of blood pressure and eye
pressure.
5. What is the radius of your service area? Is that typical of
most mobile vets? Do you maintain one vehicle, or have partner
vets who also have vehicles?
My service area is not a perfect circle from a given point. I have
only a few clients who live more than 30 miles from my home base.
I generally like to stay 15 miles or less when possible to maximize
the numbers of cases we can see on a given day. Also, there are
some areas I avoid due to traffic congestion or coverage by
existing housecall practices. Our business has only one veterinarian (myself). I know of a couple of housecall practices with more
than one veterinarian but I don’t know if I would ever expand, as
one truck is more than enough work for me
6. Are costs much different than having to take your pet to an
office?
I cannot speak for every mobile practice as there is a lot of
variability (even among traditional non-mobile practices), but I
perceive our prices to be the same if not better than many other
practices whether traditional or mobile in nature.
7. Generally, do mobile vets work traditional office hours, or
are they also available “after hours” for emergencies.
I would say most mobile veterinarians work standard weekday
hours. I know of some that do no after hours work and others that
do. I try to keep my office hours Monday through Friday from
8am to 5pm.
When cases and
clients
require
something outside
of these regular
hours, I accommodate them where I
can. After hours
emergencies are
typically reserved
for established clients. I am not alExamination area inside a mobile vet unit
ways available on
nights or weekends but will see cases when I have the availability. Even if my
patients end up being referred to an ER after hours, I do my best
to see them the same day when issues arise. This is another reason
I limit my travel radius. If I am in a smaller geographic area, it is
easier to fit in emergencies and urgent cases when they develop.
8. What sorts of animals do you see regularly?
The majority of my patients are dogs and cats. I see the occasional
ferret as well, but do not see other exotics, birds, or pocket pets. I
was required to chose a “track” in vet school at the start of my
second year and I elected small animal medicine. At my vet
school, small animal medicine essentially meant cat and dog
medicine
10. Do you travel in the vehicle alone, or employ an assistant?
I employ one assistant who is with me on most days/cases.
Outside of surgery, I can do many things by myself but always
welcome the help of a good veterinary nurse. Aside from helping
with animal handling, my assistant definitely streamlines the
handling of the day's caseload and provides a wealth of knowledge for clients.
.
ABOUT THE DOCTOR
Dr. Austin Donner is a 2004 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary
Medicine. He has practiced in both
general and emergency medicine in
Virginia, Texas, and Maryland. Although he enjoyed working in
emergency medicine, he missed the
relationships and familiarity that
develop with patients and clients in general practice. Dr.
Donner’s current practice, Four Paws Mobile Vet Service,
allows him to maintain a regular veterinary clientele. His
professional interests include, but are not limited to, surgery,
ultrasound, the management of feline chronic renal failure,
and preventive health care.
11. A more personal question--what made you decide to
“go mobile” instead of working from an office or animal
hospital? Do you find that you enjoy this mode of veterinary practice?
When I started the business, I had no personal experience with
mobile veterinary medicine and did not know another housecall veterinarian. I knew that I wanted to transition back to
general practice from emergency medicine and that I wanted
to work for myself. I had initially planned on opening a small
clinic in a shopping center as a standalone location. In addition
to the expense involved, I was having a hard time finding a
location that was receptive to adding a veterinary hospital. The
truck allowed me to start something sooner and cheaper than
the development of a brick-and-mortar practice. I find I really
enjoy mobile practice. I do not see anywhere near the number
of patients I could fit into a traditional practice, but I think I
am much closer with my clients. Though my “productivity”
and volume is lower, my costs are also held lower so everything basically evens out in the end.
12. Do you primarily treat the animals inside your vehicle,
or in the pet owner’s home?
We commonly go into homes, but the majority of cases are
seen in the truck. I find that the truck is neutral ground for
many animals so there is potentially less territoriality, less
digging cats out from under beds, and better lighting when we
examine patients. Also, all of our equipment is in the truck
making the exam (and therefore potential patient stress) much
shorter by not having to go back a forth for something not
brought into a house initially.
Even though we prefer patients to come out to out vehicle,
there is the added benefit of being at patients’ homes. For
example, if a cat is having urinary accidents in the house,
being able to see their environment may allow us to make
better treatments and suggestions to owners for getting things
back on track faster.

REMEMBERING ‘ZIMA’
By Mallory Cosby Driskill
Ambrier Tibetan Spaniels
There are so many special memories of Zima (BISS,BIS CH Ambrier Boda
Zelicious Zima, ROMX) from winning Best in Show at the Baltimore
Kennel Club to Best of Breed at the 1997 National.
Foundations
In her senior years, Zima went on to win Best Veteran at numerous
TSCA National Specialties and Supported Entry Veterans, not to mention Best in Veteran Sweepstakes. Shown
in the Veteran class at the 2005 National Specialty in New Mexico, she gave her son ‘Zeke’ a run for the BOB at
the supported entry, and in the end, went Best of Opposite Sex to him.
It was at the National in New Mexico that I decided to have a pet psychic “talk” to Zima to understand her love of
running off. The psychic told me that Zima told her she ran because it was fun!
Zima was raised by her co-breeder, Shirley Howard. When I heard of a little red girl, I told Shirley she was to be
mine. She arrived at the Lynchburg airport and promptly started ruling my life and that of my family. Her favorite
thing was to run around the house outside, circling us many times. I guess I should have known then there’d be
trouble ahead.
This summer I had dinner with Ernesto Lara and Pat Sarles.
Ernesto told his favorite Zima escape stories. One time she
got on the roof of the Greens’ kennel. Beth Sweigert had to
climb on the roof to get her down.
Another time Ernesto and Andrew Green were in the back
yard of a big estate they were visiting. Andrew was holding
Zima and, not thinking, he set her down. Off she went! There
they were chasing her all over this beautiful estate. This
summer her son Zeke decided to follow in her footsteps by
taking off not just once, but twice at the Salem, Virginia
shows, with Ernesto in hot pursuit.
To me, show wins are great but the biggest thrill comes when
a Tibbie can pass on greatness to their offspring. Though
remembered for her show wins and her love of running, I am most proud of Zima’s children and grandchildren. They
include Group winners, winners at the National Specialty, Number One All-Breed winners, and Best of Breed and
Best of Opposite Sex winners at Westminster and Eukanuba.
Zima and Zeke
I can see the same spark in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren… the sneeze on the down and back,
the coat, the attitude. They all shattered Tibetan Spaniel show records. I know Zima would have approved.
There are special places in my heart that Zima will always be. Her love of chasing the lizards that snuck into the
house, her climbing up on the windows, her recovering from serious surgery, from being found after running off for
two weeks, to making my husband Blake do as she wanted, and loving my kids.
I miss her so.
Thank You Sandy Lidster,
You will be forever missed!

Tibbies as Therapy Dogs
Providing Animal Assisted Therapy
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a goal-directed intervention in which an animal is an integral part of the treatment
process. AAT is directed and/or delivered and documented by
a health/human service professional with a specific clinical
goal in mind. Studies have shown AAT provides positive
physiological effects (e.g. decreased heart rate and blood
pressure), mental stimulation (e.g. recall memories), feelings
of acceptance and good rapport, outward focus, opportunities
for empathy and nurturing, increased motivation and entertainment and socialization for patients.
Visiting animal-handler teams are the most common source
of therapy animals that participate in AAT. These teams
travel from their homes to facilities for durations usually lasting one to no longer than two hours. Residential animals that
live at a facility can also be therapy animals. Considerations
of expenses and the animals’ health and enjoyment are given
significant attention in these cases.
Tibbies As Therapy Dogs
I have two Tibetan Spaniels, Kyi and Tia, that I acquired
from Li and Greg Craven (Tamzil). Over the past four years
Kyi, joined by Tia two years ago, have provided muchneeded comfort, support and pleasure to hundreds of people,
visiting hospitals, pediatric dentist offices, hospice homes,
schools and libraries.
To become a therapy dog team, I affiliated myself with Pet
Partners, the most respected organization providing training
and registration of therapy animals. Pet Partners is an international non-profit organization founded in 1977. Pet Partners
is the leader in the Human-Animal Health Connection that
emphasizes standards-based AAT programs, registers all
types of domestic animals in addition to dogs, trains healthcare professionals in animal-assisted therapy
techniques, and provides important resources and ongoing support.
Training includes a standards-based program for the
volunteers and animals. Standardized training prepares
handlers with practical knowledge of infection control
and prevention of zoonotic diseases (i.e. infections
transmitted from animals to humans). The standardized
training teaches practical ways to prevent and respond
to possible risks, accidents or unusual occurrences. Additionally, Pet Partner Teams undergo health screening
of the animal, and finally an evaluation of Handler and
Animal Team performance.
Therapy Dog Activities for Kyi and Tia
Patient Visitation Therapy - Kyi has provided comfort
to many people undergoing chemotherapy and dialysis
treatment. Being able to hold and pet Kyi during these
procedures has helped them endure their physical challenges. In one
case a patient
fighting cancer
had to be
moved to a
hospice house
for her final
days. While
being surrounded by her
family with
little time left,
she requested a
final visit from
Kyi. Special
arrangements
were made for
Kyi and myself to visit her one last time. Tears came to her eyes as
she saw Kyi for the last time and passed away shortly
afterwards. The family was grateful Kyi was able to
make her last moments peaceful.
Pediatric Dental Office - Kyi and Tia both provide
support for children undergoing dental procedures. A
blanket is
placed on
the legs and
stomach of
the patient
for the Tibbies to lie
on while
the children
pet them
and have
them close for support.
Once a
month, Adventure
Dental calls
on the Tibbies’ therapy dog
skills as a
“doggy
dental assistant.” This spring, a mother of two young
girls made an appointment for her daughters Bess, age
6, and Ayla, age 3. Bess and Ayla had never been to
this dentist before. When their mother learned after an
initial exam at another dental office that both would
need fillings as well as sealants, to help prevent future
cavities, she voiced her worries about how they’d fare
during the procedures with the new dental team. That's
when she heard that she could enlist a therapy dog for
help!
“I knew if there was going to be any apprehension it
would be totally erased with having the dog there,”
Mom said. She showed Kyi's trading card to her
daughters and they were very excited. “Wow! Like going to the candy store,” she recalls.
“Ayla told me later that she was about to cry at that time.”
Instead, the loving response of this wonderful therapy dog
checked the child’s
tears and afterward,
the human members
of the dental team told
her awestruck mom
that their patients
hardly ever stay as
still as Ayla and Bess
did that day. “Using
Pet Partners is great!”,
said one of the dentists. “We wish we
had a therapy dog in
the office all the
time.”
Six weeks after receiving sealants and
fillings under Kyi’s
caring gaze, Bess and Ayla can’t wait to go to the dentist
again. “Now when we drive by the dentist office, they always ask if they can go visit,” their mother tells me with a
laugh. She is so thankful the Tibbies made such a difference
for her little girls, one gentle nuzzle at a time.
Reading to Dogs Program - Many children are intimidated
when having to read in front of a class. Studies have found
that reading to a dog instead, in a one-on-one environment,
improves reading skills. Both Tia and Kyi participate in
these programs at elementary schools and public libraries in
Southwest Washington.
These two special Tibbies were recognized by the American
Kennel Club for their participation in the Pet Partner therapy
dog program. Tia received the AKC Therapy Dog certificate
and patch for 50 therapy visitations. Kyi received the AKC
Therapy Dog Excellent certificate and patch for 200 therapy
visitations.
When they arrived, I told the mom that when it was
time for her daughters to lie back in the dentist’s chair,
Kyi would crawl up on each girl’s chest. If at any point
Kyi sensed either girl was hurting, he would gently
move closer to the child’s face to offer more comfort.
At one point during the 3-year-old’s procedure, her
mom watched Kyi snuggle closer. “I saw Ayla stick
her hand out and just pat Kyi,” Mom said.

Joan Reiter Child
January 24, 1938 to March 18, 2008
Joan Reiter Child waltzed into my life in mid-1978 or so when I signed up to help with the
Associated Rare Breeds of New England show committee. I knew Jay Child before I knew
Joan but it was in Joan that I found the honor and honesty of a true sister. She became
one of the dearest people in my life for nearly three decades. Soon I had purchased my
first Tibetan Spaniels and become an active Tibbie breeder under my former Lhasa Apso
banner Dynasty. By 1983 Joan and I had become fast friends and close cohorts in every
sense of the word.
In 1984, together with Yvonne Crofts (my long standing mentor from Great Danes), we
formed Jo’Jevon Tibetan Spaniels. Now it became Joan, Jean and Yvonne against the
dog show world, and succeed we did.
We gave Tibetan Spaniels their first top ten Non-Sporting Group winning Showdog and #1
Breed Dog whose winning record stood for nearly 20 years as well as multiple ROMX
recipients and multiple top ten breeding producers. All in all, Joan’s Truk-Ku line and / or
our Jo’Jevon partnership seeded nearly every breeding line with top flight brood stock and
show winners.
Joan was a founder and President of TSCA until she requested retirement and voluntarily
relinquished her position to Phyllis Kohler, but at the request of nearly everyone, she
remained a Board member for many, many more years. She guided the board from within
the ranks with the same sure hand she guided our Jo’Jevon breeding program. She loved
this breed and The Tibetan Spaniel Club as a whole.
In 2001 our partnership lost Yvonne to the chronic lung disease she battled for several
years. But Joan and I remained partners for nearly another decade and remained so until
her death in 2008. I feel her loss today and every day. God is lucky to have her with him
organizing the angels and all our Tibbies across the bridge.

Yvonne C. Crofts
November 10, 1929 to December 9, 2001
Yvonne was the least known member of the Jo’Jevon partnership, but she provided a vital
part of our early success as a breeder partnership. She added the Von to Jo’Jevon.
I first met Yvonne when I became President of the Nutmeg Dog Breeder Referral Service. I
had been happily breeding Boxers for several years, but needed the help of an all breed club
to finance our referral service so we approached St Hubert Kennel Club. Yvonne was on the
Board of Directors, voted to join our Service and our relationship was born. Before long our
friendship developed into a mentorship.
I had always handled my own Boxers in the show ring but Yvonne never did so. One day I
took out one of her Great Danes to practice with a larger dog, and ended by successfully
piloting him to his championship. Eventually we formed a partnership around Yvonne’s
Lazycroft breeding program, and I became a more or less permanent part of her daily life.
But she was a very private person and difficult to really know, so few people in Tibetan
Spaniels really knew anything at all about her.
Yvonne saw me through some of the most difficult events of my life. Birth of my son, the end
of my tenure in Boxers, losing my Mom, even my separation and eventual divorce were just
a few of those things. Ten years older than I, she had lived more and seen more than I had
ever experienced in my life at that time.
By the time I knew her, she had already survived the violent death of two husbands and was
left to raise nine children alone. Yvonne held degrees in Animal Genetics and developed the
largest poultry operation our area operating five farms and a hatchery. She taught me most
of what I know about dog breeding and genetics, and the practical side of how to put that
knowledge to work in breeding and puppy selection. She brought knowledge and toughness
to the Jo’Jevon partnership for both Joan and I.
I miss our corporate meetings with Joan and Yvonne planning our next breeding and show
ring moves. Especially the meetings when I was almost always out voted, or lay sprawled out
on her living-room floor with pedigrees laid out end to end to plan the next breeding. She
touched our lives and then moved on. I hope we will all meet again at the bridge to replay
those happy times.

Top Winning Tibetan Spaniel in AKC History
GCH KAN SING’S TENZIN
“TENZIN”
T
By Martha Feltenstein
Tenzin was born on May 8, 2010, the smallest in his
litter. This was my first Tibbie litter and I made Mallory Driskill (as I pointed out, she was the grandmother) come up to New York to
whelp the litter. The night Mallory arrived, Nanda, who would never give her the
time of day till then, took one look at her and said “Thank God, someone who
knows what they are doing.” Even though Tenzin was the smallest in the litter,
there was always something special about him. Given his parents, I had high
hopes for him but had no idea what he would achieve.
Tenzin as a puppy
His mother, CH Ambrier’s Nanda Devi, was my first Tibbie. She was #1 Tibetan
Spaniel All Systems in 2007. She won the National in 2007 under Richard Jeffery, and the breed at Westminster
in 2006 and 2007. His father, CH Lorac’s Yeshe Wongchhu, was #1 Tibetan Spaniel All Systems in 2009 and
won the breed at Westminster in 2008 and 2009 and won 1st Award of Merit at
the 2008 National under Everett Dean and BOS at the 2009 National under Lester Mapes.
Tenzin finished quickly and came home to grow up. Tenzin was only specialed
for two years and had an amazing show career, winning 9 Best in Shows,
13 Reserve Best in Shows and 88 Group 1s. He won the Group at the National
Dog Show in Philadelphia in 2012 and placed second in the Group at the AKC
Eukanuba National Championships in December 2012 and 2013, and 4th in the
Group at the Westminster Kennel Club in
2013 and 2nd in the Group at the Westminster Kennel Club in 2014. He was #1 Tibetan Spaniel All Systems 2012 and 2013,
and #3 Non-Sporting Dog in 2013, the
highest ranking ever achieved by a Tibbie.
Tenzin retired at Westminster 2014.
Tenzin has broken all the records (the record for most Best in Shows was
previously held, for 20 years, by CH Jo’Jevon Distant Thunder, owned and
handled by Carol Tyte) and, at the age of 3, became the top-winning Tibetan Spaniel in breed history. He is also, to date, the only Platinum Grand
Champion Tibetan Spaniel.
Tenzin is enjoying retirement (he is now a mature 4 years old) and ruling
over a harem of Tibbies, Tibetan Mastiffs and Ibizan Hounds. In March of
this year, he was asked to be the “OFA Champion of Health” for the
month.
2014 Westminster KC
Group 2
Many thanks go to his handlers, Diego and Evelyn Garcia, without who none of this would have been possible,
as well as to Mallory, who began all of this with Nanda.
