Companhia das Letras has recently started relaunching Lygia’s books in Brazil, with covers elegantly illustrated with Beatriz Milhazes’s works. The first books launched were The Girls, Invention and Memory and Before the Green Ball. The next ones to be published soon are The Marble Dance, Rats’ Seminary and The Dark Night and Me. The Spies Our Delusions is an essay on some of the modern myths that have the power to both attract and impose limits to us at the same time. Less solemn substitutes of ancient myths, created to defend us from fear and astonishment before the nature phenomena, birth and death, etc, the so called “modern myths” deal with earthly matters: the myth of eternal youth and the obligations of our false liberty, for example. Still recovering from the weekend’s hangover, an employee of a small publishing house receives an envelope with the first pages of an unfinished confessions book written by someone called Ariadne, who promises to tell her story with a secret lover and then commit suicide. Tormented by romantic dreams, this frustrated bohemian decides to find out who Ariadne is and try to save her from her imminent death. With sensibility and humour, Lya Luft and her son Eduardo Luft, philosopher, tell the delightful adventure of three children that learn how wonderful it is to grow up questioning the world, always trying to ask the essential questions, even though the answers might not always be found. Sergio Rodrigues Carlos Domingos Disguised Opportunities Elza, The Girl The Confession Milamor Milamor introduces us to Maria, a woman near her sixties who has been living with her patronizing daughter since the death of her husband. Hoping to rediscover joy in her life and determined to create new memories, she nurtures a platonic love for a man she barely knows in a compelling story. Girl’s Bedroom Girls’ Bedroom, praised as “Highly Recommended” by the FNLIJ, tells the story of a girl lost in the age between childhood and adolescence, with a heart full of questions, doubts and pain. Daughter of divorced parents, she has made of her bedroom a secret heaven, in which she confides her feelings to dolls and a cricket that lives in a flower pot. This novel is narrated by a man in a frantic quest, using pleasure and death as the instruments to regain control of his own life. He kidnaps a woman, takes her to a desert shore, ties her up to a chair and starts to tell her a long story the reader will find to be a story of love, fear and surprise in which she plays an important and unusual role. The Distance Of Things Pedro is a fourteen year-old boy who lost his father while still very young, and just received the bad news that his mother had died in a car accident. He has no choice but to live with his uncle, who doesn’t even allow him to visit her grave. Suspicious, he believes that adults are hiding something from him, and decides to act like a detective, investigating his uncle’s privacy. He then discovers secrets that will change his whole life. For The Distance of Things, Flávio Carneiro won the Barco a Vapor Award, from Editora SM, and has recently been awarded the Jabuti Prize 2009. In a bold mixture of reality and fiction, historical research and literary invention, this fast-paced novel tells the real tragic story of Elza Fernandes, a 16 year-old communist who got involved in the famous “Intentona” – a failed attempt to overthrow the Brazilian government orchestrated in 1935 by the Third International. Arnaldo Bloch The Karamabloch Brothers Arnaldo Bloch narrates with humour and literary sensibility the picturesque saga of his own family, from the end of the 19th century until today, covering both the heyday times, with the Bloch publishers and the Manchete Magazine, and the beginning of downfall, with the Manchete TV. Disguised Opportunities is a compendium of real stories of companies and individuals that turned problems and serious crisis into great opportunities. Result of seven years of research, it brings hundreds of curious facts and exciting passages involving the biggest world brands and some of the most admired entrepreneurs of all times. Arthur Dapieve Black Music Michael Philips is in his way to be a seven-footer, when he is kidnapped by a gang of Rio de Janeiro’s drug dealers. Seeing at stake his dreams of playing basketball and studying trumpet at the same university attended by his idol Michael Jordan, his passion for jazz begins to captivate both the chief dealer, a 17 years old white boy who dreams of becoming a gansta rap star, and the captivity’s cooker, a 16 years old mulatto girl who loves to dance at one of Rio’s famous bailes funk.
