Much has happened since my last missal. Congratulations to all members of the 2014 Pasifika Vibes group for their outstanding performance at Polyfest last term. Special thanks to the tutors and Ms Jackson for their time and commitment. The senior boys basketball also had a fantastic national tournament winning their division—an outstanding achievement. Congratulations to the team and coach Gerard Mullin who works tirelessly to promote basketball in the College. Recently Kavanagh teacher Iris Bugarski was named female coach of the year by Football South. Iris has inspired over 30 girls mostly in Years 9 and 10 to play soccer. All of the teams have acquitted themselves extremely well having to play in a higher senior division. Thanks also to former student and head prefect Olivia O'Kane for giving back coaching time to the team. Although much has been made by some in the community of the absence of sport performance at Kavanagh all evidence is to the contrary as individuals and teams have excelled this year. The 1st XV rugby team won their final against Taieri to earn the right to return to the Highlanders competition next year and the 1st XI Football team pushed the highly regarded OB's team and beat them for the first time in a decade. Hockey, badminton and diverse sports such as curling have all seen success. Individuals have also excelled on the regional, national and international stage. Sport is a key component to any school and the development of young people. The Board have significantly increased sports provision and resources at Kavanagh over the last two years. Our vision is to provide the best opportunities for students in all codes and to compete and succeed to the highest level. We also want students to play sport for the shear joy of it. However we have to be realistic in terms of sport and balance it out with all the other elements that make a school successful. We are not a large school in terms of secondary sport and we continue to box above our weight. The key point is Kavanagh College is much more than a one trick pony. We are a school of substance with a proud tradition of success. We cater to a broad community and the pursuit of excellence in one area can't be to the detriment of any other—it's all important and it all has a place in the school. Of course we have to keep striving to lift our game in sport (pun intended!) - and in academics, the arts, culture and special character. I thank students, parents and staff for their great commitment to sport and for their ongoing loyalty in supporting the school and Catholic education. On the surface many schools are now marketing for enrolments with a lot of "glitz and glam" but I urge people to look a little deeper under the rug and ensure the substance is there. World of Wearable Art Trip to Wellington Senior Textile Design Technology students went to Wellington in the first week of the holidays to attend the WOW show. It was a highly successful trip taking in Te Papa, Massey University, City Gallery, Cable car and zoo, amongst other attractions. Jenny Kennedy, Kavanagh’s librarian, went with us as a support person. The weather was superb and everyone had an enjoyable time. All Kavanagh Students to attend the Jubilee Mass Year 10 Parents Labour Weekend— 26th of October If you are aware that your child will require exam support in 2015 in the form of a reader/writer/extra time, please contact the College. All Kavanagh students are asked to come to the Jubilee Mass at the Dunedin Stadium, in uniform, please. This is a wonderful, once in a life time, opportunity to celebrate our history and identity as a school after 25 years! This will be the only Mass in the city on that Sunday and it will be an event like never before. You don't have to have signed up for the reunion to attend and parents and wider family are warmly encouraged to come along and join all the Catholic primary schools and parishes in this city-wide celebration of catholic education. Parents/Caregivers— Student Roll Numbers 2015 At this time of the year we are under some pressure to determine our roll numbers for 2015. Each year families may move away from Dunedin, senior students may find employment or may have been accepted for tertiary training. If your son/daughter will not be attending Kavanagh College in 2015 we require written notification from you as soon as possible. Please state the leaving date, reason for leaving, and name of new school / or training establishment. Thank you. YEAR 7-9 AQUATICS LESSONS: All Years 7-9 classes are completing five to six lessons during term 4. These will occur during timetable Health and Physical Education time at Moana Pool. The focus of the lessons will be swimming stroke and technique. Years 7 and 8 lessons will be taken by Swimsation while Year 9 lessons will be taught and supervised by your child’s Health and Physical Education teacher. Moana Pool life guards will also be on duty at the pool during each lesson. Students will walk to and from Moana Pool. Students will be clearly instructed on the safe procedure for walking to and from Moana Pool. If you have any information about your child’s swimming ability that would be important for the teacher to be aware of, or there is important medical information that the teacher should know please make contact directly with your child’s Health and Physical Education teacher on 4773408 kdkennedy@kavanagh.school.nz. INDOOR TOUCH MVP - TOM HENDERSON Year 11 student Tom Henderson has been named as Kavanagh College's Indoor Touch most valuable player. Tom had a stellar indoor touch season and thoroughly deserves this award. Tom played in the KC Hurricanes team during term three at the Edgar Centre. The summer outdoor season has just started and throughout the week Tom plays premiere level Touch at Taieri, The Oval and Bishopscourt. Tom will no doubt again feature in an Otago representative team this season. Applications to NZQA will begin in term 4 of this year. In some cases further testing will be required. The third and final dose of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will be given to the Year 8 girls on Tuesday 21st October . If a student is away that day, she can receive the vaccination at a later date in a catch-up clinic at school. Only girls whose parent or caregiver has consented in writing will be given the vaccine at school. Parents or caregivers can accompany their daughters on the day of vaccination, if they wish. Please ask the office what time the nurses will be at your school. On the day of vaccination, please ensure your daughter has breakfast, and wears a loose-sleeved top, if possible. Side effects of the vaccine are uncommon, and the students should be able to participate in normal physical activities a few hours after the vaccination. All girls born from 1993 onwards are eligible for free HPV vaccine through their GP practice until their 20th Birthday. An outstanding result from our Senior A Boys Basketball team. After qualifying last term they travelled to Palmerston North in the holidays to compete in the New Zealand Secondary Schools A Championship. On day one they started with two good wins over Catholic Cathedral 87 - 68 and Huanui 78 - 68. Day two started well with a strong win over Stratford 84 - 70. They then suffered their first loss to Aquinas 61 - 76. Day three started with a big win over Opunake 80 - 41. This put them into a sudden death semi-final against a very tough Te Aroha team. At three quarter time we were down 49 - 51. With 40 seconds to go the scores were tied up. Kavanagh then scored 9 consecutive points to take out the win and a place in the final. The final was against the 'old foe' St Kevins. In a great performance Kavanagh dominated the game and came away with a great win. Kavanagh was crowned National Champions!!! The team was: Jacob Cromb, Tsz Kai (Marcus) Chan, Lawrence Kim, Isaac King, Jacob Koopman, Liam Lavelle-Pool, James McDonald, Alex Nettleton, Richard Rodger and Miguel Santos Richard, James and Jacob were named in the tournament team and Richard was named as tournament Most Valuable Player. C ongratulations to Felix Kyle (10MCK) who represented Kavanagh at the New Zealand secondary school mountain bike champs held here in Dunedin during the holidays. Felix competed in two events, the Downhill and Super D Enduro race. He placed 16th in the South Island and 18th in NZ for the Downhill event. In the Super D, which was raced in terrible weather, he placed 3rd in the South Island and 6th in New Zealand. Felix was the sole rider representing the College and with the points he earned Kavanagh placed 31st out of the 45 schools involved. A great effort by Felix! C ongratulations to Ben Millar-Coote on his selection in the New Zealand U18 Ice Hockey team! C ongratulations to Christina Weston who was awarded two gold medals in the South Island Diving Championships. This has gained her entry into the National Championships which are being held in Hamilton in October. Well done! Congratulations and thank you to coach Gerard Mullin, Assistant Coach Grant Roydhouse, and Assistant Coach and Teacher in Charge Scott Reid. A huge thanks also to the parent managers group of Liz Piper, Rose Nettleton, Chona Rodger and Angela Cromb. Preparing to Study: A Good Study Place The DETER Strategy for Taking Tests You need a good study place to be prepared to study. You should be able to answer YES to all of the following questions: To do well on a test, you must have good knowledge of the information that is being tested. But you must also have a strategy for taking the test that allows you to show what you know. The DETER strategy can help you do your best on any test. Each letter in DETER reminds you what to do. 1. Is my Study Place available to me whenever I need it? Your Study Place does you little good if you cannot use it when you need it. If you are using a Study Place that you must share with others for any reason, work out a schedule so that you know when you can use it. 2. Is my Study Place free from interruptions? It is important to have uninterrupted study time. You may have to hang a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door or take the phone off the hook. 3. Is my Study Place free from distractions? Research shows that most students study best in a quiet environment. If you find that playing a stereo or TV improves your mood, keep the volume low. D = Directions Read the test directions very carefully. Ask your teacher to explain anything about the test directions you do not understand. Only by following the directions can you achieve a good score on the test. If you do not follow the directions, you will not be able to demonstrate what you know. E = Examine Examine the entire test to see how much you have to do. Be sure your Study Place includes reference sources and supplies such as pens and pencils, paper, ruler, calculator, and whatever else you might need. If you use a computer for your schoolwork, it should be in your Study Place . Only by knowing the entire task can you break it down into parts that become manageable for you. 5. Does my Study Space contain a large enough desk or table? Once you have examined the entire test, decide how much time you will spend on each item. If there are different points for items, plan to spend the most time on the items that count for the most points. Planning your time is especially important for essay tests where you must avoid spending so much time on one item that you have little time left for other test items. 4. Does my Study Place contain all the study materials I need? While working on an assignment or studying for a test, use a desk or table that is large enough to hold everything you need. Allow enough room for writing and try to avoid clutter. T = Time 6. Does my Study Place have enough storage space? You need enough room to store your study materials. Be sure you have enough storage space to allow you to keep your desktop or other work surface clear of unnecessary materials that can get in the way. 7. Does my Study Place have a comfortable chair? A chair that is not comfortable can cause discomfort or pain that will interfere with your studying. A chair that is too comfortable might make you sleepy. Select a chair in which you can sit for long periods while maintaining your attention. 8. Does my Study Place have enough light? The amount of light you need depends on what you are doing. The important thing is that you can clearly see what you need to see without any strain or discomfort. E = Easiest The second E in DETER reminds you to answer the items you find easiest first. If you get stuck on a difficult item that comes up early in the test, you may not get to answer items that test things you know. R = Review If you have planned your time correctly, you will have time to review your answers and make them as complete and accurate as possible. Also make sure to review the test directions to be certain you have answered all items required. 9. Does my Study Place have a comfortable temperature? If your Study Place is too warm, you might become sleepy. If it is too cold, your thinking may slow down and become unclear. Select a temperature at which your mind and body function best. Having a good Study Place is important for good studying. Using the DETER strategy will help you do better on tests and get better grades. Tutorials for Students in Years 11-13 The College is looking to raise awareness with parents of the various tutorials being offered by staff. We would encourage students to attend as many of these as possible. Below is a list of Tutorials being offered and details will be updated in subsequent Newsletters.
