Getting scary
I just love Halloween.What’s cooler than a day dedicated to celebrating monsters! It’s a kids’ dream, and it was my favorite next to Christmas.There is plenty
to do in the Inland Empire in the the month of October, and you certainly won’t
have a hard time finding ways to get into the Halloween spirit.
We’ve got your Halloween guide on pages 4-7, starting with the places to get
your pumpkin. Don’t just pick one up at the grocery store, make an event out of
it by going to an actual pumpkin patch. Patches make it fun to pumpkin hunt by
offering activities for the kids in a suitably atmospheric autumn setting.We’ve also
got the rundown on some of the best haunted houses in the area, including Southern
California’s most famous haunt, Knott’s Scary Farm. If getting scared isn’t your thing, we
also list some Halloween alternatives.
This issue is also chock full of the month’s entertainment goodies.As usual, enjoy!

The Pumpkin Patch at Live Oak Canyon
offers a huge, 15-acre pumpkin patch. The
choice is enormous, with fields where you
can pick them right off of the ground to rows
of pre-picked pumpkins to choose from.
The farm itself is an excellent family desti-
nation, bursting with Autumn atmosphere and
colors. Indian corn, gourds, winter squash,
corn stalks and more are available for Fall
decorating.
Arrive with time to spare since Live Oak
offers a great deal of family activities, from
jumpers and slides to quad rides and live
music. They also serve food and snacks.
Near the entrance to the patch is a store
with seasonal items, most to help decorate
your home and get it into the Halloween
spirit.
The Pumpkin Patch offers carving kits and
demonstrations on weekends to show you
how to carve a quality jack-o-lantern.

“Thousands of children will invade the
farm looking for that special pumpkin,”
owner Jun Budye said.
In addition to serving as a pumpkin
patch, Greenspot offers tours for school
children that take about an hour. The
hayride tour goes around the entire farm,
which also grows apples, oranges,
Christmas trees, avocados and more. They
also visit a bee hive and get a taste of
fresh honey, get close to farm animals,
and take a trip through a large hedged
maze.
A Haunted Hayride is offered Oct. 23,
24, 25, 30 and 31 and Nov. 1 from 7pm to
10pm.

One of Southern California’s most
famous fright sites, the Scary Farm has

The Haunt is on at Calico Ghost Town
October 29 -31. This is the one weekend
a year where ghosts walk the streets of

Southern California Fair
Country Group ‘Trick Pony’ Comes To The SC Fair
T
he annual
Southern
California
Fair
brings 9
days of activities to the
Lake Perris Fairgrounds,
including five nights of
concerts in the Coors
Arena. The fair, known formerly as the
Farmers Fair & Festival, runs Oct. 16 - 24.
Country Group “Trick Pony” will perform Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7:30pm. Trick
Pony was formed in 1996 with the trio
of Ira Dean, Keith Burns and Heidi
Newfield. By 2001 they were a finalist
in Billboard Music Awards for New
Country Artist of The Year. It wasn’t
long after that they had their number
one single “On A Night Like This.”
In 2002, the trio was named Top New
Vocal Duo/Group by the Academy of
Country Music and Favorite New Country
Artist by the American Music Awards.
Things didn’t slow down for them the
next year as they garnered a Grammy
nomination for Best Country
Performance By A Duo or Group for
their song “Just What I Do.”
“Having a band with such success
and energy like Trick Pony will be a
great act to have,” Lyndal Graff,
CEO/Secretary Manager of the Southern
California Fair, said. “With country
music very popular in this area, we are
hoping people will have a great time at
the fair.”
Trick Pony is one of five musical acts
to headline the fair’s concert series.
Kicking off the fair’s concert series will
be The Beach Boys on Monday, October
18 and continues with Phil Vassar on
Tuesday, October 19, Chris LeDoux on
Wednesday, October 20, Trick Pony on
Thursday, October 21, and Newsboys on
Friday, October 22.
Motorized events are scheduled on
the weekends of the fair with the
Monster Truck Show on opening day,
Saturday, October 16 and the PRCA
Rodeo on Sunday, October 17. The
motorized events will continue on the
final weekend of the fair with the Truck
and Tractor Pull, Auto Racing and
Extreme Motorcycles on Saturday,
October 23 and the Demolition Derby on
Sunday, October 24.
Themed “A Timeless Tradition,” the
Southern California Fair will also host
exhibits, livestock, arena events, carnival

he Inland Empire is fortunate to have an apple ranching region in its own back yard. Oak Glen, located in
the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains just
above the city of Yucaipa, has been pleasing visitors
for over 100 years and part of that history is Apple
Annie’s Bakery & Restaurant located at OakTree Village.
Annie’s is the home of the original Mile High Apple Pie.
Oaktree Village plays host to thousands of local and national visitors every year.
“I love the pies,” Linda Uithoven of Yucaipa said. “Especially
the Mile High Apple Pie. I didn’t know they could make them
that big.” Art Wilson, the patriarch of the family that owns the
Village and Apple Annie’s says, “Visitors love the pies at Apple
Annie’s. We usually bake about 2500 pies each Saturday and
Sunday. It’s hard to keep up the pace but we have a great team
of bakers that get the job done.”
Apple Annie’s has all kinds of baked apple goodies including
an apple dumpling with cinnamon sauce that’s sure to satisfy
even the most hearty of apple appetites. In addition to a tasty
breakfast and lunch menu, the restaurant also serves a Family
Style Dinner where you feel like you are a guest at Annie’s dining room table. Each course is brought to your table in large
bowls and platters. Customers then pass the bowls and serve
themselves. It’s great fun and makes you feel at home.

ardeners take note! November is California planting season and Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden
is preparing for its annual Fall presentation of
nearly 15,000 plants for sale to the public. This is
an ideal opportunity to purchase plants, seeds and
bulbs from one of the largest plant collections in the area.
Saturday and Sunday, November 6 and 7, the Botanic Garden
staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist with selections.
The plant sale features over 12,000 native and Californiafriendly plants, many propagated from Rancho Santa Ana
Botanic Garden collections and unavailable anywhere else. The
Garden will offer a selection of Penstemon, Arctostaphylos,
Salvia, Heuchera, Mimulus, Zauschneria and Ceanothus species
and cultivars in a wide range of colors, plus trees, shrubs and
perennials.
The Botanic Garden, located in Claremont, is a great place to
buy hard-to-find, one-of-a-kind natives as well as to get gardening questions answered.
The 26th Annual Fall Plant Sale will take place Nov. 6-7, with
a members only sale on Saturday from 8-11am and Sunday
11am to 4pm. The public sale takes place on Sunday, from 9am
to Noon. Memberships are sold at the door.

Motorcycle Extravaganza
‘American Heat’ roars into Palm Springs
T
he motorcycle extravaganza,
“American Heat,” lands in Palm
Springs Oct. 8-10 for a weekend
of two-wheeled excitement. The
event features stunt shows and
live entertainment.
This year, “Heat” has drawn the attention
of cable TV, with the Discovery Channel’s
hit show, “Biker Build Off,” planning to
attend.
American Heat will fill a special events
plaza on N. Calle El Segundo between E.
Andreas and E. Tahquitz Canyon, giving
participants the space they need to perform
stunts.
The popular “Biker Build Off” TV show
on the Discovery Channel will be at the
event and American Heat attendees can
vote for their favorite custom bike creation
while the TV cameras roll.
One of the show’s highlights is the
LivFast stunt show, where team members
jump from ramp to ramp and perform
motorcycle tricks as they fly 70 feet through
the air, 30 to 40 feet off the ground.
“They’re after big air and they’re amazing,” Roadshows President Randy Burke
said.
LivFast will perform Fri., and Sat., Oct. 8
and 9, in the afternoon and evening.
You can also watch Monte Perlin fly
around on a motorcycle in his Globe of
Death, a 15-foot steel ball, during stunt
shows Fri., and Sat. afternoons, Oct. 8 and
9, and Sun. morning, Oct. 10. His performances are live and free.
An actor, stuntman and stunt coordinator, Perlin grew up in the mountains near
Lake Arrowhead, where his daredevil tendencies had the wide-open space they
needed to be nurtured.
At the tender age of ten, Perlin hounded
his folks for a dirt bike.
His father said, “Sure, but you have to
buy it yourself,” probably thinking he was
safe from concern for a few years, since the
kid was barely into double digits.

“I worked the whole summer in a campground, keeping it clean, raking pine needles – anything to get the cash,” he said.
He saved his pay and by the end of the
summer had $395 to buy his first dirt bike.
“I was on top of the world!” The then
ten-year-old said he was so excited he
couldn’t sleep.
His parents used the bike to keep him
on the straight and narrow. “Every time I
screwed up, it was three weeks to a month
with no motorcycle and I thought I would
die,” Perlin said.

he Off-Broadway Play Series of Riverside Community
College presents its first offering of the season, “And
Miss Reardon Drinks a Little,” by Paul Zindel, directed
by Douglas Buckhout. This biting, touching and often
wildly funny play probes deeply into the tortured relationship of the three Reardon sisters who, having grown up fatherless, have just lost their elderly mother.
One sister is married and has cut herself off; one has begun to
drink more than she should; and the third, after a scandalous incident at the school where she teaches, is on the brink of a nervous
breakdown. As the sisters come together again, simmering resentments of the past come bubbling up and build to a shattering conclusion. Newsweek said, “In Paul Zindel we seem to have that rarity – a playwright who can write intelligent, sensitive, entertaining
plays for a wide public.”

Annual Calimesa Community Concert Series, sponsored

Theater, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to teaching communication and development of “self” through the medium of theater, was established 47 years ago.The organization offers two ways to get involved in theater: a school which meets on Saturday morn-

theater, and the Production Company that

the Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest celebrates its 34th year this October.
The Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest
tapped its first keg of beer in 1970
and has since grown into one of the
largest Oktoberfest celebrations in
Southern California. Big Bear’s festival has become a favorite because
of its beautiful location and unique
blend of authentic German fun and
American ingenuity.
Aside from drinking beer and
eating, other activities include the
steinholding contest, log sawing contests, the Coors NA Safe Slam beer
drinking contest and, on Sundays,
special childrens’ contests.
A variety of authentic German
dance groups perform throughout
Oktoberfest, as well. The
Trachtenverein Traunstoana
Schuhplatter Dancers are a 21-member dance troop direct from
Abentau,Austria. They specialize in traditional Austrian folk dances
dating back to the 1800’s.
The Gemutlichen Shuhplattlers are a 14-member dance troop
that hails from Orange County.The group has performed at various
events and festivals throughout Southern California.
Even the littlest visitors to Oktoberfest will find something new
to enjoy this year: their own Kinder Garten (Children’s Garden).
The Kinder Garten is a children’s area featuring a petting zoo, jump
house, slide and other various children games and activities.
The Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest through October 31. The festival
