AID Opens “The Monkey Business Café” at Aurora’s SciTech Hands on Museum
On August 31st, AID opened The Monkey Business Café at 18 W Benton St. in Aurora, inside
the Sci-Tech Museum. The Director of the Sci-Tech Museum, Arlene Hawks, approached
AID with an opportunity to run the café to use it as a hands on training experience for
clients who are interested in food service.
Clients at the café learn how to operate a cash register, take food orders and how to safely
handle food. The café sells snack food such as warm pretzels, nachos, muffins, chips
and various beverages including coffee. Two of the products currently sold in the café are
made, packaged and distributed by individuals who have disabilities.
One product is Jumpy Monkey Coffee which is roasted and packaged in Iowa by a not for
profit organization serving individuals with disabilities. The gourmet granola bars are by
Kando Bakery and are made locally in the Elgin area and are also packaged by individuals
with disabilities.
Monkey Business Café is open from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday. The café serves coffee, snack food, ice cream,
muffins and a variety of bottled beverages. Come visit us!

Dear friends and benefactors,
Good news for the first time in many years- AID had no cuts in state funding this
fiscal year. On the other hand, we have not had rate increases for our services
for many years. We are in the most challenging of economic times.
Despite this, we still have many things to celebrate. We have replaced the
leased Day Service Center in Yorkville with one we now own on Rt. 47. Watch
for an Open House invitation later this fall. We have greatly expanded home
based services, and opened several new group homes in Aurora and Geneva
as a result of the Ligas law suit which is funding persons from our waiting list.
We opened STARS III on River Street in Aurora in collaboration with the Fox
Valley Special Recreation Association. A new Special Education Transition
program began this month at Keeler Center in Aurora, for students aged
18-21 in preparation for transition to AID adult services, thanks to generous
contributions from the Seigle Family Foundation, Caterpillar and the INC
Board.
We have also expanded supported housing services for individuals with
behavioral health challenges in the Aurora area-91 persons now receive this
service. With the help of key Board members, we are enhancing our recovery,
consumer and family services and adding tools to our website. Plans to open an
apartment building on Edgelawn in Aurora are underway also thanks to grants
from the City of Aurora.
Despite our efforts to keep pace with requests for service, the waiting list
numbers across the Fox Valley continue to grow. We have actively launched
the Show You Care Kane campaign to place a question on the March 18 ballot
asking voters to support the creation of a Developmental Disabilities Service
Board. If you have not already done so, please “Like” us on Facebook and urge
your friends and family to do the same.
Together, we can make a positive difference in the lives of children and adults

AID Creates School Transition Program
AID, a leader in providing services to individuals with disabilities in the Fox Valley, will
develop a new school- to- adult services transition program to be housed at the AID Keeler
Center in Aurora.
This Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)-approved program will address the needs
of students and their families in Kane County who are preparing to transition from high
school to adult services. Given the current unacceptable state of transition resources for
high school-to-adult-services, students and their families are not adequately prepared for
the changes to services after they age out of school (entitlement versus eligibility).
The target population for this program is 18-21 year old special education students with
significant behavioral, emotional, physical and/or developmental disabilities who are
not eligible for the Student Assistance in Learning (SAIL) and other special education
transition programs.
The AID school transition program will ‘step down’ the school program service intensity
and focus on work skills and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) so that by age 22 the students
can successfully transition to adult services. Students will attend the AID Transition
program each day and will participate in a structured curriculum that includes functional
life skills, academics, communication, vocational skills, recreation and community
integration, behavioral challengesMore

Employees of Caterpillar Aurora Participate in a Community Day of Caring for AID
On Saturday, June 22nd, 125 employees of Caterpillar (CAT) Aurora and their
family members held their inaugural Community Day; they all donated their
personal time to do volunteer service work in the Aurora community.
AID was one of four local human service organizations that benefited from the
CAT Community Day projects.
AID recently purchased an apartment building in Aurora that, once removed,
will provide affordable housing to eight low-income individuals. The building was
purchased through the City of Aurora Community Housing Development Program.
Funds were limited to purchase and the building desperately needed extensive
renovation and repair to avail it for suitable living; CAT volunteers made those
renovations possible.
CAT volunteers removed appliances, cabinet doors, carpet, and interior doors,
old bushes, old wood fences, clothesline poles and concrete bases, and installed
new mailboxes and exterior light fixtures. The volunteers’ hard work came at the
right time and allowed AID to allocate funds to services instead of repairs.
The Caterpillar Aurora family showed their generosity by working through inclement weather. The helping hands and
positive spirits made for a successful, productive and fun Caterpillar Community Day 2013. Thanks to all!

Behavioral Health Recovery Corner - Client Success Stories Spotlight:
Liz has been coming to weekly counseling sessions at AID for the past year. She is the youngest child in a large family and
had been living in her mother’s home following her mother’s death several years ago. Liz was not able to pay the real estate
taxes on the family home, found out that the house would be repossessed, and that she would have to move out. In addition,
Liz was dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety which made it difficult for her to work full time.
She was also in a car accident which has caused her a lot of pain and several surgeries.
In the past year, Liz was able to open up about some of her grief and loss issues and learn skills to lessen her depression
and anxiety. She is also stable on medications. Liz has found a part-time job, applied to go back to college, and recently
moved into her own apartment. She finds her apartment to be a very peaceful place and she is hopeful about her future.
Brian has been a client of AID for several years. He has dealt with several obstacles through out his life. Brian is a
recovering alcoholic who has been sober for over 10 years. He understands that his decisions and actions in the past have
had a negative impact on him and loved ones. He continues to learn from those mistakes and makes an effort to improve
himself everyday.
In the past 10 months Brian has made great strides. Brian in the past, struggled to take his medications correctly and also
had trouble remembering when his appointments were, sometimes he could not even remember what day it was. Through
increased support from staff, hard work by Brian and the help of his doctor Brian began to take his medications correctly.
Brian now packs his medications for longer periods of time and continues to make improvements in his personal life. Brian
has returned to cleaning his apartment and doing his grocery shopping on his own. Brian has set new goals for himself that
include quitting smoking, starting a healthy diet and building his checking account. Now that Brian feels more confident
in himself he plans to start attending Pathways again. With some of the money that he saves he plans to attend his son’s
wedding next year. Brian is a resilient and inspiring individual.

Lifetime AID Friend, Supporter and Champion Passes Away at 83
Marilyn Brailey Wilson, a longtime AID board of member and advocate, passed away
peacefully on September 19th, 2013, with her family by her side. AID extends a personal
thanks to Marilyn for all her hard work, dedication and concern. She added spark and
enthusiasm in helping AID build programs whereby persons with disabilities could strive
“Towards a Life of Their Own.”
As an early education advocate, Marilyn actively participated in and provided tireless
volunteer support for the Elgin public schools, which all her children attended. She also
conducted pre-school Sunday School at First United Methodist. Her community leadership
broke new ground and accomplished great things for people with special needs.
In 1969 she started and then ran a pilot program for vocational skills development in work
settings for individuals with disabilities. This small sheltered workshop grew into both
leadership roles and a long-time affiliation with AID.

The family requested no gifts and no flowers. That is not what Marilyn would want.
Donations to AID in her memory are encouraged.
AID Clients Help Pack School Supplies for Those in Need
On Wednesday, August 7th, AID partnered with several other community
organizations in an effort to sort and pack 3,000 supply kits for families in need
in the Aurora community.
This annual event, organized by the non-profit group “Communities in Schools”
helps Aurora children return to school with necessary supplies.

AID Staff and Clients Walk for Wellness
To further promote the AID Health and Wellness Initiative, the Virtual
Motivation Vacation was a ten week program designed to increase
physical activity for staff and clients. Each week participants received
a virtual walking journey through a European country. Each journey was
measured in distance and points of interest were highlighted along the
journey (if you completed the whole mileage indicated, you would “see”
everything highlighted on the journey).
The idea was for staff and clients to participate in any exercise
throughout a given week, catalog their activities and equate their
distances achieved with the distances on the virtual map; envisioning that they were seeing certain beautiful points of
interest in England, Ireland and Scotland by striving to reach greater distances.
All participants kept a weekly journal of their activities and accomplishments toward reaching their increased activity
goals. At the end of the ten week session, the AID wellness committee helped everyone celebrate with a ‘walk and roll’
event in Elgin and Aurora. Local fire fighters and police officers joined the celebration to walk with clients, talk about the
importance of staying fit and healthy, and to distribute awards to clients for participation and achievement. During the
ten weeks, many clients increased their activity and lost weight!
SHOW YOU CARE KANE
Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers and community supporters who helped Show You Care Kane acquire nearly
35,000 petition signatures! We now have more than enough signatures to ask voters on March 18th, 2014, to create a
Developmental Disability Service Board that will help more than 1,200 Kane County children and adults who are on waiting
lists for services; and the nearly 40,000 others who will need services in the future.

Ride-In-Kane Fare Increase
A rate increase is necessary in order to continue to deliver the quality Ride-in-Kane services which have been provided to
persons with disabilities and the elderly in Kane County since 2008. An increase of $1.00 for a total of $4.00 per ride will

12 Days of Christmas Raffle Baskets - Monday, December 2nd
Get into the holiday spirit with the 12 Days of Christmas Raffle Baskets. Twelve themed baskets
will be raffled away each day for the twelve days before Christmas. Tickets for the 12 Days of
Christmas Raffle Baskets will go on sale November 21st. The first basket will be awarded on

Indoor Bean Bag Tournament - TBA - AID Elgin Training Center
Teams of two face off in a double-elimination style Bean Bag tournament at AID Elgin Training
Center; the top teams win CASH prizes. Recruit your neighborhood bean bag tossing super
star and enter the AID Indoor Bean Bag Tournament. Keep an eye on www.the-association.org

AID Telethon - Waubonsee Community College - March 15th
One of our biggest fundraising events is approaching and we could not be more excited!
Every year is a showcase of talent, heartwarming stories and pledges that help keep our
organization running to the best of it’s ability. The 2013 Telethon brought in over $86,000 in
pledges, thanks to the dedicated volunteers and hardworking employees of AID.
