Editors — Amy Walker & Oleta Parker September 2010 26TH ANNUAL WILD WEST FESTIVAL You will want to be here for the event of the year, September 18, 2010, from 8 AM to 4 PM!! There will be some new attractions, some from the past and new entertainment. There is something for everyone!! At the present time, the Chamber is taking entries for the young Cowboy/Cowgirl and best dressed Indian girl or boy. Ages range from three to ten years old. The winner of the Indian contest will be part of the authentic Indian wedding ceremony. Our cowboy will have pictures made with the cowboys on the seat of the chuck wagon. Be sure to get your little westerner entered for this fun event. There will be prizes and the sponsor of those prizes will be announced at the event. The Legends of Texas Gunfighters and Chief Standing Bear will be out front on the Tabernacle lawn. The cowboys will have their chuck wagon set up with a frontier woman teaching how meals were prepared on the trail and demonstrating the utensils she used. There will be talk of the trails around the area and history of events. Without a doubt, a gunfight or two will take place as disputes are bound to erupt. Chief Standing Bear, a Mescalero Apache and Chief of the United Native American Indians of Texas Tribe, will be on hand to officiate an authentic Native American Wedding. There will be a booth beside their tent for purchases of their items. According to the Chief, the goal of the tribe is to “bring people together, to teach the Native American culture, the customs and traditions of our people to our children. It is important to pass this on so these ways will not be forgotten.” Other entertainment includes Faye Rowell (our local Patsy Cline), Sayani (recording artists), Cassandra Matthews, Inside-Out Stomp Group, Real Family Fellowship and Peculiar (cont’d on Pg. 2) Page 2 Springtown Chamber Chatter FROM THE DESK OF… ANDREA HUNGERFORD SISD SUPERINTENDENT Good news comes to Springtown ISD! During the month of August, Springtown ISD felt elated after receiving several news announcements from various entities such as the Texas Education Agency, the State Board of Education, Claycomb Architect Associates, and the Center for Executive Leadership. Through the accountability division of the Texas Education Agency secure website, Springtown ISD learned that the District had received a Recognized rating. For the second time in a row, the District received the second highest TEA rating. Springtown Middle School and Springtown Intermediate School received a Recognized campus rating. The second announcement of good news came in the form of a letter from the State Board of Education. The letter announced that one of our parent volunteers had been named one of the top fourteen volunteers of the state of Texas. Springtown ISD is fortunate to have an awesome volunteer such as Marcia Garcia. Mrs. Garcia organized the opening of the Spirit Shop located at Porcupine Stadium. She also volunteers as the treasurer of several booster clubs and organizations. Marcia will be honored at the Texas Education Agency in Austin on September 24. Another big announcement came in the form of a phone call from Claycomb Architect Associations, architect and designers of Porcupine Stadium. The stadium received a design award for one of the best school designs in Texas. A picture of the stadium will be on display at the TASA/TASB Convention to be held in Houston. Most of these awards are presented to school buildings. This type of recognition is extremely rare for a stadium. A design award for Porcupine Stadium is another great way to promote the community of Springtown. Lastly, I was very excited to receive notification and acceptance into the Lamar University Superintendent Academy. The academy is part of the Center for Executive Leadership where twenty-four superintendents from across the state will collaborate and discuss various aspects of school business. I am looking forward to learning new ways to lead the District and working with fellow superintendents. I feel very fortunate to have a school board that supports my pursuit of education. We look forward to celebrating the great news and then focusing on our SISD goals for the new school year. 26th Annual Wild West Festival (cont'd) from Pg. 1 Ministry Puppet Shows, Northwest ATA Taekwondo, Mechanical bull, 4 in 1 QuadEurobungie jump, and many inflatables for the kids.
