Could social media have a positive effect on mental health? 07 Great British Dinner 11 65th anniversary amplifonLife l3 “ Amplifon changed my life Mike had struggled with his hearing since his teens, but a visit to Amplifon helped him to restore the balance – and change his life forever. Mike Hearing problems meant Mike failed his medical to get into the navy as a young man, and determined not to let his condition beat him, he underwent an operation to ease the problem. When doctors told him a hearing aid would only aggravate the condition in his right ear, he resigned himself to coping with just a device to solve the problem in his left ear. Following the conversation Mike struggled for a further 25 years. His poor hearing made socialising difficult, and he often had to rely on the help of his wife to keep him involved in conversations. “We’d go to a restaurant and my wife had to be my ears. I couldn’t hear anything that was going on, even when we were talking she had to do two lots of listening. She had to listen for herself and make sure I’d heard it and heard it correctly. It had an impact on all our friends and family, really, because they all had to make allowances for me.” ” REAL LIFE “It was more about my independence than anything else.” As time went on and Katherine moved into the workplace, hearing and participating in meetings became more and more difficult. Having a young son proved to be the catalyst Katherine needed to address her hearing problems. “My children and grandchildren would often stop and say ‘Did you get that, Dad?’ or ‘Did you get that, Grandad?’ They knew I was missing out on a good percentage of what was being said. It got more and more frustrating, and that’s when I decided to give Amplifon a shot.” A real revelation Amplifon fitted Mike with a BiCROS system, consisting of a receiver and transmitter for his right ear with a hearing aid for his left. He says it’s been a revelation. “If anyone asks me about going for hearing tests or tells me they’ve got hearing problems, I tell them to go to Amplifon instantly. It’s so friendly, so laid back. You are the thing that matters at Amplifon, and I would say to anybody: GO!” “ When I say it’s life changing it’s no joke, it is absolutely life changing.” Missing out on important things “My son, Edward, was having health issues, and I realised how much I was relying on having someone with me when I went to meetings and consultations with his doctors. I was missing out on a lot of important information I needed to know to help Edward. And more importantly, I was missing out on what he was saying to me too. Katherine Katherine had always struggled with her hearing. Her hearing loss was first picked up in her teens, but because the hearing aids she was given weren’t that user friendly, she’d only wear them during the day. Life at home became a bit of a struggle. Not being able to hear wasn’t just affecting me, it was having an impact on the people around me – and that was really upsetting.” Katherine visited Amplifon’s Wilmslow branch, where Hearing Aid Audiologist Lee made a suggestion which transformed Katherine’s views about her hearing. “Lee suggested putting the hearing aids in whilst my husband left the room. I thought ‘there’s no way I’ll be able to hear him speaking from another room’, but I could. It was a really emotional moment for both of us – we couldn’t believe the difference the Amplifon hearing aids made.” Katherine wears her new hearing aids all the time: “They’re much more comfortable and easy to adjust when I’m on the phone. I can hear what’s going on at work and play an active part in meetings. More importantly, I can hear everything my little boy says!” Enjoying life to the full Katherine now feels a bit cheated for all the special times she has missed out on as a result of not hearing properly. “It’s made life so much more enjoyable. I can do things other people in their thirties take for granted, like going out for a meal without having to worry about whether I’ll hear everything. Amplifon hasn’t just changed my life – it’s changed the life of my family, friends and work colleagues.” Further information To find out more about Katherine and Mike’s stories, watch their videos by visiting our website www.amplifon.co.uk/ customerstories or join the conversation on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/UKAmplifon Pop along to your local branch for afternoon tea We’ll be holding a series of afternoon teas at Amplifon branches across the country throughout the year. To quote the old British Telecom ads, “it’s good to talk”. And as technology advances, there are more and more ways to stay in touch and keep the conversation going with our friends, family and colleagues. Healthy Tweets As you ‘post’, ‘share’, ‘tweet’, ‘like’ and ‘favourite’ your way around social media do you ever wonder about the impact your online activity is having on your health? The good news is, it could be just as beneficial as a gossip over the garden fence. A recent study undertaken by the University of Exeter reported that as a result of training on how to use social media, elderly people found they felt more confident in their own abilities. They reported increased social activity and showed better performance on cognitive assessments. These increased feelings of self confidence as a result of the training were also indirectly associated with better mental health. Research on social connections Dr Thomas Morton, who led the research, says this increased sense of wellbeing is no surprise: “Human beings are social animals…we tend to do better when we have the ability to connect with others. Social connections are important to mental and physical health. People who are socially isolated are often more vulnerable to disease and decline.” While many would argue that there’s no substitute for a good old face to face chinwag, Dr Morton reckons advances in technology could mean that in time, communicating via social media is only one step away from being there. On the horizon “Social media and the internet are developing at such a rate that the sense of co-presence is something we can experience – on Skype you can English starter Potted Shrimps already chat to someone like they’re there, so as technology advances who knows what’s on the horizon?” Whilst the prospect of holding a virtual birthday party may be some way off, we all enjoy reconnecting with old friends and seeing photos on social media of family and friends celebrating special events even if we can’t be there ourselves. And according to research by the University of California San Diego, using social media to share happy events can help to make our friends happier too. It seems happiness can be spread between people who have direct, person to person contact, but psychologists looking at what we say in Facebook posts have found the same is true online. If you write a happy post, it encourages your friends and followers to create happy posts too. Staying in touch Social media might not improve your asthma or fix a broken leg, but staying in touch with friends and family and even making new connections online can help us to feel closer to others and happier in ourselves. What better reason to ‘get happy’ and join the conversation online? Ingredients • 110g/4oz butter • Good pinch of cayenne pepper • Good pinch of ground nutmeg • 570ml/1 pint picked shrimps • Seasoning Potted shellfish in a cayenne and nutmeg-flavoured butter is a surprisingly simple seafood starter.
