Sound Waves Page 1 of 2 September 2013 CHHA-NL WELCOMES AMY PARSONS Facilitator of Special Projects and Provincial Access We would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest employee, Amy Parsons. Amy is originally from Twillingate, and began studying Physical Education at Memorial University, eventually switching education paths to complete the Community Recreation Leadership program at College of the NorthAtlantic.Amy also works as a Recreation Therapy worker with Eastern Health on a part-time basis. She enjoys socializing with people, as well as anything that involves recreation. Audiologists Now Licensed In Newfoundland and Labrador Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists are now licensed in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador under the Health Professions Act. The Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals (NLCHP), an independent body established by legislation under the Health Professions Act (2010) is responsible for governing the regulation of seven health groups designated under the Act .These professions include: Acupuncturists, Audiologists, Speech Language Pathologists, Dental Hygienists, Medical Laboratory Technologists, Midwives, and Respiratory Therapists. The NLCHP is responsible for regulating all groups in the areas of registration, professional standards, quality assurance, and discipline. The NLCHP, with two members from each of the professional groups and six public representatives shall act to: • support the quality and safety of health services; • enhance public protection; • improve patient safety and strengthen the regulatory system, and • facilitate patient-centered interprofessional collaboration and care. Visit www.chha-nl.ca to sign up today Page 2 of 2 CRTC Ruling On 911 Text Changes “The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association is thrilled with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announcement of the enhancements to 911 services that will enable Canadians who have hearing loss or speech impediments to communicate with 911 call centers via text message...as the service becomes available in different municipalities, Canadians with hearing loss or speech impediments must register their mobile phone number with their wireless service provider, and ensure that they have a compatible mobile phone”. Many thanks to guest judges: Mitch Colbourne, 99.1 HITS FM, Chris Murphy, Manger, Eastern Health Audiology, Lily Cole, President, NLTA. Special guests: scorekeeper, Joanne McNeil, teacher at Gonzaga High School; MC Bob Young, President of CHHA-NL; speaker Lynda Cobb, former chair of the Parents Resource Group; and Father Bill Browne also participated in this year’s event.
