Southern California’s confident, down-to-earth spa girls are taking chances,
touching lives and achieving success. And they’re having a great time doing it.
When you’re on a carnival ride, you never
quite know what’s going to happen next. It
might be a dip, a swerve or a spin. The ride is fun,
exhilarating and even a little bit scary. Being a
BeautiControl Independent Consultant is a lot
like a carnival ride: You never know who you’re
going to meet next, or what exciting things are
around the next bend.
In early 2004, Independent Senior Executive
Director Michelle Jones was new in Memphis,
Tennessee. She was also reeling from a divorce
and looking for a fresh career start. “My
ex-husband and I were both complete
workaholics, which led to our divorce. I had
spent 17 years working in retail. I made great
money, but had no time or freedom. At the
age of 34, I was all alone and thinking, ‘I have
to change something.’ I knew I needed a new
career, one that would be better for family.”
When the one person she knew in Memphis
invited Michelle to a spa so that the Hostess
could receive her gifts, Michelle put up some
brief resistance before agreeing to go. Though
she couldn’t have known it at the time, it was a
major turning point.

I just remember how relaxed and wonderful I

spa thing to make some new friends. I instantly
fell in love with all the treatments. I don’t

little more resistance. In the beginning, she was
adamant about just being into the products,
not the opportunity. But attending BeautiU
changed her mind, not to mention her life’s
course.
“At BeautiU I saw all these wonderful women
who appeared to enjoy what they did and had
such excitement and wonderful stories of how
their lives had been enriched. As I sat there that
day, I started to wonder if maybe I could do this.
I was excited but scared. I thought maybe
I could do it, but I thought of the trainers and
helpers as maybe being better, or having
different skills than I did.”
That same day, despite her reservations,
Michelle was touched by Independent
Senior National Executive Director Blair
Billings’ invitation to her own team’s monthly
celebration. Blair’s willingness to share her
success convinced Michelle that she could do
this business, too. “This is so different from
what the traditional work force does. Most of
us feel guarded and do not share our secrets
of success at a traditional job for fear of losing
that job. At BeautiControl, we can all have the
success we want.”
So Michelle got going on her spas, which
didn’t go so well at first. But she learned some
invaluable lessons. “Holding my first spas was
terrifying. I always tell new spa girls that if you’re
not afraid, you’re not normal! My first spa was
only $12. Why? Because I didn’t listen to those
who walked before me. I showed every single
product, I talked too much and I treated it like
a class instead of a relaxing spa experience. My
second spa was $540. Why? I listened to those
who walked before me. I kept the spa to about
an hour, and I showed what’s in the BeautiCase
plus a few of my favorites. I left them all wanting
more and so excited to book their own spas.”
With practice, consistency and openmindedness, Michelle was building a successful
business just by following the BeautiControl
path. Surprisingly, all this happened in spite of
the fact that she never intended to build a team.
It seemed like a lot of work, and Michelle wasn’t
interested in being anyone’s boss. Pretty soon,
though, it dawned on her that she wasn’t in that
cutthroat corporate world anymore, and that
her old hangups and fears no longer applied.
“What I learned very quickly was to get over
myself, understand that this was something
new and different, and that I would make
mistakes and that was okay. I would have to
ask for help and others would not judge me
for that. I saw that everyone can be successful
with BeautiControl. You simply have to follow
the steps BeautiControl has created for us, use
empowerU and attend monthly meetings. And
going to Celebration is a MUST!”
When Michelle decided to move her
growing enterprise to Southern California,
she found herself facing a dilemma: “I was told
that you couldn’t do this business in Southern
California, that it just wouldn’t work in that
market. I was baffled!”
She took the risk anyway and moved to
the Los Angeles area. If any woman could
be successful with BeautiControl, Michelle
reasoned, then any place could be successful
as well. She was pleased to discover that with
the right attitude, the market in Southern
California was as warm and welcoming as the
weather. Her business is booming, her team
is growing and promoting and there are 415
Consultants on her personal team as of press
time. And none of this could have happened
without strong, optimistic leaders. The nine
Directors on Michelle’s team know that working
and leading together begins with embracing
unlimited possibilities, and then modeling that
optimism for all their Consultants.
Michelle says knowingly, “It truly is a mindset.
If you think you can’t get spas, you’re not going
to get them. Our team’s mindset is that there’s

Independent Director Sandy Bruce cringes
when she remembers her first spa, which she
held with family members. “Of course I was
trying to overdo everything, and I felt I had
to tell them everything about every product.
I had them so confused!” Thank goodness
Sandy had the experience of fellow spa girls,
like longtime friend Michelle Jones, to lean
on. “I learned to focus on the relaxing part of
the spa. Things work better when you relax
yourself, too.”
Sandy didn’t just learn to relax at spas,
either. BeautiControl has helped her learn
the value of letting go in other areas of life as
well. “There are so many things that we put
between ourselves and our dreams. At first
my biggest challenge was childcare. I had
to realize that just because my mom or my
in-laws or even my husband don’t do things
exactly like I do doesn’t mean that it’s wrong.
Once I figured out that I was always coming
home to very happy children, I just had to
get over myself!”
Sandy echoes her friend Michelle when
she talks about getting over herself. One
of the least mentioned—but perhaps most
valuable—aspects of BeautiControl is
the sharing of advice and wisdom among
women. Who knows more about effectively
balancing the demands of life and business
than a dear friend and fellow spa girl? Sandy
was surprised and delighted to find that with
BeautiControl, her personal, professional
and financial growth could happen
simultaneously.
At spas, Sandy loves to share her dream
bag, a small bag filled with symbols of the
freedom she’s enjoying with BeautiControl.
A watch, to symbolize the gift of time, and
the freedom to set her own schedule. Fake
$1000 bills, as symbols of the serious money
she’s earning.
“It allows me to talk to them without calling
them out, and it also shows potential new spa
girls that there is an easy way to talk about
the benefits of the opportunity without
being too forward. I am easy to duplicate.”
Sandy is also easy to relate to. “My
approach is to make sure they see that I do
this to help take care of my family. I want
them to know that I am not perfect. Often
I make mistakes, or just plain act silly. I want
them to see that I am a real person, just like
they are!”
Recruiting is even more of a breeze for
Sandy with the Freedom Plan. “I try to focus
new team members on the $100 bonus for
promoting to VIP. That influences them to
book their first spa sooner rather than later.
And once a new person has their first spa
and they see how easy it is, they’re hooked.”
Sandy Bruce is hooked on the
BeautiControl ride herself, and she’s looking
forward to promoting Directors. “Blair
Billings once told me that this business is
like a Ferris wheel: It keeps going and it’s
always fun! Sometimes you have ups and
sometimes you have downs, but you keep
going and stay consistent, and if you do that
you’ll always have an enjoyable ride!”

After working as a teacher for seven
years, Independent Director Lisa Mazziotta
knew she didn’t want to go back to that job
after having children. “Too much work and
not enough pay,” she says. The BeautiControl
opportunity was the perfect option for
her. “I loved the idea of pampering women
and making them feel amazing. I also love
taking care of myself and fell in love with the
products.” It was easy to get involved with
a product she believed in. But that doesn’t
mean she didn’t have challenges on the ride
to Directorship.
“I was a stay-at-home mom and was not
around a lot of people. I had to force myself
to get out and talk to people about spa and
our amazing products. I think the biggest
difference was when I learned that no matter
where you are, talk to everyone. At the grocery
store, the gas station or the bank, find a way
to start the conversation so they ask what
you do. At that point, give your ‘30-second
commercial.’ Who says no to a girls’ night of
pampering and relaxation in the comfort of
your own home?”
Lisa is also committed to consistency in
spa bookings. “I try never to walk away from a
spa without booking at least 2 to 3 more spas.
That’s how you keep your business consistent.”
Like the other women on Michelle’s team,
Lisa confidently declares that her future will be
a success. “My ongoing challenge is to continue
to build a strong enough team so that when I
start promoting out Directors in the next few
months, my team will still be strong and my
commissions will stay consistent.”
So what has given Lisa the confidence to
connect with others while achieving her own
success? She credits the values her parents
passed on to her, which she wants to pass on
to her children in turn. “My parents taught me
to be a kind, loving, caring, generous person.
Because of these qualities I want to try and
connect with everyone I come in contact with
in hopes that I can help better someone’s life.
You never know who needs a job, some extra
money, some empowerment to make their
own dreams come true, or just some love and
pampering.”

an abundance of people out there who want
to book spas with us. We can book office
spas every day. It’s so easy. We do what Vice
President of Sales José Luis suggests, which is
to start backwards. Decide what your sales are
going to be first, and then fill in your calendar
with the number of spas you need to do that.
Then keep going, with an attitude of, “Let’s see
how many I can get!”
About 6 months after she got started,
Michelle brought her friend Sandy Bruce on
board the ride. “Sandy and I used to work 50plus hours a week together in retail, and we
had to miss so many things. She was one of
my employees and I remember hating when
it came time to do her annual review. She
was such a great asset to the company we
worked for, but due to budget cuts I was only
able to give her a small raise. When I realized
BeautiControl could be my answer to time and
financial freedom, I had to share with my dear
friend Sandy.”
Although Sandy wasn’t enthusiastic about
the opportunity at first, Michelle’s progress
with BeautiControl soon got her attention.
Michelle says, “When I started to have some
small successes, it became more real for Sandy.
She was now a stay-at-home mom struggling to
make ends meet. I remember the day she called
and said, ‘Okay, do you think I can really do this?’
Of course my answer was, ‘YES, YES, YES!’”
Michelle is thrilled to report that Sandy
qualified for the Mustang, and chose the
$20,000 check. “A stay-at-home mom working
part-time hours receiving a $20,000 check—
where else could this happen?” Michelle
herself is no stranger to the amazing rewards
BeautiControl offers. She giddily recalls one
month when she earned the Lexus, $14,000
in commissions, $3,000 in personal sales and
a diamond ring for being in the top 10 of
BeautiControl. Michelle and Sandy no longer
have to choose between financial freedom and
the freedom to enjoy life on their own terms.
“Now we live in ‘Spa-Land,’ as we like to call
it!” laughs Michelle.
Michelle Jones absolutely loves what she
does and she’s still a gutsy go-getter. But
there’s no need for workaholism here. With
everything that she’s doing, the principles of
Michelle’s success are actually very simple.
“There’s nothing hard about what we do. It’s
just consistency. And remember, if one other
person has done it, then so can you. Dreams
really can come true, for anyone!”

to feelings that you don’t deserve success. Identify these negative
messages and write them down, then toss out the page.
Accept yourself unconditionally
Accept yourself, your past and your circumstances exactly as they are,
without thinking of them as ‘bad.’ Everything in your life can be learned
from. And remember that no one is perfect. Even the most confident
people have insecurities.
Identify your successes and strengths
Discover the things at which you excel, and then focus on your
talents. When you’re following your passion, not only will it have a
therapeutic effect, but you’ll feel unique and accomplished, which will
build your self-confidence.

Instead of loathing and belittling yourself, project your strengths and your

Lauren Cagle, Independent Director
Last year, Independent Freedom Director
Lauren Cagle found herself on an airplane,
traveling home to Bakersfield, Ca. from a visit
to her ailing father. She was seven months
pregnant with daughter Hannah at the time,
and admits that she’s not too comfortable
with fl ying as it is. Stuck in the middle row
on a fi ve-hour plane ride, Lauren was feeling
pretty miserable until, serendipitously, Senior
National Executive Director Blair Billings
sat down next to her.
“This very gentle woman talked to me
and calmed my anxious mind. She was so
pleasant and friendly, and she told me about
her business, how she pampers women and
teaches them to relax. She helped me to
relax that day! It was a total God deal.”
Lauren, who is a nurse, a wife and a busy
mother of four, had already walked through
much tougher days than that one on the
airplane. In March 2008, when Lauren was
six months pregnant with her third child, she
awakened one morning to every mother’s
worst nightmare. Her first son, Brandon, had
passed away during the night. “Brandon was
a healthy 17-month-old boy who just went
to sleep and never woke up,” Lauren shares.
The diagnosis? Sudden Unexplained Death
in Childhood (or SUDC), about which very
little is known.
Even in her own despair, Lauren instinctively
opened her heart and offered her support to
others who had experienced the same tragedy,
by raising funds for SUDC research.
After their meeting on the plane, Blair
passed Lauren’s contact information on to
Independent Senior Executive Director
Michelle Jones, and Michelle drove fi ve
hours round trip to do a spa for Lauren. “She
took a chance on me,” Lauren says earnestly.
“I don’t believe in coincidences. I didn’t know
what this BeautiControl thing was, exactly,
but I invited some friends over to check it
out, because Michelle was willing to drive
so far. I had a really good feeling about it,
almost from the very beginning.”
The ability to trust her unfolding journey
has paid handsomely for Lauren, who has
promoted to Director within just a few months
of diving into her business. In addition to her
family obligations and her job as a nurse,
Lauren is booking spas consistently and
attracting new recruits with her warmth and
kindness.
“I want to change someone’s life like Blair
and Michelle changed mine. The spa girls
I’ve recruited, I’ve been mentoring them,
making little spa starter kits for them with
trays, washcloths and all the little things you
need. I try to make myself a resource for
them. My attitude, since I’m so new at this is,
‘Hey, I don’t have all the answers, but here’s
what I do know.’ I’m sharing what works.”
