Welcome to the 2012 Wisconsin
State Music Conference!
We know that music is now central to the curriculum in
many districts. Quality music teaching and learning bring
families to school districts that value the arts and creative
curriculum work. Our 2012 conference will continue to
provide some of the finest professional development
opportunities offered in the country.
Our theme this year is “Great Music, Great Minds.” We know that music study,
which begins in early childhood and lasts throughout adulthood, has a tremendous
impact on the development of the brain, lasting love for the art and opportunities
to enrich all learning.

state superintendent of public instruction and music educator present the keynote
address at the general session. Her experience as a musician and teacher continues
to make her a Wisconsin expert on the power of music study.

The offical conference attendee nametag admits attendees to 2012 Wisconsin
State Music Conference sessions, exhibits and concerts held within Monona Terrace
Convention Center, except the WSMA High School State Honors Jazz Ensemble
concert. Be sure you have it with you at all times.
Nametags are not valid for entry into the WSMA High School State Honors
Orchestra & Band, WSMA High School State Honors Treble Choir & Mixed Choir
or the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Choir, Orchestra & Band concerts.
Tickets must be purchased for each of these concert events.

Need help? Staff and volunteers are available to help at Monona Terrace in
Conference Headquarters, Pre-Paid Registration and On-Site Registration, all
located in the Grand Terrace on Level 4.

Parking and Shuttles
Take advantage of free parking in the
South Lot of Alliant Energy Center on
Thursday and Friday, October 25 & 26,
located across from the Sheraton
Madison Hotel and just a mile from
Monona Terrace.
Free shuttle buses will travel continuously
between the South Lot of Alliant Energy
Center and Monona Terrace approximately every 30 minutes beginning at 7:00 am
on Thursday and 7:30 am on Friday.
City of Madison parking is also available
at Monona Terrace and at several parking
ramps close by for a charge.

Shuttles to WSMA High
School Honors Concerts
On Thursday, October 25, the free
Lamers shuttles will offer exclusive
express service between Monona
Terrace and Overture Hall, beginning
one hour prior to each of the WSMA
High School State Honors concerts.
Shuttles will return riders to Alliant
Energy Center and conference hotels
after each concert. Seating is limited.

Your paid conference registration
qualifies you for a free ticket (available

WSMA High School State Honors Jazz

Tickets are also required for all other
WSMA State Honors concerts. During
the conference, tickets for High School
State Honors concerts held at Overture
Center can only be purchased at the
Overture Center Box Office,
201 State Street.
Tickets for the Middle Level State
Honors concert may be purchased at
Conference Headquarters during the
conference. Tickets will also be available
for purchase one hour prior to the concert
at the Marriott Madison West.

The exhibit portion of this year’s
conference will again make use of
expanded space. All commercial
exhibits will be in the main exhibit
hall on the first floor, while colleges,
universities and non-profit organizations
will be located in both the main exhibit
hall and near the registration area in the
Capitol Promenade on the fourth floor
of Monona Terrace.
Every year more than 100 exhibitors
from around the country participate in
our conference for a chance to meet
Wisconsin music educators and present
useful products, services and opportunities. We’re making it easier than ever
for you to visit the exhibits by providing
exclusive exhibit times when no sessions or performances are scheduled.

WSMA Exemplary
Soloist Recital
A recital featuring outstanding young
soloists from middle and high schools
will take place in the Lecture Hall on
Friday at 1:00 pm. During the 2012
WSMA State Solo & Ensemble Festivals,
adjudicators at the 10 festival sites identified more than 400 students who
received Exemplary Soloist Certificates.
After a careful screening process, WSMA
is pleased to present these extraordinary
soloists, all of whom are current students
in WSMA-member schools, in a combined recital. Don’t miss your chance to
hear the talents of these exceptional

New and experienced adjudicators are
encouraged to sharpen their judging
skills for the 2012-13 WSMA Festival
season. Revised adjudicator forms,
materials and procedures will be the
focus of this session. This orientation
session qualifies adjudicators as “rubric
approved” and renews the four-year
recertification requirement for all WSMA
District Solo & Ensemble adjudicators.
Wisconsin Teaching and
Music Standards
WMEA has been enriching professional
development of music educators for
years, but we’ve taken it a step further
by identifying the Wisconsin State
Teaching Standards and Wisconsin Music
Standards that apply to each conference
session! Music educators will gain professional growth, inspiration, knowledge
and new skills at this year’s event.
Treat yourself to an unforgettable evening
of UW’s premier a cappella ensembles,
including Tangled Up In Blue, MadHatters
and Redefined. Each group presents its
own selection of unique vocal arrangements, enlightening audiences with
spectacular singing talent. This special
free concert is open to the public and
also marks the beginning of the 2012
Wisconsin State Music Conference.
Wisconsin State Teaching

Teachers in Wisconsin will:

a discussion on arranging and maintaining or developing quality groups like
these within and outside the school day.

Carthage is a private college of the liberal arts and
sciences that was founded in 1847, and is affiliated with
the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Situated
midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, Carthage’s
picturesque campus on the Lake Michigan shore is
home to 2,500 full-time and 900 part-time students.
Carthage awards the Bachelor of Arts degree with
majors in more than 40 subject areas, and the Master
of Education degree. The Carthage faculty comprises
more than 100 scholars, 90 percent of whom hold the
doctorate or other terminal degree.

focusing on identification of musically
gifted middle school students and programming in musical composition utilizing traditional and digital music production tools for these students. The project was part of a DPI grant for musically
gifted students. In this grant, students,
music teacher and mentor/composer
formed an online learning community
through a WIKI where students submitted work digitally and received feedback from the composer/mentor, the
music teacher and their peers.

share an overview of the Dayton
Philharmonic Orchestra’s SPARK (School
Partners with Artists Reaching Kids)
program, an exciting opportunity connecting musical concepts with Ohio’s
education standards in science, language arts, math, social studies and history. Now in its 15th year, the SPARK
program engages students in dramatic
and measurable ways. The program is an
innovative arts partnership integrating
music into kindergarten through fifth
grade classrooms, providing rewarding
experiences for both the students and
the visiting professional musicians.
Orchestral musicians, conductors and
classroom teachers work together in six
in-class sessions, culminating in a concert where children are able to observe
“their” musicians on stage.

bodies and minds to re-focus and rejuvenate. Singers will return to their
music with better mental and vocal
focus, ready to excel! Read through
recommended choral selections interspersed with invigorating, quick and
easy activities designed for use while
directing and teaching. This session is
particularly geared toward middle
school singers, although the techniques
and activities can be applied to all ages.
Jazz activities include singing a blues
melody, movement, scatting and playing classroom percussion and xylophones. Review of music selection and
children’s jazz books to be used as
classroom tools will be discussed. All
activities learned will culminate in a
hands-on interactive music story for all
to participate and enjoy! Teachers will
