SUNBURST BRAIN CAMP 2016
Reisydah binti Haji Abdul Hamid, BE 12
The Sunburst Brain Camp is an educational science programme jointly organised by the Singapore Technologies Endowment Programme (STEP) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) which aims to inspire and educate secondary and tertiary students
concerning brain research and the understanding of brain functions and diseases as well as to foster interaction and friendship between students from ASEAN countries, India, Japan, Sri Lanka and
South Korea.
When students Reisydah binti Haji
Abdul Hamid of BE 12, Nor Izzatul
Afiqah binti Yusof, of BE 9, Muhammad Arif bin Kamal Hisham of BE 7
and Awangku Abdul Hadi bin Pengiran Hamdillah of BE 13 were told that
they had been chosen to represent
Brunei during the programme held
from 5th to 11th June they, along with
their families, were elated. However,
the participants admitted that with this
opportunity, came an alarming sense
of responsibility.
With less than three months to prepare, the students had to work quickly
to complete two tasks given to them
by the STEP-NUS committee before
flying off to Singapore: a research
paper on Parkinson‟s disease – a progressive degenerative neurological
disease which affects body movement
– and a presentationbased on their
research paper.
Participants along with Cikgu Ilzam binti Zainulabidin (3rd from left) prior to departure
Taken under the wing of Cikgu Ilzam binti Zainulabidin, the head of Biology, the students acquired the necessary skills for producing
a research paper such as attaining information from reliable sources and how to properly reference them. These were important aspects in producing their research paper because the participants felt that one of the biggest problems was plagiarism.
Regarding the assigned topic, the participants were surprised at the lack of awareness among locals concerning this problem even
though Parkinson‟s disease is a very prominent disease internationally. Therefore, in their efforts to raise awareness of the disease,
the participants conducted a survey to find out how many locals knew of the disease and the extent of their knowledge. The survey
was distributed to PTES students along with a pamphlet containing information on Parkinson‟s disease (which was also the work of
the participants) and the results were included in the research paper.
The proud participants submitted the final version of their research paper – entitled, „Pinning Down Parkinson’s Disease‟ – on 18th
April 2016 and almost immediately had to work on their research paper presentation. Although they got off to a bumpy start, the participants were able to produce a worthy presentation and had multiple dry-runs with their mentor, Cikgu Ilzam, as well as Deputy
Principal Academic Cikgu Tutty Hryneeita binti Abdul Latip, in order to achieve a smooth presentation style.
To prepare them for the Sunburst Brain Camp, the participants attended a sharing session at PTE Meragang where they received valuable advice from the previous Brunei delegates. Participants also received a motivational talk by PTES counsellor, Rosni binti Haji
Abdul Rahman, on discipline, matters related to MIB, student communication and interaction skills as well as how to inculcate a positive attitude. Additionally, Ustaz Haji Zulkiflee bin Haji Jaili of Jabatan Pengajian Islam PTES gave participants a religious talk on
Solat Jama’ and Qasar and fasting during Ramadhan as a musafir.

SUNBURST BRAIN CAMP 2016
At a ceremony held shortly before leaving for Singapore, the parents of the participants had to sign an agreement to show that they
gave their consent to let their respective sons and daughters take part in the Sunburst Brain Camp. In addition, this ceremony gave the
participants the chance to carry out their presentation in front of their parents, the Principal and Deputy Principals as well as two representatives of the Academic Unit at the MOE – Dayang Hajah Lena binti Mohammad Hassan, the Head of the Academic Unit and
Encik Abdul Wahib bin Haji Abdul Hamid, a Special Duties Officer Grade I who acted as the liaison officer in charge of the Brunei
team. (See Pulse #5 for the full Sunburst Brain Camp Diary.)

The Young Social Entrepreneur

on 11th June 2016.
The JA was a 12-session programme during which we learnt
how to set up a company and promote its products. We were competing with all the other sixth form
colleges in Brunei for the chance to
go to Tokyo to compete with
schools from abroad.
The product that our company
chose to promote was drawstring
bags. These are bags with very
strong string straps which are very
convenient for those who do not
like zips on their bags. Our company mission is, „With skills, we can

vision is to become Brunei‟s number one manufacturers of creative products.
We will be winding up our company towards the end of September 2016. Twenty per cent of our profits will be given to SMARTER
Brunei (Society for the Management of Autistic Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources, Brunei Darussalam) as part of
our continued support for this organisation and because they are currently in need of funding. It is hoped that this donation will go
some way towards relieving their financial burden.
To help us achieve this objective, we hope that all staff and students of PTES will try to purchase our drawstring bags.

KOREAN CULTURE CLUB INTER-HOUSE
Norerni Irwani binti Mohd. Niah, BE 11
The Korean Culture Club sprang into life again with a bang when they organised an inter-house competition at their
first meeting after the Hari Raya break.
The competition was held on the 20th July 2016 which was the normal co-curricular session for the Korean Culture
Club. The competition was organised by the main (lower sixth) committee members who were keen to make the day a
success. To ensure the success of the competition, the selected committee members began planning this event with the
help of the head teacher-in-charge of the Korean Culture Club before the holidays.
The competition was open to every student at Pusat Tingkatan Enam Sengkurong. The participants were then divided
into four teams (Blue, Green, Red and Yellow) according to their houses. The objective of the competition was to test
the participants on their knowledge of a variety of topics relating to Korea. The quiz included questions on the history
of Korea, Korean culture as
well as the modern civilization of Korea which included questions on Korean
Pop, Korean Drama and
Korean variety shows.
During the competition,
points were awarded to the
team that answered the
questions correctly. Points
earned for each category
were then added up to give
an overall mark for each
team at the end of the competition. The winning team
was therefore the one with
the most points. The competition ran smoothly and ended approximately at 4:30
p.m.
Students poised to answer the next question
The results were as follows:
1. Blue House
2. Green House
3. Yellow House
4. Red House
We are grateful to all the students who participated actively on that day and made the event a great success. We would
also like to thank all the teachers (Ms Foo Chui Chen , Head of the Korean Club; Ms Yeo Chin Boon ,Green House;
Ms Peng Pei Pei, Blue House; Ms Nur Qistina binti Hj Abdul Latif, Red House and Ms Lailatul Norazimah binti Hj
Hussain,Yellow House) who helped to supervise the event and ensured that it ran smoothly.

WASTE TO ART—A FISH CALLED SIAKAP
The foyer of the Administration Block is slowly gaining a reputation for its role as an exhibition hall for the high quality artwork
that is consistently being produced by PTES Art and Design
Technology students.
When asked whether they thought that there should be more female artists, Nur Syahindah contested this very notion: „There are
many female artists, it's just that they lack the recognition that
male artists get,‟ she asserted. In similar vein, Nurul Aqilah pointed to people‟s perceptions of female artists, saying: „Most people

she saw it as a challenge, „To see whether or not we were able to
do a good job‟ while for Nurul Aqilah it was also about doing
something that she had never done before, „I wanted to try a new
experience.‟
When asked to explain their decision to make a fish, Nurul
Aqilah revealed that this was to convey a powerful message.
Keen to reinforce this point, Nur Syahindah explained their idea
in more detail: „The fish represents industrialisation. As industries
grow, this brings benefits to humans. However, these benefits
very often come with a few drawbacks. The drawback of industrialisation is that it produces a lot of waste. We therefore chose to
use this fish to represent how the waste created eventually affects
the lives of fish as most industrial waste is thrown carelessly into
rivers.‟
While Nurul Aqilah does not have one favourite artist – „I love all
artists, both foreign and local,‟ she admitted – Nur Syahindah had
no hesitation in naming Van Gogh as the artist she most admires.
However, she was quick to dispel the idea that Siakap, or any of
her other artwork, has been influenced by him: „In general, my
artwork has been a matter of trial and error using techniques from

Nia was of a similar opinion when she stated: „We should encourage them by telling girls they can think just as well, if not better,
than male artists.‟
Disagreeing slightly with her friends, Nur Basyirah had this to

Sa‟adatul Hanan was eager to point out the significance of the

the people what will happen if we don‟t recycle now. If we don‟t
recycle now, then there won‟t be any trees in this world and without trees we won‟t have enough oxygen to breathe.‟
Dk Amal Izzah Billah added that people should look at the symbolism of the gas mask attached to the tree for a proper understanding of this piece of work: „I suggested that they attached a
self-made gas mask to the tree to convey the message that the air
is polluted and not safe for us to breathe.‟
