I started my first online business in 1990 and have been making money online month after month, each and every month since then. I've also watched the Internet 'Gold Rush' evolve and witnessed the hype that virtually insures 'going bust' online. If you are in business online or planning on going into business online, you must know one thing - The Internet has not changed the Basics of Business! The Internet is a communications tool, and that's all it is. Communication Rules! Consider how the ability to get information to the public has changed the way businesses advertise: The printing press gave merchants the ability to get information about their products and services to more prospects. Radio and television gave merchants the ability to get information about their products and services to more prospects. The Internet gives merchants the ability to get information about their products and services to more prospects. Today, you will find Internet links along with the in-print and radio/TV ads! The 'key words' remain the same - Information about Products and Services. But when the Internet appeared, it didn't take long for someone to shout 'Gold Rush'! Let's look at a bit of history. The California Gold Rush In January of 1848, James Marshall and a group of around twenty men were building a sawmill to provide lumber for John Sutter's growing ranch in a remote outpost in California. The sawmill was nearly complete when something on the ground caught Marshall's eye: "I reached my hand down and picked it up; it made my heart thump, for I was certain it was gold. The piece was about half the size and shape of a pea. Then I saw another." That event was the beginning of the California Gold Rush, but Marshall's discovery did not 'launch' the Gold Rush. The news did spread, but for most that heard, it was just another 'wild west' story too unlikely to be true. Sam Brannan, a San Francisco merchant heard about the gold at Sutter's mill and came up with a Business Plan. He ran through the streets of San Francisco announcing Marshall's discovery with 'proof in hand, a bottle of gold dust. It was a masterstroke of marketing that made Brannan rich - and Sam Brannan never mined for gold! Just before he began shouting 'California Gold' in the streets of San Francisco, Brannan purchased every pick axe, pan and shovel in the region. A metal pan that sold for twenty cents prior to his announcement was now available from Brannan for fifteen dollars. In just nine weeks he made thirty-six thousand dollars - - With a Marketing Plan and a Product that was In Demand! Very few struck it rich with pick and shovel! History informs us that the vast majority of those that joined the California Gold Rush in the hopes if instant wealth went bust. Most ended up going back to work in the skill or trade they brought with them. In less than a year, the surface gold was nearly gone. The majority of the California gold remaining was either underground or under water. Those that made money mining gold were business men with the investment resources and business management skills necessary to purchase the equipment and hire the men needed to extract gold from the hills and rivers. Business was good in California, but not in the goldfields! Men and women that were able to spot a product or service need and devise a marketing plan to meet that need did very well during the gold rush. Levi Strauss, operator of a prosperous dry good business added a metal rivet to the sturdy canvas pants and changed the course of American fashion. Henry Wells and William Fargo began providing secure and honest banking and transportation to the area. Their company, Wells Fargo, became a giant in the banking industry. Women washing clothes, cooking meals and providing other 'necessities' to the miners typically made hundreds of times the income that their customers, those with 'pick and shovel' were making! In short - the vast majority of those that joined the California Gold Rush in the hopes in instant riches went bust, while those that were able to spot a business opportunity and put together a simple marketing plan with a product or service that was in demand did very well. Is there a lesson to be learned here? The Internet Gold Rush The 'Internet' first appeared as the U.S. Department of Defense ARPANET in 1969 linking the University of California at Los Angeles, SRI (in Stanford), University of California at Santa Barbara, and University of Utah. ARPANET was designed for transferring library information. The first email program was created by Ray Tomlinson of BBN in 1972. The early Internet was used by computer experts, engineers, scientists, and librarians, and there was nothing friendly about it. All that was about to change! Bill Gates' Windows 1.0 hit the store shelves in November 1985. The Windows software is a Graphics User Interface (GUI) that allowed the average computer user to get 'online' without having to understand complicated command line coding. It was not just Windows! Bill Gates launched a well-devised Marketing Plan with Windows as the first 'pick and shovel'. Along with Windows, Bill launched Microsoft's entry into the browser, server, and Internet Service Provider market. Those resources gave anyone with a computer and an Internet connection the ability to get connected to the entire world! The Internet of today provides merchants with the ability to communicate - to advertise and sell products and services to the entire world at a fraction of the cost of conventional advertising. Those that are not promoting their business online are not effectively competing. That's the 'nature of the beast' - it's a fact of life! The Internet has not changed the Basics of Business Successful business begins with a product (or service) that is in demand. There is no magic here. Shoppers are still looking for value! Your product must be competitive; it must be of equal or better quality than other products on the market, and it must cost less than comparable products. You must be able to get your product to the customer, and you can't do that without advertising. The 'Golden Rule' in business is - - - Advertise or Die! And that means an Advertising Budget! Somewhere along the line, someone shouted 'Gold'! The silly idea that anyone could start up a business and make money online without a product or service and without an advertising budget began to appear shortly after Windows was released. It started with the Network Marketing or MLM concept, and it's still getting thousands of folks into investing their hard earned money into 'programs' that virtually insure failure. Take a look at the following ad: Amazing Income Opportunity! Join McDonalds today and retire in less than a year! That's right, just join McDonalds today, get three other folks to join McDonalds and your membership will be paid for. When those three that you got to join get three other folks to join McDonalds, you'll be on your way to unheard of wealth! Don't worry about selling burgers! Just get others to join! Sound kind of fishy? Okay, just change the word 'McDonalds' to 'my program' and read your email or start searching online for home based businesses! Don't bite on any of that hype - it's all Fools Gold! Don't get me wrong; Network Marketing is a great way to get products and services to the consumer. In fact, more products and services are distributed through Network Marketing in Japan than in any other nation on earth! Network Marketing gives folks that do not have tons of startup money an opportunity to get into business with very little initial investment. A good Network Marketing or affiliate company will provide a replicated product web site for distributors and most will handle all the shipping. If you want to become successful in online business, you must resign yourself to the fact that you will be selling products or services. Selecting the company with product or service that's right for you is very simple. Back to the Basics Step One - Think Product Ask yourself this one question; "Can I make a good income selling the product"? See What MAX Members Are Involved In Compare the product that you are considering with similar products both online and locally. The product you're considering must be comparable, preferably better in both quality and price than your competition. If you find similar products available for less, look elsewhere. Do NOT consider enrolling other distributors into your product selection. If you can't earn an income selling the product, neither can your distributors and you'll all go bust! Step Two - Visit the Company Web Site Most online businesses provide replicated web sites for their distributors. That's great because you won't have to spend a ton of money to have someone do it for you! But the web site provided by the company you're considering is the one you'll be 'stuck with' as a distributor, so be very 'picky' about what you'll get. Do You Smell a Hot Apple Pie? No black mess soy/veg candles. Let's get your success started today! http://SuccessByCandlelight.com The main page must be a product sales site! If the affiliate link provided by the company leads directly to an 'income opportunity' page, click off immediately. The FTC requires a product sales page first and with 'minor' links to the business opportunity. Look for company contact information before the fold on the main page. "Before the fold" means that you must see the company contact information or a link directly to that information without having to move your mouse. For US businesses, this can be an email link, but you must be able to find the physical and mailing address easily. If you will be doing business worldwide, that information link must be before the fold. If you do not see the company contact information on the main page, look elsewhere. Look for the Product Sales Page. The company web site must provide a means for your customers to purchase the product without hearing one word about marketing - period! If your customers are going to be contacted with 'business opportunity' information automatically, find another company. Introducing The Only Prepaid Cellphone Service I Know That Treats You First Class. http://hop2url.com/1stClass Step Three - Initiate Contact Send an email to the company or the representative that contacted you and ask them a simple question. If the email bounces or you do not receive a reply within a day or two, look elsewhere. If you're considering an affiliate or Network Marketing company, you will probably be contacted by a distributor. Listen carefully to the 'sales pitch' that he or she gives. If they tell you how great the product is, how well it sells and how the customers love it, you're on the right track. If they begin with a pitch about how easy it is to enroll others, ask them not to contact you again. Ask your contact what training is available. Network Marketing companies are required by law to provide training either for free or at cost, and most affiliate companies will do the same. It is in their best interest to educate you! Free Aloe Plant Get yourself an aloe vera plant for free! Free care and planting instructions, too. http://freealoeplant.tripod.com/ Step Four - Consider your Advertising Budget Be very cautious here! If the company or the representative even mentions the word 'spillover', get out of there as quickly as possible! If they promise to do all the work for you, they don't need you! If there is any mention of 'getting others to join' - leave and never return! You must be prepared to spend money each and every month in product advertising. This can be as simple as creating your own flyers or handouts and distributing them locally, but if you don't direct prospects to your sales site, you're going to fail. Keep Your Customers See how at: http://tryafreecard.com/ Then send a card FREE http://mailoutcards.com/ You can start small, but you must advertise. Step Five - Get Another Opinion Do not start without counsel from your spouse or partner, another business associate or a trusted friend. I would rather see you put your hard earned money into a passbook savings account than to dump it into a 'Get Rich Quick' scheme. If you're considering a company now and you're not sure, I'll be happy to review it for you at no charge. Just email with the company link and I'll look it over. How About Getting Started by Using These… Top 10 Marketing Tips By Denise Michaels 1. Know Your Market Many entrepreneurs have no clue who their customers are and why they really buy their product. If you say, “Everyone is my market,” that honestly means no one is your market. The more specific you can get about the kind of person who buys your products or services – the more you can really zero in on the perfect message and venue for that message that will make those people stand up and take notice. Pure, Safe Swiss Formula USA Made Aromatherapy, Cosmetics, Anti-aging Skin Care for Men, Women, Babies http://www.skinsodivine.com/ 2. Create Your Product or Service Around Their Needs Some people come up with something that they think is a great product but they never take the time to determine what needs it truly fills and what problems their product solves. They go on and on talking about features and gizmos that no one really cares about. That’s an expensive mistake. Find out what problems do your customers have that are in need of a solution. Not the other way around. 3. Offer Real Value Ask yourself honestly, “Would you buy it?” And, “Would you recommend it to your best friend?” Make it a value that just seems too good to pass up. Don’t undercut yourself. You deserve to cover your costs and make a fair profit. If people aren’t biting, don’t assume that the price is too high. Instead assume that you’re not doing an effective enough job of communicating the value. 4. Be Passionate There are many times when your enthusiasm and positive energy and problem-solving skills will be exactly what it takes to save the day and the deal. Also, chances are that what you offer is something that you’re going to be offering for a long time. Be passionate first about serving the customer, not just from a customer service standpoint but also in the marketing message that you build. 5. Love the Customer Not the Product It’s easy to love the product. Perhaps you use personally. Maybe you like all the features. This is misplaced loyalty. Revenues don’t come from the product. The product can’t love you back. But it can’t reject you the way a customer can either. Learn everything you can about your customers and potential customers. Ask questions and let that love reflect back to your customers in your marketing 6. Don’t Rely on Word-of-Mouth Advertising When I ask new entrepreneurs how they plan to market their business they frequently reply, “word-of-mouth.” Yes, it’s one of the strongest forms of “advertising”, but you could starve waiting. To me it means they have no marketing budget and no clue. There are free and inexpensive options. Create joint venture partnerships, network online, get articles in ezines. Do something! 7. Build a Clear Marketing Message A confused mind always says, “no.” As you create your marketing message ask several people to read through what you’ve written to see if it’s clear. Listen with an open mind to what they say. If they have to ask you questions, it’s not clear. If you have to explain beyond what you’ve written, that’s probably information that should go in your sales letter. If they’re ready to buy, you’ve got a winner. 8. Make Cause and Effect Links Don’t just tell them a feature or benefit about the product. Come full circle and tell them how that feature or benefit will make their life better. People are so busy and so stressed these days that they often don’t have time to make the connection. If you don’t show them how your product or service will improve their life in a real way, who will? Don’t expect them to sell themselves. I don’t get The Flu anymore!! Immunocal every day… ...keeps the bugs at bay. http://www.immunotec.com/bewellgetwell 9. Create Joint Venture Partners Team up with people who have something you want and you can offer value to them. For example, a person who has an email list for a product or interest that’s complimentary not competitive is a good friend to have. Write an email that comes from the list owner and guides his or her people to your website or sends them your sales letter via autoresponder. They get a commission on each sale. 10. Test, Test, and Test some More Find out in a small way if there are people who will nibble at your idea before you spend a lot of time or money on it. Talk up your idea with others. Many people will give you surprisingly good ideas. Gauge their reactions. Post little clues about your idea on a chat room of message board in an appropriate way with people who you think might be your customers. Ask, ask, ask and then listen. MyViralAds.com Branding By Bob LaPlante This article is intended to provide the reader with a broader understanding of Branding and is not intended as a How to Guide. At the end of the article I will provide some resources on the topic that will assist in your own research on Branding. What is it? How does it apply to Business? Webster Says: Main Entry: 2brand Function: transitive verb 1 : to mark with a brand 2 : to mark with disapproval : Stigmatize How does this apply to business? Well for anyone new to “brands” this is more than likely a confusing topic. And even more complex if you are looking for a straight concise answer! There are many definitions of a brand, rumor, logo, identity, ownership, the list goes on. Maybe a better definition would be “ones collective experience of a company, product or service with a given name” but alas this is not even right on the money! A brand is REALLY a memory! It’s a conscious recollection of something you saw, felt, or heard! Lets take a moment to think. What do these make you think of? “Like a Rock” “I’m Loving It” “Intel Inside” “taste of a new generation” These are ALL statements that trigger a memory! I will bet dollars t doughnuts that you can Name EVERY popular company that is associated to the above phrases. And the reason that you can be described in two words. Visibility, and Repetition! Visibility and Repetition are not only the two key elements in any advertising campaign, they are also the key elements in brand recognition! Lets take a minute to think, What do Yahoo, Chevrolet, McDonalds and lets say Pepsi have in common? I bet you guessed it, Brand Recognition! The reason they HAVE this brand recognition is because their advertising campaigns are not just focused on selling their product, they are also focused on etching their brand into your mind so when you hear their brand phrase(s) it triggers a memory that often triggers a response (purchase of their goods or service). Some Tips for branding your business: Branding today is not unlike it was in the old west. In the old west ranchers branded their livestock “Put their mark upon”. The savvy companies today are doing the same exact thing - they are putting a mark upon your mind! It is a good practice when approaching your branding project to begin at the end. Let me explain. What you need to do is make a decision of your desired outcome. Write it down, what is the result you desire to accomplish with your branding activities. Once this is firmly in place, now you want to remember 2 things - Visibility and Repetition! These are the mortar that you will build your brand upon, without them, you will wind up with maybe a logo, at best a jingle that won't stand the test of time! Understand that branding your product, company or service is an investment of time and money. It is very easy to equate branding with a dollar amount, but not as easy to place a “value” on a brand! Do NOT fall for shortsighted tactics. Since it is difficult to ascertain the true value of the brand, many marketers tend to compete on price alone. Though this may work short term, it will fail in the long haul! A better long term strategy is to compete on a high product value, and build quality brand recognition over a longer period of time. Branding is not a once off project. Brand recognition must be flexible and able to change with trends and market perception. The market may recognize your brand, but this may not translate into sales if it is not “fashionable” This often creates a knee-jerk reaction that many times leads to dropping of prices or maybe even drop the business all together! What should happen is more focus on changing the Brand recognition subtly to flex with the current trends to keep it more fashionable and appealing to a new generation of buyers. Harry Potter is a great example here, as the books were released, each one was a little more mature, with the last being a bit darker and more appealing to young adults. The higher you bid, the higher your advertisement will be displayed in the list. You pay only when a searcher clicks on your listing and connects to your site. You don't pay to list, you only pay for clicks or click throughs. You only pay for the traffic to your site. There are no other costs. Pay Per Click is not only available on search engines. Publishers can also include PPC advertisements on their sites. For ex., Google's Adsense, is a pay per click. PPC is a good way to drive targeted traffic to your site because you only pay for actual clicks to your site. It allows you to get maximum exposure, while you control the amount you want to spend on your marketing campaign. There are no risks and you can clearly track the effectiveness of your ad campaign. You do need to be leery of search engines that offer clickers money or incentives to click through their results. My advice is to steer clear of these search engines or programs as the clicks you pay for may not be the best quality. A great resource to locate and learn more about Pay Per Click sites would be: Ctrl + arrows - When you use these two keys together you skip words in a document so you can correct spelling faster. Where do I start? SEM (search engine marketing) / SEO (search engine optimization) is a topic that requires a book (or three) of it's own. There are many "techniques" advertised, some are good and some could actually hurt your positioning. Read, research, and if in doubt, consult an expert. Make Your Web Site Pay Off By Bill Treloar You’ve spent a lot of time and money on your company’s web site. So, after all of that, how come you’re not getting any business from it? Surely a decent percentage of people who visit your site will become customers. So where are they? The sad truth is that they probably never get to your web site at all because they can’t find it. Conduct A Simple Test Think like a customer who wants your most important or most profitable product or service but doesn’t know the name of your business. Go into any search engine and try to look up your own web site just like that customer would. Does your web site show up in the first 30 listings? Is it in the first three pages of results? If not, customers aren’t finding you. For potential customers to find your site, you need to get it into the top 30 listings on most of your important keywords in most of the important search engines. And the way to do that is with search engine positioning. Search Engine Positioning involves making changes to your web site that will cause it to appear closer to the top of the search listing. It’s a proven technology that makes a real difference in the number of visitors to a web site. And those visitors are pre-selected customers because they’re already looking for what your business offers. You Can Do it Yourself It’s possible to do your own search engine positioning. While it takes time and effort to do an effective job, the payoff is undeniable. There are several books available that can help you optimize your own site. A few examples are: o Search Engine Positioning by Marckini o Webmaster’s Secret Internet Marketing & Search Engine Positioning Strategies by Lary & Gregg o Internet Marketing and Search Engine Positioning – A "Do-It-Yourself" Guide by Sekhar o The Savvy Way to Website Promotion by Galon You Can Hire Someone Else to Do It For You If you decide to pay someone to market your web site, look for a number of features: 1) Do they work with you to identify the important and powerful keyword phrases to target for your site? 2) Do they report to you on how you rank on those keywords in the different search engines before they suggest changes to your site? 3) Do they optimize your site (or show you how to do it yourself) so you rank highly on your important keywords in the important search engines? 4) Do they submit your site carefully so you won't get penalized for spamming? 5) Do they submit effectively to directories like Yahoo? 6) Can they help you submit to "pay-per-click" sites and show you who is paying what for your important keywords? 7) After your site has been optimized and submitted to search engines, can they report on how you're doing in terms of moving up or down and retaining your good positions over time? 8) Can they keep your site in the top listings for your essential keywords? Summary Effective web site marketing through search engine positioning can make a world of difference to your business. Results are not immediate, but we normally see dramatic differences within about three months. Search engine positioning is well worth the time and trouble if you do it properly. It translates into new customers and increased revenue for your business. EZWebBusinessBuilder.com Improve Your Web Site’s Reputation By Bill Treloar How well you rank in the search engines when someone searches for your products or services is a function of two things: Relevance and Reputation. Relevance has to do with how easily the search engines can tell if your page is relevant to what was searched for. That’s addressed through classic search engine optimization techniques for enhancing on-page keyword relevance. Reputation is measured by your link popularity: the number of quality of web sites that link to you. Search engines view incoming links as “votes” for the quality of your site by the web site that links to you. Obviously, it’s important to obtain a good number of inbound links to your site. But not all are created equal, and it’s important to understand why. Here are some concrete strategies for improving your link popularity. Where to look for links, how to evaluate potential links, and – when you request a link – how to specify the link you want. Outbound Links Don’t Count ... Much Simplistically stated, outbound links don’t really impact on your link popularity. However, search engines may treat inbound links from web sites that you link to as less valuable than links from web sites you don’t link to. That’s because unreciprocated links are generally considered to be unbiased “votes” for your web site. Reciprocal links may just point to you because you agreed to point to them. Such links aren’t completely discounted, but they may, in certain search engines, be weighted less heavily. If a web site is valuable to your visitors to know about, you should link to them, even if they link back to you. It will never hurt you, and you will get some benefit from that inbound link. A Couple of Other Bad Ideas Don’t sign up for Free For All link sites. These are web sites set up solely for the purpose of selling links to other web sites that need better link popularity. The search engines are aware of this tactic and don’t count those links in your favor at all. Also, beware of the practice of setting up multiple dummy domains just so you can put up web sites that will link to your main web site. The search engines are on the lookout for that trick, too. So What Are Good Links? And How Do I Get Them? Actually, there are lots of very valuable link opportunities out there, some of which you may not have thought of. But first, what makes a good link? What Makes a Good Link? Good links share a few basic common features. Source Page PageRank The page that links to you should have a good Google PageRank. PageRank is Google’s measure of your link popularity, on a scale of 0-10. Your site inherits a piece of the PageRank of every page linking to you, so links from pages with high link popularity count more for you. Not Too Many Links on the Source Page The portion of the PageRank from each page that links to you that you actually benefit from is based in part on the number of outbound links from that page. A link from a PageRank 4 page that has three outbound links may be more valuable than a link from PageRank 6 page that has 150 outbound links. Relevant Links A relevant link is one that’s related to your target page’s topic and keywords. It’s possible to get all the relevance you need from links alone. A recent illustration is the “miserable failure” prank. One or more people created lots of links from many web pages, all of them having the same link text (the text, often blue and underlined, of the link itself) that said miserable failure. They pointed all of these links to the official White House web site biography of President George W. Bush, and pretty soon, George Bush’s bio was the number one ranked site in Google for “miserable failure”. All without that phrase ever appearing on the target page itself. Relevant links exert a powerful influence because you get a double whammy: they help both your reputation (because they’re links) and your relevance (because they’re related to your page’s keywords.) What makes a relevant link? Consider these factors: If the page title of the page linking to you includes one of your keywords or is clearly related to the subject of your site, that make it a relevant link. Similarly, if the text content of the source page is clearly related to your content, that makes it a relevant link. And finally, if the link text itself contains a keyword for your page, that makes it a relevant link. Think how powerful a link can be if it matches all three factors! Where Do I Find Good Link Partners? General Purpose Directories General purpose directories like the Yahoo! Directory, the Open Directory Project, Zen Search, and Joe Ant are a good start. Not only are such links coming from a web site with decent PageRank, but they’re also coming from a page that’s all about the topic of your web site. Vertical Directories These are directories, but with a focus. Examples might be FindLaw.com for lawyers, MetroNJ.com for New Jersey businesses, your local Chamber of Commerce, ContractorGuide.com for building contractors, or the New Jersey Real Estate Directory. Many of these directories charge a fee for listings, and when they do it’s usually quite a bit larger than fees charged by general purpose directories. But if the vertical directory has enviable search engine rankings for your keywords and gets tons of traffic, it may turn out to be a bargain. Online Press Releases Online press releases are often picked up by search engines like Google News and Yahoo! News, and links from such press releases certainly count as well as links from any other web site. The nice thing about press releases is that you have control over the title or headline, the text content, and maybe even the link text. What could be better? Complementary Web Sites Web sites that are related to yours without competing with you make great link partners, whether or not they request you to link back to them in return. Think about the nature of your business. If you’re a florist, for example, chances are you often provide flowers for weddings. Wedding directories are great places for links. But what about local musicians who play at weddings? How about local wedding officiants? Local catering venues that host wedding receptions? The local tuxedo rental store? How about other florists who are too remote to impact on your local clientele? All of these may be willing to link to you, and it may be a value to the visitors on your web site to know about these other resources as well. How Do I Request These Links? This isn’t as simple as it sounds. For directory listings, look in the directory for an “Add Your Site” link and fill out the forms. For online press releases, search for them, visit them, and find their guidelines. Remember they need press releases, not advertisements, so you’ll need to write something newsworthy. For complementary web sites, you may need a little more creativity. Webmasters are constantly bombarded with form emails asking them to link to someone. Most active webmasters with a large number of client web sites get tons of these requests and treat them pretty much like spam. To get through that defensive wall takes some effort. If you send an email to a web site asking them to link to you, explain to them why they should. Don’t just tell them that they should because you’ll link back and that will increase their PageRank. The best prospects for you have an enviable PageRank already, so that argument won’t work. Explain why a link from their web site to yours provides extra value to the visitors on their web site. If they ask you for a return link, give it to them. (If their web site isn’t good enough to link to from your site, then you shouldn’t want a link from them either.) And if they turn you down, link to them anyway if it provides additional value to your site’s visitors. If it makes your site better, why not add the link regardless of whether they link to you? If there’s a web site you really want a link from, and you get no response to an email request, call them on the phone! Be prepared to explain clearly and succinctly why it’s good for their site to have a link to you. It’s harder to say no on the phone than to ignore an email request. Why do you suppose the telemarketing business makes so many phone calls? What Kind of Link Should I Ask For? Three Rules One: don’t ask for links to just your home page. Link to the page that’s most relevant to the source of the link, and that will vary from one link partner to the next. Link to your optimized pages. You don’t have to send all links to the same place. Two: Ask your link partner to use one of your keywords in the link itself. And then make sure the link points to the page on your web site that’s been optimized for that keyword. Remember, the link doesn’t have to reflect the actual address. You don’t want a link that says www.marionettes.com/howdy-doody.htm. Much better would be Howdy Doody Marionettes. Three: Vary your links. Use different keywords in the links. Point to different pages on your site. Mix them up the way they would occur naturally if you never asked for them in the first place. Finally, Hang In There! Building link popularity is a long-term, labor-intensive project. You won’t get links from everyone you ask. And even if you could, you don’t want to get too many links all at one time. That looks to the search engines like you went out and “bought” a bunch of links. If they think that’s what happened, the can simply fail to count those links. After all, bought links aren’t true votes for the value of your web site. Spread out your effort. Spend an hour or two a month on this project. You might be able to spend a little more time on it, but don’t assign someone to work full-time, 40 hours a week, requesting links for your site. If the links come in too fast, they may not count. If you want to expand your home based business and build an online reputation then all you need to do is write and submit ezine articles. Sounds simple. However I found the task very daunting. So I will share with you what I have learned. Research and Plan Firstly you need to write the articles. Write on a topic you know something about. Some ideas you have learned building your Internet business, something related to your business opportunity or a hobby or investment opportunity you have. Ensure it is interesting and informative and not just an advertisement for your home business. The most popular articles are between 300 750 words. To find your word count, go to “tools” in the Windows menu. There is an automatic word count tab there. Some ezines want articles to contain 65 characters a line. Here is a formatting tool for free conversion to the number of characters you want. I do not pay for any listings, nor do I charge for my articles. Here are some tips from Ezinearticles.com on writing good articles. "The first 4 words of the title are crucial to its success. The introduction can be the first paragraph. Make sure the article is keyword rich and reflects the theme of your home based business. Never put the title in the body. Never use more than 3 web addresses and they should all be different. Print a copy, proof read it, and then ask someone else to read it. Your article should look professional, with no spelling mistakes or vague sentences. Submitting When you are satisfied with your article start submitting it to ezines and ezine directories. Look for ezines designed for work at home people, or whatever your article is related to. It is often more time efficient to write a few articles and submit them all together. It is time consuming to manually submit. Some can be submitted thru the website others want email attachments. Some ezines want to you to subscribe, before you can submit articles. Establish an email address just for ezines. Consider an address that matches your business, for example if you sell weight loss products use something like loseweight@yourprovider.com Once you start submitting articles you will receive a lot of spam. However you need to read through it, as sometimes there is a request to reuse an article or a request for more articles and sometimes compliments. Some people use different URL’s for every ezine they submit to. I have not done this as once they are out in cyberspace articles can be picked up by anyone. So you really do not know where the traffic is coming from. This is the beauty of the Internet. Good articles are used over and over by many ezine owners. It is imperative to include a ‘resource box’ or ‘signature file’ at the end of your article. This is your opportunity to describe your business in a few lines and include your URL. Do some searches for ezine directories. Here are some addresses to get you started: http://ezinearticles.com/ http://directoryofezines.com/ http://ezinepublishingcafe.com/ http://zinestar.com/ http://ezinelisting.com/ http://goarticles.com/ http://ideamarketers.com/ http://gogetglobal.com/ http://promotenews.com/ http://trafficswarm.com/ http://searchwarp.com/ http://netterweb.com/ http://articlecity.com/ http://ezineadvertising.com/ Results Since I have been writing and submitting articles my home business has grown. By Karen Steele Customer relationships are the lifeblood of every good company. Relationships between a company and their customers, distributors, employees, referral sources, are vital to continued, sustained growth, and stability. Loyal relationships with these valued individuals make for a strong bottom line. According to customer relationship management experts, companies can increase revenue by 50% if they retain only 5% more of their customers. When you consider that two-thirds of customers switch from one company to another because of a perceived attitude of indifference from the former company, it makes sense to focus as much attention on customer retention as you do on customer acquisition. Customers who are continuously courted, interacted with, and reminded of your company's presence are less likely to go racing off when competitors come calling. Making those customers feel recognized, known and appreciated can go a long way toward locking up their loyalty. And, it's also a great way to get them referring others. With well-planned relationship marketing efforts, like a greeting card campaign, you can impact retention -- and that will impact the bottom line. Karen Steele has 10 years experience in Group Marketing, working with Benefit Brokers, Third Party Administrators, Top Executives, and Decision Makers. My expertise is working with companies and individual's to focus on Customer Retention and Referrals which helps increase a companies bottom line. Once you have established yourself as the “expert” by providing the media with information, these same journalists and editors will be calling you and printing your story. The reader will remember your name when they need your type of product or service. The three D’s to cultivate the media are: DISCOVER what editors and reporters are working on now and in the future . . . • by obtaining editorial calendars… Editorial calendars list the theme or focus of each issue. These days most media (print, radio, tv, internet) list their editorial calendars online • by offering timely information such as: why tulips are the most requested spring flowers. Include when they are available, where and how they grow. Or why stock prices are at an all-time high, what does your firm attribute to the increase? DEVELOP new and interesting angles about your business that will evoke emotion from the reader; such as a special floral purchase made by a customer. Did someone recently purchase 200 tulips for someone they love because that’s what she carried in her bridal bouquet 50 years ago— “Dramatize!” Develop your niche. Do you offer free seminars on topics the reader needs to know about? Tell the story! You can create an event. Restaurants do it all the time. Sometimes local personalities will be asked or hired to attend an opening or other newsworthy event promoting the restaurant. There may even be fundraising aspect associated with the celebrities’ favorite charities. The restaurateur can then get the media to respond to the promotion and get “coverage” because he is doing a good deed. In addition, he is exposing his business to the community. Perhaps you wish to contribute to a specific charity each time a customer refers your company— Publicize it! You are giving the community something to relate to and participate in. With a little foresight and imagination, the possibilities are endless! Want more information on creating an event? Visit www.WUNPublications.com and click on special reports. Check out the report “One Great Event Leads to Another and Another and…” Perhaps you are celebrating a significant anniversary in business? Write about it! Follow these DETAILS to enhance the probability your article gets printed. • Disseminate key information to the media in an easy-to- read, easy-to-write format. • Keep it short. A maximum of two pages is sufficient. • Send it to a specific person. Use her name. Don’t just address it to The Editor. Some communities publish a local media guide that may be available at a reasonable cost, often a good resource to the media. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce or Economic Development Board. It’s certainly a worthwhile investment. Make sure you contact the various media just to confirm the individual information. In today’s market, contact information changes with considerable frequency. • Make sure it is a valid event and not disguised as self-serving advertising. ● ● Capture the reader’s attention. Attention-getting headlines seldom get passed over. Speak your mind. What’s your point of view? Tell it! ● Dramatize - but don’t exaggerate. Use visualization to make your point. Describe the beautiful, fragrant, long-stem, ruby red rose. ● Don’t give away the store. Tell just enough of the story to create interest. The media will pick up the phone and call you for “the rest of the story.” © 2005 - Heidi Richards is the author of The PMS Principles, Powerful Marketing Strategies to Grow Your Business and 7 other books. Networking and Chat Marketing By Bob LaPlante Networking In today’s technologically advanced world, the meaning of “networking” has truly been altered. Back in the day it was common to hear the term "The good old boy network". What this meant was a “group” or a “click” of people. Networking is STILL the most powerful way to build professional relationships, actively foster contacts and disseminate information. And that does NOT mean that we have to overlook technology as there is actually 1 tried and true “Network” that leverages technology to expand its usefulness, it is called Max in Common! In 1994 it was estimated on average people would change jobs 10.3 times in their work career. In the year 2000, the number was 3 to 5 career changes!. These numbers clearly indicate that people skills, and the ability to create personal “networks” are key to maintain a position. Lets look at the Federal Bureau of Labor statistics. • 70% of all jobs are found through networking (personal contacts). • 15% through search firms. • 10-12% via Want Ads • 4% self created jobs • 2% through mass sending of resumes • Being at the right place, at the right time results in more people being hired than any other reason. With this thought in mind, it is impossible for you to leverage this fact if you are not ever broadening your network of contacts! This again is exactly why Max in Common is a requirement in your life! Ok, how do you go about building a personal network? • Join Max in Common (at least at the free level) • Go out of your way to meet every single person that you have the opportunity to meet, and invite them to be part of Max in Common also. • Be genuine, because people know if you are a phony. • Volunteering can help people who are shy or who find it hard to meet new people break out of their shells. Volunteering will afford you a smaller group to start and then you can build on that. Plus volunteering will build self-esteem and confidence faster than anything else because you are helping others. Always deliver more than you are asked to deliver. • Start over again ☺ Always building contacts, always caring about others. Beware of networking pitfalls. • Be sincere • Don't ask for (or expect) payback • Respect other’s time • KEEP promises • Err on the side of politeness and formality • Don't wait to be introduced - practice a self-introduction • Say thank-you (and really mean it). Networking is not only important from an employment standpoint, it is critical in business and personal development! Networking is relationship building and it is an absolute necessity for success in business or in life. Why Network right? Actually it really is not a question, you do it daily already, do you see a neighbor? Talk to your child’s teacher? This is really just networking activity, now just expand upon that and Max in Common is the solution you need for that expansion! Not only does Max in Common provide you with the perfect place to network, it also offers advertising capabilities, live chat and many other tools to assist you with your business, including large e-book and software libraries. Free members get a LOT of features, but if you upgrade to a Gold membership it's like putting your advertising on steroids! There are other networking sites out there, but none offer half the features that Max in Common offers. Tired of the hit and run marketers on the other sites? Come on over to Max in Common and see how "Marketers Helping Marketers" works so much better. See you “On Max” – Join now! MaxInCommon.com Chat Room Marketing Chat Room Marketing is the use of online voice and text chat services to build relationships while you are sharing your business products or services with prospective customers. Building relationships is critical when you’re dealing with prospects. The majority of customers that purchase new products do so because they like and trust the salesperson! There are a variety of free chat rooms available to anyone with an internet connection. Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN are just a few of the more popular ones. Many chat services not only provide member to member chat, but also provide ‘public room’ where more than two people can meet Almost all services allow the user to create a ‘profile’ detailing their business and/or personal information. This is a very powerful way of beginning that critical relationship with your prospects. Most of the visitors that you talk to will check your profile! A detailed profile is also your first and best opportunity to get a marketing message through! I suggest you spend some time designing your profile. Include a picture and your phone number. Real people in business have no problem with this, and it shows credibility on your part. Include a short message about your business with a link to your website! There are thousands of topic based ‘public’ chat rooms operating on the Internet that you can visit any time you wish. These chat rooms have rules prohibiting visitors from business showing up just to ‘pitch or their wares’. Always operate within the rules in public rooms or you will be labeled a SPAMMER and possibly be banned from the room. The idea is to use chatting to build relationships, not to burden other visitors with information they did not ask for! Seek out public chat rooms based on topics where visitors may be interested in what you are marketing. Visit as a ‘curious guest’ and begin building relationships first. Once you get to know the group, ask questions that will lead to a discussion covering your products or services. Start conversing with people in the rooms, be a studious listener and you will find people that may be interested in what you are marketing. Ask leading questions that turn conversation toward you marketing pitch. Remember, obey the rules! If you have something to offer for free or topical information of interest to the visitors, you can ‘share’ it with them to drive targeted visitors to your site – but it must be relevant to the room’s topic! Using free chat services to promote your business has its drawbacks. Free chat rooms are typically ‘open to the public’, are not secure and operate on voice servers that load down as the number of visitors increase. This causes a decrease in audio quality and delays that disturb your presentation. The good news is that chat room technology has evolved right along with the Internet. The once very expensive, corporate quality chat rooms are now available at a price that even the small business or home user can afford. Having your own private chat room gives you the advantage of full control over the visitors, the topics and the presentations. Advancements in chat room technology now give you much more than just the ability to talk. With the modern chat rooms, you can take visitors right to your web site and show them your products or services, answer their questions and close your sales in real time! In addition, you can ‘brand’ a good quality chat room with your company logo to give that ‘total professional’ impression to your visitors! Use your imagination, possibilities are endless! Some things to do in your chat room: • Host free online seminars in your chat room with a subject based on your expertise. • Use your chat room to meet with current customers with problems or questions. • Use your chat room to do product or service demonstrations at no cost to the prospects. • Regularly schedule FREE events in your chat room, give away “door prizes” • Seek out & schedule subject matter experts as guest speakers in your room. • Use your room for product and marketing training. • Encourage families with loved ones abroad to use your room to communicate with them FREE of charge. • Place a chat room link on your web site and greet prospects at the door. • Host an open “Member’s Room” where your associates can meet and ‘kick dirt’. I could go on and on here, but I think you get the idea. The potential benefit is limitless! Most chat rooms allow you to text chat as well as communicate in voice. Visitors that are familiar with chat rooms will naturally use common chat room acronyms, and there are thousands. As the moderator or presenter, you should never use these acronyms when new visitors are present. By Diane Walker Have you ever noticed that there are people you enjoy being around and others that you would rather avoid. Negative people drag you down. I avoid them myself like the plague. Some people make the room light up when they walk in and others seem to make it light up when they leave. There are just some people have a tendency to whine and complain and want to nit pick over ever little detail, while others just take it as it is and go on to be a big success. They say you should associate with those you want to be like. Hang around with positive motivated people and you become positive and motivated. Hang around with those that whine and complain and you become whiney. Everyone has a choice, we can chose to win or we can watch others pass us buy as they head for the top We all have the EXACT same opportunity. We all have the same products, the same company. The only difference is the effort we put fort to get out and make things happen to grow our business. We can WHINE and make excuses about why we're not growing, OR we can get out and do the things it takes to make our business grow. Cream rises to the top. Spend quality time with quality people and your business will grow. Say LESS to MORE people and never try to drag, or convince anyone. IF they do not see the big picture, they simply will never make it. NOTHING you can do will change that Buckle down, do the work, and make things happen. You can build a solid foundation, with lots and lots of other winners, and make a good income. You can also hand around people that whine and complain and let them drag you down. That is your choice. You can make MONEY or EXCUSES, but never both at the same time. Winners find a way to make things happen, losers find a way to blame someone else. People that chose to be winners, never make excuses. They just buckle down and make things happen. We all run into obstacles, and things we didn't plan to happen, but we find a way to work them out. Put a roadblock in my path, and I will find a way OVER, around or through it. I decided LONG LONG ago that quitting was NEVER an option I would take. I decided also that I would by CHOICE become a success in the field of network marketing, and I would never stop till I reached the top. I've had to change companies, and start over a few times, due to bad choices, inexperience, unethical people, or some that just closed down. I could have taken the easy way out, and just thrown in the towel and became one of those silly MLM bashers that say things don't work. Instead, I chose to move on, use my experiences to judge what NOT TO DO, and chose a better company Through it all, I've learned many valuable lessons. I look at it as an education in life. I am VERY Excited to have found an answer and am able to be FREE, to come and go as I please, work where and when I want, and make a difference. That did not happen because I sat down and make excuses. I made a conscious choice to go to work and MAKE it happen. You can do, but it starts and ends with YOU! No one will be able to do if FOR you, but yourself. Everyone has CHOICES to make. Everyone has the SAME 24 hours in a day. Most people have JOBS to go to and are doing this part time. I used to be one of them. When I worked in Corporate America, I got up an extra hour early to work my business, many times I ran home on my lunch hour to answer mail, and then I worked 3-4 hours (sometimes more at night on by business) I stayed up an extra hour or 2. I also worked weekends and learned to work recruiting into my lifestyle so no matter where I went I had a 60 second commercial to tell someone, and of course got their # or email to follow up. I can relate well to working full time and building part time because I did that for a number of years. I've never been afraid of work. I was raised to get a job, work 40 years and then get a pension and a gold watch. That does NOT happen these days. So we all have choices. We can chose to work FOR someone else OR we can chose to build a future for ourselves. We can chose to be a WHINER and complain about all the things wrong OR we can chose to be a WINNER, buckle down and get busy making things happen. What is YOUR CHOICE? Remember, you do have to CHOOSE!!!!! Diane "AKA MLMBlonde" Walker is a professional network marketer that has built her business using the power of the internet. Copyright 2005 - Legendary Ventures (MAX ID mlmblonde) 8 "Well Guarded Secrets" By Preston Gaymon These are the 8 until now, well guarded "Secrets" to starting a wildly profitable Internet business in your spare time. If you're serious about earning an extra income from a Internet business, then you must learn and apply these 8 “Secrets” today. 1) Leverage Your Time. You'll never get rich trading dollars for hours. The wealthy let their money` and other people work for them. You may only be able to work 10 hours a week, but you can leverage the work of 1,000 other people to create a 10,000 hour work week. That's the way to become wealthy as well as wise. By the way, you can do this without ever hiring any employees. 2) Your success will come because of systems not individual effort. Remember what J.Paul Getty said in the 20th Century, ”I would rather have one percent of a hundred men’s effort rather than a hundred percent of my own." Find something that everyone will want. And so simple everyone can do. If you intend to go into business guess what the #1 function you must do to survive. You must SELL something! It must be either a product or service or both. But guess what? The number one reason people can't make it in business it is because they can't or don't like to sell. 3) Don't Re-Invent The Wheel. Don't start from scratch. That's the hardest way to do anything. Inventors go through tons of frustration, failed tests, and often ridicule. Find a system Self Help and Motivational Reading that's already working. Then just jump in and follow it. Just do what already works. When you see someone successful Think and Grow Rich - by Napoleon Hill in your field doggedly follow them. This book will teach you the law of success and how other great men like him became successful. It gives basic simple techniques to use to get yourself started to success. Napoleon Hill's Keys to Success - The 17 Principles of Personal Achievement - by Napoleon Hill This book is about using techniques to learn personal achievement. setting goals, creating a vision, and a positive attitude. It's full of advice and mental exercises you can try to see what works best for you. What To Say When You Talk To Yourself - by Shad Helmstetter, Ph.D This book by far is my all-time favorite. It tells you how and what self talk to use for whatever situation you're in and what you want the end result to be. Basically, your success starts with you and what you tell yourself to program your subconscious. Your subconscious is what drives you to take action and brings help to you from the universe. 4) Find a Personal Coach. Every top athlete has a coach. In fact, many of the best have two or three coaches. They're there for one reason... to help them be the best they can possibly be. A coach will help you set your course. They'll help keep you on track. They'll take you from where you are today to where you want to be. 5) Generate leads. Lead generation is the biggest advantage in most businesses. Choose a mentor that will show you how to put your business in front of the people who are looking for what you have to offer. this is called Targeting Your Market. 6) Use Tax Advantages. Starting your own online business gives you the advantage of tax benefits not available to the general public. Everyone should make money from their home with an online business just to save on taxes if nothing else... 7) Build a Residual Income. Don't just sell a product one time. Find a way to earn a residual income from anything you sell. Sell something today. Earn an income on it every month for the rest of your life. Learn to work six months to a year and get paid on that effort the rest of you life. Learn to use Positive Thinking! The Magic of Thinking Big - by David J. Schwartz, Ph.D This book is about 2 words "Dream Big". No dream is too small or unimportant. The way you think is the way you'll be. Developing good thinking habits will get you the results you desire in whatever area of your life that needs improvement. Secrets of the Millionaire Mind - by Angelica Eberle Wagner This book is about creating a vision with a humorous twist. The author is very down to earth and it's like she's speaking directly to you. It's set up with different small chapters and it's best read at 1 or 2 chapters at a time so it sinks in and creates "aha!" moments that will stick with you even after you finish reading it. The Dream Giver - by Bruce Wilkinson This book is in parable form and will help you think differently of what you see day to day from a different perspective. It's your dream to live and no one can take it from you. Your destiny awaits you and the obstacles you face are really opportunities to help you grow and reach your destiny. Submitted by Mary Leedy (MAX ID candlepassion) This is how you build real wealth. It isn't by selling a onetime item and finding a new customer for it every day. It is far better to work an hour today and earn an income forever. 8) Set goals. Most people live paycheck to paycheck all their lives. They hope Social Security will take care of them when they get older. That's a mistake. Social security isn't enough for people to live on today. It definitely won't be when you have to rely on it. You have to make a plan today...or you'll end up in desperation tomorrow. This time follow through with action. And you will be successful. Persistence is Omnipotent! It's your choice. You can stay where you are right now in a never-ending spiral...or you can turn the corner and experience the money, lifestyle, and dreams you've always wanted. While that's true to an extent, it isn't the whole truth. Knowledge without action is almost useless. It doesn't help to be a genius if you never do anything with the knowledge. I tend to think of knowledge as ammunition and action as a gun. (It's a typical guy thought; I know, but it works for me.) Think about it. If you have bullets and no gun, they're pretty much useless. If you have a gun and no bullets, the best you can do is throw (action) the gun at the target. Not as useless as the bullets (knowledge) since action without knowledge is more productive than knowledge without action. The reason I've been thinking about this lately is that I've been reading article after article about how to make money, get high search engine ranking, find customers & prospects, motivate myself and others and several other subjects and realized that regardless of how much info I've gained, it's worthless if I don't act on that knowledge. And it's the same for everyone. It wouldn't matter if you had a PhD in Quantum Physics if you worked at McDonalds, or a library full of books and never used the knowledge within, now would it? I've met some really intelligent homeless people and some stupid millionaires and the biggest difference is action. Let me say this again, ACTION. Action makes people successful to a certain degree. Not to say that any action will make people successful. Jumping up and down or changing channels will not do it, but action of any kind that propels you toward your target goal will get you there eventually. Another way to think of it is like having a map. I could give you a map to a lost treasure, but if you never left your house, it wouldn't do much good would it?
