Canadian Pacific Airlines
Canadian Pacific Railways purchased ten bush airlines during the 1940s, finishing with the purchase of Western Canadian Airlines in
1942, to form Canadian Pacific Airlines (CPA or CPAL). In 1943, the first Lockheed Lodestar was delivered to CPA and was registered
as CF-CPA. In 1943 a total of seven (7) Lodestars were allocated to CPA by the USAAF, especially for use on the WSR, Alaskan
Highway & Canal Pipeline. The following provides an inventory of these aircraft:
1. CF-CPA (42-108787, c/n 18-2177) was to have gone to Dutch East Indies Air Force as LT-926 but was diverted to USAAC when the
Japanese overran Java. The plane never served with the USAAF and was released to Canadian Pacific Airlines as CF-CPA. Bellylanded in a
swamp in 1960 and has been derelict there ever since. There are plans for its recovery and restoration (currently underway).
2. CF-CPB (42-108788, c/n 18-2179) sister ship to CF-CPA. Originally destined for Dutch East Indies Air Force and was to have become LT928. Was diverted as C-60-LO and allocated to Canadian Pacific Airlines.
3. CF-CPE (42-56016, c/n 18-2489) Canadian Pacific Airlines, then to Air Products as N67978.
4. CF-CPF (42-55993, c/n 18-2466) Canadian Pacific Airlines, then to Brown Co. as N81B.
5. CF-CPG (42-56036, c/n 18-2509) Canadian Pacific Airlines (per Michael Zoeller), currently N1940S.
6. CF-CPK (42-56041, c/n 18-2534) Canadian Pacific Airlines. Note that the MSN Serial No. (42-56041) for this aircraft is only five numbers
away from that of N1940S (42-56036). However, the construction numbers for these two aircraft are not in similar sequence. This is due
to the issue of six civilian Lodestar Model 18-56s which were impressed by the USAAF. These aircraft were designated C-60s at that time
and issued MSNs (42-108787/108792). Note that this group of Lodestars, which includes CF-CPA and CF-CPB above) have older
construction numbers (i.e., 18-2177, 18-2179). All six of these Lodestars were originally intended for transfer to allied air forces, but
were retained by the USAAF, which is how several of them were allotted to Canadian Pacific Airlines. The construction number for CFCPK (c/n 18-2534) illustrates the gap formed in the sequencing of construction numbers at that time.
7. CF-CPZ (42-56070, c/n 18-2563) Canadian Pacific Airlines, then to C. Peabody & Co. as N9050.
With the noted exception of CF-CPG (N1940S), for which confirmation remains pending, it has been possible to confirm that the above six
of seven Lodestars were at one time owned and operated by Canadian Pacific Airlines. The connection between N1940S and Canadian
Pacific Airlines has only been confirmed in the aircraft history provided by Michael Zoeller. However, the information provided by Michael
Zoeller in his history of N1940S, most especially the photograph of this aircraft when owned by Dye Oxygen, lends credence in my opinion
to the information he has provided.
