www.lofs.org Lakes of the Four Seasons Publication of the Lakes of the Four Seasons Property Owners Association Severe thunderstorms take a heavy toll in LOFS, Winfield By Lucas Schmidt Last month’s monstrous storm swept through much of Northwest Indiana and its straight-line winds took a heavy toll on Lakes of the Four Seasons. Roughly onethird of the gated community was damaged. Those damages included fallen branches, uprooted trees, and several accounts of property damage. One home had its roof torn off due to the winds, which reached speeds of more than 70 mph according to the National Weather Service. Most of the damages were located in the northern section of the community where fallen branches littered roadsides. Some homeowners, however, had more than branches fall in their yards. Frank Libauskas was in his father’s LOFS home when the storm hit and heard the noise of three trees crash into the room above him. “I heard that crash and saw the heavy winds. I was 100% sure it was a tornado,” he recalled. While a tornado warning was issued for Lake County Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service stated that straight-line winds are sometimes confused with tornadoes because of their high wind speeds. Other residents also suffered property damage from fallen trees. Chuck Dorin’s home had a tree fall on the roof and another tree fell and totaled both of his cars. Dorin however was in high spirits and was not upset by the storm’s damage to his home. “I can’t be happier,” he said. “I’m just thankful for my insurance.” The cost of cleaning up all the debris from the storm will easily cost many thousands of dollars, according to LOFS Community Manager Rick Cleveland. That accounts for having the Maintenance Department going throughout the entire community and chipping all the branches residents put on the roadside, and then taking them off-site. Many of the fallen trees were too large and required contractors to come in and remove with heavy-duty equipment that LOFS does not have on hand. Speaking on the severity of the storm Cleveland said, “I’d say this was one of the worst.” No injuries were reported. The estimated 70-100 mph winds tore the roof from one home. Frank Libauskas was in his father’s home when three trees all fell through the same wall. An estimated 100 oak trees were damaged or uprooted during the storm. By Doug Weiss, Golf Superintendent The heart of summer has arrived; July is the most difficult month to maintain cool season grass. Before I move on to the process of keeping the turf healthy, I must look back at the horrible storm that went through the community. I would also like to introduce the newest member of our golf course on hole eleven. On June 12 the golf course changed forever when straight line winds blew through the entire community. There were 82 trees that were either damaged or lost from various locations throughout the golf course, including the pro shop area. The initial clean up has taken approximately two weeks. There are some branches that still need to be removed from several trees. This will be a summer long project along with the process of which trees need to be replaced. The practice green and number eighteen green had minimal damage. The cleanup effort was greatly enhanced by the volunteers who spent their time cutting, hauling, and raking branches and leaves from the greens, tees, and fairways. I received a couple of texts and one phone call to see if I needed help and approximately 70 people showed up. Without their help, the course would not have been able to be open for several more days. Thank You! The heat and humidity of July is very hard on cool season grass. We have taken several steps to give us the best chance to get through this month successfully. The purchase of the slice aerifier will allow the soil to have the exchange of gasses. The aerifier will also allow water to penetrate past the thatch layer. For the last three years, the fairways have suffered mainly because the heat and rain simply fried the turf. I have also changed the fertility program for the fairways. Liquid fertilizer has been applied every two weeks starting in May; this allows a more steady growth instead Monthly Update Golf Operations Lakes of the Four Seasons of granular fertilizer that makes the turf grow rapidly. I believe that these changes along with the weather station will give the fairways the best chance of survival. Finally, I would like to introduce you to “Woody”. He is the carving of a golfer on hole eleven. The MGA paid for Custom Carving to carve a golfer out of a dead oak tree. Ryan Matijevich did a LOFS Fishing Tournament coming July 27 Clean-up crews arrived early the morning after the storm to begin removing fallen trees. July 2013 The Fishing Club will hold a Community Fishing Tournament on July 27. The tournament will be held on Lake Holiday beginning at 6 a.m. Sign in time will be at 5 a.m. at the Lake Holiday boat launch. great job on the statue. If you want his contact information please let me know. The next greens committee meeting is Monday July 1 at 6 p.m. Feel free to come and express your opinions or ask any questions. Thank you once again to my staff, the Pro Shop staff, the Operations Department, the Lakes Department, and all the volunteers. 2 July 2013 LOFS Seasonal Monthly Update Monthly Update POA Community Manager Keenagers Lakes of the Four Seasons Lakes of the Four Seasons The storm that raged through LOFS the evening of June 12 caused destruction mainly to the northern portion of the community. Fortunately there were no reports of injuries. Several large trees were uprooted and destroyed. The maintenance crew was out that same evening clearing trees and debris from the roadways so vehicles could travel through the community safely. The maintenance crews will continue collecting branches from the curbside until the job is completed. Please be patient, as there is an enormous amount to collect. The Thursday Night Concerts at the Clubhouse began on June 6. The weather was a little chilly but we still had a great turnout. As a reminder to those attending the concerts, you are not allowed to walk into or out of the Clubhouse restaurant with alcoholic beverages. Garbage cans have been placed all around the grounds and I ask concertgoers to please use them. The Pool Manager and I made the decision in June to have the pool open on Mondays this season. Normally the pool is closed on Mondays for cleaning and other necessary maintenance. This season we are going to try to work around this to give residents more time at the pool. Happy swimming! The Fourth of July celebration will take place on Thursday, and as in years past, will be hosted by the LOFS Lions on the Clubhouse grounds. The event will kick off with a parade beginning at noon that will start at South Lake Shore Drive and end at the Clubhouse parking lot. I am requesting that there be no throwing of water of any kind from the parade marchers or spectators, and please be careful when tossing and collecting candy. The fireworks display, presented by Melrose Pyrotechnics, will begin at dusk on July 4. The fireworks will again be shot off over the lake from the Clubhouse grounds. The Clubhouse and upper grounds will be closed all day while the fireworks are set up. I ask that all residents abide by the fireworks resolution. The resolution is in accordance with Indiana State law and prohibits the use of fireworks in LOFS except during prescribed times. A copy of the resolution is available on the web site at www.LOFS.org. The POA Board of Directors has approved charging a $5 fee to all vehicles without POA stickers entering into the Rick Cleveland community between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on July 4th. The Fire Force will be collecting the fee. A reminder to residents who are renting golf carts and using them to get around the community during the Fourth of July holiday: If you are going to do this, you must purchase a temporary golf cart permit from the POA office. The fee for this permit is $25 and it is good for three days. If you are caught driving one of these rental carts without a temporary permit, you will be issued a citation with a fine that will cost more than the permit fee. I want everybody to have a great July 4 and I encourage all to be careful and have a SAFE celebration. Have a safe and happy Fourth! Here is just a little explanation of what goes on inside our walls. The employees at the gate check in each person entering the community. During this time, they request last names or destinations for each person entering. Then, as the person is driving away, they copy down the license plate information for that vehicle entering. Now of course, a majority of the employees working the gate will begin to remember those entering and will not ask for a name or destination, but this does not mean a person should just assume they remember and drive through. On an average day, this department signs in roughly 2,500 visitors, which is a lot if you think back to what information they are gathering. Now think about this: some of those people need directions, so the employees will give them The Boone Grove boy’s golf outing will be held on Sunday, July 14, at the Lakes of the Four Seasons golf course. The day includes a hot dog lunch at 1 p.m., shotgun start at 2 p.m., and a steak dinner immediately afterwards. The cost is $45 for LOFS members, $75 for adult nonmembers, and $45 for junior golfers. The fee includes cart, greens fees, lunch, steak dinner, and range balls. To make a reservation, call Dawn Bobrowski at 219-405-3986 or Joanna Shaffer-Judy at 219-863-9775. Reserva-tions may also be done at the LOFS Pro Shop. We will accept individual golfers. Reserve early to guarantee your spot. Boone Grove golf scramble accepting reservations turn-by-turn instructions or a little piece of paper detailing how to get somewhere. There are occasions, however, when one of the employees at the main gate of the community may ask to see a driver’s license of a person coming in. We do this for several reasons; namely, the person signing in provided a name that is, or sounded fictitious at the time, like “Barney to Rubble.” Yes, it has been used a lot. Sometimes it is because the person entering may not be speaking clearly enough to get the correct spelling of their last name, or, the person entering is known to not have a valid driver’s license from past dealings, or does not meet the age requirement for driving on the streets within the Lakes of the Four Seasons. The POA made a ruling that states anyone driving a vehicle on the streets of the Lakes of the Four Seasons MUST have a valid state driver’s license. Now some people are under the assumption that they can drive a motor scooter on our streets without a license if that scooter is under 50cc. While it is true that you can drive a scooter under 50cc without a license outside the community, that ruling does not apply to our streets. Golf Cart Seating We have all seen people on golf carts driving all over the area, and with 4th of July, and the Thursday Night concerts, we are going to see a lot more, which means it’s a good time to cover some of the standing rules for golf carts that must be followed. A person must be at least sixteen (16) years of age to operate any motorized vehicle, including a golf cart, within Lakes of the Four Seasons. This golf cart operator must also possess and be able to produce a current, valid driver’s license upon request. Golf carts with a single forward facing bench seat are allowed no more than three riders: the operator, and two passengers. No one is allowed to stand up on a golf cart while it is in motion. Passengers are not allowed to stand up and hang on to the rear of the cart while it is in motion. Passengers are not allowed to sit on the front edge (facing driver) of the golf cart. Golf carts that have a rear facing bench seat are allowed to carry additional passengers, as long as they are properly seated and they are secured by a seat belt. Please understand the seat belt is a state law enacted last year and will be enforced by the officers of this community. No more than two, or if enough room, three passengers are allowed to ride in a rear facing bench seat. At NO TIME will a passenger be allowed to kneel in any seat, sit on another passenger’s lap, or stand on any portion of a moving golf cart. I know I keep covering the ‘standing on a golf cart’ issue, but it is something we are constantly dealing with. We want people to be safe when enjoying an amenity out here, and if that means Security has to the be the proverbial “Bad Guy” to do that then so be it. Holy Spirit Church is now accepting registrations through Friday, July 5, for its annual Vacation Bible School, which will be held the week of July 15 through 19. The Indiana Office of Tourism Development has unveiled an innovative curriculum resource for fourth-grade teachers titled, “Visit Indiana: 4th Grade Social Studies.” The history of Indiana is a required topic for all Indiana fourth-grade social studies classes. In the fall of 2012, a group of teachers and their fourth-graders tackled the economic driver question: “How can we as Indiana travel agents, help promote business and tourism in Indiana?” The six-week course chal- lenged students to work in teams, research geography, integrate map reading, examine weather and climate patterns, solve mathematical questions related to travel, and learn the history of their selected Indiana territory. The curriculum is designed to be turn-key, and a toolkit for the curriculum is available at no cost to teachers at www. visitindianateachers.com. The kit offers an overview and resources toward teaching the course, and IOTD will work closely with schools. However, I would like to use this section to sincerely thank the Lakes of the Four Seasons community and the large show of support in lending a hand after the June 12 storm. The storm wreaked havoc on the golf course, snapping or uprooting dozens of trees, the night before the golf course’s two biggest golf events of the season with our Member– Guest Invitational’s for both women and men. It’s a rare occurrence to see the type of damage that the golf course sustained during that night. What’s just as rare is the enormous show of support of LOFS residents and golfers who just began showing up that morning, chainsaws and work gloves in hand, asking where help was needed for the maintenance crew and golf shop staff, in the process of clearing downed timber from the golf course. At dawn Thursday morning, the extent of the damage was revealed, and the timing of the storm was such that the Women’s Invitational had no chance at continuing as planned and had to be rescheduled to a later date. Furthermore, the chances of the Men’s Invitational on the following day, Friday, had also looked like a grim possibility. About two hours into the tree-clearing process, the first of the LOFS volunteers began showing up out of the blue ready to work, and around two hours thereafter we had counted nearly 70 volunteers from the LOFS community involved in the cleanup process. By 5 p.m. that afternoon, with the help of those volunteers, golf maintenance and the golf shop staff were able to clear enough timber to make the course safe enough to play. We had done nearly the impossible, allowing us to reopen the doors within 24 hours after the storm had hit. I want to personally thank each and every volunteer from the golf membership to the community, as well as the LOFS staff, for putting in the extra effort to do in 12 hours what would almost certainly had taken more than a week, based on the sheer number of trees the storm had affected. This season 4th of July falls on a Thursday. What this means for the golf course is Thursday to Sunday will be considered a four-day weekend, with member tee-times before 11 a.m. each of those days. I would like to stress the importance of making sure you have reserved a teetime in advance, with any rental carts reserved if planning on playing throughout this period of the month, as tee-times will go fast if the weather cooperates with the golf course. I would like to give a special thanks to each golf member and their guests for participating in the Men’s Golf Association’s MemberGuest Invitational this year, and understanding the extreme circumstances that had to be worked around. This event takes a lot of effort to coordinate and we strive for perfect execution from start to finish each and every year. We hope that everyone had a great experience this year and we look forward to seeing everyone and their guests back in 2014. With the unfortunate timing of Mother Nature’s wrath, the Women’s Golf Association Member-Guest Invitational has been rescheduled to Thursday, July 11, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Wow, was that a powerful storm! The Lakes of the Four Seasons House & Garden Club’s May meeting was filled with the excitement of members anxiously waiting to hear about the success of the annual plant sale. Many of you know from reading past articles that one of last year’s projects was the outside lighting at the Clubhouse, which allows residents and guests to enjoy the beautiful landscaping as they enter the Clubhouse Restaurant in the evening. One of our bigger projects this year will be to add illumination lighting in another area of the community so another enchanting garden can be enjoyed after dark. Jill Hayman Aponte entertained us once again as only she could. With her captivating voice, she serenaded us with Teachers Pet, What Ever Will Be Will Be, Red Red Robin, and Crazy, by Patsy Cline. Not only does she have an amazing voice, her presence is so welcoming. She has such a wonderful sense of humor and undoubtedly loves what she does. She has helped with the preparation of family meals since she was old enough to reach the kitchen counter. She has always been fascinated by the way the different components of a meal come together and the different ways to present them attractively. Kiest was recently inducted into the Porter County Technology Honor Society as a result of her work in culinary arts. She is currently scheduled to begin Pastry Arts classes on August 5 at The Chef’s Academy in Indianapolis. She’ll also be competing in the Top Teen Talent cooking competition on June 15 in Morrisville, NC. First prize is a full scholarship to The Chef’s Academy. Kiest knows that this competition will be difficult, but has studied and practiced very hard with the help and support of her family. Kiest has already reserved an apartment in Indianapolis and submitted employment applications to a number of restaurants near her school. Each day, children will learn about some of the anchor stories of the Bible through video or live storytelling, crafts, snacks, and games. The focus each day will be on one main principle, or Bottom Line. The class will explore how, throughout time, God has been pursuing a relationship with us. By the end of the week, children should have a context of the bigger story of God and how everyone is a part of it. To protect yourself and your passengers, do some research before you head out. Always check local weather conditions before departure. TV and radio forecasts can be a good source of information. If you notice darkening clouds, volatile and rough changing winds, or sudden drops in temperature, play it safe by getting off the water. One of the most important parts of boating safety is to use your common sense. This means operating at a safe speed at all times, especially in crowded areas. Be alert at all times, and steer clear of large vessels and watercraft that can be restricted in their ability to stop or turn. Also, be respectful of buoys and other navigational aids, all of which have been placed there for one reason only- to ensure your own boating safety. Did you know that the ma- Kids needed to assemble mission craft kits Crown Point First United Methodist Church has a new summer program called “Kid’s Mission Camp,” which runs the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 10 a.m. until noon. Snacks, drinks, and a light lunch are provided, and there is no cost. This program is for children of all ages. The children will learn about missions by assembling craft kits that will be distributed on the island of Roatan, Honduras. The craft kits will be going into “Friendship Boxes” that the mission team will distribute throughout the island. The church is located at 352 South Main Street in Crown Point. IU requiring students to take financial literacy class Nationally, the average college student will graduate owing almost $27,000 in student debt, a 40% jump since 2002. According to Indiana University Director of Student Literacy Phil Schuman, the most important thing a grad can do is get a job, even if it’s not in the student’s field of interest. IU is now requiring incoming students to take a 90-minute online financial literacy class, as studies show 45% haven’t learned about budgeting and finances at home. jority of drowning victims after a boating accident are the result of not wearing a lifejacket? Make sure that your family and friends aren’t part of this statistic by assigning and fitting each member of your onboard team with a lifejacket prior to departure. Practice boating safety at all times by saving the alcohol for later. The probability of being involved in a boating accident doubles when alcohol is involved, and studies have also shown that the effect of alcohol is exacerbated by external effects such as sun and wind. If you’re going to be in and around the water, proper boating safety means knowing how to swim. Local organizations such as the American Red Cross and others offer training for all ages and abilities; check to see what classes are offered in your area. Beginning boaters and experienced experts alike need to be familiar with boating safety rules of operation. Boater education requirements vary by state; some require validated completion of at least one boating safety course. Regardless of your individual state’s requirements, it’s always important to be educated, aware, and prepared for every circumstance that might arise. We offer two boating classes a year that are held at the Clubhouse. Call the Lakes Department if you are interested in attending one. Take advantage of a free Vessel Safety Check from the David Taylor $339,900 US Coast Guard Auxiliary. They offer complimentary boat examinations to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. Free of charge, they’ll provide a specialist to check out your boat and make helpful boating safety tips and recommendations.
