Monthly Update Golf Course Maintenance Lakes of the Four Seasons By Doug Weiss, Golf Course Superintendent May has finally arrived and the weather is starting to be consistently warmer. The cool nights and warm days combined with the occasional rain is perfect for cool season grass to really start to grow. I like to call it the growing weeks, when the grass is cut on Monday and by Thursday it looks like a forest. Typically it only last for about two weeks in early May. During a normal week we mow the rough two-anda-half times, green and tee banks twice, and tees, collars, approaches, and fairways three times per week. The rough mowers are set to cut at two inches. Tees, collars, fairways, and approaches are cut at 9/16 of an inch. Greens are cut at 1/8 of an inch every day but Monday, unless there is a special event. The golf course is lucky to have the best equipment of any golf course in the area, including the local high end private clubs, which makes it possible to keep up with the rapid growth. The spring projects list We will keep the instructor to child ratio to a minimum to ensure safety, skill learning, Monday and fun. The driving range tee is filling in nicely. I have over-seeded and fertilized it several times this spring. The surrounding area has also been graded and seeded. I am hopeful that the tee will be open well before member guest day. All of the trenches from last fall’s drainage tiles and irrigation projects have been filled, seeded, and covered with a matting. Number five continues to be a work in progress. Due to the extreme wetness of the area I am planning to put cobble stone in the area between the approach and fairway. The ditch between the cart paths has to be cleaned out to allow the water to flow out quickly. Lastly number 14; the bunker on the left side of Local resident Koester inducted into Basketball Hall of Fame Don Koester, a resident of Lakes of the Four Seasons for 37 years, was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on March 25. Koester officiated high school and small college basketball for 32 years. Over his career, he refereed 16 sectional, 11 regionals, six semi-states, and the 1978 State Finals. He also worked more than 50 holiday tournaments across the state. He was joined at his induction by Ethel, his wife of 59 years, and 19 other family members and friends. the fairway has been filled and seeded. The irrigation has been fixed and working properly. The fairway has been seeded. The retention pond still has to dry out before it can be properly graded and seeded. I am looking forward to the completion of all the projects and everything filled in the way it is supposed to be. I appreciate your patience this spring with all that is going on. I know in the end we will have a better course and practice area; it is just going to take time and patience to see the results. Finally, our first greens committee meeting is Monday, May 4, at 6 p.m. at my shop. Please feel free to stop by and voice your opinion or ask any questions. Monthly Update Golf Course LOFS Fire Auxiliary Maintenance Lakes of the Four Seasons 2015-16 LOFS phonebooks are in Every two years, the Lake of the Four Seasons Fire Auxiliary publishes a new phone directory for the complex as a fundraiser. The ads in the book cover the cost of printing that allows us to keep the price of the book at $5, which becomes a donation to the Fire Department. We publish the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the residents who are either in the public phonebook, have been in the book before, or have requested to be in the book. The only way that we can make changes is if you contact us. Many people have given up their landlines, so we are more than willing to post your cell phones or e-mail addresses or list your number as NL (no listing). If you think any of these need changes, please contact Cathy at 219-988-5394 or via e-mail to cwaitk@aol.com. Phonebooks can be pur- chased at the POA office and we thank you for your continued support. 2 May 2015 LOFS Seasonal Monthly Update POA Community Manager Lakes of the Four Seasons POA dues for 2015 were due March 2, with a grace period until May 1. If you have not paid this year’s dues, please make arrangements as soon as possible. Dues not paid by May 1 of each year are considered delinquent and there will be a $50 late fee charged. The Board of Directors approved a motion to deactivate the bar codes after May 1 in accord with LOFS by-laws. It’s that time of the year again for mowing, trimming, and other maintenance throughout the community Monthly Update GolfOperations Services Golf Lakes of the Four Seasons By Paul Boris, Director of Golf Mother Nature has been a tease during the month of April yet again; however, the warmer days are coming in larger numbers more and more frequently. As always, we try to accommodate all resident golfers interested in playing, even without a teetime, but this is not always possible despite our best efforts, if golfers show up without prior notice. With that said, we ask that all resident golfers call in advance for tee-times (219988-2201) as the golf course may get very busy with the start of scheduled league play and member events in the upcoming weeks. Residents may call 48 hours in advance for tee-time reservations and golf members may call two weeks in advance for Monday through Friday, and one week in advance for weekend and holidays. Please be aware of our basic golf course policies for golfers to avoid any complications during check-in by visiting our Guest Info Page at www.lofscc.org/guests. html to ensure you and your guests the best experience possible at our club. I want to remind residents before they start popping up everywhere that street pole signs and balloons are prohibited. Signs in the community are not permitted with the exception of ‘open house’ signs, which are only allowed on Saturdays and Sundays if the proper paperwork is filed. Political signs are also allowed if you abide per the resolution. The summer Concerts at the Clubhouse will begin on Thursday, June 4, with the Crawpuppies; they play rock and pop music. Just a reminder, please use the provided containers for your trash and recyclables as this helps with cleanup. Illegal Dumping Notice I am requesting that all residents refrain from dumping leaves, branches, and grass clippings in the POA greenspace areas. This means you do need to stop at each stop sign you approach and should be using proper hand signals to show intentions of turning. To those who drive the golf cart who are customized to drive faster than normal, remember you need to adhere to the speed limits of each roadway to avoid being stopped and possibly cited. Golf carts should also have working headlights and taillights to be driven on our streets at night. Loud music coming from golf carts is also beginning to be an issue within the community. The Lakes of the Four Seasons POA has created a fine to be issued when locating loud or obnoxious nuisances, which includes music. It is based on a 50foot principle, meaning that if an officer can hear your music as you are coming down the roadway either on a golf cart or in a vehicle, it is too loud and needs to be lowered. This fine starts at $100 when issued. Walking on Golf Course It is that time of year again when we either are finding people in the early mornings or just at dark walking on the cart paths of the golf course, and some of these people are even walking their dogs. Some people who are seen walking on the course are avid golfers who have admitted to knowing that they should not be out there. For those who do not know the rule or who have missed past articles, the golf course is not to be used as a walking path for you, your animals, or as a biking path. Parents, please inform your children as well that they cannot use the course to play baseball, football, or soccer. The unnecessary damage being caused whether known or un-known falls under your financial responsibility to repair. Storage of Items This department has noticed there are some people storing all sorts of items in the rear areas of their homes, and some of these items are visible from the lakes, parks, golf course, and beaches. Please know that while some general items are acceptable, mass quantities of debris and equipment are not. For example, storing numerous lawn mowers, scaffolding, rototiller, numerous ladders, spare tires, or junk vehicles or golf carts is not allowed and subject to fines under the Covenants of the Lakes of the Four Seasons. Officers will continue to check these areas throughout the year and will enforce the rule with citations as necessary. Walking Dogs While checking the community, I have noticed people out walking their dogs, which is great, minus the fact I do not see them picking up after their dogs “use of the grass”. If you are out walking your dog, it is only right to remove the waste left behind by your dog so the resident who lives in that home doesn’t accidentally step in to a surprise. It is not that difficult to carry a small bag in your hand especially if it means showing respect for properties of the others around you. This brings me to my next point of keeping your dog leashed when you are off your property. By allowing a pet to roam your property URN BURNS unattended, and the property of others places, you are in violation of the Lakes of the Four Seasons Covenants, and citations can and will be issued accordingly. You also need to know that there is a leash law in both Lake and Porter Counties, and we have at times informed these counties of the continuous violations made by some of our residents. The Lakes of the Four Seasons has been and will keep enforcing Covenant 7.4, which states, “No animals shall be kept in the subdivision, except the usual and non-dangerous household pets. Pets must be leashed or under equivalent control at all times. The Property Owners Association shall have the authority to make reasonable rules and regulations regarding the control of household pets, including, but not limited to the removal of animal waste.” Branch collection reminder Branch collections for the Lake County portion of the community end on May 1. Branch collections for the Porter County portion of the community will begin on May 6 and continue until the final date of May 15. Winfield/LOFS Chamber announces annual scholarship essay contest The Winfield/LOFS Chamber of Commerce will award two $1,000 scholarships to local high school graduates who plan to continue their education at a college, university, or technical school in the next academic year. Property Owners must have their Lot Cards available when charging to their lot at the LOFS Restaurants May 2015 5 LOFS Seasonal Monthly Update By Timburley Ecklund, Secretary Richard Cusick, a master chef, was the guest speaker at the LOFS House & Garden Club March meeting. Some of you may have visited Richard’s store “Evolution Artisan Confections” located at 901 Calumet Avenue in Valparaiso. I’d like to share a little knowledge that Richard shared with us. It takes four to seven years for a cocoa tree to produce fruit. There are 60 to 80 beans in a pod. The pollination and harvesting of the pods are all done by hand. The annual salary of a cocoa farmer is $600, the same price to purchase one 120 pound sack of cocoa beans. That’s a lot of work for so little money. Do you know that in some areas of West Africa you are only allowed to speak to the government about cocoa? It was amazing to learn all that goes into making chocolate from cocoa beans. I took notes but I know I would not do it justice if I try to teach you what we learned. Richard also spoke of his lovely wife Susie. He said that her presence at work makes it such a wonderful place to be. They have been together since the age of 17. He said, “She catches me staring at her all the time.” This of course made all the ladies ‘ooh and ahh’, includ- ing me. It was so refreshing to hear someone speak so truly and deeply about the love of their life. I asked him for a picture to go with the article. His response was, “No, I’m an ugly dude.” So I decided to visit the store and purchase some chocolates in hopes I could snap a picture. No such luck; Richard was busy in back. However, I did meet his lovely wife Susie, who was everything Richard said. Meetings are held the last Tuesday of each month at noon in the clubhouse ballroom. Call Timburley at 219-988-5410 or Patricia at 219-662-4162 with any questions. Don’t forget to come up to the Annual Plant Sale Saturday, May 9, at 9 a.m. in the lower level Clubhouse parking lot, rain or shine. I’m sure you’ll find a wonderful present for Mother’s Day! “Little Hands in the Garden” will take place on Thursday, June 11, at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Sandy Beach in Lakes of the Four Seasons. House and Garden Club members want to encourage interest in gardening as a community project. Participants will plant a Fairy Garden under the direction of Garden Club members. If you have a floating dock, make sure you cover the sides with treated lumber and covering the exposed foam on the bottom with 1”x2” welded wire can best protect the Styrofoam (chicken wire is not strong enough and will be chewed and destroyed by muskrats). Coating Styrofoam with a light layer of cement, followed by paint, may also be effective. It may also be possible to encourage muskrats to leave a pond by removing its food sources. Since muskrats are primarily herbivorous, an aquatic plant control program that targets some of their preferred foods. Plants containing less starch such as rushes may have little to offer muskrats compared to cattails and lilies. You may wish to use a professional to deal with these rodents. Trapping in neighbor- hoods or public lakes can be dangerous. Most traps could hurt or kill pets and other wild animals including humans if not properly installed. Trapping muskrats alive is not easy to do. Relocating them is not always the answer either. If you remove a muskrat from its home, there isn’t much time to find and create a new den in time for winter while battling other muskrats for the new territory. Over the winter months, Lakes of the Four Seasons will Monthly Update May 1-15 Monday 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. May 16-31 Monday 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Tuesday-Friday 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Saturday & Sunday 6:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Lakes Department Lakes of the Four Seasons By Ed Spanopoulos, Lakes Director The muskrat is not actually a rat, but is considered to be a rodent because of its teeth: four large, yellowish incisors in the front of its mouth. This animal also has flat molars for grinding vegetation. Muskrats average about 2 pounds in weight and up to 2 feet in length, including a vertically flattened 8 to 12 inch tail. Their fur is waterproof and generally dark brown on the back and sides, becoming light grayish-brown on the belly. Muskrats have lips that act as valves that close behind the front incisors that allow it to gnaw underwater. The musky scent comes from two perineal glands located beneath the skin at the base of the tail. This musk is used during the breeding season to mark an area. Muskrats are polygamous and begin breeding in early March and continue throughout the summer. Populations can build up quickly, as a pair of muskrats can produce four to five litters with five to seven young per litter each year. Muskrats are mostly active at night but some residents have seen them out during the morning hours feeding on lawns. Primarily vegetarians, they eat plants such as cattails, water lilies, bulrushes and many more. The habit of making tunnels in the banks of ponds and streams causes conflict between humans and muskrats. Muskrat dens dug into your shoreline can cause voids in your yard which could cause injury if stepped in. These issues could also cause dams structures to become compromised which pose a danger to our community and others downstream. LOFS Residents are responsible for the upkeep of their shorelines. It is your decision on the type of shoreline you want to build. Riprap along the dam face or shoreline can deter muskrats from burrowing into your property. Riprap should be at least 3 feet below water level and extend to at least 1 foot above the water level. This technique can be used for dams that are already constructed as well as 4 Seasons, LLC Property Maintenance Systems • Commercial Commercial••Residential Residential• •Industrial Industrial • Apartments • Townhomes • Condos C • OFFICE LEANING /D AY PORTER SERVICES EEKLY LAWN MOWING • TW URF WEED CONTROL • GUTTER & DOWNSPOUT CLEANING • SPRING & F ALL C LEAN U P • LANDSCAPING • PAINTING /TRIMMING • SEEDING /SOD R • SNOW EMOVAL & SALTING • CORE AERATION • PHOSPHORUS FREE FERTILIZER • TREE REMOVAL /STUMP GRINDING • LOT CLEARING /M OWING • BUSHH OG M OWING • SCRAP ETAL HAULING M • PROPERTY CLEANOUTS • BLACKTOP SEALCOATING Licensed •Insured Bonded• Professional • Insured • Professional “Maintaining Your Home or Business Property All 4 Seasons” Indiana State Chemist Approved Licensed Turf Applicator Member Midwest Regional Turf Foundation, Purdue University Phone: 662-7351 !"#!$!%&'#()*#+$, $!-#%$(./01+$, Since 1981 We Specialize In Engine Repair State-Of-The-Art Equipment • Family Owned & Operated 8am - 5pm M-F 5024 E 81st Ave. Merrillville I N C.
