Program French Export Selections @ MaMA 2013 Wednesday, October 16th, 2013 CHRISTINE SALEM 19:30 to 20:10 - La Cigale Christine Salem is one of Maloya’s rare female voices, and a strong and charismatic personality. Accompanied by her favourite instrument, the kayanm, her deep voice projects Creole, Malagasy, Comorean or Swahili songs which are carried along by a gutsy Maloya, subtly mixing Indian Ocean music with African rhythms. She has been writing since the age of 12, but most of her songs are born on stage during moments of intense creativity: lyrics flowing from musical trances or laments to the tune of furious rhythms. 21:00 to 21:40 - Les Trois Baudets “It’s beautiful!” That’s what we mean when we played it consistently for the first time the music Maissiat. Her music is rooted in a sophisticated pop that gives the dark trappings of sensuality. Generous in her music appeals as in freedom it offers to those who want to get caught: The voice waves, is several serious talks or flies very high and here the text breaks into possible tightens bluntly, is blurs again. The setting is made of pianos hug and talk, deep and languid rhythms that get excited and become epileptic, keyboards that blow hot and cold. The band draws its inspiration from traditional Irish music, country music and blues; using instruments like the double bass, harmonica and kazoo, while adding in sounds from typewriters, hotel bells and the likes. Their first EP ‘Gee Whiz but this is a lonesome town’ (2007) was a success which sold 170.000 copies worldwide and led the band on a 300 shows tour in 20 countries. 2011 saw the band release their debut album ‘The Missing Room’ and founding their own label Air Rythmo. The band released their latest album ‘Fugitives’ in 2013. After meeting in San Francisco a few years ago this dynamic duo were only waiting for a breach in the calendar to start a project together. The time is now. Created in San Francisco, Paris, and Berlin, Burning House’s debut album - released in 2013 - is a radical and unprecedented collage of relentless hip hop, raw funk, contagious club and brash jazz. The first album of Fortune “Staring At The Ice Melt” was released in 2010 by Disque Primeur / EMI and was praised by critics in France and widely playlisted on radio in England. The group is produced mainly in France and “Blackboard”, the band’s second album, was recorded and produced between Paris and Rome, in conditions close to live. The image around the second disc was entrusted to contemporary artist Eva Taulois. ST. LÔ FORTUNEBAND.FR 23:30 to 00:20 - Le Backstage O’Sullivans Beyond futuristic blues-rock, electro bursts and haunted hip hop, St. Lô returns to a classic fusion of elements, with an audacity and a certain elegance. Fly to the intertwining melodies and the voice of the singer Ms. Walidah (aka Hanifah Walidah), dazzling, deep, holder of generations of soul. Between Brooklyn and Brittany, the band makes its own way through an urban, poetic and hypnotic territory. Alchemy is a mystery and St. Lo knows its secret. The group reconciles subtly rhythmic hip hop and orchestration, triviality and good manners. If we must discuss influences, we’d say: Alain Bashung for his experimental side, The Beastie Boys for their fractious hip hop, and Jean Rochefort for his humour, his poetry and even a physical resemblance. The band have released their first LP ‘Je te tuerai un jeudi’ in 2011. ASKEHOUG.COM 20:10 to 20:50 - Le Divan du Monde Saint Michel is walking in the footsteps of Phoenix, Air, Etienne de Crecy…who all come from the same place: Versailles and made it big abroad! Together, Philippe Thuillier and Emile Larroche create an electro pop music, sexy and melancholic at the same time. After releasing a first EP ‘I Love Japan’, the French electro-pop duo was back with 4 remixes of their single ‘Katherine’ included in their EP released in September 2012. The band’s new album ‘Making Love & Climbing’ will be released in October 2013. Rami Khalifé and Francesco Tristano met in New York where they were studying at the prestigious Juilliard School. Being almost as assiduous in clubbing than studies, the two began an affair with electronic music. Things started shaping-up when Aymeric Westrich sealed their union under the auspices of an attraction for experimentation. Aufgang is right between electro and classical music. Listening to Aufgang collectively or individually, on a dancefloor or in a living-room is an ever evolving experience: a track can go through many different stages, having many different layers. Only at the very beginning of her career, Owlle is already being compared to the likes of Lykke Li and Bat For Lashes and captures the listener’s imagination with her magnetic, warm and luminous voice. 2013 is a busy year for Owlle who is currently composing her new album. They liked the idea of surprising audiences when coming on stage, they liked the idea of being an androgynous band. And it works. It works because of the rock they produce, very reminiscent of the 1960’s and 1970’s, to which they’ve brought a modern touch. In 2012, the band released their first album ‘Please her please him’. 2013 will be spent touring, including a show at the Berlin Music Week and much more... SPITZER KPSULE.ME/THEODOREPAULGABRIEL 22:30 to 23:10 - Le Divan du Monde These two brothers are evidently really close partners in crime. They have been guided and cherished by Les Nuits Sonores, an ever-expanding family based in Lyon. The pure and powerful sound of early 90s electric guitars, indie rock fanzines, long hair and then suddenly onto cold subversive techno that makes your heart race and machine funk that brings you out in a cold sweat. They’re also part of the Myspace generation, this is how they ended up remixing tracks by international popstars such as Kylie Minogue and Sally Shapiro and going on a world tour. In 2012, Spitzer released their first album ‘The Call’. If her influences are beyond and at the other side of the Channel, the singer chose to compose and write her lyrics in French. Robi sings with a soft and deep voice (one may think of Barbara) on a melody full of sharp bass lines, about love, revenge, and the time going by. Y.A.S. was more than a project, it was a symbol: that of a potential bridge between two worlds that media, dance floors, ears, and mentalities on both ends never imagined coming together. Now back to using her real name, Yasmine Handam has released a self-titled album followed by ‘Ya Nass’ in 2013. But after a four-year wait his new album is here, completed in close collaboration with Antoine Guillet (BB Brunes, Julien Doré, Mademoiselle K). In ‘Tomorrow’s World’, Jean-Benoit and Lou write all the music together. Their album is full of cinematic love songs - influenced by the likes of Factory Floor, Angelo Badalamenti and Lil Louis. The chemistry is undeniable. ‘We wanted to do just one track but ended up doing 11’, says Jean-Benoit.
