RETURN OF THE MASTERS
COULD BE A COINCIDENCE, but while Norway was last year marking the
100th anniversary of Norwegian animation, Norwegian director Rasmus A.
Sivertsen’s fully-animated The Christmas of Solan and Ludvig became No.
1 on the 2013 charts, taking 854,395 admissions and supporting the 22.8%
local market share.
NORWEGIANS LIKE ADVENTURE for the whole family, and there is plenty
in this year’s line-up, for instance when Captain Sabertooth – Norwegian
singer-songwriter Terje Formoe’s 1989 pirate figure – is eying a new heist
in Lisa Marie Gamlem and John Andreas Andersen’s Captain Sabertooth
and the Lama Rama Treasure.
IT IS DESTINED TO BECOME a blockbuster, most likely in the company of
Arild Fröhlich’s adaption of Norwegian author Jo Nesbø’s children’s book
Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder, not to mention Peter Flinth’s Beatles, taking
Norwegian author Lars Saabye Christensen’s coming-of-age story from
the 1960s to the screen.
Having celebrated her 75th birthday, Norway’s leading international
actress-director Liv Ullmann is ready with an English-language film from
August Strindberg’s Miss Julie. Another screen veteran, Hans Petter Moland,
has also worked with an international cast – Stellan Skarsgård, Bruno Ganz
– for his 11th movie, the action comedy In Order of Disappearance, which
will compete in Berlin. In 1001 Gram Bent Hamer, whose films have been
launched in more than 40 countries, sends a woman scientist to a seminar
in Paris discussing the actual weight of a kilo.
A DIRECTOR GRADUATE from La Fémis in Paris, Eskil Vogt is best known
for writing scripts with Joachim Trier – now he has signed his feature debut,
Blind, which has been selected for both Sundance and Berlin.
BOBBIE PEERS – Palme d’Or winner in Cannes for his short, Sniffer – has
made his first feature, Dirk Ohm–The Illusionist, based on a real-life event.
After their 2013 premieres, Erik Poppe and Erik Skjoldbjærg have also found
subjects in history for their new films, Poppe’s The King’s Choice is a World
War II drama, Skjoldbjærg’s Pyromaniac about an arsonist in the late 1970s.

The road to real love may prove unpredictable and painful. Sometimes only singer/songwriters
like Jan Eggum and Halvdan Sivertsen are able to find the words to express the yearning,
love and passion at work. With their evergreen songs, cinema musical All Kinds of Love is a
romantic story about five lonely people in a quiet apartment building in Oslo. One day it turns
out these neighbours have been harbouring passion for each other for years. Once the silence
is broken, sweet panic breaks loose, and before the last summer night is over, the neighbours
realize that five is one person too many.

Beatles is the ultimate coming-of-age story. Four teenage boys are growing up in Oslo at the
time when Beatlemania hits Norway. Kim, Gunnar, Ola and Seb each take on one of the Fab
Four’s names, and they plan to start their own outfit, The Snafus. Like many teenage dreams,
this one never comes to fruition, but the need to save up for instruments becomes the drive
behind much of what they do as they blunder through their formative years, struggling with
archaic textbooks and ancient teachers, discovering girls, being beaten up by rival gangs,
experimenting with alcohol, and finding their footing as activists.
PETER FLINTH graduated from the Danish Film School together
with fellow director students Per Fly, Thomas Vinterberg,
Ole Christian Madsen and Maria Sødahl. Director of short
films, feature films, TV movies and commercials. First feature
was the medieval action adventure Eye of the Eagle starring
Norwegian actor Bjorn Floberg. Followed by the family adventures The Olsen Gang Jr. and The Fakir. Changed genre
and location for the next movies, the thrillers Wallander and
Bengtzon in Sweden – and the two-picture epic based on
Jan Guillou’s best-selling novels about the medieval Knight
Templar Arn. Beatles is Peter Flinth’s first movie in Norway.

Chasing the Wind is a humorous and melancholy love story that shows how communicating
with your own family is the most difficult communication of all. The film’s humor emerges from
the frustration and anger the characters feel when they can neither talk to nor understand
each other. The melancholy is connected to their realization that the longer they wait to tell
the truth to each other, the more painful it becomes.
(1972) feature film debut, North
(2009), won the international critics’ FIPRESCI prize at the
Berlinale, and the Best New Narrative Filmmaker prize at
Tribeca Film Festival. The film sold to over thirty territories.
Langlo comes from a background in documentaries and has

In this sequel to the epic splatter zombie saga from 2009, Martin has to prove that there is
more devilry in Northern Norway than even Nazi zombies are prepared for. And so far, the
zombie war has only just begun in a film in which crushed bones and dead blood has no time
to coagulate before it’s alive again. Old hatred never rusts.

The world described in this tale is not at all like our world. The dungeons are gloomier, the rich
and their sons meaner, the parents much more self-centered, the crazy inventors’ inventions
crazier. And the beast that lives in the sewer system, brooding on revenge, could easily be a
giant anaconda. In this world, the friendship between two lonely children is perhaps even more
important than it is in our world. Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder is the story about two lonely
(and a bit weird) children, that finds friendship, by helping Doctor Proctor to get his recognition.

the Tromsø Island. It puzzles the police and the investigator Aslak Eira, of Sami heritage, that

disappears. The struggle to save this student’s life and to reveal the identity of the murderer

A country estate in Ireland in 1880s. Over the course of one midsummer night, in an atmosphere of wild revelry and loosened social constraints, Miss Julie and John, her father’s valet,
dance and drink, charm and manipulate each other. She, all hauteur longing for abasement;
he, polished but coarse – both united in mutual loathing and attraction. By turns seductive
and bullying, savage and tender, their intimacy leads to desperate plans and vision of a life
together… Unsure if the morning brings hope or hopelessness, Julie and John find their escape
in a final act as sublime and horrific as anything in Greek tragedy.

Staying Alive is a drama/comedy about modern divorce. About how everyday life is turned upside down, and the struggle to maintain normality. To
make it through each day, to adjust, and to want the best in spite of all the
chaos a divorce creates. We follow our main character Marianne through
half a year; from when her safe and predictable life comes to an end, and
on her winding, difficult path in search of a new existence.
Director and screenwriter Sara Johnsen has the following poem as
inspiration for her next feature Things we won’t do for Love:
“I wish I was your mother, I wish I’d been your father
And then I would have seen you, would have been you as a child
Played houses with your sisters and wrestled with all your brothers
And then who knows, I might have felt a family for a while.” Ian Hunter

The true story of an Argentinean family who lived
with Josef Mengele without knowing his true identity, and of the girl who fell in love with one of the
biggest criminals of all times.
Hedi Schneider steckt fest (WT) tells an imaginative and humourous story about how life can
slip out of control. Uli, Hedi and Finn are a happy,
loving family. They get by with various odd jobs,
and Hedi particularly uses humour to deal with
every unpleasant setback. But the moment she
begins to suffer from panic attacks out of the clear
blue, her everyday life suddenly comes unstuck. A
build-up of well-meant advice, hysterical parents,
bored therapists and unfulfilled wishes intensify,
creating a tragicomedy about fear and the influence of love.

Well-to-do tourists lose their dignity. Through a
“state of emergency”, a family on holiday come
into contact with human mechanisms that they
have never confronted before. They are now
forced to ascribe to themselves urges and instincts they’d learned to despise and credit only
to others.
Europe 1990, the Berlin wall has just crumbled: Katrine, raised in East Germany, now living in Norway
since more than 20 years, is a “war child”, the result
of a love relationship between a Norwegian woman
and a German occupation soldier. Katrine enjoys
a happy family life in Norway. But when a lawyer
asks her and her mother to witness in a trial against
the Norwegian state on behalf of the war children,
she resists. Gradually, a web of concealments and
secrets is unveiled, and her loved ones are forced
to take a stand: What carries more weight, the life
they have lived together, or the lie it is based on?
The film is set in the Guarani Indians’ unexplored
forest areas in Bolivia, where we follow the Spanish filmmaker Andres in his search for the circumstances surrounding a Swedish documentary film
made in the area a hundred years earlier. The result is a mystical, existential journey into the lives
of both the Indians and the filmmaker.

NORWEGIAN FILM INSTITUTIONS
Norwegian Film Institute
Film & Kino
The Norwegian Film Institute operates under the authority of the Norwegian Ministry of Culture and is the Norwegian government’s administrative
body for the film sector and advisor on film policy issues. The Board of the
Film Institute is appointed by the Ministry. The CEO is Mr Sindre Guldvog.
Film & Kino is a combination of a member organisation for Norwegian
municipalities and an industry organisation for the cinema and video industries. The organisation, which was established in 1917, administers the
Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation and also runs the Mobile Cinema.
The Norwegian Film Institute represents and promotes Norwegian feature
films, shorts, documentaries, games and TV-series at festivals and films
cultural events nationally and abroad, and provides statistics and facts about
Norwegian films and theatrical releases. The Norwegian Film Institute facilitates and promote Norway as an attractive location for foreign producers.
Around the world, cinemas are usually owned by private companies. In
Norway, however, most cinemas are owned by the municipalities. As a
member organization for the municipalities, Film & Kino is looking after
their interests concerning film, the running of cinemas and video activities.
Membership is open to all municipalities. The organization is governed by
a national convention with delegates from both the municipalities and the
cinema and video industries. As of 2013 the privately owned cinemas are
emerging, and they hold almost 60 per cent of the marked share. Due
to this development, Film & Kino will experience changes in the owner
structure in the coming years.
Public funding in 2014 for audiovisual development, production and marketing is approx. EUR 49 million. The Film Institute also offers grants,
training and talent development for the film industry.
The Norwegian Film Institute is located in the Film House in Oslo, and
is in charge of the Film Museum and the Cinemateque of Oslo. Through
our work, we provide knowledge and understanding of the Norwegian
film heritage.
The Norwegian Film Institute represents Norway at the Council of Europe’s
fund for co-production of film, Eurimages, as well as at the European
Audiovisual Observatory. The Institute participates in a number of international co-operative efforts for the audiovisual sector, including the
International Council for Educational Media, the European Film Academy,
European Film Promotion, Filmkontakt Nord and Scandinavian Films. Together with the National Library, the Norwegian Filminsitute is a member
of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).
Read more about Norwegian films at www.norwegianfilms.no and the
Norwegian Film database.
Helps ensure public access to new and relevant films
Film & Kino’s mission is to ensure the public of the entire country access
to new and relevant films, either through regular theatrical releases, at
festivals or through DVD. The organisation shall further both the big movie
theatre experience and a purposeful use of the DVD format, as well as
being a guarantor of quality and diversity.
Film & Kino administers a number of support initiatives for films. About
30 per cent of the films in regular theatrical release in Norway receive
support from these initiatives.
In 2011 all Norwegian movie theatres became digital. During the next few
years, the following up of the digitalising of Norwegian movie theatres will
be one of the most important tasks for the organisation.

Film & Kino administers the Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation,
which was established in 1970. Norwegian law instructs this foundation
to charge a certain percentage of cinema ticket sales as well as a levy on
video sales and rentals. Film & Kino’s activities for the cinema and video
industries are then financed by this foundation.
The Mobile Cinema
The Mobile Cinema is Film & Kino’s arrangement for the screening of films
in locations without a regular movie theatre. The Mobile Cinema brings
all necessary equipment and can screen films on all kinds of premises all
over the country.
Regional film funds and film centres
By the end of 2011 all districts in Norway, apart from Oslo, the capital, have
‘film centres’, ‘film funds’ and/or ‘film commissions’. They all have regional
as well as governmental support. The national goals are to stimulate
strengthened production infrastructure, professionality and continuity in
all parts of the production – and increased talent development.
82
There are eight film centres, six regional film funds and three regional film
commissions, of whom some are co-located regionally. In addition there
is a national film commission.
International Sami Film Centre serves the Sami population all over Norway
as well as those living in Sweden, Finland and Russia.
The Film Centres are based on cultural grounds. Their main mission is to
support development and production of short films and documentaries,
and to raise competence among professionals and spot, cultivate and
support young talents.
The Film Funds can support audiovisual productions of all genres and
formats, including international co-productions and video games. They are
not allowed (by the government) to contribute financially to the production of feature films for cinema that are supported by the Norwegian Film
Institute. Governmental support requires regional contribution with at least
the same amount of money to the fund. Furthermore the governmental
support cannot be spent on managing the organisation.
The Film Commissions are based on trade grounds, and offer facilitation
for foreign productions in their region. The Regional Film Commissions
collaborate with the national film commission – Film Commission Norway
(FCN)– who is an integral part of Norwegian Film Institute. FCN generate
to encourage and facilitate international film productions all over Norway,
and acts as a link between the national and the international film and
television industry.
