On average the number of competitors is the same, with some Feiseanna showing an increase. This could be due to the time of year they are held. Preliminary and Opens continue to be big. 1"t year Beginner Grade numbers are down while the other Grades remain stationary. All Feiseanna must comply with the "Costume Tick Box Rule" on adjudication sheets. There were no complaints brought to my attention this year. Questions came up regarding dates for the zAU Feiseanna lrish Arts Feis and De Nogla School Feis. Respectfu ly su bm itted, I -l Z*-,*r-n- 8*-*;A Bernadette Broderick Mid-Atlantic Liaison Representative - Drumcliffe Convention 2013 NAFC october LSth-2otn 2013 Atla nta, Georgia New England Regional Representative: Michael F. I have received no written complaints to date regarding the feiseanna held in our region during the past year. Via the regional seem to be message boards, I am aware of certain feiseanna anomalies, but these small details on the day that are worked out on site' There were 30 feiseanna scheduled to be held in our region in20t3, and that is up from the 29 held in 201,2. To date, 23 of them have already commenced, with 1 feis commencing today, and 6 more yet to be danced. 28 of the 30 feiseanna are hosted by TCRG's, with the remaining two feiseanna hosted by lrish Cultural Societies. Feis venues, in general, have stabilized in price, but are more price increased costly than ever before with few exceptions' For some, where the is dramatically, a new venue and a new date were sought out from the NAFC. This it now seemingly an annual challenge that feis committees might encounter and NAFC as an is a great comfort for our New England membership to know the these venue organization is willing to be flexible and work with them to overcome difficulties. Again, on behalf of the New England region, I would like to highly the commend and personally thank our Feis Registrar, Shannon Dayringer, and to be held and to NAFC for the flexibility that has allowed feiseanna to continue will have remain economically viable. As in previous years, by year end of 2ot3,l personally attended 2O or more New England Regional feiseanna, as well as approximately 15 or more non- regionalfeiseanna' New England still maintains a feis liaison system, where a regional member and An volunteers to attend a feis in order to assure that NAFC, Regional, IDTANA, "on the Coimisiun guidelines are adhered to. This continues to be an excellent from becoming a day,, way to resolve minor feis issues, and thus prevents them problem' the feis larger problem and a formal complaint issue. ln the event of a point out and liaison will work directly with the feis chair or feis committee to at the feis' resolve any issues that may have occurred or are presently occurring regarding To date in201-3,as mentioned previously, I have had no complaints glitch or two' New England Feiseanna. While at any event there can always be a on site, with some feiseanna having more than others, they have all been rectified dancing events' on the day, and this is a good thing for all parties involved in our however, The number of competitors in recent years has been on the decline, regional this year's feis numbers Seem to have somewhat stabilized at our is encouraging' feiseanna, with entry numbers about the same as 2O!2, which where while we are not back to 2oo7 /2008 levels, it would at least appear that start to we are now is stabilizing, and there is the hope that things will now will increase' improve and the number of beginners starting out in lrish Dancing had to extend A surprising number of feiseanna have noted that they have cap and their entry deadline date, and accept late entries in order to reach their have even to run the event without incurring a financial loss. Some feiseanna competitors to added additional competitions in the hopes of attracting more viable. lt would seem there is a trend of parents sending in remain economically received fewer their entries after the deadline date. ln one instance, the feis had with almost than 100 entries by their original deadline date, yet the feis ended up when the feis 500 competitors on the day. This can be problematic on the day adjudicator could need an additional musician, adjudicator or even an entire and panel. The general consensus I have heard from regional feis organizers our country teachers is that this seems to again reflect the economic uncertainty lt is again worth noting is presently facing, more so than any other single factor. activities. With that children today have so many choices as to extra-curricular in first generation lrishless lrish immigrants coming to America, and a decline the ethno-cultural American parents introducing their children to lrish Dancing, an after school extrabond is diminishing and we are being assimilated more into arts culture' While curricular cultural activity as opposed to an lrish performingattention to the stellar success of Riverdance and Lord of the Dance has drawn inclined to stay with the our curture and artform, non-rrish parents may not be as be for this year, and next year it dancing for the long term. lt is an activity that can has to work harder will be soccer, or marching band etc. Today's dancing teacher parent interested to attract students, and harder still to keep the dancer and the challenge' Working at enough to return the following year. This is a real-life sentiment in other feiseanna throughout the US, I have found this to be the I see as a stabilizing number regions as well, but overall I am encouraged by what of dancers, and hopefully as the economy rebounds, so will the number of children participating and staying long term in Irish Dance. Continuing on a positive note, over the past year, New England Regional Members have continued to notice the improved performance of the streamlined NAFC website, as well as a positive attitude to work with dancing teachers through their venue and date issues. They have found that the new feis registration process is a huge success, and continue to make very positive remarks to me regarding the present stewardship of the NAFC. The NAFC is now seen as a true working partner. On behalf of the New England Region, I would like to say "Thank You" for all your efforts in this regard. Presently, I am greatly looking forward to our second NAFC Dancing Championships to be held again in Orlando, Florida this coming February 15th and 1,6th 20t4. There was a great sense of comradery and excitement at last year's event and my hope would be that it will continue on at this year's prestigious event. I am presently active with the Music Scholarship Committee, and our goal is to expand and develop this competition to bring it on par with the dancing competitions. While there is more work to be done in this regard, especially in light of the lack of infrastructure within the traditional lrish music teaching community, I am confident that we can continue to make this competition more attractive to the feis musicians of the future. I would like to wish all those involved in the planning and development of this year's NAFC flagship event in Florida the best of luck for top class success! to today's Convention, and to working with all of you throughout the weekend to make this a productive Convention for all. Thank You for allowing me to represent New England and Thank you for your time and attention in making this presentation. I look forward Michael Fitzpatrick, ADCRG New England Regional NAFC Representative NAFC Summary Feis Report 2013 Region: Southern The Southern Region has 34 registered feiseanna for 2Al3,with25 completed so fur this year. There was an increase this year and the R.egion had 5 new feiseanna - Walsh Kelley School Feis, Holy Angels Feis, Greensboro City Feis all in North Carolina, Texas Capital Championships, and American Pride Feis which is inNashville. Of the Feis reports received, most feiseanna reported a successful feis financially with one saying it was not a success. Most feiseanna had approximately the same number of competitors as the previous year. We received reports from 307o of feiseanna in the region. Grade level exams continue to be offered at many feiseanna. These are usually offered the day before or day after the feis. In addition to the dance competitions, music competitions and workshops continue to be offered at many feiseanna to help promote Irish culture. The success continues for the back to back feiseannas in the region. One offered Maire Clerkin's play the night between the two feiseanna. Most Southern Region feiseanna had around 400 - 450 competitors with a couple of exceptions some having 550+, Texas feiseanna having in the 300's and New Orleans in the 100's. We look forward to 2074 and ending a successful 2013 inlrish dance in the region. As usual, we continue to get great volunteers that help make these feiseanna run successfully. Thank you all for the volunteer time you comrnit to Irish Dancing. Some adjustments could be helpful from a process perspective' positive Feedback: _Some reported that they had a great turn-out, including one of the o"tOoor f"isanna. The Irish Music Festival took place after feis competitions ended. Summer Feis is produced by an Irish Cultural orgatization, The Shamrock Club of Columbus. The Daughtersi of Erin ran an Irish Tea Room tent, serving traditional Irish breads, Barry's Teas, hot lunch items and they also hosted an Irish Baking competition. A candle Mass at 4pm on Saturday ended the feis and it was a great transition into the Irish Music Festival with 3 stages of live Irish music the rest of the day and evening. A11 the feis families were encouraged to stay the evening, for free. in offering Irish dance, music, and art competitions. For example, St. Louis is a predominantly French and German city. With competitions offered in all three since areas, they were able to provide more exposure to Irish traditions. Additionally, their event has free admission, they provided the city of St. Louis with an opportunity to enjoy Irish traditions and culture. Success was noted 2 Back to back success was noted. The decision to share a holiday weekend allowed the feisanna to share adjudicators and musicians, which played apart in continued success both financially and culturallY. Most feisanna reported small volume in music competitors (approx. 10), but the St Louis Arts Feis reported 859 dancers, and 105 music competitors' Financials: Based upon the information provided by the feisanna I spoke to or received a r.port to-, most stated that they are making less money than in the past and sponsors are gettingharderto find or are decreasingtheir support. A few feisannareported a financial loss and many feis organizers felt they were being negatively impacted by the wherever dates of other feis in the region. A11 said they continue to take steps to cut costs possible. Another continuing trend is registrations being made close to the date of the feis, rather than far in advance. A few saw increases in registration. One feis commented that they to made money, but not nearly as much as in past years especially since they opted increase the space to improve on the experience for those attending. They are finding more last minute registrations, making budgeting difficult' Others commented that many air fares were high, venue costs were higher and overall, venue and expenses are more challenging to manage. It is harder to find an affordable they added registration numbers have steadily declined over last 6 years. One feis said costs in increased additional vendors, and upped their fees a little to compensate for flights and venue. problems to Share: Some commented that there are too many local competitions, and th"y rr" r"h"d"t"d too close together, which impacts registration numbers. The 2 economic conditions for the middle class are grim, and many people do not have the discretionary funds to spend. Some vendors who said they were coming, but never showed to purchase certain costume items were very disappointed. up. Parents who had hoped The grade exams held the evening before with two examiners went longer than anticipated. The expectations of some of the upper grade examinees were also unrealistic. They are reconsidering whether to continue examining in a Feis context. The exams are not proving to be a profit center for the Feis. One feis reported that several parents approached the feis committee on separate occasions, to express their frustration with what they felt were fraternization issues between a judge and the TCRGs of a local dance school. The committee explained that they could not find any fraternization rules pertaining to judges when they are not seated at an active stage. Some parents complained that a judge was smoking within site of the dancer's in the warm-up area, andthat a package of cigarettes was laying in plain view on the judges table during a competition. Since these issues surfaced at a new feis, they tried their best to handle questions on issues not directly addressed in our feis handbook. They did their best to quell the anxiety of the parents, while also conveying a sense that they respected their concerns and took them seriously. One feis noted that their photo booth was not successful and it was snowy and slushy (February in Cleveland) so they received unexpected cleaning surcharges from the venue. The hotel shuttles were not prompt either. One report noted that they encountered problems with two dance teacher interfering with dancers on the stage (one dancer was actually told to get off the stage after she was afueady lined up to dance and her competitor number recorded) as well as the talking with adjudicators at the stages. The concerns were sent to both the IDTANA and the NAFC board. Suggestions: A suggestion to revisit the Grades exams format, to make the process better suited for the feis.
