Vancouver Talmud Torah Band 2012
READY FOR SOME RIGHT
BRAIN LEARNING?
It has been well documented that learning a musical instrument positively
impacts brain development (music makes you clever!), but what are the other
benefits?
By joining VTT’s band program, your child will have the opportunity to meet a
new group of friends, personally stretch him/herself, and become part of a
cultural moré that touches everyone in society.
Vancouver Talmud Torah is pleased to
offer intermediate students of Grades 4, 5,
6, & 7 the opportunity to join our superb
BAND program, directed by Mr. James
Hopson, graduate of UVIC, and an
accomplished local trombonist and
educator.
In past years, the bands have performed
at Granville Island, the Louis Brier Home,
at school assemblies, and have hosted a
Jazz Café night at the school. The bands
have also teamed up with other school
bands and even attended VSO concerts at
the Orpheum Theatre.
NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE IS
NECESSARY.
Thanks to a generous
donor, joining the
band is more
affordable than ever.
Fees are $400 for the
year or $40 monthly
(an amazing value for
professional
instruction). Subsidies
are available on a need
basis. Renting instruments costs between
$15 and $35 a month (through Prussin
Music).
Junior Band members (usually Grades 4
and 5) learn the basics of the instruments
(e.g., flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet,
trombone, baritone and electric bass).
This band develops the skills required to
play a variety of styles and gives a solid
base for reading music. The Senior Band
(Grades 6 and 7) is made up of students
who have completed the Junior Band
and are ready for more complex music and
performance skills.
The school will hold an “instrument
demo” at the beginning of the school
The bands meet before school at 7:30 year. Details on instrument rental will be
a.m. twice a week for 50 minutes. There forthcoming. If you have any questions
are no conflicts with lunchtime or after about the program or would like to enroll,
school activities.

Vancouver Talmud Torah Band 2012/2013 – Getting Started
Welcome back to another exciting year in the Talmud Torah Band Program!
This document contains a brief description of our program, as well as everything you’ll need to know for a
smooth beginning to your student’s Band experience.
Who can join?
Any VTT student in Grades 4-7 is eligible to join one of our Bands. The Junior Band is for students who are
just starting to learn their instrument (typically Gr. 4-5), and the Senior Band is for students who already
have 1 year or more of experience (typically Gr. 6-7).
Joining the band is easy – simply fill out the attached instrument selection form and return it to the
VTT front office. Please include your student’s full name, grade/class, instrument choices, and a parent’s
email address or phone number. Alternatively, you can email that information to Jim Hopson:
jthopson@gmail.com
When/where do the Bands meet?
The Junior Bands meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30am to 8:20am, and the Senior Band
meets on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 7:30am to 8:20am. In the event of a school holiday or
cancellation (no sessions), Band practice will also be canceled. All rehearsals will take place on the stage
of the new gym, where our Band facilities are located.
The dates of the first rehearsals will be Sept. 19th for the Senior Band, and Sept. 13th for the Junior Band.
How much does it cost?
Thanks to a generous donor, joining the Band is more affordable than ever! The annual fee for participation
in the Bands is $400 for 10 months. Checks can be made payable to Vancouver Talmud Torah, and
dropped off at the front office.
In addition to the program fee, parents/students are responsible for renting an instrument, as well as
purchasing any music books and supplies that are required for the upkeep of the instrument.
Required Materials
In addition to renting an instrument, all students are required to own a copy of our chosen Band method,
Essential Elements Book I. Make sure to purchase the edition that matches your student’s instrument (i.e.
Flute, Alto Sax, etc.). Owning a music stand for home practice is also recommended.
The following is a list of necessary supplies th at are spec ific to certain in stru ments:
Percussion
At least 3 pairs of drum sticks; 1 pair of mallets; 1 pair of brushes; stick bag; practice pad.
Flute
Maintenance kit (usually included with rental/purchase of flute).
Clarinet/Saxophone
Maintenance kit (usually included with rental/purchase of instrument); at least 1 box of reeds; neck straps
are required for saxophonists, optional for clarinetists.
Trumpet/Euphonium/Baritone
Maintenance kit (usually included with rental/purchase of instrument); Al Cass valve oil is highly
recommended over the oil that is usually included in kits.
Trombone
Maintenance kit (usually included with rental/purchase of instrument); slide creams made by Yamaha and
Superslick (with water spray bottles) are HIGHLY recommended over the ‘slide oil’ that is usually included in
kits.
Students are required to bring their instruments, music books, and basic cleaning supplies to every
rehearsal. Percussionists must bring drum sticks, mallets, brushes, and music books.
Where can I purchase/rent in stru ments and supplies?
Prussin Music (604-736-3036), located on Broadway Ave and Alma St, is an excellent store for music
supplies. On September 12th at 7pm, Prussin Music will be hosting a Rental Night at VTT in the library.
Parents/students will have the opportunity to purchase/rent instruments and supplies, and Band teacher
Jim Hopson will be there for consultation.
When will the Bands perform?
The fall semester of Band will concentrate on preparation for the Channukah Concert on December 12th at
7pm. The spring semester will feature a variety of performances, including our Spring Concert. The Bands
will also perform at school assemblies and other functions throughout the year. In past years, the Bands
have attended VSO concerts, Kiwanis Festival, performed at Granville Island and the Louis Brier Home, and
have even hosted a Jazz Café Night at VTT. We look forward to similar performance opportunities this year!
