PUMA SAILING WORKBOOK BASICS BASICS HISTORY Sailing is one of the oldest and most environmentally friendly modes of transport. Mankind has used the power of the wind from very early on to quench his thirst for knowledge. But long gone are the times when adventurers and explorers set sail to discover new worlds and become heroes. The maps of the world have lost their blank spots, and the fear of reaching the end of the world has disappeared. Many sailors have found rest in the deep waters of the ocean, many ships have sunk to the sea bed, but some of the captains and sailors have become heroes and are still remembered today. Who has not heard of Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Sir Francis Drake, James Cook, or Ferdinand Magellan? Joshua Slocum was the first to complete a single-handed circumnavigation in the time from 1895 to 1898. Robin Knox-Johnston first made the trip single-handedly and non-stop 1968–1969. I]ZÃghildbVcidhjXXZhh[jaanX^gXjbcVk^\ViZi]Z\adWZ was Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz from 1976 to 1978. Kay Cottee was the first women to achieve a non-stop circumnavigation in 1988. RACE AROUND THE GLOBE The journey around the globe still fascinates modern-day explorers who keep trying to create new challenges and more adventurous achievements. In 1973, the first successful ‘Race around the Globe’ took place, sponsored by the Whitbread Company. Since 2001, it is known as the ‘VOLVO Ocean Race’ and has established itself as the most challenging and adventurous sailing race in the world. OTHER SAILING EVENTS Apart from the VOLVO Ocean Race, there are other sailing regattas of great reputation in the sailing world, the oldest and most prestigious one being the America’s Cup. CIRCUMNAVIGATION In the case of Ferdinand Magellan, this fame is based on the fact claim that he was the first person to circumnavigate the globe. This is not entirely correct, as he died fighting natives in the Philippines one year before the end of the journey. His crew, however, completed the journey, circumnavigating the world between 1519-1522. The adventurers of today are the single-handed circumnavigators of the world. America’s Cup: The ‘America's Cup’ is a challenge-based competition where the previous winning yacht club sets the rules and hosts the event. The race is often compared to Formula 1 because of the many people involved, the huge budgets, and the technology developed for the boats. There are only two boats on the course at the same time, battling it out against each other. This format is called match racing. Transat: The ‘Transat’ is a race across the Atlantic Ocean for single-handed sailors. It takes place between Plymouth and Boston and is extremely challenging. Transpac Race: The ‘Transpac Race’ has taken place every two years since 1906 between the USA and Hawaii and is one of the easier races. Bermuda Race: The ‘Bermuda Race’, started in 1922, the 647nm lead from Newport (RI) to Hamilton (Bermudas). Sydney – Hobart: The ‘Sydney-Hobart’ race was established in 1945. Although it is held in the summer on the Southern hemisphere, participants can experience severe conditions, which make it a very challenging race. Fastnet Race: The ‘Fastnet Race’ starts in Cowes on the Isle of Wight and leads 608nm round the Fastnet rock on the south coast of Ireland. It takes place every two years and has a long standing tradition. Cowes Week: Every ambitious sailor has to be on the Isle of Wight (UK) in August each year to be part of ‘Cowes Week’. Cowes is the sailing Mecca of the world, and every true sailor has to take part at least once in a lifetime. It first took place as early as 1826 and remains hugely popular today. Kiel Week: The first ‘Kiel Week' was held in 1892 in Germany, and still takes place every year at the end of June. It is the largest sailing event in the world, with more than 5000 active sailors in different boat classes. ARC-Rally: ' ARC-Rally’ is a challenging amateur race across the Atlantic Ocean, starting at Gran Canaria and finishing in St Lucia. Copa del Rey: The ‘Copa del Rey’ takes place in Palma de Mallorca, this event attracts the European regatta elite. MODERN DAY SAILORS PUMA SAILING CATEGORIES The sailors of today have changed from being adventurers and explorers to athletes and leisure time yachtsmen. There are still sailors who make a living out of sailing in this day and age, mostly professional athletes who compete in races and regattas all over the world. However, the great majority of sailors are amateurs who sail in their leisure time and travel to regattas at the weekends. Some practice their sport very ambitiously and sail at Olympic level, others just enjoy the odd race once in a while. But racing is not everything to amateur skippers. A lot of them simply enjoy being on the water, free to sail wherever they wish to go, playing with the forces of nature and discovering beautiful spots and beaches on shore. This way, they can still feel like the adventurers and explorers of times long past, discovering the world at their ease. As there are different types of yachtsmen, different ambitions, different sailing areas, and different types of boats, there have to be different kinds of sailing gear. In order to make it easier to match the varying requirements, different types of sailing and the appropriate equipment are subdivided into different categories. These categories of PUMA Sailing performance are: Offshore, One Design and Match Race, and Inshore. One Design and Match Race is the mid-range category, offering clothing for competitive, athletic sailing in coastal areas. Starting in Spring / Summer 2009, the Offshore and Inshore categories will also offer technical clothing tailored specifically to women’s needs, whereas the One Design and Match Race category will remain unisex for the time being. The Inshore sailing collection takes its name from sailing in sheltered waters and there fore places the lowest protection requirements within the performance collection. WRAP-UP The world was discovered and put on the map by sailors Nowadays, sailing is mainly recognised as a sport or leisure time activity Many people have sailed around the globe since Magellan’s crew achieved this feat for the first time in 1519-1522 Some of these sailors have done so singlehandedly and non-stop The ‘VOLVO Ocean Race’ is the most famous around-the-world race There is, however, more to sailing than the ‘VOLVO Ocean Race’ America’s Cup is the oldest sailing race (started in 1851) The ‘America’s Cup’ is the oldest sailing race (started in 1851) The Offshore category is the top of the range category, with the most stringent requirements suitable for the roughest weather conditions. BASICS OFFSHORE ONE DESIGN AND MATCH RACE INSHORE Gender Men / Women Gender Men / Women Gender Men / Women Target group Ambitious sailor Target group Competitive sailors Target group Relaxed cruisers Level Racing and cruising crews Level Professional to amateur Level Leisure time sailors Sailing Area Open sea Sailing Area Sailing Area Sheltered areas Weather conditions Severe conditions, strong winds, cold water, rough sea Coastal regions, close to land, inshore Weather conditions Protection against water, wind and cold temperatures, loose fit Winds can be strong, the weather is fair most of the time Requirements Protection against wind and water, freedom of movement for sportive sailing Sailing boats Identical raceboats; 25ft to 'Amercia’s Cup' fleet Requirements Sailing boats 30ft (9m) or more The Offshore category is the top of the PUMA Sailing categories. It is designed for ambitious sailors who take part in offshore races throughout the year. Many of the crews are families and friends who race and train together on a regular basis. Offshore sailing takes place on the open sea far from sheltered areas over a period of several days. This means the crews are completely exposed to the forces of nature. The conditions are often very cold, windy and wet. On some days, the sea is throwing everything it has got at the sailors. Therefore, they need maximum protection and comfort to perform at their top level. Performing at a high level also means strenuous work on deck, and the clothes’ moisture management has to work underneath the wind and water protection. When sailing in offshore races, the competitors generally are not active all the time. There are long breaks between manoeuvres in which they need to stay warm, comfortable and focused. As motivation levels play a huge part in the success of a team, staying comfortable and feeling good is essential for performance. The One Design category is designed for races taking place closer to land, with less severe conditions encountered in offshore racing. Therefore, the protective requirements for this category are slightly less demanding. The One Design category is especially designed for competitive sailors who regularly take part in races. Their boats are built according to certain regulations, so that fair competition with other boats is possible. The performance level within this category is extremely varied. At the top end is the ‘America’s Cup’, which is highly professional. Then, there are semi-professionals who race regularly and have sponsorship. At the lower end of the spectrum, there are amateurs who just take part in races from time to time and enjoy the fun of sailing, competing, and potentially winning. The conditions can be cold, wet and windy, but most of the competitions take place during warm times of the year. As this kind of sailing is very competitive, the equipment has to live up to functional standards. The sailors have to be able to perform their tasks on board and stay warm and dry at the same time. Moisture has to be transported away from the skin as quickly as possible, but at the same time the garment has to protect against the wind which is ever present when sailing. Weather conditions Light winds and fair weather Requirements Protection from rain and spray, comfortable fit Sailing boats Charter boats The Inshore category is designed for yachtsmen staying in sheltered areas like bays, lakes or estuaries, and thus meets slightly less exacting protection standards than the other two categories. Most of these yachtsmen do not own their own boats and charter them for a day or the holiday. They only sail now and again because they enjoy being on the water, relaxing or cruising. They mostly sail in fair and sunny weather conditions. The toughest weather in which they may decide to go out are medium winds, strong rain and small waves. Sailing is a leisure time activity for them, and they are not interested in competing against other boats and yachtsmen. Such sailors do not need maximum protection against the elements, a light rain jacket is sufficient most of the time. The amount of hard work on deck is also limited, and the functionality of the clothes becomes less important. These kinds of garments are lightweight and very popular for a broad maritime audience, even for wearing onshore. BASICS SAILING GEAR Today we have the materials and technical fabrics to produce sailing gear that fulfils the needs and requirements of every sailor, from the high performance athlete to the occasional yachtsman. Modern functional sailing equipment guarantees full protection against water, maximum comfort for maximum performance. This has not always been the case. HISTORY The conditions at sea are often rough, and the salt water is very damaging to the skin. In the times of the great adventurers and explorers, this posed immense difficulties, as they did not have the right clothing to protect against the elements. The best they had in these days was a type of fabric or canvas that was impregnated with oil (often linseed oil) to make it waterproof. Others used sailcloth with a thin layer of tar to stay dry, or soaked the fabric in wax. The first protective sailing gear was called oilskin, a term that is sometimes still used for today’s modern sailing gear. Oilskins are the yellow PVCcoated rain jackets developed in 1965 by Ansteen Nielsson the founder of Jeantex. The water-proof jacket was designed for fishermen and sailors and could also be worn inside out if required. In the 1970s and 80s almost everyone owned a yellow oilskin, and today it has become legendary. Staying dry was the highest comfort sailors could get in times past. BODY PHYSIOLOGY Today no sailor would swap their high-tech sailing gear for the old oilskin. Staying dry is still a problem today, but if you are sweating or freezing underneath your protective outerwear, it comes at a cost. The old oilskin was not breathable at all, so the sailors did sweat a lot while working on deck. Breathability of the garment is essential to guarantee maximum level performance, which is important when competing at the highest level. Strangers to the sport often think that sailing is not hard work, but ‘VOLVO Ocean Race’ athletes burn as many calories a day as ‘Tour de France’ cyclists. The heart rate of a grinder can rise up to 200 bpm, and they need the physical characteristics of a boxer: strong legs and fast arms. So, sailing is hard work indeed, and the weight bearing varies from slow endurance strains to very short strains and fast movements. It is impossible to perform well at this level when hyper- or hypothermic. There are long low intensity intervals on deck, but these are punctuated by bursts of intense activity: when there is a manoeuvre in the offing, everything has to happen very quickly and accurately. The strain is very high for a short time, and the body temperature rises and remains high for quite some time afterwards. When the body temperature rises, the body compensates by producing sweat. Vaporising the water on the skin uses a lot of heat from the skin and body. Wind increases the speed of vaporisation and there is a danger of cooling the body temperature down too much. Therefore it is essential to transport the sweat away from the body and to stop the wind from getting anywhere near it. In cold temperatures the body tries to preserve the existing energy by constricting the veins or to gain some heat by muscle activity. That is when we shiver or get goose bumps. Hypothermia limits our thinking and decision making, and it also increases the risk of seasickness. This is why sailors need total weather protection delivered by their garments when sailing. GARMENT PHYSIOLOGY There is no escaping from the elements or something like a warm shower at the end of a day on the open sea. You hardly get out of your sailing gear on board an offshore yacht. Therefore, the fabric of technical sailing garments has to be functio- nal at the highest level. Due to the physical strains on the body, sailing garments do not only need to be waterproof, they also have to guarantee moisture management, breathability and thermal insulation to regulate the body’s temperature, and they have to be lightweight and loosely fitted. To be able to adjust your gear to the ever-changing weather conditions on board and to keep a stable body temperature, the layering principle is essential. When wearing different functional garments in different layers, you can stay dry, warm, and comfortable in any climatic conditions. Base layer Mid layer Outer shell WATERPROOF THERMAL INSULATION Helps the sailor to stay comfortable during manoeuvres and on fair days on deck. Transports the sweat away from the body and keeps the skin dry. Helps the body to keep warm when the temperature is low and the wind is strong. It has to stay dry at any time. Spray proof fabric. Moisture management Breathability Highly functional fabrics, perfect moisture wicking properties Thermal insulation Breathability Warm synthetic fibres that trap a lot of air between them Wind- and waterproof materials protect the sailor from strong winds, heavy rain and spray. Weather protection Breathability GORE-TEX®, WINDSTOPPER® or other waterproof and breathable fabric BASICS REQUIREMENTS FOR SAILING APPAREL LAYERING PRINCIPLE MOISTURE MANAGEMENT Moisture management describes the ability of a textile surface to absorb moisture (sweat) and to transfer it away from the skin to the outer surface of the textile. There, the moisture is distributed over a large surface area where it evaporates quickly. The layering principle (known as the ‘onionprinciple’) guarantees the functionality of the garments (protection, breathability, moisture transfer and insulation). According to the layering principle, when combined, the various functional garments guarantee a comfortable fit regardless of any weather condition. Since, they provide the optimum base for high-level sports performance. An interruption of the layering system caused BREATHABILITY Breathability describes the amount of moisture (means sweat in form of vapour) that textiles allow to escape through their outer surface. THERMAL INSULATION When it is cold at sea or in specific maritime climate regions, the retention of body heat becomes essential to prevent a severe drop of core body temperature. In order to achieve this objective, insulating materials (i.e. fleece) are used. PROTECTION Protection is important to maintain the overall comfort level. Weather protection to avoid water from entering through Outer shell Wind protection to reduce wind chill UV protection to block UV rays Reinforced materials to avoid abrasion on garments Sailing apparel needs to be highly durable due to the rough elements, the salty air and water, the exertion for hours, days up to weeks and the rough superstructure on deck. Dense woven fabrics, reinforcements at high stressed areas as well as high quality materials (e.g. high performance membranes from GORE-TEX®) VISIBILITY For safety reasons the Outer shell features reflective patches or prints to enhance your visibility during low light conditions or during night trips at sea. by the insertion of a non-functional textile (e.g. cotton textiles) results in the failure of the entire system. This also includes situations in which the protective layer is no longer water resistant in the rain (despite its functional fibres) and where the surface becomes coated with a film of water as a result. Because the breathability is compromised, moisture is trapped into the inner layers of the textiles. U.S.P. CONCEPT U.S.P. THERMAL INSULATION WRAP-UP The U.S.P. concept (Ultimate Sports Performance) addresses the body temperature regulation, protection and comfort based on a fabric concept. When it comes to special membranes for severe weather conditions - something you will undoubtedly have to face on a sailing boat - GORE-TEX® is unsurpassed. The pores of the membrane are 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, yet a water vapour molecule is 700 times smaller than the pores. This is how the GORE-TEX® membrane achieves breathability and protection against water at the same time. Saltwater has no effect what so ever on the membrane, it does not contaminate, alter or harm it, clog the pores, or decrease breathability. GORE-TEX® materials are extremely durable. Protection against water lasts more than 500 hours, if care instructions are met. An oleophobic (‘oil hating’) substance allowing moisture vapours to pass through it is integrated into the design, which creates a physical barrier to contaminating substances such as oils, insect repellents and food substances. GORE-TEX® garments are very lightweight and resistant to flexing. Special GORE-SEAM® tape technology ensures all seams are 100% waterproof. When the wind blows through a garment, the microclimate is destroyed, the body suffers from heat and energy loss, and the temperature is perceived as colder than it actually is. At a temperature of +10°C (50°F) and a wind speed of 40 km / h (25mph), the perceived wind chill temperature is -1°C (30°F). The WINDSTOPPER® Softshell delivers comfort as a mid or outer layer, is rain and snow resistant and dries quickly. It provides soft comfort and freedom of movement. However, PUMA is about to take the sailing market by storm, first and foremost through high exposure during the ‘VOLVO Ocean Race’. PUMA Sailing can brave the toughest conditions, not only at sea, but also on the market. PUMA is all about performance and functional clothing on the one hand and about lifestyle and design on the other. Therefore, we are adding non branded membranes to the range in 2009, which will make our apparel more interesting to a broader market. The new range has an extended spectrum of clothing for different occasions and categories. FOOTWEAR Most of the range is carried over from Spring /Summer 2008, with constant improvement of functionality. The new Aqua Mostro shoe sets new standards in design and uses brand-new fabrics. ACCESSORIES PUMA Sailing accessories have been designed to perform, inspire and excite. Most of the products are carry-overs from Spring /Summer ’08, with the introduction of a black colour version. The new Performance Wheel Bag adds more flexibility and convenience to the range. PUMA is a PVC free company that cares about the environment and its ecological footprint.
