WINTER DRIVING PRECAUTIONS
Be Able to See and Be Seen
Clean frost and snow off all windows, mirrors, lights and reflectors. Equip your car with good wiper blades and
keep an ample supply of windshield washer fluid. If visibility is poor, use headlamps.
Get a Feel for the Road
When you first start out, accelerate carefully to test wheel-spin and brake gently to test skidding.
Be Gentle
Use the accelerator and brakes slowly to maintain control of your vehicle. Fast acceleration can make wheels
spin on ice and snow. Brake with a gentle pumping action. Stepping too hard on the pedal will lock the brakes
and cause loss of steering control.
Increase Your Following Distance
Ice or snow can multiply your stopping distance up to ten times.
Make Turns Slowly and Gradually
Heavily traveled intersections can become “polished” and slick. Brake before you come to a curve, not while
you are in it.
Turn in the Direction of the Skid
If the rear of your car begins to slide, turn into the direction of the skid. Expect a second skid as the car
straightens out, and be prepared to counter this sliding action.
Scattered Slippery Spots
Icy spots on the road surface can cause loss of steering control. Do not use your brake. Take your foot off the
gas and steer as straight as possible until your car slows to a safe speed.
Avoiding a Collision
In an emergency situation, you can intentionally steer your car off the road and into a snow bank. You may
get stuck, but you’ll avoid a crash.
Snowplow Safety Tips:
 Yield to snowplows. They travel slower than posted speeds.
 Give snowplow drivers plenty of room to do their jobs.
 Never drive into a snow cloud.
 Slow down! Never use cruise control on wet or icy roads.
 Stay alert. A snowplow weighs 17 times more than a car. In a crash, occupants of a car are much more likely to be seriously injured.
 Be patient. Follow at a safe distance. Allow at least five car lengths between your vehicle and a snowplow.

Close Up
Waubun High School officially began participating in the Close-Up Washington, DC, Program in
the 1991-1992 school year, and we have taken students almost every year since then.
Close-Up is much more than a field trip – it’s a weeklong adrenaline rush through one of the coolest cities in the world! And it’s designed for high school students, grades 9-12. Students have fun
meeting other students from around the country as they visit Washington’s famous monuments, museums and attend a theater production in one of the historical theaters in Washington. They are also
able to speak their minds, meet members of Congress, debate with policy experts and learn how to
influence political decisions as the get an inside look at how our Nation’s government really works.
From morning until night, their trip is filled with the sights and sounds of DC!
Over the years, WHS has averaged about 10-20 students per trip to Washington, DC. We couldn’t
possibly do this this without the contributions from our local businesses, families and friends. We
want to take this opportunity to extend a big thank-you to some of the businesses that have contributed. These include ACS, Reservation Tribal Council, Midwest Bank, Wild Rice Electric, Prairie
Dental Centers, Community Development Bank of Ogema, Gjerde Auto Sales of Detroit Lakes, Wambach & Hanson Law Office of Mahnomen, Anderson-Mattson Funeral Home of Mahnomen and the
most recent from Mahnomen Parts, Inc. We want to thank the American Legion for having our students help with bingo in the month of October. Thank-you to the community members for supporting
Split the Pot, baked good sales and other food sales. A big thank-you to our school for the use of concessions and the school store! This is really a community effort and we appreciate all your support!
Mark your calendars for our up-coming Indian Taco fundraiser in White Earth on February 18,
March 4, March 18, April 1, April 15 and April 29. We will be sending out mass e-mailing for contact information as the date approaches. If you have not been included on the previous e-mailing,
please send your information to Nadinew@waubun.k12.mn.us.

INTERESTED IN BEING A HOST FAMILY FOR A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT!
ASSE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
ASSE is an Exchange Program that was originally established as American Scandinavian Student Exchange
to provide opportunities for student exchange between Sweden and the USA. It cooperates closely with the
provincial Ministries of Education in Canada and is approved by the New Zealand Ministry of Education. In
the USA, ASSE has been designated by the United States Department of State as an “exchange visitor
program” and adheres strictly to its regulations.
Since its inception, ASSE has expanded to include exchanges between:
Incoming ASSE exchange students are girls and boys, 15, 16, 17 or 18 years of age who are carefully
screened and selected by the ASSE Representatives abroad. School administrators, teachers, and ASSE
Representatives evaluate the students. Only those who can demonstrate excellent character, deportment,
and proficiency in the English language are chosen. All ASSE exchange students have at least three or more
years of English study (or the equivalent) in their home countries.
The students have excellent medical and liability insurance. They receive pocket money from their natural
parents, and the host family is expected to provide room and board only.
Beginning in the Autumn, the official student application packets for each exchange student who is accepted
into the program are sent to the appropriate ASSE office. These application packages include a two-page
typewritten autobiographical essay prepared by the student, the official application form, academic records,
a collage of photographs of the student, and a Health Certificate. Electronic and paper copies of the student
applications are available to ASSE Area Representatives and potential host families.
ASSE believes it is important that the host families be qualified as soon as possible during the year so that
correspondence between the host family and student can begin early and continue until the student’s arrival.
Each host family applicant is personally interviewed by the ASSE Area Representative.Potential host families
are required to complete a detailed application, covering many facets of their background and lifestyle. The
application includes an official agreement form confirming that they have read and agree to support the
ASSE Student Rules. ASSE and the United States Department of State also require that the host family
applicant undergoes a criminal background check in addition to furnishing three letters of reference,
preferably one from an employer, one from a community organization (church, temple, service club or other
such organization) and the third from a friend who knows the family - attesting to the stability
and good
repuily.

A WORLD OF UNDERSTANDING THROUGH CROSS-CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
INT'L
The ASSE Area Representative must complete the ASSE Home Visit Screening Form with an indication of
his/her impressions of the household and the neighbourhood.
Host families are required by the ASSE program to participate in the selection of the student who will be with
them for the academic year or semester. Once the family has qualified and made the important student
selection, and the school has granted written approval, records of this placement are filed in the appropriate
ASSE office.
The host family is expected to contact the local high school, and the ASSE Area Representative will contact
the School Administrator or School Board to ensure acceptance of the student at the high school. The
placement is not confirmed until the school has approved the student and signed the school acceptance
letter. Then the procedure is set in motion to obtain the student’s visa.
ASSE Area Representatives hold a mandatory Host Family Orientation Meeting prior to the students’ arrival.
Host families meet the students at the nearest major airport on arrival.
Within 2 weeks after the student’s arrival, the ASSE Area Representative will conduct a comprehensive
Student Orientation Meeting using as a guide our 23-point Agenda and other orientation material. At this
critical meeting, students and families are prepared for the rules of behavior and official guidelines within
which the program functions. Each student speaks privately to the ASSE Area Representative in order to
establish a close relationship so important to the success of the placement.
Every student and host family is furnished with the name, address and telephone number of the ASSE Area
Representative, as well as the information about their appropriate ASSE Coordinating Office and Regional
and/or National Office, and in the USA with the United States Department of State “Regulations Governing
Exchange Visitor Programs.” All ASSE offices have a 24-hour answering service in case an emergency
arises outside normal business hours.
Each month, the ASSE Area Representative contacts each student and host family to establish that
everything is satisfactory. Communication is maintained throughout the year. Three times during the school
year students and families get together with the ASSE Area Representative for social or recreational activities
and/or holiday gatherings.
In addition to the incoming academic year and semester programs described above, ASSE also sponsors
an outbound year, semester and three month program. ASSE’s Teen Twin program is a reciprocal exchange
which offers students and their families the unique opportunity to host a student from abroad during the Fall.
From January to March, the student then spends three months with his/her “twin’s” family overseas. ASSE
summer programs are designed for high school age students who may wish to spend four or six weeks
abroad during the months of July and August, either living with a host family in a Language and Cultural
Immersion Program or participating in a Summer Homestay Language Program. All students who apply for
participation as an ASSE Exchange Student abroad for any of these programs are interviewed individually
and with their parents by the ASSE Area Representative. ASSE requires four letters of reference, two from
teachers, one from a member of the school’s administrative staff and one from a church or civic
organization, supporting the student’s qualifications to participate in the program.
The ASSE Exchange Student Applicant must also furnish a two-page, typewritten, autobiographical essay, signed transcripts of the last two years in school, a certificate of health, six passport-sized photographs, and a photo collage.
ASSE believes that through cultural exchange programs and homestay programs, a greater international
understanding is achieved among people and countries.
