Please update all emergency information immediately by coming to the office in person. Thank you! Attendance Our vision at Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center is to have every student at school, everyday, on time and ready to learn. If your child will not be at school or will be late to school, please call the school and let us know at 309-672-6810. Tardy Policy A child is tardy if he/she arrives AFTER 8:45a.m. The parent/guardian is expected to sign the child in at the office or the welcome center. Bringing your child to school Students are to be welcomed to the classroom no earlier that 8:30 a.m. unless a plan is in place between the teacher and family. Any students who arrive at school before 8:30 a.m. will be asked to wait with their family in the parent lounge. Buses will arrive and unload at 8:30 a.m. The driveway in front of the school is a NO PARKING area. It is reserved for our school buses. The doors on the driveway side of the building remain locked for safety purposes. Parents who are bringing children to school should park in a parking spot in the large parking lot on the south side of school and use the entrance facing John Gwynn Park. Certified adults will be throughout the building to insure all children are monitored and arrive safely to their classrooms. Due to safety, if you wish to go to the classroom with your child you must sign in at the office. Picking up your child from school Only the person designated by the parent on the emergency card pick-up list will be allowed to pick up a child. o The person picking the child up must be 18 years of age or older. o Valeska Hinton ECEC reserves the right to request identification from anyone picking up a child. Please note that we are teaching up until the very last minute of school (11:15AM for AM sessions of half day programs and 3:30PM for PM and full day programs) If you have not picked up your child by 3:30 p.m., your child will be taken to the activity room. Parking Lot Safety Procedures At Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center we are proud of our culture of respect, safety, responsibility and team playing for children and adults. In the parking lot, please: Park in a designated parking spot. Hold your child’s hand while walking in and around the parking lot. Note that our parking lot is a NO CELL PHONE ZONE. Drop-off/Pick-up: There are reserved spots for 10 minutes parking as you bring and pick up your child. These spots are located south of the grassy median, in the center of the parking lot, near the cross walk. Please use these spots to park while entering and leaving the building. Please respect the need to have these spots open for all parents and plan to move your car within 10 minutes. Fire Lanes: Fire lanes are clearly marked with signs, cones and striping. Please do not park in these spots for any reason. It is important to keep these lanes open for emergencies. Please use the reserved parent parking spots. Bus Lanes: The lanes nearest the curb, near the school, on both the south and north sides of the building are designated as bus lanes. There is no parking in these lanes even for a short period. Please use “reserved” parent parking spots. Speed and Cell Phone Use: With over 400 students and adults entering and exiting the building it is important to keep speeds under 15 mph so there are no accidents. Please be attentive at cross walks on both sides of the grassy median and use these crosswalks to get to your parking spot. Crossing at other locations puts you at risk for an accident. To be attentive, please postpone or end your cell phone conversations until you are back on the city streets. Transportation Families will be asked at the beginning of the school year if their child(ren) will be riding the school bus or be picked up by an individual. School Bus: If a child rides the school bus, and his/her pickup or drop off address changes, please contact the secretary in person at Valeska Hinton to make the changes. Changes take effect on the following Monday. If there are any questions or concerns regarding the bus transportation system, the bus barn can be contacted at 309-693-4418. We have the Bus Bulletin available for all families with a student riding the bus. This gives your family the capabilities to have updates on late, substitute drivers, etc. via email and text message. Please take to opportunity to sign up for our Bus Bulletin! ALL visitors must check-in at the main office before visiting. ALL visitors must were a visible nametag. Individuals may also be asked to sign-in when they arrive at classrooms. The school reserves the right to check for identification when individuals are signing-in at the office. Family Handbook copied utilizing Title I and Early Childhood PFA Grant Funds 7 Peanut Free School Valeska Hinton ECEC is a Peanut Free School. Therefore, we may not bring into the school any food containing Peanuts! Meal Time All meals are severed in the classroom. Warm/hot food is kept warm/hot in a warmer located in each village kitchen. Each classroom’s teacher is denoted within the warmer. Adults should sit and eat with the children and engage them in conversation. Teaching staff provide the opportunity for children to be independent by serving themselves at mealtime, setting up the place settings, cleaning off their plates and the area around them, etc. All children have the option of eating breakfast and lunch at no charge at our school. Snacks Snacks should be served at regularly scheduled times. Some classrooms have a snack center in their classrooms. This is an option for teaching teams to implement. Snacks should be serves at least two hours apart but not more than three hours apart. Teaching teams make sure that food that requires refrigeration stays cold until served. Snacks brought from home: All food and beverages brought from a child’s home should be labeled with the child’s, name and date. Food that comes from home for sharing among the children must be commercially prepared packaged foods in factory-sealed containers. Rest Time Any scheduled rest time at any primary grade level, regular division or special education, will not exceed 30 minutes or 13% of the instructional time in the school day. Any scheduled rest time at any preprimary grade level will not exceed 1 hour 15 minutes or 18% of the in instructional time in the school day. Learning opportunities will be provided for any and all children who are non-resters. Medication If a child should require medication during school hours, parents MUST complete a medication release for the school. No medications of any kind can be administered without the parent previously completing this form. Teachers look forward to these dates as an opportunity to show off how much growth your child has made and want to tell you all the spectacular projects they have created and what they will be continuing to work on in the upcoming weeks and months. Formal family/teacher conferences are held two times a year: Fall and Spring; however, we encourage more regular conference as you and your teacher see fit for needed communication. Family Access Family Access provides parents access to students’ school information through the Internet. Why should I enroll in Family Access? Family Access will allow you instant access to your student’s information including attendance, grades, etc. Creating an account will provide another opportunity for you to participate in your child’s education. How will I enroll in Family Access? Complete the enrollment application and return it to the address listed at the bottom of the application. One application will provide access to information for all your children enrolled in Peoria Public Schools. Within two weeks of receipt of your application, you will receive your username and password along with a set of directions on how to use Family Access in the mail. We will also talk about the requirements and rights of parents to be involved in a program funded through the Early Childhood Block Grant. IMPLEMENTATION OF PARENTAL POLICY The Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center will provide parents of participating children information in a timely manner about Title I, Part A programs that includes a description and explanation of the school’s curriculum, the forms of academic assessment used to measure children’s progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet by: Parent workshops on topics such as: o Curriculum Language for Learning Math Creative Curriculum Second Step/Social & Emotional Pacing Guide/PBIS o Assessment in Pre-K Universal screeners: Math Screeners Authentic Assessment Work Sampling Systems Illinois (checklist) Brigance PreK Summary Reports Parent/Teacher conferences Personal one-on-one conversations District Wide: Parent University The Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center will at the request of parents, provide opportunities for regular meetings for parents to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions about the education of their children. The school will respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible by: Reviewing the suggestions and decisions as a leadership team and in grade level team meetings. A timeline for implementation, which includes who will be responsible for what task and how the information will be communicated back to our parents will be developed ensuring follow through of the suggestion. DISTRICT-WIDE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT POLICY COMPONENTS The Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center will take the following actions to provide each parent timely notice when their child has been assigned or has been taught for four (4) or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified within the meaning of the term in section 200.56 of the Title I Final Regulations (67 Fed. Reg. 71710, December 2, 2002) by: A formal letter will be sent to families sharing this information. Any families who cannot be reached via a letter, will be called. The Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center will provide assistance to parents of children served by the school, as appropriate, in understanding topics listed below by undertaking the actions described in this paragraph -• • • • • • the state’s academic content standards the state’s student academic achievement standards the state and local academic assessments including alternate assessments the requirements of Part A how to monitor their child’s progress how to work with educators We will address the topics above in the following ways: Parent workshops on topics such as: o Curriculum Language for Learning Math Creative Curriculum Second Step/Social & Emotional Pacing Guide/PBIS o Assessment in Pre-K Universal screeners: Math Screeners Authentic Assessment Work Sampling Systems Illinois (checklist) Brigance PreK Summary Reports Informal communication between staff and parents Parent/Teacher conferences Involvement in the school’s Universal Leadership Team Family Advisory Board/Parent Teacher Organization Family Handbook copied utilizing Title I and Early Childhood PFA Grant Funds 13 The Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center will provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their children’s academic achievement, such as literacy training and using technology, as appropriate, to foster parental involvement, by: Parent workshops on topics such as: o Curriculum SRA Language for Learning Math, Creative Curriculum, Second Step, PBIS Technology (i.e. Smartboard, digital cameras, iPads) The Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center will, with the assistance of its parents, educate its teachers, pupil services personnel, principals and other staff in how to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners in the value and utility of contributions of parents, and in how to implement and coordinate parent programs and build ties between parents and schools, by: On-going Cultural Proficiency Training for staff Parents’ facilitation of a portion of a staff meeting, SIP day, or Professional Learning Community Monthly Family Advisory Board/PTO Meetings Informal conversations between staff and families The Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center will, to the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinate and integrate parental involvement programs and activities with Head Start, Early Head Start, Reading First, Early Reading First, Even Start, Home Instruction Programs for Preschool Youngsters, the Parents as Teachers Program, public preschool, and other programs. The school will also conduct other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children, by: There is funding for programs at Valeska Hinton, which includes Title I and the Early Childhood Block Grant. All families, regardless of how the education of their child is funded, are invited to participate in their child’s education including volunteering, attending workshops, utilizing the parent lending library, etc. The Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center will take the following actions to ensure that information related to the school and parent-programs, meetings, and other activities is sent to parents of participating children in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon request, and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand: Monthly school newsletter: Valeska Villiager in English and Spanish School Webpage @ www.psd150.org/valeskahinton Classroom newsletters Blackboard app announcements, phone calls, text messages, and e-mails Family Handbook copied utilizing Title I and Early Childhood PFA Grant Funds 14 Fliers and signs about upcoming events PART IV. ADOPTION This District-wide Parental Involvement Policy has been developed jointly with, and agreed on with, parents of children participating in Title I, Part A programs, as evidenced by ULT Participation, Title 1 Meeting during Open House, and the Parent Meeting on August 29, 2014. This policy was adopted by the Peoria Public Schools District 150 on December 1, 2014 and will be in effect for the period of 2014-2015. The school district will distribute this policy to all parents of participating Title I, Part A children on or before December 1, 2014. The Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center staff believes that schools can only be successful when they help children grow academically, socially, and emotionally. We are using the District’s Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports plan to help create a safe and positive environment for all children, to help stimulate their love of learning, and to inspire them to reach their full potential. Our plan is based on positive behavioral supports and interventions is created by our PBIS committee and guided by the district. The PBIS Tier 1 and Tier 2 Team each meet monthly to look at our behavior data. The system progresses and continues to be altered as needs arise based on data. Our plan has the following components: • Parent Handbook – a booklet which describes the PBIS system • Rainbow Rules: Our School’s Behavior Matrix – chart that indicates expected behavior in designated areas • Classroom Rainbow Chart – a individualized student and classroom data chart that progresses throughout the day • “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?”- a children’s book, every classroom has and refers to for behavior checks and references • Blue Tickets: A reward system to help reinforce positive behavior. • Office Discipline Referrals (ODR’s: Major and Minor infractions) in Skyward – used to communicate student infractions and provide data to in order to create appropriate interventions. • Cool Tools – lesson plans used to teach students the behavioral expectations. • School-Wide Celebrations – an activity that occurs when students reach the Valeska Hinton behavioral goal PBIS Purpose Create a more positive school environment in the entire learning community: school buildings, buses, extra-curricular activities, and district households. Inspire positive behaviors within the learning environment. Empower the decision-making process by utilizing behavioral data. “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” This is a children’s book that every classroom has in their room and teacher reads as a resource to the whole class. This book will be read numerous times throughout the school year and become our central theme at Valeska. The book will be used as a tool to help teach and encourage positive behavior. Our goal is that every child will learn how to become bucket fillers. Buckets - “Reward system” Each classroom will receive a bucket. The goal is for every classroom to fill the buckets. Children are encouraged to help fill the bucket by using the skills taught from the bucket book and the cool tools. Every time the teacher notices a child filling a bucket the child will get to place a “blue PBIS ticket” in their classrooms bucket. Office Discipline Referral *Our school's discipline policies are now outlined in a district discipline handbook which can be downloaded by visiting www.peoriapublicschools.org/ discipline. Office Discipline Referrals are utilized for staff to communicate student infractions with Administration. The data we receive from these help us with our teaching and interventions. There are Major and Minor infractions that may be reported to the office. Minor infractions are handled by a teacher or teaching assistant. However, a major infraction is then referred to the Principal. Rainbow Rules: Valeska’s School-Wide Behavior Expectations Matrix Valeska Hinton has created a Behavior Expectations Matrix that meets the guidelines of the district-wide program entitled PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports). Here are the three clearly defined expectations of Valeska’s Behavior Matrix: Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe The Rainbow Rules: the matrix is posted in every classroom and around the school to remind students and adults what to do and how to behave in order to abide by these three rules in the various areas of our school. Every student will be taught our Rainbow Rules in multiple settings throughout our school. They will be instructed as to what the expectations look and sound like, and will practice and revisit them all year. Family Handbook copied utilizing Title I and Early Childhood PFA Grant Funds 17 Cool Tools Cool tools are lesson plans used to teach students the behavioral expectations. One of the most important parts of PBIS is that behavioral skills and expectations are taught directly to the students. The lessons will teach all the students what is expected of them and how they are to behave. All students will be taught Cool Tools that aligns with our Rainbow Rules and are based upon the needs of our students. School-Wide Celebration This is an acknowledgement activity that occurs when students reach the Valeska Hinton behavioral “Bucket Filling” goal. These typically take place once a quarter. Parent Roles and Responsibilities You are the first teacher in your child’s life, which makes your help with PBIS extremely important. We understand that your home environment may have different expectations, but in order to assist us we ask that you support our staff in these following ways: 1. Please remind your child of the Rainbow Rules, school wide PBIS beliefs, each day before he/she leaves for school: Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe 2. If your child has had some difficulty behaving, use the Rainbow Rules as a tool to go over and reinforce specific expected behaviors. If you do this before school each day, you will be helping remind your child what is expected of him/her during the school day. 3. Help your child by helping him/her wake up for school and arrive on time. Students should arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. 4. After school, ask your child if they “filled anyone’s bucket” or helped to fill their classroom’s bucket. Find out what behaviors were exhibited in order to fill the bucket. Please offer your child extra praise and reinforcement for these behaviors! 5. Your support sends an important message to your child that we are working TOGETHER as a team to help him/her be successful in all parts of his/her life. We greatly appreciate your daily support!
