ION staff were on-site to answer questions, hand out light rail transit (LRT) route maps and provide rapid transit information during the annual jazz celebration. This was the second successful community event for ION in July as the 60-foot mock-up of the LRT vehicle visited Downtown Kitchener as part of the Days of #KWAwesome. An amazing 4,279 people took a tour of the vehicle during the four-day visit. They also had an opportunity to chat with staff about the Region’s other Transportation services, including Grand River Transit, and on-going projects such as the King/Victoria Transit Hub, the Community Building Strategy and the Regional Transportation Master Plan. During two similar events in 2013, including one in UpTown Waterloo, more than 3,000 residents toured the LRT vehicle. Watch for another visit from the ION LRT mock-up next summer. It appears that some businesses could have to pay an annual business licensing fee. Please see the following message from the City of Waterloo. The Proposed Business Licensing By-Law can be viewed at this link: http://goo.gl/MZ3RBd The proposed by-law (accessed via the link above) is intended to continue to regulate various business activities throughout the City. It is a comprehensive by-law which lays out specific regulations/requirements depending on business type. Generally speaking, licenses expire on a yearly basis as outlined in schedule 4 of the above by-law and yearly renewal fees apply. If you have other questions, please send an email to businesslicenses@waterloo.ca. The staff report can be found here: http://www.waterloo.ca/businesslicenses/ Delegations If you would like to register as a delegation to speak on the matter, please send an email to clerkinfo@waterloo.ca or call 519-747-8549. More information about registering as a delegation can be found on the City of Waterloo's website at http://www.waterloo.ca/en/government/delegationregistration.asp. The deadline to register and receive a full 10 minutes would be 10:00 am, Monday, August 11th. If you register after that time, you will have only 5 minutes. Questions? If you have further questions about any of the above, please contact the City of Waterloo’s By-Law Office (519-747-8785) or email businesslicenses@waterloo.ca. As you may be already aware, last week there were several small fires in the UpTown area, and they appear to have been intentionally set. In light of these events, the City of Waterloo’s Fire Rescue Services would like all UpTown businesses to adhere to the following guidelines and pass them along to staff: 1. Please refrain from keeping combustible waste and recycling items such as cardboard boxes outside until it needs to be picked up. If you need to place items outside, store them in a secure location or containers. If your business uses large industrial garbage/recycling bins, lock them with a chain and lock. This will help to reduce any potential fire hazards on the outside of the buildings. 2. Owners and staff should review their Fire Emergency Procedures for their businesses, so they know what actions to take if they discover a fire. Always make sure that everyone gets out, activate the fire alarm system if one is installed and call Waterloo Fire Rescue at 9-1-1. 3. If business owners/staff see anyone suspicious around their properties, please call Waterloo Regional Police Service: 519-653-7700. If you have further questions or concerns, please contact John Percy, Public Education Officer, Fire Rescue Services: 519-884-6030 ext. 3009 or john.percy@waterloo.ca. Thank you for your cooperation.
