is a permit to use not
abuse, to enjoy not
destroy our cold water
fishery. It's
subscribing to the
proposition that what's
good for trout and
salmon is good for the
fisherman and that
managing trout and
salmon for themselves
rather than the
fisherman is
fundamental to the
solution of our trout
and salmon problems.
It's appreciating our
fishery resource,
respecting fellow
anglers and giving
serious thought to
tomorrow.
Hello everyone, welcome back from our July and
August reprieve. I hope all of you had an enjoyable
summer.
Our June outing to the Beaverkill was, as always, a
rousing success. Good fishing, good food (and drink), good weather, and great camaraderie. It
doesn’t get much better. Thanks, Jeff Plackis.
There’s still time to sign up for our Fall outing to the Farmington River from September 28-30.

A group of us were again able to meander out west to the Montana area in July and get in some
great fishing and take in the natural beauty of this area. If you haven’t been out to these locales then
you must put it on your wish list. I know that in a few months from now I can convince Peter
Dubno to give another of his great “Fishing Montana” presentations at one of our monthly chapter
meetings.
By the way don’t miss Peter’s ever popular “Steelhead Fishing in Northern New York” presentation
at our next monthly chapter meeting on September 18. Remember Steelhead season is just around
the corner. A group of us will be heading up to the Buffalo/Rochester area in late October to chase
those chrome beauties as we have done for the last several years.
Sadly I have to mention the recent passing of Bob Maass, a founding member and past president of
our chapter who also held many leadership positions both in our local chapter and on the state
council. Please see the photo montage on page 7 dedicated to Bob. Our sincere condolences go out
to his entire family. He will be missed.
During our August Board meeting (we do meet over the summer) I created the new position of
Calendar Coordinator. Peter Dubno graciously volunteered to take on this position. Anyone wishing
to plan an LITU event must check with the calendar coordinator for available dates in order to avoid
scheduling conflicts. Thank you Peter for stepping forward and assuming this position.
I’d also like to thank Rick Lewis who volunteered to move from a director’s position on the Board
to the position of Vice President (with the approval of the Board of Directors) which remained unfilled after the June elections. I am looking for people interested in assuming leadership positions
either as Board members or as committee members. If anyone has such
inclinations please feel free to talk to me either at a meeting or privately.
In closing I would like to thank everyone for re-electing me as your President. I do need your help.
Please step up and volunteer when the call goes out.
Remember that your current fresh water fishing license expires September 30.

Wind, solar and healthy
habitat: We don't have to
choose!
Congress is recognizing the value that hunting and
angling opportunities have to sportsmen and women
with a bill introduced Thursday by Rep. Paul Gosar (RAZ) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA). The effort would
balance the burgeoning development of wind and solar
energy by putting money toward conserving the pristine
fisheries and healthy herds of pronghorn, elk and deer
the West is known for.
This legislation is one of three bills in both the House
and Senate which demonstrate that both parties
understand that we as hunters and anglers don't have to
choose between the need for domestic energy and the
need for healthy habitat. We can have both: solar
power and that first ripple of a dry fly as it touches the
glassy surface of the water - wind turbines and that
haunting bugle of an elk on a distant ridge.
"We want our public lands to be great places to fish and
hunt," said Keith Curley, director of government affairs
for Trout Unlimited. "Certainly there is a need for wind
and solar energy. But all energy comes with a price and
all too often it is sportsmen and women who pay it. It
doesn't need to be that way and with legislation such as
this, it won't have to be."
The Public Lands Renewable Energy Development Act,
H.R. 6154, would provide funding to protect and
improve habitat and create access for hunters and
anglers. It does this by establishing royalties and then
using some of those funds to help enhance habitat and
protect the places where development should not occur
- the places you love to fish and hunt.
Those places are in high demand and important to communities across the country. A report released by the
Department of the Interior showed recreational visits to
public lands alone generated nearly $48.7 billion in
economic activity and supported 403,000 jobs nationwide in 2011. So it goes without saying that maintaining
those lands is important.
"We've seen what happens when there's a rush to develop. We've seen our hunting and fishing opportunities
decline in areas where oil and gas drilling has been
poorly executed, and we don't want to see the same
thing happen with wind and solar," said Brad Powell,
western energy director for Trout Unlimited. "We're already moving into a world where energy comes from
wind turbines and solar panels but right now we lack the
resources to balance energy development with fish and
wildlife conservation. This bill gives us some security
that as we move forward, the lands that we as hunters
and anglers value will be protected."

License Renewal Time

Annual NY freshwater fishing licenses
expire at the end of September and we wanted to remind our members to renew before they fish into the
fall.
The NY fishing license can be purchased
online, the downside is, it can take up to 2 weeks
before your license arrives but they allow you to print
out a receipt which is acceptable proof of having a
license. The receipt is good for 14 days only.
It would be a good idea to also sign up for the
NY Marine Waters registry for 2012 at the same time
you purchase your license. You can do this at many of
the usual places you purchase your license. This NY
Registry will be enforced for marine waters in the
future.

Brook Trout
Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are the only trout
native to much of the eastern United States. Arguably
the most beautiful freshwater fish, brook trout survive
in only the coldest and cleanest water.
Brook trout serve as indicators of the health of the watersheds they inhabit. Strong wild brook trout
populations demonstrate that stream or river ecosystem
is healthy and that water quality is excellent. A decline
in brook trout populations can serve as an early warning that the health of an entire aquatic system is at risk.
In 2005, in recognition of the need to address regional
and range-wide threats to brook trout, a group of public
and private entities formed the Eastern Brook Trout
Joint Venture to halt the decline of brook trout and restore fishable populations. Please read the Status and
Threats Report that documents the current brook trout
populations across 17 eastern states.
Trout Unlimited’s Conservation Success Index (CSI)
combines brook trout population data generated from
the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture, and many other
types of landscape information that evaluates the
habitat integrity and future security of that land. The
CSI scores the sub watersheds, or lands typically containing 25 to 75 miles of streams, where brook trout
historically survived.
The CSI provides a host of maps that illustrate the
status of brook trout and their habitat across the Eastern
brook trout range – from Maine to Georgia to
Ohio. An interactive mapping tool allows you to use
Google Earth or Google Maps to fly around your state
and examine specific sub watersheds in your region.
TU staff, TU chapters and our partners are using the
CSI to prioritize areas for brook trout protection, restoration, reintroduction and education across the East.
