President’s Corner

Thank you to all that attended a wonderful Annual
Banquet on March 23rd. A special thank you to those
volunteers that helped us put it on and worked hard
getting donations. Approximately 130 items were
auctioned, raffled off or given out that evening. I
believe that the 115 attendees is a record and our total
proceeds also exceeded the usual fundraising effort for
the event. This success will allow us to continue our
important conservation work and forge ahead with
education projects such as Trout in the Classroom.
In addition to banquet funds the chapter continues to
apply for grants and we have just received word of
award for a large contract from the Natural Resources
Conservation Service, USDA. This two year project is
to implement the Dickinson Town Park restoration
project where we will restore 1,500 feet of upper Deep
Brook, resurface a tributary stream and mitigate the
associated wetlands in coordination with Newtown
Parks and Recreation.
Our volunteers make us strong so please join us in
helping to make our chapter stronger and continue as
one of the best TU chapters in CT. Thank you again
and now we can finally look up and start to think
about getting outside and fishing.
April 10 Meeting
We will meet at the Miry Brook Firehouse
south of the airport in Danbury at 7:00 PM.
We will have a fly-tying session, coffee and
snacks at 6:30 PM with the meeting starting
at 7:30 PM.

The name Hoagy Carmichael might want to make
you break into a chorus of “Stardust,” but at our
April meeting the name Hoagy Carmichael, Jr.
should remind you of fly fishing and rivers.
Hoagy has agreed to be our guest speaker this
month and is internationally recognized for (at
least) two deep interests in fly fishing. The first is
the bamboo rod. A few years back he made a
great presentation to CVTU about the bamboo
rod, its origin, history, construction and lore. A
talented storyteller, he spun a tale that was both
informative and absorbing.
Hoagy’s second interest, actually a fascination, is
the Grand Cascapedia River on the Gaspe
Peninsula in the province of Quebec. His
fascination has led him to research every aspect of
this legendary Atlantic salmon river. He has
taken the information he gathered and authored a
wonderful book called The Grand Cascapedia
River, A History. Starting with the Mi’gmaq
Nation in 100 BC, through the first Europeans in
1534, and the upper crust fishermen of the
twentieth century, he introduces you to the river
and its people. From the native lodgings to the
luxurious lodges of the wealthy, he shows you life
on the river. But the main theme of the book
remains the same; the magnificent river and its
fishing that fostered this history which is the
subject of the book. Join us on April 9th for a

This is the last guest speaker until we start again
in September. May will bring our last meeting
for the spring/summer and will feature fly tying
demonstration and teaching by 3 or 4 of our tyers
and casting clinics by a couple of our better
casters – accompanied by pizza!

TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM

We would like to say Thank You to everyone who attended the Annual Fundraising Banquet and Congratulations to
everyone who worked so hard to make it a success. James mentioned the Banquet total donations in his President’s
Message, but I would like to point out that we received $1,425.00 in donations earmarked for the Trout in the Classroom
Program.
We are presently in the midst of our fundraising program, with the assistance of Doug Peterson’s grant writing magic, and
by the time you read this we will have submitted several proposals. If you have any connections with civic organizations,
businesses or corporate entities that you feel could be of assistance, please contact me.
Next month will wrap up the ‘06/’07 Trout in the Classroom project. We are presently matching schools with streams from
the approved list given us by the DEP. By the end of April we should have released all of the trout and they will be on their
own. Then it’s clean up the equipment and plan for next year and the eight new schools we will be sponsoring.

Dear Friends,
The trout in the classroom idea is a fun idea because it teaches you to be responsible. It also teaches you to clean the water
and lets you tell people that this idea is fun. I like the trout in the classroom idea because it makes you proud of what you do
because if you take care of them correctly you have made you and others environment better by making more nature into
this world. But if you are irresponsible you will kill the trout or a spike will come and kill a lot offish. DO NOT put dirt in
the tank it will get squishy and the trout could die from that. And when they are eggs you have to put a STYROFOAM
cover over it or else they will die. You should have trout in your classroom because if you do this others ,will catch on and
help this become a fun program.
Deep Brook/Pootatuck Conservation Projects

Are you ready? We have proposed dates for our spring macroinvetebrate sampling on the morning of Saturday,
May 5th with a backup date of Saturday May 12th. This will be our last sampling under the Newtown oil spill SEP
program Please check your calendars and let Joe Hovious (Joe.Hovious@cvtu.org) know by return email if you are
interested in another experience into the secret life of the "riffle dwelling, benthic, macroinvetebrates". Hopefully we will
have no rain, warm weather, and reasonable water levels and will see lots of organisms. We now have 4 official sampling
events plus historical sampling so we should be able to see trends developing. We'll have a quick discussion of these
during the training.
Our plans are coming together for some significant projects on Deep Brook. We currently have several grants submitted
for restoration work and water quality sampling work. Our chances are looking good that we will be successful and our
projects will go ahead this year in continuation of our overall watershed improvement strategy for Deep Brook and the
Pootatuck River.
A focal point will be a very large and visible project in Newtown's Dickinson Park where we will restore nearly 2,000 feet
of stream, riparian buffer and associated wetlands on upper Deep Brook. Another will be a storm water quality sampling,
additional thermal monitoring and extended macro invertebrate sampling program in the Wild Trout Management Area
and upper Deep Brook.

A near final trip calendar for 2007 is posted on the forum, and reproduced below for those of you who do not use the internet.

May Trip to central PA to fish with Keystone Anglers. Weekend of May 19. Max of 9 people. Guides available.
June 1,2,3 Trip to Fish Westfield River with FVTU. No Massachusetts license required. $35 fee to FVTU. Camping
overnight.
June Trip to central PA to fish Green Drake hatch with Rocco Rosamilia weekdays between Jun 2/3 and 9/10 ; max of 9
roomers and 6 guided fishermen.
June Striper Fishing on Cape Cod weekend of June 16 (Note: there is an Elks Convention on Cape Cod the weekend prior,
when we would normally have gone) . Make your own reservations by the end of March against a block of 8 rooms at the
Green Harbor. Rooms are $142 per night for two people on the weekend; extra weeknights are $94 per room for two people.
July (weekend to be determined) fishing on Connecticut River headwaters in northern NH; make your own reservation
against a block of rooms at Lopstick Lodge in the name of CVTU.
September 29 Ausable River Trip. Make your own reservations by (deadline to be determined) against a block of rooms at
the Hungry Trout in the name of CVTU.
November Connetquot State Park Outing first Thursday in November.
There are two remaining trips still to be defined. First, Nutmeg chapter will be sponsoring a trip to the Catskills in late May or
early June, and our members will be invited; details will be announced when I find out what is happening. Second, I am
arranging a July trip to fish the headwaters of the Connecticut River, but I do not yet have a date to announce.
We will continue signing people up for trips at the March chapter meeting. Deposits of $40 will be required to hold your
spot on either of the central Pennsylvania trips because the number of attendees on each trip is limited to 9. When you
register, please be prepared to tell me if you wish a guide on Friday, Saturday, and/ or Sunday on the May and June
Pennsylvania trips. Rocco is currently doing some guide scheduling for the week of June 4-8 (the green drake hatch trip), and
we will set the exact fishing dates that week shortly.
If you wish to sign up for a trip, and will not be at the February meeting, please mail your deposit check and reservation note
(include your name, telephone number, an email address, which trip you are signing up for, and guide desires) to Gary
Whipple at 121 Route 37, New Fairfield, CT 06812. Check the forum periodically for updates, and if you have any
questions, private message or email Gary Whipple.

Ask Brook
Advice from the membership
This column publishes fly-fishing or fly tying “how to” questions from the readership, and solicit members’
responses on how they have successfully dealt with the question at hand.
That’s right, you’re the experts! There is no CVTU expert hiding behind a green curtain who will answer
all of these questions, like Ann Landers does; the intent is for members to share their knowledge and
experience to answer other members’ questions.
Each month we’ll select answers to publish in the newsletter. All answers that are submitted will be
available on the Ask Brook Forum on the CVTU website (more info below).
To prime Brook’s pump, we have the following question:
I recently started tying flies and noticed that as I went down to smaller nymphs (#18 and smaller)
the 6/0 thread I was using started to look way too big on the hook. So I've picked up some 8/0 and
am making good progress with some good looking (at least to me) flies.
When I tie larger flies (#12-16) should I be going back up to a 6/0 thread or do you veterans use
8/0 on everything?
First Response we got:
I use 8/0 on most everything. I switch to 6/0 occasionally on nymphs size 12 and bigger just to cut
down on the number of winds to build up a head, etc. I use 6/0 and sometimes 3/0 and/or
monocord when I need more toughness or when I have to pull down hard (such as deer hair, lots
of material thicknesses on saltwater flies). I also have some 10/0 that I use when I'm going really
small (20 - 32). Also, I think one of the secrets is to use as few turns as you can -- being judicious
and drawing them tight.
