OPA holds monthly dinner meetings at the C. E. Page Building on Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City. Distinguished guest speakers present educational and safety related programs at the monthly dinner meetings. OPA hosts monthly Fly Aways for lunch or dinner and weekend Fly Aways to interesting destinations. OPA, through its charitable non-profit corporation, accepts money or property donated to fund the Vic Jackson Memorial Scholarship Fund which is awarded annually to a college student with career aspirations in the field of aviation. Mike Grimes is in charge of the nominating committee for officers and directors. Please call him if you are willing to serve OPA. It is a fun thing to do and you get better acquainted with OPA members. Elections will be at the August meeting. Also Keith Leafdale is resigning as Fly Away Chairman. He has done an incredible job; but now he and Delinda will be moving closer to relatives. We will miss them and his help in OPA. OPA June Fly Away When: June 11, 2016 - Wheels Down 10:30 - 11:30 and Park at the Museum Where: Tulsa International Airport (KTUL) What: A modest lunch and a great Tulsa Air and Space Museum and Planetarium Why: Education, Fun, Fly our planes Who: Us, as in OPA members and guests – fly in or drive in Rain? Just drive – it is actually quicker unless you live close to your hanger. Cost: $20 covers the lunch and all the museum fees. We are going as guests of Lee Hubby, Chairman of the Museum's Board of Directors, and he says a “head count” (or foot count divided by 2) will be helpful. He would like to know about how many planes and people. There is not a restaurant at the museum or open nearby so the museum volunteers will fix a lunch for us – hamburgers/hot dogs. Email flyaway@opa.link or me cealas@aol.com or Keith – leafdale2@att.net. If you have questions, my phone number is 405-833-7201. What Else: Your cell phone – if you leave it at Braums – the manager would like an easy way to contact you if your phone is “locked”. There is an app for putting a message on the “wallpaper” on your phone so a finder of the phone will know what number to call, so whoever answers the “not lost” phone can let you know who has your phone. Why this suggestion? The manager at Braums in Henrietta somehow got my cell phone number from a lost phone. I could not help him because it wasn't mine. Oshkosh: It is time to start planning. If you have not been there, you are missing out on a really great time. I am looking forward to my 11th trip. I always fly my plane or ride in someone else's plane. I like camping in the north 40. Mike Grimes usually drives up in his motor home. My friend, Doug, always drives in his pickup with his wife. And he hauls camping stuff for friends who don't have capacity in their planes. Oshkosh is the busiest airport in the world for about 10 days and has the widest variety of planes anywhere. How long to be there? Three days minimum, but more is better. If you are thinking about going to Oshkosh for the first time, visit with someone who has been. June 2016 OPA News 3 Highlights from the May Dinner Meeting Thanks to Susie Grimes for this article Gene Downing, an Angel flight pilot, presented the program at the OPA meeting on May 5th. He was an aide to senators in the early 1970s and spent his life in oil and gas. Angel Flight was started by founder Doug Vincent to serve patients in need of transportation to or from medical treatment. It is a 501 c 3 non-profit charitable organization of pilots, volunteers, and friends. Angel flight is financially supported by the pilots who fly the missions by donating the use of their airplanes and operating expenses and by contributions from individuals, service organizations, or corporations. Angel Flight will arrange free transportation for any legitimate, charitable, or medical related need. They do not receive any financial aid from any government or insurance entity. There is never a fee or any kind charged to the patient or health care provider, and there is not a age limit for patients who need this service. Patients do have to meet several requirements for flight. They must be ambulatory and able to fly in a small non-pressurized airplane without a restroom for the duration of the flight. They must also have a physician’s approval for the flight and a back-up plan in case of severe weather or other mitigating circumstances. They must sign a waiver with Angel Flight and have ground transportation upon arrival. Gene explains everything about the flight to the patient and does everything he can to put the patient at ease. He flew a three year old from Branson to Kansas City for treatment for a vocal chord disorder and has flown burn victims to burn units that could treat the patient. An unusual flight was flying a grandmother home so she could die with dignity. He also flew a lady from Liberal, Kansas, to Kansas City for treatment, but she could not recover from her illness and passed away. He flew her body back to Liberal for burial. Pilots who volunteer for Angel Flight enjoy sharing their skills and their love of flying while providing a service to those in need. Angel Flight can help people have a better quality of life. Keith Leafdale and his wife will be moving in the next three or four months. Thank you, Keith, for all your work in OPA and on the fly aways. We wish you happiness in your new home. Cirrus Party Dierks Guests at the Bentley May meeting were Paul Woodson, Chris Dunlap, and Linda Davis. Mitch Williams is starting a charter service. Greg Deplois is beginning flying lessons.
