elcome to Basalt, Colorado in the heart of the Roaring
Fork Valley. From our quaint historic old town next to
Basalt Mountain to our bustling Willits Town Center, you will
find everything you desire in our picturesque mountain town.
Basalt is the confluence of rivers, recreation and culture. We
boast that two Gold Medal trout streams meet within our
town limits.
The Rio Grande Trail, a valley-wide bike trail, connects
Basalt to other valley communities. If you’re a foodie, Basalt
is one of the best kept secrets in Colorado and the western
United States, and we have amazing and locally owned
galleries and shops.
Our community is finishing up a new master plan for our downtown corridor that will

We are honored to live and work in a community where
family and economic values are balanced, where the past is

town America and we welcome you with open arms! Take
a stroll through our beautiful art galleries, shop our locally
owned businesses, dine in our amazing restaurants, explore
our wilderness, and just relax along the banks of our Gold

1 Downtown Basalt
With beautiful Victorian buildings,
condominiums, restaurants, art galleries,
an art center, Town Hall, the Chamber of
Commerce Caboose, the Basalt Library
and the Post Office, historic downtown
Basalt is an eclectic combination of
commercial, residential and government
use. There is pedestrian access to the
hillside neighborhood behind Midland
Avenue where the block is separated by
landscaped alleys. Riverside Plaza and
Riverwalk offer a variety of additional condominiums, real estate offices, banks,
retail shops, coffee houses and galleries.
2 Basalt Business Center/
Southside
Situated on the south side of Highway
82 and Basalt Avenue, this area is a
healthy mixture of a residential neighborhood (consisting of single family
homes, duplexes, two parks, a mixed-use
element, home to Basalt High School
and Aspen Valley Hospital’s After Hours
Urgent Care Clinic), as well as automotive, home furnishings, and other retail
and service businesses.
3 Emma
On Highway 82 between Historic
Downtown Basalt and Willits sits Emma
in unincorporated Pitkin County. There
10 you will find an old Victorian house,
Emma Store, and Emma Schoolhouse.
The Denver & Rio Grande Western
Emma train station which no longer
exists passed just behind the area of
the school house and provided daily
passenger service. The rail lines have
since been replaced with a paved bike
and pedestrian trail that extends from
Glenwood Springs to Aspen and passes
through the area offering spectacular
views of Basalt Mountain, Mount Sopris
and working ranches and farmlands.
4 Mid-Valley Medical Center
Located on East Valley Road off Highway 82 and Original Road, the Medical
Center complex houses physicians
and clinics specializing in a variety of
medical areas such as women’s care,
pediatrics, orthopedics, dentist office,
and a fitness facility. The area is also
home to a condominium complex and
the Aspen Basalt campground.
5 Mid-Valley Design +
Industrial Center
Interior designers, a fitness facility
and world-renowned photographers are
just a few of the businesses that make
up the Mid Valley Design Center. Located off Highway 82 and Willits Lane, the
Mid-Valley Design Center is the home of
Woody Creek Distillers, and the Valley’s
Federal Express (FedEx) office.
Basalt COLOR ADO | confluence of rivers, recreation and culture
6 Orchard Plaza
Annexed into Basalt in 1994 and offering residents a variety of shopping and
services, Orchard Plaza is the shopping
center located off Highway 82 and Willits
Lane. Including a grocery store, liquor and
pet stores, dining establishments, a UPS
store, nail salon, movie theater and banks
reside in the plaza.
7 El Jebel
El Jebel is an unincorporated area
just across Highway 82 from the official
Basalt Town limits. There lies the local
bowling alley, a garden center, a preschool, restaurants, and other retail and
service businesses along with residences.
8 Willits Town Center
Willits is a traditional community – a
rich mix of houses and townhouses;
parks and playgrounds; shops and businesses and home to the recently opened
and much anticipated Whole Foods
Market. Willits neighborhoods are organized around parks and safe streets, and
stores are planned along a conventional
Main Street and a Town Square. The rolling terrain of the Village Green stretches
the length of Willits and includes a lake,
a soccer field, playgrounds, biking and
walking trails, and fields and meadows.
The Willits Town Center, still in development, has restaurants, shops with lofts
and condominiums upstairs, opportunities for local, regional and national
businesses, a performing arts center,
and a soon to be open hotel.

Further up Midland Avenue, one of
the more recent additions to Basalt’s
dining scene is Heather’s Savory
Pies and Tapas Bar, whose meat and
vegetable potpies transport you back
to mom’s kitchen table. The pies take
about 20 minutes to prepare, but
they’re well worth the wait, and for dessert, the Key Lime pie is some of the
best between here and South Florida.
If you’re looking to close out the
evening with a nightcap and a game of
pool or just hoping to watch a basketball game, try Stubbies Sports Bar. Like
many of its hard working patrons, it gets
the job done.

neighborhoods, the hip and modern
Willits area has quickly established a
respectable restaurant row whose eateries draw diners from throughout the

Willits is the welcoming and unpretentious burg of El Jebel. Although the

With its surplus of Italian-inspired

El Jebel as the Little Italy of the Roaring

Basalt has many opportunities for fun. In order to have fun it
is important to stay safe. There are a number of important safety
tips that you may find helpful.
High Altitude tips
Basalt is at about 6,600 feet above sea level. When you first
arrive acclimatize yourself for a period of time with light activity. At
high elevations, the atmosphere is thinner; there is less oxygen
and less humidity available to you than at sea level. Throbbing
headaches, feeling weak, lazy, dizzy and/or nauseous are all
symptoms warning you to decrease your activity level and increase
your water intake.
Stay Warm
At this elevation, the weather can change quickly. Take frequent
breaks from the cold or heat. Even if the forecast calls for warm
weather, it is important to have warm clothing in case there is a
sudden change in temperature while you are out enjoying the day
or when the sun sets. It is wise to layer your clothes, no matter
what the season. A t-shirt, wool sweater, nylon windbreaker with
a hood and a bottle of water are basic equipment for just about
any summer activity. Winter sports enthusiasts should wear warm,
waterproof gloves, hat, and socks, plenty of warm, water-resistant
clothing and goggles or sunglasses with adequate UV protection.
Sun Safety
Sunburns at altitude can be more severe for a number of reasons,
namely there is less atmosphere to absorb the ultraviolet rays.
Be sure to protect yourself, use sun protective clothing, including
a hat with a three-inch brim, sunglasses(remember, if your skin
burns more easily at high altitudes, your eyes will too), use ample
sunscreen on those parts of your skin that will be exposed – face,
neck, top of ears, hands – and wear SPF lip balm. Even on cloudy
days!
River Safety
Some tips to help you stay safe while you are on the river:
> Tell someone where you are going, when you expect to return,
and where to call if you don’t.
> NEVER BOAT OR FISH ALONE.
> Wear a properly fitted Personal Flotation Device (PFD) at all
times when you are in or near the river.
> Know about the dangers of hypothermia and how to deal with
it. Know early signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and
dehydration in hot weather.
> Carry a first aid kit and know how to use it.
> Wear wading shoes or boot-foot waders with soles that grip the
type of bottom you’re on.
Snow and Ice Safety
Tread carefully in snow and ice. The streets and sidewalks can
be deceptively slick during the winter months! Footwear with
adequate traction is key to keeping on your feet! When driving
in snow the most important thing to remember is to slow down.
Most accidents are caused by driving too fast for conditions.
Living with Wildlife
Keep trash cleaned up, do not allow food to sit outside unattended. If you are camping, please keep food stored in closed
containers and sleep well away from food. Keep pets close by,
it is best to keep
pets on a leash to
avoid wandering.
Keep a close eye
on children; do not
allow them to play
outside after dusk
or before dawn without close supervision. If you will
be outside during
dawn or dusk, be
sure to make lots
of noise and make
your presence
known. If you
encounter wildlife
keep your distance,
stay calm and back
away slowly. If the
animal approaches
you in an aggressive manner fight
