MDF Exhibit at the Minnesota Lakes
Maritime Museum Held Over in 2013
2013 Show Highlights
This year’s exciting show included:
Room to Room starting on Wednesday
Big show Friday and Saturday
The Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum in Alexandria,
Minnesota will once again present its wildly popular
duck hunting exhibit. If you did not get a chance to see
this collection in 2012– you need to get it on this year’s
calendar.
The exhibit features rare duck boats, Ducks Unlimited
“Living Lakes Initiative” Story, wooden decoys from The
Minnesota Decoy Foundation Collection, Oxley’s vintage
photographs, an original John House commemorative
painting and much more.
If you enjoy hunting and the outdoors do not miss this
exhibit. In addition to the rare duck boats and decoys, the
exhibit features the story of Sam Fertig, a market hunter
who spent a great deal of time hunting on Lake Christina.

The “High-Ball”
thoughts from our President
Greetings Members,
This year’s show started out a little slow due to some nasty winter
weather in neighboring states. A lot of people were reporting
heavy snow and that caused some delays for some of the members, but once they all got here,
things started to pick up and the good times started.
Our room to room part of the get-together went very well, and many nice decoys changed hands
through that two day event. When our show started on Friday, you could see that people were
anxious to have some fun. The show was well attended, and all of the tables were full of decoys
and related things. There were some great displays to view. We had some beautiful decoys from
Bill Rigsbee’s collection that he brought along for the Collectors Choice Display. We also had
our Best Bird contest which had some wonderful examples of Mallard decoys which was the
species for this year. We also held our auction on Friday evening which had about 75 decoys
available. Many nice decoys went off to new homes.
It always amazes me how fast four days can go by when we are having a good time. I always
look forward to seeing so many people that I only see a few times a year. These shows are and
always have been a fun and entertaining time for me. Your Board of Directors will be getting
together very soon to start planning next year’s show. Please plan on attending next year’s show.
We will plan on making it a fun event for all.

Miniatures featured at 2013 MDCA Decoy Show
The 2013 display featured miniature decoys by Minnesota carvers.
Carvers were displayed that are featured in Doug Lodermeier’s book
“Minnesota Duck Decoys”. New finds included unknowns for future
identification.
The Board of Directors would like to thank everyone who
brought a miniature carving for the display. The display
for the 2014 show will feature Minnesota decoys by
unknown carvers. Please bring an unknown Minnesota
decoy for display and identification.

Best Bird Contest Results - Mallard
One of the fun events of the show
is the best bird contest. It is open to
all members of the MDCA and their
families. We have four divisions.
They are antique factory, antique hand
carved, modern working and modern
decorative.
This year our show species was the
Mallard. There were 64 birds entered
in this year’s event. The judges had
their hands full trying to pick the
winners in all categories. After the
judging was over, the winning decoys
were put on display with their well
earned ribbons. The members flock
around the display area looking to see
which decoys won.
Start looking at your decoys on those
shelves – 2014 Best Bird Contest will
feature the Pintail.

Auction Highlights
MDCA 2013 Newsletter

It was cold and it was snowy
for our annual Friday night
decoy auction. Have no fear, the
MDCA members turned out in
good force with over 100 bidding
cards distributed. Auctioneer,
John “Doc” Baillie was detained
for professional reasons and was
running late. At 6:00 pm the crowd
was really anxious to “have at”
some of the fine decoys consigned
this year. After a short delay, Joe
Tonelli graciously volunteered to
get the show going. Joe, an icon
in the decoy world started things
out with a bang, getting a nice
applause from the large crowd.
Miraculously, after fighting heavy,
slow traffic & icy roads, “Doc”
showed up to take the hammer.
The auction went well with over
70 decoys changing hands. Some
highlights included a Muehlstein
black duck bringing $1,815, a pair
of Frank Strey canvasbacks $830
and a Detroit grade Mason blue
winged teal $1,415. The auction
included a nice mix of decoys with
a strong showing by some of the
best Minnesota carvers.
This year’s original show button
artwork depicting a Gresser Drake
Mallard by Jay Rendall, brought
the club $240 in pure profit. We
all thank Jay so much for the
fine job he does and donating his
tremendous talent.
The thanks continue with a
wonderful collaboration by many
dedicated members and family.

coordinating the original show
button artwork. Larry Thomforde,
the MDCA Treasurer for the
outstanding job he does year
after year. Barb Hanson, Sherrie
Wegleitner and son Jeremy for
the unbelievable clerking job.

superb ring men. Last, but most
important, are the consignors and
buyers contributing to this fund
raising event. A real coordinated
effort by many makes this annual
event a real success.
This year’s auction filled its 70 lot
limit almost a month ahead of show
date. Some fine decoys are already
consigned for 2014. I apologize
to all the consigners I had to turn
down. Please, try again next year!

Jay Rendall, one of MDCA’s own
member and outstanding water color artist
has graciously donated his talents to the
MDCA.
His beautiful rendering of a Mallard
decoy is featured on the 2013 show button.
The original artwork based on a Gresser
decoy was auctioned on Friday night of the
annual show and gaveled at $240.00.
We are very fortunate to count Jay
as a member and for his very generous
contribution. We would also like to thank
Paul Mikkelson for his continued efforts
in coordinating the project and for the
outstanding results year after year.
Proceeds from the auction and button
sales are vital to the MDCA’s ability to
finance the yearly show.
This year’s button as well as past
buttons are available for sale. See the
bulletin board on page 6 for details.

Once again, our long awaited (M.D.C.A.)
Show is over. What pleasant memories!
Visiting with collectors, the raffle, the
collectors’ choice and Minnesota decoy
displays, the new 2013 button and the
super auction, all great memories for me. There were incredible
entries in the best bird contest too. Thank you all for traveling from
near and far to attend our show. I always have a wonderful time
seeing old friends and old decoys.
As in year’s past, all exhibitor tables were taken. Over 90% of the
tables were rented before the last week of December.
Many new members exhibited this year. Our bright lights and
spacious room was comfortable for visitors and exhibitors.
I thought visitor attendance was up this year. Sales were high for
some exhibitors. I sold a few, bought more, and added four to my
collection. I did my annual trade too.
Thank you again for attending our 2013 Minnesota Decoy
Collectors Association show. See you at the next show here in
Minnesota in 2014. Keep up the hunt! Spread the word! Bring a
buddy next year! Do a trade!

Who We Are
The Minnesota Decoy Foundation was
formed as a nonprofit organization in 1991
to encourage the preservation of decoys
from Minnesota carvers. The foundation
accepts donations of decoys, and related
hunting collectibles, artifacts and
documents as well as monetary donations
to expand and fund a permanent exhibit.
Anyone interested in helping to
promote the foundation’s goals should
contact any of the foundation contacts

listed on the enclosed show flyer.
