Quality, Sustainability
and Fairness
With great pleasure I present to you the new GC Ticker! The clearer structure of news and activities
will be more pleasant to read. Please join me in congratulating the editorial team of our three
Chambers in Shanghai, South China and Beijing on the improved quality of our member magazine.
Quality improvement is also the key issue in times of world economic crisis, both for Western and
Chinese companies alike. Companies are seizing the opportunity to consolidate their quality in
order to meet future world market demands and standards. Thus, ecological sustainability becomes
a growing factor for the improvement of competitiveness. This was stressed at the “Round Table
on Ecological Industrialisation” between Chinese and German Companies, headed by the German
Federal Minister of Environment, Sigmar Gabriel and the Governor of Liaoning Province, Chen
Zhenggao, during the promenade of “Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together”. In Shenyang,
German Companies presented their solutions on future demands for sustainable urban development
in China, leaving a strong positive impression on the audience. Now we are heading towards the
next station in Wuhan in October this year.
Sustainability is also a key requirement within the Chinese stimulus programme of 4 trillion RMB
that is swiftly being implemented. The effect of this is already reflected in recent economic forecast
adjustments of the Chinese GDP for 2009 by international organisations, such as the World Bank
(+7.2% GDP) and OECD (+7.7% GDP).
This positive outlook for China will only be realised with open and transparent markets as
the Chinese Government has proclaimed internationally, which is especially important for the
two world’s leading export nations, Germany and China. The recent statements of the Chinese
government on “Buy Chinese” are therefore irritating and we – as the Chamber of Commerce – ask
for a level playing field for German and international companies.
In order to feel the geographical dimensions that simultaneously divide and link Germany and
China, I will be travelling from Erlangen to Beijing in my vintage Volkswagen Beetle. Hopefully,
I will arrive in China’s capital on August 30th, 2009. The successful completion of the trip will be
celebrated at the German embassy with the participants, family and friends, and hopefully some
members of the German Chamber of Commerce in China.
Best wishes for the summer months and enjoy reading!
Yours sincerely,
GCC All-China Board Members
