Our stamps (styles, themes, images, sets, and quality) are completely exclusive and cannot be found anywhere else, including retail stores. Accessories, either created exclusively for or distributed by Stampin’ Up!, can add an additional level of depth and creativity. High Quality Products Every product offered by Stampin’ Up! meets strict quality assurance criteria. We carefully research, produce, and test every Stampin’ Up! product to ensure that our demonstrators and customers receive only the very best. We also offer business supplies to make it easier for you to build a successful home-based business. True Colours In this guide, you’ll see samples of colours that certain products are available in. Because of the differences in computer and printer settings, these colours might not match the actual colour of the product exactly. The colour samples are guides meant to give you a general idea of the product colour. This guide provides more details on products offered by Stampin’ Up! For pricing information, see the current Stampin’ Up! Idea Book & Catalogue. About the Guide This guide contains information about products available in the Idea Book & Catalogue and business supplies. The products are listed in alphabetical order. Each entry provides useful information about the product. If you have questions that aren’t answered by the Product Guide, please call Demonstrator Support. You’ll also want to refer to the appendix found in this guide. It explains how to assemble your stamps and contains information that can help you plan your orders and projects. © 2008 STAMPIN’ UP! Do not use a cleanser. Gently brush in all directions; scrubbing vigorously or back and forth over a small area will wear the fabric. We do not recommend using it in conditions where it might become soiled, such as for a recipe book or school binder. Make sure to show them how they can pull colours to blend and soften them. Apply a Rub-On to a prescored card, such as our Greeting Cards or Love Notes, and you’ll be surprised how quick you’re finished! Upsell Opportunity Designer Series paper, Greeting Cards, Love Notes, On Board chipboard FYI For best results, cut out your Rub-On image and remove it from the backing sheet. Lay the image on a flat surface, and rub it lightly with your finger to hold it in place. Then firmly rub the image with the wooden stick (included with the Rub-Ons) to transfer it to your project. You’ll know the image has transferred completely when the image becomes lighter on the transfer sheet. Pull up slowly on the transfer sheet, being careful not to slide it. If the image hasn’t transferred completely, simply lay the sheet back down and try again. You can apply Rub-Ons over stamped images. However, make sure that the image has been stamped in Craft ink; Rub-Ons don’t adhere well to Classic ink. If you want to transfer Rub-On images to a small embellishment such as a button, you may want to transfer the image to the embellishment before you adhere the embellishment to your project. Stick the embellishment to a smooth surface, such as a cellophane bag, using 56 © 2008 STAMPIN’ UP! Rub-Ons (cont.) SNAIL Adhesive. Trim the image from the Rub-On sheet and lay it over your embellishment. Rub your finger over the image to help hold it in place, then transfer the image completely using the wooden stick. Custom mounting makes a stamp distinctly your own. Trim the rubber first, and then decide which stamp goes on which block before peeling off the paper. Put the stickers on the backs of the wooden mounts (trimming the stickers if necessary), and then stick the stamp on the reverse. Make sure you apply the rubber and the label in the same direction on the block - you don’t want to stamp with the label right side up but get an image that is upside down. (Turn the label over and view it from underneath; the rubber image should be facing the same direction when applied to your wood block.) Trimming Tips Trimming your stamps has a big impact on the quality of the stamped image. Be sure to instruct your new customers on how to trim the rubber. Following are a few helpful trimming tips. 1. Trim the rubber close to the image to 4. Stampin’ Memories Products Scrapbooking is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, and many people are buying stamps and stamping products with the intention of using them in scrapbooks. At Stampin’ Up!, we hope you’ll profit from this trend. We want you to be successful and confident when demonstrating scrapbooking. Two things will help: First, look for the Stampin’ Memories™ symbol in the Idea Book & Catalogue and this Product Guide next to the products that are the best choice for long-term preservation. This symbol indicates card stocks and papers that are acid free, buffered, and lignin free and inks that are acid free, fade resistant, and non-bleeding. Second, read the material below to familiarise yourself with scrapbooking terms, and refer to the charts at the end of this section. You’ll be ready to help customers find a wide range of quality products suitable for preserving a lifetime of precious moments. The most important thing is to remember to have fun! A scrapbook is a family art piece that will be stored on a bookshelf or coffee table and will be handled by lots of people. It’s not an untouchable historical document destined for a museum or archival vault. It will not exist in a totally sterile environment. We hope your scrapbooks will come into frequent contact with certain highly acidic elements - human fingertips! So don’t worry too much. If you treat your albums with the same conscientious care you give all your treasures, your memories will stay vibrant and beautiful for you, your friends, and your family for many years to come! Is it archival? True archival quality (as defined by museums and other archivists) would require that your albums be protected against any dust, light, and oils (as on fingers). We envision collecting our memories to share with our families and friends today and in the future. Rather than focus on the word 'archival,' which may be somewhat vague, we prefer to use specific terms so your customers will know the qualities offered by specific products. Is it acid free? Acid is a major preservation problem. If a manufacturer labels a product 'acid free,' it means that it does not contain harmful acids that may cause the product to deteriorate or turn brittle over time. You can get acidfree products for any preservation need, so make certain that all inks, adhesives, and papers you use in your scrapbooks are acid free. If you are considering a product that gives a measurement of acid content, do not select anything with a number higher than 8.5 or lower than 6.5. Seven would be perfectly neutral. Products listed as pH neutral are safe for scrapbooking. Your first line of defence in any preservation project is to get your photos and other materials out of an acidic environment. For example, until you are ready to mount your photos in a scrapbook, store them in an acid-free environment. Our page protectors and Craft Keepers are an excellent choice. Do not use shoeboxes or the paper or plastic envelopes in which photos are returned from the photo processor. If you want to preserve items that may be acidic (such as theatre tickets or newspaper clippings), we recommend that you photocopy them. Photocopying newspaper clippings also solves the problem of high lignin content (defined below) in newsprint. Is it lignin free? Lignin is a naturally occurring stiffening agent found in all trees and left in some paper products. It causes yellowing and brittleness over time. You’ll want to choose lignin-free papers for your scrapbooks. 90 © 2008 STAMPIN’ UP! Is it buffered? Buffered paper has had an alkaline substance added to it during the manufacturing process. The alkaline substance neutralizes acid and helps neutralize acid in other products. Purchasing buffered paper with the belief that it will protect your scrapbook pages from all the acids introduced by other sources, however, may lead to a false sense of security. There is no guarantee that buffering will prevent acid damage. We have included this information in case your customers ask. Stampin’ Up! offers a wide selection of acid-free papers, including our exclusive card stock, suitable for scrapbooks and recommends that you use only acid-free (or pH neutral) papers for preserving your memories. If you want to know whether a particular paper offered by Stampin’ Up! is buffered, check the individual product descriptions. What about card stock issues? Using quality dyes in coloured paper, coloured card stock, and patterned paper is essential to inhibit fading. It is difficult to tell by looking at new paper whether quality dyes were used. Your best bet is to buy from a reputable company that represents its papers as suitable for scrapbooks. Stampin’ Up!’s sturdy exclusive card stock is acid free and lignin free, and we use high-quality dyes, so you can be assured the card stock you choose from us will meet your needs in preserving your treasures and memories. Stampin’ Up! employs a quality specialist who has set up quality standards with the mills that make our card stock, so you can be assured that you will always receive the best. Which should I choose - dye or pigment ink? Dye inks are more economical and faster drying. Classic Stampin’ Pads and Stampin’ Write markers are dye inks. They are acid free and can be used in scrapbooks. They are not, however, formulated to be fade resistant and nonbleeding. The lighter colours are more susceptible to fading than the darker colours. Pigment inks are typically much thicker than dye inks and can be heat set or embossed to dry quickly. Stampin’ Write journalers are pigment inks. They are permanent and will not bleed. Pigment inks are more resistant to fading than most dye inks. Over time, metallic pigment inks may flake; if you use these inks in your scrapbooks, we recommend embossing with a clear embossing powder. What about plastics? Petroleum-based plastics are as dangerous to your photographs and documents as acid. Be certain you choose photo sheet protectors that are made from polyester, polyethylene, Mylar, or polypropylene (the best choice is polypropylene, the material from which Stampin’ Up!’s sheet protectors are made). Talking about photos … Many black-and-white photographs are produced on fibre paper; therefore, if you are serious about the archival standard that says any process you use must be reversible, don’t use adhesives on the back of black-and-white photos, as they will tear when removed. Use adhesive-backed corners or punch corners. Colour photos have a resin-coated backing - you can mount them with acid-free glue or tape but use minimal amounts (a dab in each corner or along each short end is plenty). 91 © 2008 STAMPIN’ UP! General scrapbooking guidelines • Don’t use 'magnetic' albums, even if they’re labelled acid free. Repeatedly peeling up the plastic will eventually destroy your photos. • Don’t store your photographs in airtight plastic containers. If it’s a tight-sealing plastic bag, do not seal the bag completely - leave a small pinhole for air circulation. • Don’t laminate items to include in your scrapbook. • Don’t use rubber cement in scrapbooks. • Do check with your local library for further information regarding scrapbooking. Standards of care The way you store your projects will have as much impact on their longevity as the components of which they are made. The best way to protect your scrapbooks from deterioration is to keep them in a clean environment with good air circulation; low light levels; and moderate, constant temperature and relative humidity. • • • • If you want to get a long life out of your scrapbooks, store them in a room that is regulated for comfort. If you live in an area with high relative humidity, try to store your projects in a room with good air circulation to lessen the risk of mould growth. Exposure to light will fade, discolour, and weaken paper; limit your album’s exposure to sunlight and fluorescent light. Average household tungsten bulbs are far less harmful, because they give off less ultraviolet light. Never store your scrapbooks in an attic, basement, garage, or shed, all of which are prone to temperatureand relative humidity fluctuations. There is also the added danger of being more exposed to water damage or insects and rodents. With these guidelines in mind, you are prepared to scrapbook for yourself and to present it in your workshops. We are certain you’ll find this part of your Stampin’ Up! business personally rewarding and a wonderful business builder. Stampin’ Up! offers a wide range of products created for long-term use. Using high-quality products is the best beginning for your scrapbooks. Embossing Products Two kinds of embossing can add wonderful texture to your stamped projects. Heat embossing with an embossing powder and heat tool adds a beautiful raised dimension to your artwork by giving your lines or coloured images depth and shine. 92 © 2008 STAMPIN’ UP! Ink Pads Stampin’ Up! carries a wide variety of ink pads for every stamping need. There are two basic types of ink: dye and pigment. Dye inks come in a full range of vibrant colours. Stampin’ Up!’s Classic Stampin’ Pads and StazOn pads are formulated in dye inks to get the brilliant colours you want for your artwork. You can use dye inks on glossy or matte finish card stock or paper. Some controversy exists about which type of ink - dye or pigment - is best suited for use in scrapbooks. Many scrapbookers prefer pigment inks because they are more permanent; that is, they resist fading (with proper care) and won’t bleed through pages. Dye inks are less expensive, and since they dry much faster, there is no problem with smearing. Classic Stampin’ Pads have the following features: • • • • • • • • Approximately 3-3/4" x 2-3/4" [9.5 x 7 cm] pad surface (4-1/2" x 3-5/8"[11.4 x 9.8 cm] case size) Large, easy finger grips New larger size inks large stamps more quickly Open lid snaps in place for easy handling Optional angled pad surface Exclusive patented design Ink colour printed on the flip top lid and each end of the case for easy identification Colour family symbol printed on each end of the case for easy grouping A Note on Ink Refills Your pads will be long lasting if you use ink refills. Stampin’ Up! carries refill inks for all its pads. We encourage you to purchase refill bottles at the same time you purchase your pads to ensure you never run out of your favourite colours. 93 © 2008 STAMPIN’ UP! Paper Products Paper products provide the background for your stamped artwork. A range of weights, textures, and finishes adds uniqueness and infinite beauty to your projects. Dye-coloured papers and notecards may vary among dye lots. Vellum is a sheer, translucent paper.
