The end of another school year is fast approaching. It is always a bittersweet time of the year when the Class of 2105 gets ready, with great anticipation and excitement, for their senior class trip and of course graduation day. Ellen Green, Assistant Director of Institutional Advancement, Parent and Alumni Relations As the Academy matures, so do its founding faculty, gracefully of course! At the end of this academic year, my, good friend, colleague, and founding faculty member, Mr. Charles A. Newell, Jr., will be retiring. His contributions to the Academy are numerous. Chuck has been a history teacher, a department chair, our Commodore of the Boathouse, and so very much more. But he will be most celebrated as a stellar teacher, advisor, and mentor to our students over the past 13 years. We will honor him and celebrate his long and distinguished career at the Academy with a dessert reception on May 4, 2015. Included in this issue of Pathway to the Future, Derek L’Atid, are ways you may honor our seniors and pay tribute to Charles Newell. In addition, we recognize all of our Academy donors who have made charitable gifts thus far this current fiscal year, as well as to thank our devoted Academy volunteers. On behalf of the Academy I wish to express my sincerest appreciation to you all for your invaluable support. Ellen The official American Hebrew Academy Eagles Emporium is now available online!! It is a story in which a penniless immigrant creates success, the ideal fairy tale in which the United States is the land of opportunity, a place where dreams can come true. For Eva Moshkovich, who grew up in Moldova, the poorest country in Europe, the American Dream is no myth. At the American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro, NC, foreign students are put on the fast track to achieving their dreams through the transformative power of education. The Academy, founded in 2001, is the only international Jewish college prep boarding school in the world, where intellectually adventurous teenagers from all over the country, and the world, come together in a unique environment on a 100-acre lakefront campus. Eva Moshkovich was born in 1992 and raised in Beltsy, Moldova, part of the town’s small Jewish community. Through the generosity of two Greensboro residents, Irene Cohen and Shelly Weiner, Eva was able to attend high school at the American Hebrew Academy, graduate on the honor roll, continue on to a rewarding college education at Mt. Holyoke and launch a career as a computer scientist. Eva Moshkovich ‘10 6 Eva shares: “Coming to the American Hebrew Academy changed my life significantly. It made it possible for me to be where I am in life now. Since my first coming to the Academy 8 years ago, I went from not knowing how to turn on a laptop to becoming a computer scientist with a great job that I love! I will never forget the look on the face of American Hebrew Academy Continued... the IT person when she gave me the laptop and I examined it carefully and then asked how to turn in on.” These achievements would not have been possible without Irene Cohen and Shelly Weiner, who, along with Frank and Nancy Brenner, sponsored Eva’s education at the American Hebrew Academy. Cohen and Weiner are Greensboro residents who are both extremely active in both Jewish education and Jewish philanthropy, and sponsoring Eva at the Academy was for them a high point in their commitment to support the needs of Jewish youth from around the globe. Irene Cohen shared her thoughts: “There is no greater sense of pride than to see a young person come into her own, go out in the world, and succeed. The students who come here are so lucky to receive this education, and Eva is a perfect example of a true life rags to riches story.” Shelly Weiner expressed her admiration for Eva and what she was able to achieve. She speaks of Eva with great pride, if she was one of her daughters: “Eva has always been goal oriented, even when she came here at fourteen. She had gone out and taught herself English because she wanted to come to the United States and the Academy so badly.” Weiner, who was herself born in the Ukraine, is committed to Jewish education because of the confidence it imbues: “The more knowledge you have, the more secure you are in who you are, in yourself, your family, and how you want to live your life. The Academy is unusual in that it encompasses all parts of Judaism in its approach. It is not just another Jewish school, it is truly exceptional. And to have such a school in Greensboro is so unusual and really amazing.” Irene continued: “The Academy is a dream, really, the manifestation of a dream. It was Chico’s dream, and it’s amazing that a man who lived a modest life, even though he could have lived in luxury, dedicated himself to founding this school, because what was important to him was to establish the Academy for young people to get this kind of education.” Cohen and Weiner were connected to Eva through the Greensboro Jewish Federation, which forged a relationship with the town of Beltsy, Moldova in 2000. The Federation, in cooperation with the American Joint Distribution Committee, runs an annual week long summer camp for Jewish youth, built and dedicated a Jewish Community Center complete with library and computer lab, and coordinates medical assistance for Jewish citizens of Beltsy. The goal of the partnership, according to Deborah Kintzing, who runs the program on behalf of the Greensboro Jewish Federation, is to rebuild Jewish life through moral, material, professional, and educational support to this region. Kintzing met Eva as a young girl through the summer camp program, and like Cohen and Weiner, speaks warmly of Eva and her journey: “For a child to take this step, to come to the United States alone at 13 years old, speaks to her inner strength.” But Kintzing also spoke of the strength of Eva’s parents, when they made the choice www.americanhebrewacademy.org 7 The story of Eva Moshkovich... to send Eva to the American Hebrew Academy: “When a parent chooses to let a child take advantage of an opportunity like moving to the United States and going to the American Hebrew Academy, they are letting go of their child. That child will not go back to a life in Beltsy, Moldova after they see the opportunities available in the United States. It is a difficult choice for a parent to make, to hand over your child to strangers, and hope that your child will do better than you were able to do.” Eva knows that she was fortunate to be sponsored by Cohen and Weiner, and to have the opportunity she was granted: “I think I was very lucky to get to go to AHA. And luck did play a big role there. I heard about AHA from a group of people from the Greensboro Jewish community, who traveled to Moldova and organized a summer camp. I went to the camp several times, and heard about AHA. Decided I wanted to go… They knew my English was not nearly good enough, so it was a leap of faith that AHA administration had to take when deciding whether to let me in or not. I am very thankful that they believed in me and decided to give me a chance. And this changed my life.” Eva Moshkovich was born in Beltsy, Moldova, just after the dissolution of the Former Soviet Union. Eva’s parents were professionals who were both involved in the available Jewish activities, especially her mother, who worked part-time teaching Hebrew and Jewish history and traditions. Eva does not remember facing blatant anti-Semitism during her childhood, but remembers the lack of options, and says she always knew that she was going to leave Moldova for a brighter future. When she was 12 years old, her family got their first computer, and an internet connection followed the next year. For Eva, this opened doors to what would become her vocation. “When I was 13, we got internet, and I started spending some of my time learning the things I can do online. I was familiar with computers and internet before, because I would sometimes go to my father’s 8 Eva and her father, Ilia, at Mt. Holyoke graduation, 2014 American Hebrew Academy Continued... workplace in the evenings to do things on a computer, but it was very different to have one at home,” she explained. Shelly Weiner shared: “This is a young woman who has always had goals, a very innovative young woman, who, knowing little about our society here, worked hard to teach herself English on the computer, and read books to equip herself for American culture, and I think that is very clever.” In Moldova, Eva was not able to take advanced courses in school, and found herself bored in the classroom. There is no question that had she not been able to come to the American Hebrew Academy through the generosity of her sponsors, her path would have been very different. Shelley Weiner (l) and Irene Cohen (r) “At the American Hebrew Academy I learned how to learn. In Moldova, the education system was not stimulating enough for me to need to study for more than half an hour a day. At the Academy, the curriculum was hard, and especially since I barely spoke any English when I first came, I had to study a lot. The ability to study is a very important skill, which will always be useful. As a programmer, I will be using it for the rest of my life. AHA prepared me really well for college and beyond.” Irene Cohen spoke of her pride: “It is such a rewarding feeling to see her success. We are so proud of her. When I talk about Eva and her accomplishments, it’s as if I am talking about my own child, or grandchild. We are just truly so so proud of her and the way she has done things, it is truly just amazing.” Cohen and Weiner spoke of Eva’s transition to life in the United States, and at the American Hebrew Academy. They purchased everything Eva needed for her dorm room, always made sure she had pocket money, and taught her about American customs. They also encouraged her to try everything that was now available to her at school, from challenging academic courses, to fulfilling Jewish life electives, to the wide range of athletic and art activities offered to students at the American Hebrew Academy. www.americanhebrewacademy.org 9 The story of Eva Moshkovich... Continued... And so Eva was active in many things on campus: “At AHA, I was able to try a lot of things that I would not get to try in Moldova. Almost each trimester I would take some sport. During the 4 years I got to do yoga, rock climbing, and swimming. I was on the swimming team for about two years and even took a lifeguarding class and then worked as a lifeguard at the swimming pool at AHA! I played tennis. I also went ice skating several times as a school trip. I also got to participate in several plays, and even got an acting award my freshman year. In college, I also got to take different classes such as table tennis and diving. I also got very interested in tango, and plan to continue to go to tango events from time to time even now after graduation.” After graduating from the American Hebrew Academy, Eva attended Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, a top tier college. And it was her experience in computer programming in high school that allowed her to not only decide on her major in Computer Science, but opened the doors to jobs and internships. Eva worked as a Web Design assistant at Mount Holyoke her sophomore year, and then spent a semester abroad in Budapest, Hungary, at the prestigious Aquincum Institute of Technology which led to a summer internship in Budapest afterwards at LogMeIn. After graduating from Mount Holyoke in 2014 with a degree in Computer Science and a Math minor, she deferred graduate school in favor of a position in Hartford, CT at Conning, a leading investment management company for the global insurance industry, which specializes in the field of programming economic scenario generators. Eva has achieved great success, earned through hard work and dedication. But she is also grateful for all the help she received along the way: “There were people who helped me during my high school years. Irene Cohen and Shelly Weiner were my host families and they made it possible for me to go to the American Hebrew Academy, which changed my life. The impact these amazing people had on me changed my life.” Shelly Weiner, herself a Holocaust survivor, has always believed in the impact that individuals can have on the lives of others. Her own life was saved when she was a child, and has always wanted to help others as a result. She told a story about taking Eva to see a play: “Eva turned around and asked me, ‘Why are you doing this for me? Nobody in Moldova does this for other people.’ And I told her, we do o it because we want to see you succeed, and this makes us happy of course, but we hope that one day you will have the opportunity to do this for someone else.” Cohen added: “Sponsoring Eva was one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life. There is no greater gift than helping a gifted young woman receive an amazing education at the American Hebrew Academy, and seeing where hard work and the opportunity to succeed has taken her.” 10 American Hebrew Academy Thank you to all of our generous Corporate Sponsors, Family Sponsors, and participants, who joined us for our annual fun-filled Family Weekend kickoff event Strikes for Scholarships, held in February. The success of this initiative is the fulfillment of the Academy’s goal of educating the next generation of Jewish leaders – in business, education, science and technology, and also in philanthropy. Since its establishment, the Four Corners Tzedakah Fund has raised an average of $6,000 per year. At the end of the school year, the students donate the money they have raised to various charities voted upon by the student body. In the past, organizations such as Invisible Children, a children’s hospital in Moldova, and the Make a Wish Foundation have been recipients. Four Corners also sets aside a portion of its money as tzedakah for the Academy’s scholarship fund in recognition of the school’s support of the organization. “At the Academy, we strive to educate the next generation of Jewish leaders,” said Hillary Zaken, American Hebrew Academy’s Director of Communications. “Our students are well aware of the impact they can have by giving back to the community. They are all involved with Tikkun ‘Olam community service projects, and know that philanthropy can exist on a large or small scale. Four Corners exemplifies the philanthropic leadership our students have initiated on their own.” Four Corners (l to r): Advisors Scott Culclasure and Mackenzie McIlmail. On February 15, 2015, during family Weekend, the Four Corners Tzedakah Fund hosted their Eighth Annual Silent Auction to raise funds for charitable causes. The students involved collected items from the Academy community as well as from Greensboro merchants to auction, including art, travel tickets, gift cards, and Judaica which raised over $5,000. Four Corners is led by a group of seven students chosen each Four Corners’ Silent Auction year by the student body. This year’s team included Abby Shay, Sophie Goldstein, Madi Morris, Abril Fleitas, Rachel Sharkey, Allie Naude, Charlie Freedman and Elana Fauth. Faculty Advisors Dr Scott Culclasure, Mackenzie McIlmail, and Dr. Karen Dresser guide and supervise the students’ fundraising efforts. Faculty Advisor Culclasure offered thanks to the Academy community and the Four Corners board, for their contributions: “By supporting our Eighth Annual Silent Auction, you have not only contributed in tangible ways; you have also demonstrated the value of giving simply as a response to having been given.” It was the inspiration given by Academy founder Chico Sabbah z”l and his family that inspired the establishment of the Four Corners Tzedakah Fund. Sabbah, who had dedicated himself to philanthropic ideals, founded the American Hebrew Academy in 1996. Sabbah dreamed of developing a first of its kind Jewish community in which Jewish teenagers from around the world and from all Jewish backgrounds could come together to enrich their knowledge of Jewish culture, history, and religious practices, both traditional and modern while preparing for admission to college and university and future positions of leadership in the Jewish community. The students at the Academy have inherited that dream. In addition to fundraising, Four Corners works to educate students about pressing needs around the world as a way of encouraging thoughtfulness to the allocation process. The Fund’s stated goal is to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of philanthropy as an acknowledgement that the Academy itself was founded through the vision, commitment, and generosity of the Sabbah family. Four Corners Tzedakah Fund, now in its 10th year, has become an American Hebrew Academy institution inspiring students to build an education not only in academics and Jewish studies, but in philanthropy as well. www.americanhebrewacademy.org 13 דרך לעתיד Derekh L’Atid Pathway To The Future Be a part of American Hebrew Academy history Derekh L’Atid, Pathway to the Future, the American Hebrew Academy Brick Campaign has been hugely successful. The walkway into the campus’s beautiful and picturesque Gardens of Israel grows with attractively engraved bricks commemorating, celebrating, memorializing, and honoring friends and family worldwide. What a beautiful way to honor members from the Class of 2015, acknowledge a very special birthday or anniversary, pay tribute to a friend or a loved-one, or remember someone who left an indelible mark on your life. Bricks that are ordered by April 15 should arrive at the Academy in time for graduation, but orders may be placed at any time. Below is a picture of some of the bricks currently on the pathway. Detailed information as to how you may place your order for a brick is outlined on the next page.
