Here’s a deal that will cool you off – Sloan’s Ice Cream parlors are celebrating July as National Ice Cream Month by holding an oldfashioned Ice Cream Social. To get a ticket for a free ice cream treat at the CityPlace location on Sunday, July 26, you have to take a selfie showing yourself in Sloan’s, or eating one of Sloan’s ice cream treats, and post it to their Facebook page. “We wanted to give back to our fans,” said David Wild, Sloan’s director of franchising. “Everybody remembers the ice cream socials in school, and getting free ice cream with your friends – it’s what we wanted to recreate, the nostalgia.” Nostalgia is built into Sloan’s, first started in 1999 by Sloan Kamenstein, who envisioned an old fashioned ice cream parlor crossed with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. “He wanted to create something like a wonderland so that when you’re a kid – or an adult going into it – it makes you feel like a kid again and gives you that sense of wonder,” Wild said. All of the shop designs and brand colors were chosen by the owners to create a bubblegum and neon green space. Rainbow chandeliers drip color from the ceiling; the bathrooms are a trompe l’oeil: the glass doors are transparent until a light is turned on, then the glass becomes frosted – but only on the outside. Those inside are treated to views of curious onlookers peering in. The recipes for the ice creams were from Kamenstein’s early career as a pastry chef who did stages in European kitchens and bakeries. He studied at the Cordon Bleu, and made desserts at the Ritz and other hotels. “He came back here (to the U.S.), and decided what he wanted to do. His grandfather had taken him for ice cream every day after school. He wanted to open an ice cream parlor where everyone could go and have that experience.” His chef’s predilections came through, and he began creating ice creams with the highest quality ingredients – so not only was the shop inviting, but the ice creams were successful on their own. Now, Sloan’s is franchising, and along with the six in South Florida and one in California, four more are planned – two in California and two in the Middle East: Dubai and Kuwait. “They have very hot weather there,” Wild said. “And these are where the hot trends are – Dubai is the hub of everything trending.” The Ice Cream Social will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday, at Sloan’s in CityPlace, 700 Rosemary Ave., West Palm Beach. Call (561) 833-4303. Free ice cream given to ticketed guests. Get details on Sloan’s Facebook page
