Principal Linda Wiley retiring at the end of the school year
Topeka High will soon bid a fond farewell to its 24th
principal, Dr. Linda Wiley, ending her 35 year commitment to Topeka Public Schools. Earning a Bachelor of Science, Secondary Education/Biology from
Kansas State in 1972 and a Master of Education,
Reading Specialist from Washburn University in
1981 she began her career teaching Biology and
then acting as consulting teacher for instructional
computing at Topeka West High School. She then
became a technology specialist for information technology, Director of the Professional Development
Center for Educational Technology and Curriculum
Coordinator at Highland Park High School. In 1997,
she became an Assistant Principal at Topeka High. She was
the Associate Principal at Highland Park from 2000-2002. Dr.
Wiley returned to Topeka High
in 2002 as the Associate Principal and was named THS Principal in 2006. Even though Dr.
Wiley is a Seaman High School
graduate (1969), she’s a Trojan
through and through. We wish
her well in her next adventures. Dr. Wiley with her
assistant, Debi Scrimsher

made more critical discoveries that
shed new light on the workings of
the immune system. He has published over 250 original scientific

Members of the Topeka High School Historical
Society can take pride in knowing their support makes a big
difference in how well-preserved our jewel of a building
and our history remains.
The most recent project is shown here – restoration
of chandeliers in the English Room 306. The THS Class of
1965 and Linda Haughawout Lee (1966) sponsored the project. Degginger Foundry was responsible for the refurbishing.
The Topekans whose dream became this beautiful,
living monument to education would be proud of the way
we work together to maintain the elements so carefully chosen. They also would appreciate the way we have been able
to incorporate new technology in the historic design – they
used the best materials and technology available in 1930
when construction started.
We celebrate our legacy every day as students
move through the halls, into the cafeteria and library and
other rooms where can be seen more of the THSHS’s successes in helping donors realize their dreams to maintain
our historic beauty.
The next big project is a rebuilding of the tower
stairs so we can once again enjoy the view from the tower
windows. How wonderful it would thbe to be able to give
tower tours as we celebrate the 150 anniversary of Topeka
High School in 2021. That’s just five years away, so mark
your calendars. Planning has begun for the sesquicentenni-
al, and we welcome volunteers to help put that fete together. You don’t have to be on the board of directors to be involved with THSHS projects.
To make sure you don’t miss any news about that
party, be sure to renew your membership – we have fiveand 10-year options that make it easy to stay on the mailing
list.
And thank you for your continued support for Topeka High School.

TOWER SOCIETY FUND was established in 2009 to separate
membership dues (used for office operating expenses) from donations (intended for building projects). Tower
Society contributions are aggregated to move donors through the levels. Donors are posted as levels are
reached. A percentage of all contributions helps with THSHS operating expenses and maintaining our office.
Please consider the THSHS as the recipient of your yearly contribution or donation matching with your
business. The THSHS is a 501C3 organization - contributions are tax-exempt. For more information
about the Tower Society Fund, contact us at thshs2001@yahoo.com , download a form or pay online at

2015 Year End Financial Report
The board of the Topeka High School Historical Society at their January meeting approved year
end 2015 financial statements showing a positive balance with receipts over revenues by $11,157 for the
operations side of the organization. Members of the
THSHS responded generously to the appeal to contribute to the operations fund and a positive year-end
balance. The mailing resulted in contributions of
$22,950 from 173 donors, who are listed below. The
THSHS ended the year with 2,007 members, a decrease of 57 members from year-end 2014.
The Tower Society Fund which accumulates
resources for historical preservation projects funded
the Paul Fink Memorial Room and Office, preservation and replication of the THS Crest that hung above
the main doors to the school since 1931 and repaired
the THS Chimes motor. Additions to the Tower Society Fund at year end were $6,967.
We were able to accomplish our 2015 goal to
clearly identify operations and preservation funds
within our organization. We know how important
membership support is for our operations which covers our executive secretary’s salary and expenses
incurred for our activities such as the Hall of Fame
Recognition, hosting the Alumni & Friends luncheons
and making historic records available to the many
alumni and supporters interested in the school.
