TVS Character Education Who are YOU Constructing? Dancing, singing, snacks and pizza. What could make a better conference? The addition of some wonderful discussion topics, speakers and presenters. On October 12, 2007, 8th graders from Bennington and Tescott met together at the TVS Friends: “Who are YOU Constructing” conference. Marilyn Pruitt from the Ottawa County Health Department “cooked” up a disgusting mix of substances and advised students of the ingredients found in Smokeless Tobacco. The attention of many students was gained and those observing knew who had asked the most questions as they emerged from the breakout session with false “ugly” teeth to demonstrate the effects of smokeless tobacco. Daniel Craig from the Saline County Tobacco Prevention Office reemphasized the need to be “Through With Chew” in our schools. His presentation included information from Wyoming and how that state has reduced the use of Smokeless Tobacco. Jo Walker, teacher at Tescott Elementary School, and her trained therapy dog, Jury, fascinated the group with information about how dogs can help with calming students, people who suffer from seizures and other physical ailments. Jury, a black Labrador, was overwhelmed with hugs from the students and adults. Members of TRUCE (Teens Resisting Unhealthy Choices Everyday), the BHS SADD Chapter, assisted with the event. To involve students in learning teamwork, many activities were conducted. Groups were able to lower themselves to the floor and back up with only a rope connecting them. They unwound their human knot and they “slapped” their way around a circle. TRUCE Members led small group discussions about bullying prevention, self-esteem, empathy and building bridges between strangers who go to school in the same school district. Setting up the rooms, clean up, and distributing lunch were also responsibilities of TRUCE members. Keynote Lunch Speaker was Alyssa George who presented “Bullying: The Bystander Effect” and spoke about her current responsibilities as Miss Kansas 2007. Many questions were asked about how to stop bullying in our schools as well as awe at her crown and upcoming vie for Miss America. Lynda Schneider, a trained FISH! Trainer, involved the students in activities and information about how the Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, Washington uses four principles for success. Students were urged to use the same four principles for success at school: PLAY (have fun), MAKE THEIR DAY (challenge others to involve themselves), BE THERE (listen), and CHOOSE (we choose our daily attitude). Huge thanks to the Bennington Bible Church for allowing us to use their facility for the day, to the Tescott and Bennington Cooks for making delicious snacks and to the Bank of Tescott and Bennington State Bank for supplying water and writing utensils for the day! For more information, talk to your 8th grader or Rosemary Neaderhiser, Conference Director. Let’s BRAG:Bennington Responsibility Action Group BRAG students were out in force at the recent Bennington High School Homecoming reminding everyone about the dangers of “Smokeless” tobacco. Students sold sunflower seeds and Bulldog Spirit beads asking that people “Spit Seeds and Wear Beads.” In addition BRAG had informational brochures and distributed cards with information about the harms of smokeless tobacco.
