PRODUCTION AND OUTREACH
Corinne Ray featured retiring Beverly High School Band
Director Ray Novack as a special guest on her “Faces and
Places” show, reminiscing about his 35 year career at BHS.
Ray even played a musical number on his original
instrument of choice, the accordion.

On May 23, Fred Hammond interviewed Martha
Gavin about the Ghost Army, a fascinating WWII
allied project kept secret for some 50 years. Gavin’s
uncle was part of the team which used all manner of
deceptive tactics, including fake rubber tanks, to
deceive the German Army.

BevCam taped the joint School Committee/City Council
meeting on May 1; and also aired a live broadcast of the
School Committee public budget hearing May 8. Both
events were held in the BHS auditorium.

“Chit Chat with Sky and Kat” taped their last episode. Sky
Cowans and Katerina Hellios, both seniors, will be
graduating in June. They taped some fifteen shows during
the school year, and gained many loyal viewers. This
success is a tribute to Mrs. Lloyd’s media program, of
which BevCam is proud to be a part.

BevCam was on hand May 24 to tape the annual
Spring Concert in the BHS auditorium. Denny Dart
produced the program with able help from volunteers

On May 19, BevCam joined dozens of other bike riders
for the first Beverly Bike Ride with the Mayor. The ride
started at City Hall, wound its way to Hospital Point
and back. Young and old participated in this event to
draw attention to Beverly as a bike-friendly community.

Brian Thompson produced a special program shot
on location at Ryles Club in Cambridge, MA. It
was a tribute evening dedicated to Maynard
Ferguson,in whose band Brian once played. The
event took place on May 4.
The brass heavy tribute band played at the Maynard Furguson memorial event
BevCam was invited to tape a special event at the Girdler
House. Tuna fishing Boat Captain David Marciano, a regular
on the NatGeo Channel series “Wicked Tuna”, gave a
presentation to the ladies, among whom was his great aunt.
We had a chance to interview David about his new found
career as a TV star.

On May 19, BevCam covered the US Coast Guard’s
annual Safe Boating Day at the USCG station in
Gloucester. There were many exhibits and hands on
events, including flare use, and a cold water survival
suit demonstration.

At the request of the Beverly Chamber of Commerce,
BevCam covered a networking event they held at the
North Shore Music Theater on May 17. Local restaurants
provided finger food for the exhibitors and guests. The
BHS Jazz Band entertained the crowd on the main inthe-round stage.

At the request of the Briscoe School and PTO,
BevCam taped 2 showings (May 3 and 4) of the
annual school play, “Anything Goes”. Denny Dart,
assisted by Kim and Walt, taped the leads and
understudies from a great vantage point in the
balcony.

Charlie Perlo and Maureen Smith, with the Solid Waste
Management Committee taped another “Carry-In, CarryOut” PSA reminding all of the trash disposal protocols at
Lynch Park.

BevCam continues to train students outside the
media curriculum to enable them to enjoy a
richer academic experience in other classes by
being able to tape class projects. These include
drama, poetry, etc.

Ray Novack conducts a guest orchestra composed of present and former band members at his retirement party
BevCam taped a “surprise” party for retiring BHS Band Director Ray Novack on Saturday night May
19. The field house was filled to overflowing with former band members, students, faculty and wellwishers. Ray took the baton to lead an all-star orchestra in selected numbers from the past 35 years.
New member Peter Stewart will soon be taping the first show in a new series, called “I Have the Music
in Me”, featuring music and dance performances by students at Glen Urquhart School.
New member Yvonne McFarland is considering incorporating video/TGV production into her classes at
St. John the Evangelist School, where she is a teacher.
BevCam is working with Mike Bookman of the Beverly Emergency Management Authority to air
FEMA-produced PSA spots on Channel 10 and 22.
Lia Kastrinakis, a 2010 BHS graduate who now attends Tufts studying media production, will spend
time at BevCam this summer as an intern.
We have been working with Emily Rockwell at BHS to produce anti-bullying and anti-substance abuse
PSA’s to air on Channel 22.
