Holly was born in the Bronx, NY in 1955. She was raised in the Bronx and
educated in the Bronx as well. Holly graduated Lehman College, a City University with a BA in Industrial and Government Accounting and a NYS & NJ
Reciprocal Teaching Certification in Kgn-8th Grades. Holly pursued a career
in accounting upon graduation in 1976 and has been in the field ever
since. During 1995-1996, Holly taught Accounting for Small Businesses in
the Fair Lawn Community School. Holly presently works as a Controller at
VEC Electronics in Palisades Park, New Jersey.
Holly and Floyd met in 1971 and were married in 1974.
Holly and Floyd lived in the Bronx until 1977 when they
moved to New Jersey. While living in Fort Lee, Holly became active in the Palisades Chapter of Women’s American ORT and became President of her chapter in 1981.
When she moved to Fair Lawn, she became a NJ Region
representative and helped to charter a new evening
chapter of the organization, where the young members
raised funds to support the ORT Vocational schools
throughout the world. Holly has stated that her volunteering and leadership abilities were learned throughout
her life watching her mother raise her brother Barry and
herself, while creating a life surrounded with family and
friends, and teaching them the importance of their Jewish heritage and instilling in them the ability to become independent, self
sufficient, productive members of society. Holly’s mother Rita participated
in social activism in the early 60’s when she and her brother were young
students. She also became active in Women’s American ORT in the late 60’s
and showed her children that there is always room in your life to respect
your family ties and work towards self betterment while making time to
help those less fortunate than yourself and in need, outside of your own immediate surroundings. Tikkun Olam, a lesson learned at a very young age.
Howard and Adam were born to Holly and
Floyd in 1981 and 1986. When Holly and
Floyd moved to Fair Lawn in 1987, Howard
entered Milnes School, Adam began a Mommy
and Me Program in the Community School
Program and then attended Nursery School at
the Fair Lawn Jewish Center. Howard began
Religious School in the Primary Grades and
the rest is history.
Both boys continued their formal
religious education here at the Fair
Lawn Jewish Center, became Bar
Mitzvah here and volunteered in
the Religious School as classroom
aides and tutors, both through
their high school years. Howard
also taught Tae Kwon Do classes
here at our Center to many of our
current congregational youth and
Adam was an aide to Mrs. Weingast
on Sundays for many years. The
“boys” connections to the Fair
Lawn Jewish Center are deeply rooted in our building
and among the friends they made for life, here in Fair Lawn and our Religious School. One of Holly’s proudest moments at our Center was when
she became a Bat Mitzvah in 2006, on the bimah that her sons also ascended, while studying with their help. Her sons shared the knowledge
they gained here at the Jewish Center, which made Holly’s studies
sweeter and more meaningful for her.
Holly became an active volunteer at the Center early in the Levy’s membership here. She joined the Religious School Committee and served as
chairperson of that committee for 8 years. Holly also co-chaired the Social Action Committee, where she worked on many of the drives for people
in need, cooked and served many meals for the homeless at the Kansas
Street Shelter in Hackensack and visited our patients in Valley Hospital, a
volunteer effort she continues today. Holly served on the Nursery School
Committee, the Cantor Search Committee, the Investment Committee, the
BRIC Committee, chaired the Telephone Outreach Committee and started
the Minyan Volunteer Telephone Outreach, as well as serving on our Congregational Merger Committee. Holly organized the torah procession and
merger event when our congregation and the B’nai Israel congregation
joined together.
She feels that the growth and marriage of our two
congregations has strengthened our Congregational
family in ways we could not have imagined, only
four years ago. She has been on the Board of
Directors since the early 1990’s. Holly served on our
Executive Committee as Secretary for four years, a
Vice President for four years, the Executive Vice
President for two years and of course as President
of the congregation for the past two years. During
her years as a volunteer, Holly believes motivating
members to volunteer and become part of the
future leadership of our Center was a very important part of what she has accomplished. Holly believes “recruiting” Floyd to work on our Kiddush Committee, three
years ago, was a wonderful accomplishment for our Center. Floyd is one of our very
busy “Shabbat Kiddush Guys” and enjoys serving the Congregation in this way.
Holly & Floyd are also regular Sunday evening “Minyanaires” and have missed few
Sunday evening services in 15 years. Holly worked with the Personnel Committee
on the signing of new contracts with our Rabbi, Cantor, Executive Director, and
Nursery School Director, all in the first year of her presidency. Holly asked our
congregants to become technologically and ecologically correct and accept e-mail
News and Views delivery, as well as other important communications. Our Sefer
Haftorah project was proposed to our Executive Committee and Board and is an
ongoing project. Holly was very proud to be engaged in the efforts of our Fund
Raising Committee and watch this project grow in spiritual and financial ways that
have been very beneficial to our Center. To date, over one third of our congregation
uses our email service and we have considerably cut some of our paper usage.
Holly has appointed new committees to study and consider the future direction of
our Center and our funds, and a Constitution and By-Laws Review Committee to
update our current documents.
Throughout her time volunteering in our Center and particularly in these last two
years as our President, Holly believes that the honor bestowed upon her being
asked to lead our congregation has been an essential part of her membership here
and her spiritual life at the Center. This honor, coupled with the joy she shares each
Shabbat, each Minyan service, and each meeting she attends, continues to grow.
Being part of our congregation and sharing our life cycle events, holidays, simchas
and prayers while watching the children of our congregation grow, has been a
remarkable opportunity. Sharing the bimah with our devoted clergy, so many lay
leaders and service participants and our congregational children (our congregational future), has brought a richness to her life that she will always have in her
heart. Working closely with our esteemed clergy, professional staff, our office staff
and our maintenance staff, has been an extra "perk" during her service.
Holly and her family are very proud to be members of the Fair Lawn Jewish CenterCongregation B’nai Israel and hopes that she has been able to share that pride as a
way of inspiring others to do the same with each and everyone of our congregants.
Message from our President
Shalom Chaverim:
The Fair Lawn Jewish Center-Congregation B’nai Israel has been the
spiritual home to myself and my family for over 24 years. The time since
we joined in 1987 surely has passed quickly. As a family we attended
services, joined committees and participated in social action, fund raising
and educational events. Howard and Adam attended the Nursery School,
the Pre-K Enrichment program and the Religious School. Floyd and I
shared so many life cycle events with our community and in particular
“shepped nachas” when our sons each ascended the bimah to become Bar
Mitvah. As my involvement in committee and board work became deeper,
I also studied and was able to ascend the same bimah and become a Bat
Mitzvah here in our spiritual home.
Why do I repeat my history here and remind you of some of the highlights
of my journey from new member through the presidency of this very
special congregation? I believe the love of Judaism and the values that
we all share, coupled with the wish to be part of something so important
to our past and future generations, is a message to be shared continuously. My story is not new, my time of giving back to our community and
our brothers and sisters around the world is not unique. Volunteering, in
any capacity as a lay leader in this Congregation is just one example of
how each and every one of us can make a difference in our world. While
studying together, giving tzedakah and performing acts of kindness, we
ALL become leaders of our congregation and proudly serve, by example.
Throughout the time that I worked on various committees, accepted
committee chair positions, served on our esteemed Board and Executive
Committees and of course as your President, was to always be part of the
growth of this wonderful community, give back in any way possible and
inspire others to do the same. Where would our congregation be without
each and every member, participating on so many levels of volunteer and
giving opportunities? Simply put, we would not be a congregation at all.
Without our volunteers and donors, without our leaders, without you, we
would be a building, not a community.
I would like to thank every one of you that purchased ads in our journal
and would remind everyone to read the ads and support the vendors that
generously supported us here. To Linda Ayes and the committee that
worked on this gala event, todah rabbah for all that you have done. To
Irving Sklaver, your continued participation and encouragement of others
for this event is immeasurable and to Jeff Zerowin and everyone that
worked on the Ad Journal, yasher koach again, on a job well done.
It has truly been my honor to serve our congregation and to be the
honoree at this event. With my heartfelt gratitude for the support of every
member of our congregation as we traveled the path of growing and
sharing, I remain

Message from our Rabbi
Chaverai, Dear Friends,
Very often I have heard Holly Levy describes herself as a “people person.” I
think of a Talmudic statement that expresses the importance of that quality:
Rabbi Hanina ben Dosa taught, “When a person’s fellow creatures are pleased
with him, God is pleased with him; when a person’s fellow creatures are not
pleased with him, God is not pleased with him,” (Perkei Avot 3:13)
Rabbi Hanina ben Dosa knew that how we relate to other people is a critical
measure of who we are, and a matter that is of great importance to God. Over the
years that I have had the pleasure to know and to work with Holly, she has shown
her wisdom and her discernment in dealing with so many of the members of our
congregation. Her understanding of people has aided my work in many ways. She
is very sensitive to those around her. I very much appreciate her insight. Of
course she has also had to deal wisely with many other issues that have faced the
synagogue. The economy has forced every non-profit organization,
including
our synagogue, during these past two years to face serious challenges. She has
been able to be certain that we have a plan that will enable us to renovate parts of
our building and maintain a strong financial future. These issues have not been
easy and I know all the time she has put into solving them, working with people of
many different opinions to fine tune the best path for us. She has shown the ability to listen and to reach an agreement that will move the congregation forward. I
wish her and all the members of her family the best in the future as her term as
President ends.
Rabbi Ronald S. Roth
Message from our Cantor
It is my pleasure to write words of mazel tov on this night when we
join as a community to honor Holly Levy. No doubt, during Holly’s
tenure as president, all have witnessed first-hand her ongoing dedication to our synagogue. Whether presiding over meetings, delivering
announcements or shaking hands with congregants, Holly has personified the dictum of the Mishna found in Pirke Avot which reads:
greet each person with a cheerful countenance. Time and time again,
Holly has gone out of her way to praise others and offer encouragement and insight while always sharing her personal warmth and
pleasant demeanor. Her kindnesses and perseverance are exemplary.
While perhaps obligated to extend herself to others in a professional
context, I believe that she has stood out because of her ability to extend herself in a personal manner as well. She is a genuine human being deeply committed to the synagogue, its members, its staff, its relationships and its overall success. We should all feel truly blessed to
have had her at the helm these last two years. Most importantly, I
know that she will continue to make herself available to our ongoing
efforts here at the FLJC. You are likely to see her at future meetings
as well as Shabbat services and community gatherings. She will continue to be a guiding presence in our collective endeavor. I want to
take this opportunity to personally thank her for all of her talent,
time, dedication and concern, all in the service of others.
Holly, may you and Floyd be blessed with health, contentment, fulfillment, and all of God’s blessings in the years to come. Yasher koach on
a job well done!!

Message from our Executive Director
Each year I have the opportunity to congratulate our honoree(s) on this very special recognition.
This year I have the pleasure of congratulating a very special lady, our outgoing President, Holly
Levy. From firsthand knowledge, Holly has poured her heart and soul into the job of leading our
congregation. Most of her evenings have been spent attending meetings at the Center or on the
phone, fielding calls and averting one crisis or another. Any free time that Holly may have had,
has been spent worrying and working on behalf of our Center.
Holly and I have had many telephone conversations over the past two years. We have met to
discuss various synagogue issues and through all our dealings, we have always been able to maintain the utmost respect for each other. We may have disagreed but at the end of the day, a viable
and acceptable solution was always accomplished.
The FLJC/CBI should consider itself very lucky to have had the devotion and dedication of such a
leader. Holly’s leadership, accounting skills, ability to reflect on a situation and see it through to
its conclusion, are all invaluable attributes and we were the recipients and beneficiaries of her
expertise.
I salute Holly on an extraordinary job and I thank Floyd, Howard, Adam and Rita Pechman,
Holly’s mom, on loaning us their mom and daughter. Your selflessness has only served to enhance
our synagogue and enrich all our lives. Thanks so much for these two incredible years of service
and I hope we can continue to talk and ponder the future of our Center.
Mazel tov, Holly, on this well deserved honor and may you now relax with the knowledge that you
have served your congregation well. Yasher koach on a great job!
Sincerely,
June B. Aranoff
Message from our AD Journal Chairman
It is my pleasure to congratulate this year’s Gala honoree, Holly Levy. Holly has proven to be a
most successful and energetic leader and it is wonderful that we can celebrate her achievements
this evening. Holly has worked long and tiring hours, making sure we have a synagogue we can be
proud of.
Everyone is aware of the tough economic conditions that we are all facing. But it is all of you who
have rallied on our behalf, ensuring the success of our major fundraising event. Our Ad Journal
success is always due to our members that bring in ads and attend this Gala reception. Therefore,
my congratulations are extended to each and every one of you for all your support and generosity.
We couldn’t do it without you!
A special thanks to this year’s dinner chairperson, Linda Ayes. This evening’s festivities are all
courtesy of her hard work and dedicated efforts. Yasher koach on a job well done!
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Eileen Schwimmer and especially Jeffrey
Zerowin for all their help coordinating the Ad Journal. This evening’s Journal is all due to their
organizational and computer skills.
Let me wish a hearty mazel tov to Holly and Floyd and to their sons, Howard and Adam. You
have truly risen to the occasion and given the FLJC/CBI your utmost love and attention and on
behalf of the entire congregation, I thank you very much.
May you continue to do all your acts of tzedakah on behalf of our Center and the Jewish
community.
With best wishes,
Irving Sklaver

Yasher Koach Holly!
It has been a wonderful two years at FLJC/CBI with you at the helm. You have fulfilled
the duties of the Office of President not only with great leadership and grace, but also
with exceptional understanding, personal passion and good ‘old fashioned’ common
sense.
Although your presidency coincided with a difficult economic period for our nation and
for the local community, your compassion and the personal example you set have been
truly inspirational.
When you spoke, there was no doubt that your remarks were heartfelt and sincere. When
I questioned something, I always knew you would answer with honesty and directness
(whether or not I liked the answer!). I appreciate that more than you know.
As a member of the Board of Directors I applaud your leadership. As a member of the
Israel Committee, I appreciate your staunch support of our efforts. It has been my
sincere pleasure to work with you and to pray with you. It has truly been an honor to get
to know you.
I salute you along with our entire congregation for a job well done and a rest well
deserved!
Yasher koach, kol hakovod — May you go from strength to strength!
