Zero the Hero
I am very excited to share a glimpse into kindergarten with you. January 20th was a big day for kindergarten. In kindergarten, students need to know how to count to 100 by the end of the year. We use a mulAtude of acAviAes and techniques to teach this skill throughout the year. One of my favorite acAviAes is Zero the Hero. To mark every 10th day we incorporate Zero the Hero in our classrooms. On the 10th day of every month culminaAng to the 100th day, Zero the Hero brings students a treat in the shape of a zero. Some classrooms get small doughnuts or cereal or even candy, while other classes with food allergies use other items like Pony beads to build a 100th day necklace. On Tuesday, we celebrated the 100th day and to make this day even more special we had a surprise visitor. Zero the Hero himself visited all full day kindergarten and PM kindergarten classes and brought treats to help celebrate this event. Students leI school on this day with a 100 day hat, red mask and many leI wearing a cape just like Zero the Hero. When you have Ame, please help you child count to 100. Many students can already count this high, however, some students are struggling with this skill. Understanding number order will help with other math skills. In kindergarten, students are learning the foundaAon to later math skills. Thank you Zero the Hero and all the parents and teachers involved in helping make this day a success.

Pennies for Patients
Beginning January 26th, Student Council will be collecting change for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Pennies for
Patients is a program designed to actively involve students, teach them the importance of helping others, and demonstrate the
impact they can have on children and adults suffering with blood cancers like leukemia. LLS leads the way in funding blood
cancer research and provides information, patient support, and advocacy for better treatments. Students will be provided with an individual collection box to collect spare change from Jan 26th-30th. Any child that brings
in $3 or more will automatically receive a voucher for a FREE TICKET to the PHOENIX SUNS and ARIZONA
DIAMONDBACKS (with the purchase of a discounted ticket.) Please put your child's name and teacher's name on the box.

GOOD CHARACTER AWARDS
Congratulations to the following students for their Good
Character Award:
Trishelle Christensen (Caring). Trishelle ran extra laps during
the “fun run” to earn a charm for a student in our class who
was unable to run himself.
Brylee Allen (Caring). Brylee is always so kind and helpful
towards students who struggle to find their place in the school
setting. She has shown patience toward her classmates and
always tries to help out when needed. Thanks Brylee! Keep up
the great work! (Mrs. Barela)
Many cases of seasonal flu has been reported
in Arizona. It's still not too late to receive the
flu shot. Remember...hand washing with soap
and water is still the best defense for staying
healthy.
